Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta recently welcomed Eagle Scout Matthew Peters to his office to congratulate him on attaining this rank and to present him with a proclamation recognizing his accomplishments. Matthew joined the scouts in 2009, held many leadership positions, and valid off premium tickets only. earned 43 merit badges and the World Conservation Award. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow, also known as the Boy Scout National Honor Society. For his Eagle Scout project, Matthew did his project at the Smithtown Historical Society. He cleared an area of the

sheep pasture and replaced the worn chicken wire fence with a new three-rail wooden fence that runs 200 feet long and added turkey wire to contain the sheep. Each post is 8 feet apart and its top angled to prevent water from collecting and causing the wood to rot. A recent graduate of Smithtown High School West, Matthew was a member of the National Honor Society, as well as the Math, German, and Technology Honor Societies. He took several advanced placement courses and participated in running Cross Country and Track. Matthew will

attend Iona College this fall, majoring in computer science. “Throughout your youth you have demonstrated a strong commitment to the community by being an altar server at St. Joseph’s Church, as well participating in a travel soccer team that promoted community service and your years involved with the scouts. You have set a high standard of civic responsibility that the youth of our great County of Suffolk may follow as you serve as inspiration to them,” said Legislator Rob Trotta.

The Argyle Theatre (Mark and Dylan Perlman, Managing Partners; Evan Pappas, Artistic Director), presents the hit Broadway musical Cabaret with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Joe Masteroff, based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood. Performances begin Friday, September 17th for a limited engagement through Sunday afternoon, October 24th at The Argyle Theatre (34 West Main Street, Babylon, Long Island). Cabaret is presented through special arrangement with Concord Theatricals. Directed by Evan Pappas, with choreography by Sara Brians and music direction by Jonathan Brenner, the cast will feature Dana Costello as Sally Bowles, Jon Peterson as The Emcee, and Andy Tighe as Cliff Bradshaw, with Fred Frabotta as Herr Schultz, Brian Owen as Ernst Ludwig, Suzanne Grodner as Fräulein Schneider, and Lilly Tobin as Fräulein Kost, as well as Alexis Semevolos and Conor Stepnowski. Mark and Dylan Perlman, Argyle Managing Partners, shared “We are thrilled to reopen The Argyle’s theatrical season and close out The Argyle’s second season with the multiple Tony award winning classic Cabaret.” They went on to say, “Come join us at the Kit Kat Club in Berlin in 1931 where patrons search for escape while the seeds of intolerance are fomenting. Be captivated in a time and place where nothing is certain except for one’s dreams.” In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920’s draws to a close, a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the Emcee’s bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady, and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff Bradsaw, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken by English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally’s boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. First presented in 1966, the ground-breaking musical Cabaret won an impressive 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, which then culminated into a smashing Oscar Winning film in 1972 winning 8 Oscars. This classic Kander and Ebb score is entertaining, thought- provoking and Broadway musical theatre at its best. “Cabaret still remains one of the greatest musicals,” exclaimed director Evan Pappas. “The craftsmanship and the storytelling by Kander, Ebb, and Masteroff is masterful!” He ended with, “We have just the cast and creative team to present it.” Cabaret will play the following performance schedule: Thursday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m., Saturday afternoons at 2:30 p.m. and Sunday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. with Special Added Performances on Wednesday evening, October 20 at 7:30 p.m. and Thursday October 21, at 2:00 pm. Helping Hand Rescue Mission(HHRM) is a local non-proﬁt organization that is based in Huntington, but serves people all over our island. Their mission is to improve the spiritual and temporal conditions of the children, families and people of the communities they serve by providing excellent service to all who come, whether they be rich or poor, high or low social status. They are here to love, to serve and to give. They are so excited to be hosting their ﬁrst Community Share Day on Saturday, September 18th with the Huntington Assembly of God! This will be a fun and engaging new way for their kindhearted, caring donors to connect with the families that they serve in their beautiful Huntington Station community. How does it work? You register online for a time slot. Then you neatly pack your car with the items you would like to share with the community, such as clothing, toys, household items, unexpired nonperishable food and any other items in good/new condition. Clothing must not be ripped, torn, or stained, missing buttons, or broken zippers. If you would like to give gift cards to families you may, but they ask that no cash is given. Also, no large electronics or furniture please. You can sign up for a two-hour time slot, where they will have the cars set up “trunk-or-treat” style in the parking lot. Community members will be able to walk around to the different cars and browse. You must stay by your

The Town Of Smithtown ‘Goes Gold’ For September With Tree Lighting Ceremony At Town Hall On Thursday, September 3rd, State, County & Local Officials joined together with the Daniela Conte Foundation, the Thomas Scully Foundation, and local families to kick off Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with the first annual ‘Go Gold’ Tree lighting ceremony at Town Hall. The tree featured gold ribbons with the names of local children who are actively fighting cancer, in remission or have passed on. The lights and ribbons were donated to the Town courtesy of Katia Conte, founder of the Daniela Conte foundation. Additionally, the Thomas Scully Foundation provided the town with giant gold awareness ribbons which can be viewed at the Smithtown Bull Monument and at the Parks Department through the month of September. “September is childhood cancer awareness month. However, many of the families here with us tonight will tell you that cancer does not take 11 months off. While we kick off a year of awareness tonight, we are more importantly here as one community to let every family, with a child diagnosed with cancer, know one very important fact. You are not alone.” Supervisor Ed Wehrheim Childhood cancer is the number one cause of death (by disease) in children. Despite alarming statistics, only 4% of research funds is allocated annually by the National Cancer Institute. The month of September is dedicated to fostering awareness and advocating for a cure for this vastly underfunded disease. Anthony and Katia Conte founded the Daniela Conte Foundation in 2020, in memory of their daughter. The foundation’s mission is to raise awareness, fund research to develop less toxic, more targeted treatments for childhood cancers, and to financially assist pediatric patients and their families going through treatment. The Daniela Conte Foundation has sponsored the tree lighting at Smithtown Town Hall and provided over 40 gold ribbons with the names of local children in remission, undergoing treatment or have passed due to childhood cancer. “As of today, our doctors and hospitals are still using 30-year-old toxic treatments on our children that cause a lifetime of medical problems for survivors. There have been changes over the last decade, but not enough… our children should be our priority…. Our goal is to invest in research, find a cure for pediatric cancers and to financially assist families with children with cancer. So, when you think about why it’s so important to Go Gold in September, think about the statistics and how underfunded childhood cancer really is. And be truly thankful if you haven’t had to endure the worst thing a parent can

He passed away when he was twelve years old… As part of our grieving, we knew we needed to do something to keep our son’s memory alive, and carry on the happiness he carried with him… We wanted to support families like ours who would travel the world in an effort to save their child. Our mission is to bring a little bit of happiness to children with cancer today, while supporting a cure for tomorrow.” Debbie Scully In addition to providing the Town of Smithtown with large gold awareness ribbons which are displayed at the Bull Monument and at the Parks Department, the Thomas Scully Foundation has worked

with the town over the past two years on public service announcements, and documentaries. Founded in 2017, to honor the life and memory of Thomas Scully, the mission of the Foundation is to bring “A Little Bit of Happiness” to children with cancer today, while supporting a cure for tomorrow. The Thomas Scully Foundation provides “A Little Bit of Happiness” care packages to children in local hospitals. Additionally, the Thomas Scully Foundation gives “A Little Bit of Hope’’ Grants to NY based families seeking innovative treatment for their child. Local mom and childhood cancer awareness advocate; Amy Beach has orchestrated a large ‘Lace Up for Kids’ partnership with the Smithtown Central School District in honor of her son and childhood cancer survivor Dylan. The ‘Lace Up for Kids’ campaign in Smithtown is made possible thanks to Amy Beach and her partnership with Smithtown School District, under the leadership of Smithtown Superintendent Dr Mark Secaur. Through the month of September, students, teachers, and faculty throughout the district will showcase their support through pictures and posts on social media. On September 18, 2021, The Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation will host two unique events on Long Island to create awareness for Veteran Suicide Prevention. Leading fellow Marines, Veterans and friends, Chad Lennon, a Major in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, will hike 22 miles carrying 22 pounds to represent the 22 Veterans who die by suicide each day. Lennon is asking Americans to join him in person or online virtually in memory of our service members who die every day from suicide. In addition to the walk, Long Island runners will join in unity by running a 5K at Veterans Memorial Park in Calverton, NY. Starting and finishing from the park entrance at 5789 Middle Country Road, the run will engage a new and unique audience to bring additional awareness to this important cause. Walk4Valor and Run4Life events are sponsored by the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation with support from Major Charles J. Sanders, NYARNG, Commander for Southold American Legion Post 803. Donohue Named Accompsett Middle School Assistant Principal Theresa Donohue’s childhood home sits in St. James, five miles from Accompsett Middle School. Her first role in education came in that school building as well, initially as an in-house substitute teacher, then as an academic intervention services tutor, when the facility served as a ninth grade center. Now, Donohue is thrilled to be returning home, to the community THERESA DONOHUE where she has been a lifelong resident. Donohue unanimously was approved Accompsett Middle School. She arrives from Cold by the Smithtown Board of Education to serve Spring Harbor, where she as assistant principal at spent the past four years

as humanities director, overseeing English and social studies. Donohue takes the role previously held by Timothy Hellmuth, who recently was appointed Accompsett Elementary School principal. “I always wanted to be able to come back to Smithtown,” Donohue said. “To be here now as an assistant principal, it’s a dream. Being this close to home, and in a community in which I was born and raised, really is very special to me.” Donohue particularly relishes working with middle schoolers. “It’s a very special time

in their lives. They’re going through so many changes,” said Donohue, who earned her bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue, and a master’s degree and a leadership certificate at Stony Brook University. “They want to be seen as independent and mature, but they’re not quite there yet. So I feel we have such a great opportunity here to mold them and shape them into young adults. They change so much in these three years. And it goes so fast. They just hold a special place in my heart.” After her initial experience in Smithtown,

Donohue began teaching English to seventh and eighth graders at Commack Middle School for a decade. She then ascended to an English coordinator position and served with the Commack School District for an additional four years. The tug of middle school prevailed, though, and Donohue accepted a position with the Massapequa School District as assistant principal at Berner Middle School, which had roughly 1,200 students. She eventually moved to the Cold Spring Harbor School District, serving for four years on

the curriculum side. “I learned so much about curriculum and social studies and early literacy,” Donohue said. “But I knew that being in one building — especially a middle-school building — was where I wanted to be. When this opportunity arose, I had to go for it.” “I’m excited to work with the people of Smithtown,” Donohue said. “I know there are wonderful administrators. I know the teachers are great. I feel connected to the community. I have a lot of pride. I’m glad to be a part of that.”
