The Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) is one of the world’s largest soccer leagues, and the largest league in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA), with 1,600 travel teams - equally divided between boys and girls - in Suffolk, Nassau and Queens. In 1965, Pat Ryder became President of the Long Island Soccer Football League (LISFL) and he made a concerted effort to have adult league teams assist in the development of youth soccer. Although some LISFL clubs responded, it was not until Jack Maher of the Deer Park Celtics wrote to Ryder to request the formal formation of the LIJSL that the ball really started rolling.

the league to new heights in their own individual way before the torch was passed to the current LIJSL President, Anthony Maresco, in January 2015. The LIJSL has been in the forefront of youth soccer for the past half-century. Children With Special Needs playing soccer in an organized league actually started in the LIJSL back in 1978 when the Huntington Boys Club (HBC) and Massapequa Soccer Club separately started programs. Craig Ludin, who has Down’s Syndrome and has been playing for HBC since he was a young boy in what is now known as our TOPSoccer Program, has received so many medals from the Special Olympics that he was inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. In 1980, Rocco Amoroso started the LIJSL Sportsmanship Program to improve discipline on
soccer fields. To this day, after every LIJSL regular season game, the match referee grades teams based on cooperation of players, coaches and fans, overall game conduct and player appearance. The team in each division with the most points at the end of the Spring and Fall Seasons receives the highly-regarded LIJSL Sportsmanship Award and their players proudly wear a LIJSL Sportsmanship patch on their shirt as a symbol of this achievement. The first high school all-star competition, the Exceptional Senior Games, was started by the LIJSL in 1981. The games continue every November on Long Island although the LIJSL has passed the torch to organizing the competition to the high school associations in Suffolk and Nassau

Ryder appointed Maher the first Commissioner of the LIJSL. Eight boys teams kicked off the new league in December 1966 and played throughout that winter to complete a 14-game schedule by March 1967. This was the same winter that the very first Super Bowl was played (won by the Green Bay Packers over the
Kansas City Chiefs, 35-10). Prior to the 1967-68 season, the non-profit LIJSL formalized its administration with Ron Campbell being named President. Volunteers became the lifeblood of the LIJSL and Campbell was succeeded as President by Bill Doyle, Sam Hobson, Tom Kenny, Tony Perez, Paul Bedell, Dick Frazita, Peter Collins and Addie Mattei-Iaia. Buddy here, checking in on behalf of my Human, who has just returned from one of those “vacation” outings I detest so much. You would think, after over 18 months of residence, I would have earned the right to tag along on a trip; but alas, Buddy the Betta was abandoned yet again, left to my own devices. Don’t get me wrong, the solitude is nice on occasion. No Human faces pressed up against the glass making fishy faces, no incessant tapping on the counter to get my attention, no bath times to contend with… but eventually, a fish does become lonely. Every morning, I would wake from my slumber expecting to be greeted with the usual love and adoration – and breakfast, of course. But nothing. Days passed, and all I found was a measly dissolving chalk-like thing with flakes embedded in it. At first, I thought it was a pillow; but eventually, I realized this was the best option on the menu for me for the time being. Speaking of bizarre sleeping
choices, it seems that every time my Human overhauls the tank to clean my gravel and my beloved plant, she never puts things quite back where she found them. Gone are my cozy nooks to snuggle in; replaced instead by mounds of pebbles. This has forced me to explore other options, among them, the top of the filter, where one strong current can send me sailing to a spot of rest just below the water line. Comfy indeed. Of course, when my Human forgets to replenish my water from time to time, I find myself hanging off the side, seemingly in a state of unrest. But not to worry, I can sleep just about anywhere, in any position. That includes laying on a leaf, wrapped around the filter tube, or just about vertical, face pressed against the gravel. Just turn my light off and “Do Not Disturb” – a fish needs his beauty rest, especially one as lovely as me. The last time I had nestled in for the night – or morning, as it were – I was rudely awakened by calls of “bath time for Buddy!”

Being the stubborn sort, I wrapped my fins firmly around the filter tube and refused to budge, gleefully watching as my Human tried to nudge me out of my corner with the back end of a spoon. Only when she began to lift the filter out with me on top of it did I realize that this was a losing battle. Little did I know that this particular bath was in preparation for the vacation I was not to be invited on. Talk about adding insult to injury. On a somewhat positive note, my Human did leave the light on for me, since I seem to flit around with more ease when my tank is illuminated. Better yet, when she returned, I was rewarded with “bonus” flakes for being such a good boy while she was gone – you know, not getting sucked into the filter or anything. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy signing off on behalf of his Human. Happy pumpkin picking to all!

Fantastic Firsts The classrooms have been prepared, the buses are on the road and the sound of laughter has returned to the hallways and playgrounds of the Lindenhurst Union Free School District. September 7th began another school year for the district and students smiled as they reunited with friends,
met new teachers and familiarized themselves with their surroundings. The first day of school was not only the start of a new academic year, but for many in the district, it was the start of a new chapter of their lives. Kindergarten students entered classrooms for the first time, leaving
behind the security of their parents. Sixth-graders entered the middle school and were introduced to the idea of changing classes and getting lockers. Starting Off the Year Smithtown Central School District opened its doors for the start of the 2016-2017 school year on September 6th. Administrators and staff welcomed students into their respective buildings, guiding the way into new
classrooms. Principals and teachers greeted the students at the start of the day and helped ease them into the new school year. Some students returned to their school for the new year and others made the transition to one
of the district’s middle or high schools for the first time. Students were excited to see familiar faces as they made their way into the buildings and settled into their classes for an exciting year ahead.

McDonald’s/Kaufman Enterprises A Family Franchise Expands Its Brand
down with their families to wait for it, rather than having to stand in line. The employees exuded a friendly, positive attitude and seemed genuinely happy with this new opportunity for growth presented by the company. Founded in 1960 by Leon Weil and Irv Klein, the first of their McDonald’s locations opened in East Northport. After Weil’s retirement, Klein expanded the business to include four additional restaurants by 1971. Six years later, Klein’s son-in-law, Jonah Kaufman, joined the team as the company’s first Director of Operations. The following year, Jonah became an owner/operator, resulting in the creation the Klein-Kaufman Corporation. The Klein-Kaufman Corporation grew immensely throughout the 1980’s and 90’s. It earned several outstanding restaurant awards, including the prestigious “Golden Arch” Award for outstanding restaurant operations and contributions to the McDonald’s corporation. In 1996, Klein retired, leaving full ownership of the restaurants to Kaufman, who formed Kaufman Enterprises.
In 2005, Jonah continued to expand the business by bringing on his son, Josh. At first, Josh’s main role was the Director of Operations. Together, Josh and Jonah grew their business, culminating in ownership of sixteen restaurants on Long Island, making the company one of the largest McDonald’s organizations in the United States. Today, Josh, 36, is the majority owner of eleven of the sixteen restaurants. Irv Klein is now 86 years old, living in West Palm Beach, Florida, and is thrilled to see where his family has taken the business he began more than half a century ago.

Kaufman Enterprises is a family-run, awardwinning McDonald’s franchise which owns and operates sixteen McDonald’s restaurants across Long Island. As part of a far-reaching effort to elevate customers’ experience, McDonald’s is testing a new kind of restaurant at one of these sixteen locations, 655 Fulton Street in Farmingdale, which had its grand opening on May 26th. This followed the premiere unveiling at their Medford restaurant. The new model features interactive kiosks, tableside service and a brand-new design aesthetic.
This innovative approach has been implemented in 30 prototype restaurants across the New York-Tri State region so far, as a result of customerled efforts to align the brand with evolving tastes and preferences. The in-store kiosks allow customers to tailor the menu to their own tastes with an assortment of ingredients, including a choice of bread, cheeses, sauces and toppings. These items are then made to order and are served tableside by McDonald’s staff. The more traditional menu items are still available as well, displayed on digital menu boards behind the counter. Mwaffak Kanjee, General Manager and Vice President of McDonald’s New York Metro Region, stated that this new program has garnered widespread positive feedback so far from both the customers and those employees being trained at these two Long Island locations. While visiting the Farmingdale restaurant, it was apparent that the customers enjoyed the added convenience of being able to customize their order using the new menu items and sit

Concert for a Cause
Legislator Leslie Kennedy marked the oncoming end of summer at the Nesconset Gazebo this evening, enjoying covers of popular bands such as the Beatles and Monkees with fellow Nesconset and Smithtown residents. Hosted by the W.S. Commerdinger Jr. Preservation Society, the Beatles Under the Stars concert provided locals a chance to relax and socialize with each other and featured the Mostly Moptops, a New York Times-featured band known for its 60’s, 70’s and 80’s music tributes. All the proceeds from the raffles went to funding the W.S. Commerdinger Jr. Preservation Society, and the preservation of Civil
War Captain McCormick’s house on their property. “The Commerdinger P r e s e r v a t i o n Society stewards the Commerdinger County Park. We are restoring the 1810 farmhouse in the Park to become a museum of local history. This history of the Parkland and farmhouse includes the Native American Lake Ronkonkoma meeting place, a Civil War Captain’s summer residence and Walter Commerdinger Jr.’s Estate. The Preservation Society thanks Legislature Kennedy for her support in obtaining Grants for our projects and the R.D.L. Gardiner Foundation for their support of the restoration project,” said Paul Albert, Chairman of the W.S. Commerdinger
Jr. Preservation Society board. This concert was an excellent opportunity for the residents of Nesconset and the surrounding area to enjoy the later days of summer while giving back to the noble cause of preserving the rich local history. “Summer is the time for beaches and road trips and camping trips,” the Legislator remarked, “but sometimes it’s just nice to sit back, unwind and enjoy the music. Thanks to The Commerdinger Preservation Society for putting together this wonderful concert and working hard to preserve local history.” The Legislator concluded by expressing the hopes that everyone enjoyed the evening.

September at the Hatchery You’d think with the arrival of those yellow school buses that the party would be over, however, it isn’t, not just yet. Summer lingers through September, and this lingering is more busy than idle, especially at the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium. Two fun-filled specials are instore for Hatchery visitors. One is the seasonal return of the ever popular Pollywog Adventures, a series of classes for youngsters 2 to 5 years of age, and the other is the Hatchery’s annual Fall Festival, an event for kids of all ages. Pollywog Adventures returns Wednesday, September 28th and meets each Wednesday
and Thursday morning for an hour starting at 10 a.m. through the fall and winter months. Tots and their caretakers can experience an hour of funfilled nature activities, with fish feeding and live animal presentations included along with story time and related crafts. It’s a friendly environment with refreshments for participants. The price is friendly too, as Pollywog Adventures is free with general admission. The Hatchery’s annual Fall Festival is a day set aside to celebrate the natural environment. On Saturday, September 24th, (rain date, October 1st), visitors can spend the day, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., having fun while learning about
fresh water ecology and pond animals, such as the trout raised at the Hatchery. The Hatchery’s two aquarium buildings are open to tour, and there’s fishing for trout by kids 12 years of age and under with all gear provided. In addition to the booths set up by participating environmental organizations, there will be games, crafts and plenty of food and refreshments for all kids of all ages. Many carbon monoxide detectors work for five to seven years. Check the back of alarms for a date stamp that indicates how old the product is and when it expires. Safety checklists are an important part of home maintenance. A proactive approach can prevent both injuries and damage to the home.

Water damage is a potentially costly problem that can afflict any home. Old homes tend to be most susceptible to water damage, and that damage can manifest itself in various ways. The following are some telltale signs of water damage that should give prospective home buyers pause and compel current homeowners to seek professional assistance as soon as possible: Stains Many prospective home buyers
