In preparation for the 2014-2015 school year, Elwood Middle School hosted their annual sixthgrade orientation on August 26th. Parents and students gathered in the auditorium, where they listened to an informative presentation and were introduced to faculty members. Preceding the orientation, parents and students were directed to the library where Google Chromebooks were distributed for sixth-

graders to take home. As part of a new technology initiative for the Elwood Union Free School District, students entering sixth-grade received their own Google Chromebook. During the presentation, a student-made video was shown, highlighting basic features and other applications accessible on the Chromebook. Students can access the video online and were encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new device, following the detailed instructions

Elwood Middle School Principal Dr. Hugh Gigante expressed his excitement about the integration of modern technology with student learning. “The sixth-grade students have a unique opportunity to use Chromebooks,” he said. “With this technology, they are exposed to an enhanced instructional experience which will better equip them for their continued educational journey.”

An Eagle Court of Honor celebrating the achievement of Sam Isaac, Boy Scout Troop 125 (Commack)’s 92nd Eagle Scout was held on June 1st at the Commack United Methodist Church. For his Eagle Scout Community Service and Leadership Project, which benefits West Hills County Park in Melville, Mr. Isaac led his team in the construction of three park benches and a fire pit at the F-Shelter campsite in West Hills County Park. He chose this project because the campsite was in need of places for campers to sit, cook and stay warm. This is also a site where Troop 125 has held their traditional Holiday in the

Woods Trip on numerous occasions. Eagle Scout Sam Isaac explained, “I wanted to give something back to the park, but at the same time I was able to give something back to the troop as well.” Beginning his scouting career in Cub Scout Pack 403 (Commack) as a Tiger Scout in first grade, Sam Isaac continued until he earned the Arrow of Light (the highest honor that can be earned as a Webelos Cub Scout) and ‘crossed over” to Boy Scouts. As a member of Boy Scout Troop 125 for seven years, his leadership positions included Patrol leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, and Patrol Quartermaster. He is also an Ordeal Member of the Order of the Arrow (the BSA National Honor Camping Society) and has additionally earned the World Conservation Award and the Jewish Boy Scout Religious Emblem, the Ner Tamid. As a student at Commack High School, he had numerous accomplishments both in and out of CHS.

Addressing the freshmen class, Dr. Ruck began the orientation by introduced himself and his professional background in the field of education. He also addressed basic regulations enforced in the high school and the importance of respect and responsibility, as well as the transition students can anticipate throughout their high school education.

Back To Reality By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Back to school. Back to schedules. Back to routines. Back from vacation. Back to reality. And so it begins. That slow, tedious transition into all things Autumn. That gradual acceptance of pumpkin spice and flowering mums and long sleeves and boots, and the reluctant closing of pools and packing away of bathing suits and flip flops. Say it ain’t so. Ah, but here it is. May as well embrace it. And while you’re sitting on a

park bench enjoying the cool crisp air (shameless plug alert), take a look at our new Autumn issue of Seasons Magazine for a refresher course on all that Long Island has to offer, no matter the time of year. From long walks on the beach and picnics in the park to weekends at the wineries and pumpkin patches; from family days at Oktoberfest celebrations and Fall Festivals to “me” time alone on the couch vegging out to the new fall TV season, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy.

Oh, and we can’t forget football. Sundays monopolized by the schedule of the home teams (or the Patriots, as the case may be), spent tailgating and snacking, rooting and yelling… Sunday Funday at its best. Having a schedule dictated by the hours of daylight has its downfalls; but it does make you want to savor those final glimpses of summer sunshine all the more. Take a walk, watch a sunset, sip a cup of tea on the patio. Maybe just grab a jacket on the way out.

In commencement of the 2014-2015 school year, Harborfields Central School District opened its doors the week prior to the first academic school day, welcoming parents and students into the district’s school buildings. Kicking off the week, members of the Harborfields faculty, administration and PTSA gathered to greet incoming high school students at the district’s annual ninth grade orientation on August 25th. Attendees were introduced to Harborfields High School Principal Dr. Rory Manning who addressed parents and students about new challenges and expectations freshmen students can anticipate during their next four years of high school. Freshmen were encouraged to attend the Harborfields High School Buddy Program that took place the next day. More than 100 upperclassmen volunteered their time to show their new peers around the building, offer advice and answer questions. “The Buddy Program gives our incoming ninth-grade students an opportunity to meet with older high school students,” Dr. Manning said. “The upperclassmen walk through their ninth grade buddy’s schedule and provide valuable information from a student perspective.” In addition to the high school orientation, students of Washington Drive Primary School, Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School and Oldfield Middle School were invited to visit and walk the halls of their school building prior to the first day of school.

The Commack School District continues its tradition of paying tribute to the 3,000 men and women who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001, and the more than 1,000 who have died due to health issues related to the attacks with its annual Night of Remembrance. The candlelight ceremony will take place at Commack High School’s Hero’s Memorial Track on September 11th at 6:30 p.m. Guest speakers include Congressman Israel, Senator Flanagan, and John Feal (FealGood Foundation). A Life Well-Lived The life well lived is one filled with experience. This experience cannot be wasted. In order to live a fully virtuous life, we must all give back to our community. Regardless of how fortunate or unfortunate we may be, a key trait of righteousness is a commitment to serve God’s creation. This idea, commonly known as stewardship, is the basis for a well lived life. I’m not a very religious person. I’ve gone to Catholic School my entire life, but I’ve also had Jewish and Episcopal inﬂuences throughout my childhood. Even if we don’t look at

stewardship from a religious perspective, most of us are hardwired to help out people in need. As a very fortunate person, I find it important to look out for those who are incapable of looking out for themselves. This does not mean acting like a superhero who swoops in to save the day. We can all make a difference on a much different scale. The main idea behind this article is not to convert people, but to serve as the kind of illustration that someone looking to live a full life must try to exemplify. It isn’t

always about ourselves. Sometimes, we have to put our wants and needs aside for the good of others. God wants us to help people. This call to serve my community, fellow humans and Mother Nature exemplify my idea of a life with a purpose. It is not always about our personal gains, but the good of our species. A life well lived should be studded with outreach and works of mercy. Putting one’s personal convictions aside is crucial to leading a life well lived through service.

The centerpiece is a monument topped with a section of steel from the Twin Towers. It is surrounded by walkways inlaid with engraved bricks donated by community and staff members, and others across the country and benches where individuals can rest and reﬂect. We welcome all in the greater community to attend the ceremony to honor those who have perished, the heroes of 9/11, and to pay tribute to their families. Artifacts and photos will be on display prior to the ceremony, and first responders will be sharing their memories with attendees.
