September is upon us, that glorious window between summer and autumn when Mother Nature gives us a taste of the fall chill to go along with the last of the warm rays of sunshine. It is a month of transition, as children head back to school, young adults pack up for college, and the rest of us try to adjust to the lessening light, the chillier temperatures and embrace all that the new season has to offer. Most of us reading this column have memories of Hurricane Sandy, and many people are still rebuilding from it all.

As we watch the terrible devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, we feel so much compassion for all who have been affected by this disaster - the pictures and stories have been unbelievable.

It reminds us all that we are all subject to events and circumstances in our lives that are unexpected, and out of our control. We should always be ready to help people in need.

As was true here with Sandy, it is amazing how people, organizations and companies have helped by volunteering their time, energy, resources and money. The outpouring of compassion has been, and continues to be, amazing. It reminds us all that, even during this

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program offers new ongoing support groups on a weekly and monthly basis. Weekly Groups General Support Group Mondays, 6-7:30 p.m. Women who are recently diagnosed with breast cancer will have the opportunity to meet with others in similar situations. Support Group for Caregivers of People with Breast Cancer Mondays, 6-7:30 p.m. Taking care of person with breast cancer can be stressful. This group is designed to address the needs of care takers. Any person who is experiencing the stress and anxiety of caring for a loved one with breast cancer should attend. Young Women’s Support Group, Under 40 Tuesdays, 6-7:30 p.m. Women under the age of 40 who are diagnosed with breast cancer have unique needs. This support group will focus on hose concerns while allowing the members to share their feelings in a safe supportive environment. Anyone who wants to connect with and receive support from women under 40 should attend. Support Group for Newly Diagnosed Stage 4 Breast Cancer Thursdays, 7-8 p.m. Meet with other women who are diagnosed with Stage 4/Metastatic Breast Cancer. Monthly Group Touchstone Group Last Monday of the Month 6-7:30 p.m. Women who received their last treatment more than 18 months ago will meet to check in with each other’s progress and discuss new developments in the world of breast cancer. This group is for women who are not in active treatment but want to stay in touch with other survivors.

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has awarded the 2017 FASNY Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship to Vincent Pastore of Huntington Station. Benjamin received a certificate and scholarship of $1,500 for his volunteer service in the community from FASNY member

Eugene Perry. “It is truly an honor to receive this scholarship from FASNY, an organization that many of my family members are members of,” said Pastore. Pastore will be attending the University at Albany this upcoming fall, and plans to study homeland security. His long-term goal is to work for the

federal government. Pastore became a member of the Huntington Manor Fire Department when he began high school. He also has various family members who are members of the fire department as well. He states, “I have been around the fire department my entire life. Commitment to community is a priority for me; it is part of who I am.” Pastore is one of 20 students chosen for this scholarship out of a surplus of applicants. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of an applicant’s volunteer service to his or her community, such as serving with a local fire department, scouting, church, school, work with senior citizens, fire prevention, and other projects. Additional criteria include consistent demonstration of good character and completion of a written essay.

Fire Island Lighthouse Light Keepers Behind the Scenes Tour Saturday, September 9th, at 9 a.m. Follow one of our present day Lighthouse Keepers on his rounds. Uniformed Officers, a twenty-six week residential police academy held in 2007. After graduation Tim was assigned to Region 1 and patrolled Suffolk County enforcing New York’s Environmental Conservation Law, including investigating hunting, fishing and trapping activity, releases of petroleum, asbestos and other hazardous substances, water pollution, wetland damage, timber theft, wild animals unlawfully kept as pets, and commercial and recreational marine fishing. ECO Fay keeps the mission of the Division of Law Enforcement (DLE) close to his heart, and thoroughly enjoys all the aspects of the mission, from tickets and arrest, to education, and especially outreaches. He is involved in the Youth Conservation Program, Youth Waterfowl Day and other youth oriented hunting and fishing outreaches. ECO Fay maintains one of the most diverse enforcement programs in the Division. He is adept at all aspects of the Environmental Conservation Law. New York State Department of E n v i r o n m e n t a l Conservation (DEC) E n v i r o n m e n t a l Conservation Officer (ECO) Timothy Fay received the 2016 “Officer of the Year” award from the ShikarSafari Club International in a ceremony hosted by long-time Club member Robert Stackler, DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos announced today. Shikar-Safari Club International was founded in 1952 by an international group of hunters interested in exchanging ideas about the sport. Each year the club sponsors an award for the Wildlife Conservation Police Officer of the Year in all 50 states, 10 Canadian provinces and the territories of both nations, acknowledging the important part ECOs play in local, national, and international wildlife conservation. ECO Fay grew up in the Town of Champlain in Clinton County and after graduating high school joined the US Army serving 21 years, retiring from the New York Army National Guard. He attended Buffalo State Collage graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree and Graduate work in Multidisciplinary Studies. He attended and graduated from the 17th Basic Academy for

This recognition also includes his work as a Field Training Officer, directing and guiding new officers in the field, locating, identifying, enforcing big game violations and bringing the charges to a successful resolution in court. Over 50 Fair In mid-September, the Over 50 Fair will once again offer Long Islanders an opportunity to meet with businesses and nonprofits who have terrific products and services geared towards adults age 50+ and their adult children. The Over 50 Fair, in its eighth year, is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island. This year’s event, on Sunday, September 17th from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Long Island Hilton/Huntington, its new easier location, will have over 80 exhibitors and over 30 speakers including television reality favorites. Kimberly Sherbach of Wantagh was one of the bachelorettes on the 19th edition of ABC’s hit romance reality series,

“The Bachelor,” in 2015. She will be discussing what it was like to be on the TV show and do a “Q & A.” In addition, Kimberly will be teaching a yoga class. Chef Maria Petridis was crowned a “Chopped Champion” on Food Network’s Chopped in December. Maria, of Maria’s Mediterranean Seafood & Grill in Bayside, will be doing a Greek cooking demo that is sure to be well-attended. Chef Sophie Bravo of Food Network’s Chopped Junior will be doing two demonstrations. Sophie, an adorable 11 year-old, will be doing a meringue class as well as a cake decorating with fondant class. Others include talks on reiki, astrology, hot

flashes, trusts, reinventing yourself, knitting, a country line dancing class, and a dance performance by the Seasoned Steppers, a group of women who are age 66+ and are former Ms. New York Senior America pageant contestants. The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates events at area malls under the business name Specialty Connections. “Because Americans are living longer, they should seek to live life to its fullest. There are so many opportunities here on Long Island. The purpose of the Over 50 Fair is to show people where to find them.”

Grants Awarded AHRC Suffolk, a notfor-profit organization supporting people with disabilities in Suffolk County, has been awarded $125,500 in grants from the Trustee Management Board of NYSARC Trust Services to support AHRC Suffolk’s guardianship and recreation programs. NYSARC Trust Services administers supplemental needs trusts (SNT) that can make dramatic improvements to the lives of people with disabilities while enabling individuals to maintain eligibility for public benefits programs, such as Medicaid and SSI. For 2017, NYSARC Trust Services is proud to fulfill its commitment to enhancing the lives of

people with disabilities by awarding a total of $2,793,500 in grants to NYSARC Chapters statewide. This year, AHRC Suffolk received $110,500 to provide guardianship services for people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities who would not otherwise have a legal guardian or advocate. Supported by Chapter staff and community volunteers, AHRC Suffolk’s Guardianship Program currently provides guardianship supports and services to 19 people and is ready to assist 25 more as a Standby or Alternate Standby guardian. NYSARC Trust Services

also awarded AHRC Suffolk $15,000 to develop new recreational opportunities to enrich the lives of the more than 2,500 members it serves. AHRC Suffolk plans to use the recreation grant funds for their Saturday Recreation Program. This grant enables the individuals to enjoy community outings like apple and pumpkin picking, zumba and yoga classes and to purchase supplies and equipment for indoor activities such as bowling, movies and arts and crafts projects. New Swim Program The YMCA of Long Island is excited to announce the launch of a new swim lessons program for members at all Y locations beginning in September. This is the first time in more than 20 years that the YMCA will update the methodology behind its program. Registration for the YMCA of Long Island’s new swim program began August 20th, and the program will officially launch on September 10th and run through November 18th. “The YMCA of the USA and the YMCA of Long Island are entirely dedicated to the safety of our community members, which is why we found it more important than ever to update our swim program to best prepare our members with the ability to be safe around the water and swim confidently,” said Anne Brigis, President and CEO of the YMCA of Long Island. “The new program will move away from the traditional swim training mechanisms such as floatation devices and instead focus on selfrescue skills and improved swim techniques.” The upgraded program includes three-categories: Swim Starters, Swim Basics and Swim Strokes,

through which swimmers will gain confidence and technical skill as they become highly proficient swimmers. In addition, once swimmers have completed the stages of swim, they can move onto Pathways, which are specialized tracks, including Competition, Leadership and Recreation. “This new program is designed for participants to feel safe and confident around water. It works on preventative activities such as asking permission to go into the water to working on the self-rescue benchmark skills JumpPush-Turn-Grab and SwimFloat-Swim,” said Tracie Busch, Aquatic Director at the Patchogue Family YMCA. “As they progress with the swim basics of the program they will learn and build to competitive swim strokes. This new approach gives a more fluid progression of skills that allows swimmers to feel a sense of achievement as they progress at their own pace. This results in more confident swimmers who stick with lessons and develop a love for swimming that can last a lifetime.” Swim Starters introduces infants and toddlers, ages six months to

three years, to the aquatic environment and focuses on developing swim readiness skills through fun and confidencebuilding experiences. Parents also learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies. Swim Basics develops personal water safety and basic swimming skills in students of all ages. Swimmers develop a high level of comfort in the water by practicing safe water habits, engaging in underwater exploration, and learning how to swim to safety and exit if they fall into a body of water. Swim Strokes introduces and refines stroke technique in older students (school age, teens and adults). Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being and foster a lifetime of physical activity. Softball Champions The Suffolk County Police Department’s 2nd Precinct Softball Team won its first championship in the Town of Huntington Fire Department league on Tuesday, August 22nd. The team, led by pitcher Chris Rathje, swept the Commack Fire Department team in a best of three series. Commack was the defending champions and was shell-shocked by the 2nd precinct squad which scored over 40 runs during the two-game sweep. Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay has played for the 2nd Precinct’s softball team for the last three years. “This team is comprised of

a great group of guys who work hard and constantly pick each other up, which is the definition of a true team,” said Legislator Lindsay. “Throughout the past 20 years of playing softball, I have never played alongside such a dedicated group. I am so honored to be part of this team and this championship.” Approaching the playoffs, the 2nd Precinct Softball Team finished in first place with a record of 21-7. Their dominance continued throughout the competitions, by never losing and never trailing in a game except for the 1st inning of the 2nd finals game.

Chris Rathje the 2nd Precinct’s veteran pitcher returned for the finals after suffering a leg injury in the final double header of the regular season. Rathje had great command of his pitches throughout the night, limiting walks to four intentional walks to Commack’s best hitter. He also had impressive at bats with seven hits in two games, driving in four runs and scoring five times., “I felt good on the mound and confident in our defense behind me,” said Chris Rathjie. “This was a real team effort with everyone contributing towards our victory.”

On Monday, August 28th, Congressman Lee Zeldin hosted a Hurricane Preparedness Seminar at Brookhaven Town Hall in Farmingville, to provide residents with information regarding hurricane preparedness and recovery. This year, forecasters predict an above-normal hurricane season in the Atlantic. Hurricanes and tropical storms have the potential to cause serious

damage to Long Island coastal and inland areas, including storm surge, heavy rainfall, coastal and inland flooding, high winds, and tornadoes. The grant money will be used to install two water stations and make improvements to the park which is located on Boyle Road in Selden. Since the launch of its nationwide “Bark for Your Park” program in 2011, PetSafe has been working to create more off-leash

The state of the art “handi-van” is equipped with a motorized wheelchair lift and can accommodate eight persons. The bus may be used by residents with disabilities for transportation anywhere within the Town of Smithtown, but highest priority is given to trips for medical purposes.

The service operates Monday through Friday with appointments starting at 9 a.m. and last pickup typically at 3 p.m. All appointments are scheduled subject to availability. Starting the School Year The Smithtown Central School District welcomed 28 new teachers to its staff during new teacher orientation from August 29th-31st. The newest faculty members began the first day by meeting members of central administration and departmental

The historic Smithtown Landing United Methodist Church will be holding a Fall service on Sunday September 17th, at 3 p.m. The church is only open to the public twice a year and is located on the corner of Landing Avenue and Oakside Road in Smithtown. First organized in 1795, the church was built in 1834 and dedicated

in October of that year. Originally, the church had only a center aisle - upon entering, men would seat themselves on the left and women on the right. The names of the founders can still be seen among the headstones in the cemetery that surrounds the church. The area was known as Smithtown Landing and the church was affectionately called

Motivation to be More Active Today’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible. can set positive examples by being physically active and even exercising with their children. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, take nightly walks or bike rides as a family. This is a great way to get kids off the couch, but also a great way to spend more time together as a family. Involve kids in your own pursuits. Parents who are weekend warrior athletes can involve their kids in their own activities. Take

kids along on weekend jogs, kayaking trips and so on, all the while explaining the important role physical activity plays in living a healthy lifestyle.

The Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo celebrated its first ever Founder’s Day – A Family Appreciation Day by offering guests $6 admission for adults and free admission for children on Saturday, August 26th. The park also gave out free backpacks and bracelets to the first 500 visitors. During the event, guests were treated to free face painting and a story hour with Long Island Game Farm owner Melinda Novak and her mother Diane Novak, who founded the park with her husband Stanley Novak in 1970. “Our Founder’s Day

Donation Drive Announced Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that Suffolk County has joined with the American Red Cross of Long Island to create an online donation platform for all residents to aid the victims of Hurricane Harvey. All donations will go directly to support emergency response efforts as well as for those still grappling with the devastation and flooding. “Long Islanders know all too well how Superstorm Sandy affected us all, and we will do whatever it takes to help our friends in Texas and Louisiana during this difficult time,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “I thank the American Red Cross of Long Island for their partnership and commitment to help those in need.” Neela Lockel, CEO of the American Red Cross of Long Island, said, “Our hearts go out to the

hundreds of thousands of people affected by what is being called the worst flooding disaster in U.S. history. The American Red Cross is working day and night to get help to where it is needed most. Thank you to our dedicated partners in Suffolk County for supporting these efforts.” The donation page is operated through the American Red Cross and accepts donations in all denominations. All funds donated will go to provide emergency assistance such as food, water, diapers, clothing and more. Hurricane Harvey has already set an all-time record for rainfall in the lower 48 states and additional rain is expected in the coming days. Since the storm hit late last week, 50 counties in the affected region have flooded, leaving more than 30,000 people displaced in emergency shelters. As of Monday, as many as 13

million people from Texas and Louisiana had been affected by flood watches and warnings. The American Red Cross is a nationally recognized non-profit charitable organization of volunteers and staff who work to deliver vital services. These include providing relief and support to those in crisis to helping you be prepared to respond in emergencies. The American Red Cross has been working around the clock along the Gulf Coast to help the thousands of people whose lives have been devastated by Hurricane Harvey. Getting the Most Out of College Only 60 percent of college freshmen will graduate within 6 years according to the latest report from the National Center for Educational Statistics. That’s pretty scary stuff for collegebound students and their tuition-paying parents especially if loans are part of the financial formula. Even for those students who make it to graduation, there may be some question as to whether they made the most of their time on campus. As this Northern Michigan University senior reflects, “There I was, about to graduate with some random degree and feeling like I’d wasted my

Balancing Extracurricular Activities Many high schools, colleges and universities emphasize their goals of producing well-rounded students. Extracurricular activities teach students important life lessons, provide them opportunities to socialize and often stimulate their minds and bodies in ways that differ from the stimulation provided in the classroom. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau states that, in 2014, 57 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 17 participate in at least one after-school

extracurricular activity. Children are more likely to participate in sports than clubs or lessons, such as music, dance and language, but each of these activities can be beneficial to students’ development. Students who participate in extracurricular activities may want to limit their participation to 20 hours per week. This is according to a group of professors from Stanford University and Villanova University who have been collecting data on the issue since 2007. In their report

“Extracurricular Activity in High-Performing School Contexts: Stress Buster, Booster or Buffer?”, Jerusha Conner and Sarah Miles found that 87 percent of kids who would be considered to have packed schedules were perfectly happy unless they were doing more than four hours a day. The “over-scheduling hypothesis” may be overhyped. This is the concern that too much organized activity participation leads to poor developmental

outcomes. This hypothesis also suggests that hectic schedules also undermine family functioning, detract from schoolwork and possibly increase the risk of copycat behaviors and excessive competitiveness. However, in the study “The Over-Scheduling Hypothesis Revisited: Intensity of Organized Activity Participation During Adolescence and Young Adult Outcomes,” researchers J.L. Mahoney and Andrea Vest determined that, controlling for demographic factors and

baseline adjustment, extracurricular intensity was a significant predictor of positive outcomes and unrelated to indicators of problematic adjustment (e.g., psychological distress, substance use, antisocial behavior) at young adulthood. Even though extracurricular activities are largely positive - even when schedules are packed - parents need to be aware of the diminishing returns of too many activities. This is something called the “threshold effect.” Benefits

from extracurriculars can level off when too many activities are being juggled. If a child is experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness or depression, or seems overly stressed, it could be time to reduce students’ time spent doing structured activities. It’s essential that families use the cues given by kids to assess what students can handle. And children should be encouraged to be honest with their parents about their extracurricular activities as well.
