Toulon Jr. is encouraging the public to come out to Celebrate NYS Sheriff’s Week by attending the Sheriff’s Open House and Family Day on Sunday, September 23rd at the Yaphank Jail located at 200 Glover Drive in Yaphank. Sheriff’s Week celebrates the significant contributions made by the Office of the Sheriff in county government and in the statewide criminal justice system. The event is geared toward people of all ages and will feature jail tours (ages 12 and over), exhibits, Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team demonstrations, a Troop Carrier Truck ride, K9 demonstrations, Operation Safe Child ID Cards, Senior ID Cards, a buggy obstacle course, aquatic robot, snacks, giveaways, games, music and much more. The event will be cohosted by the Suffolk County Correction Officers Association, the Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs PBA and the Suffolk County Association of Municipal Employees. Acknowledgements I have been putting this off for quite some time. This “final step,” if you will, penning my last column for South Bay. I told myself I would take my time with this one, write it well in advance of deadline, try to encapsulate everything in one epic, closing chapter. And yet, here I sit – 11:30 p.m. on the eve of my second to last day of work, staring at a mostly blank template as countless thoughts swirl in my brain. While my last three columns have been vignettes of one sort or another – from birthday beginnings and numeric significance, to desktop mementos and the memories associated with them, to a flashback of my origins within the pages of the old Lindy hometown weekly – this one, well, this one leaves me at a bit of a loss for words. My career, this portion of it, has been largely defined by my ability to transcribe a feeling on paper, to relate to readers from all walks of life by telling stories – of my life, of my surroundings and my observations of the people within them. Always, though, the idea was to find a common thread, a unifying theme. Change. It is the one constant. A perfect theme for this transitional transcript, don’t you think? Over the last several weeks, I have received countless letters from fans, family, friends – even a few detractors – most of whom were avid followers of my writing, all of whom wanted to take the opportunity to wish me well on the next phase of my journey. There were even a few phone calls from those

wishing to speak to me, to tell me how much of an impact I had made on their lives, how deeply a particular column had resonated.

The next time you’re among them, you may be able to save time, trouble and money when you choose a professional mover—you won’t have to worry about renting equipment, paying hidden costs, handling heavy or bulky items and being responsible if something goes wrong. Lenny Kravitz Spreads Love Through Music By Allison Kugel Twenty-nine years after releasing his debut album, Lenny Kravitz is still letting love rule. The multi-Grammy award winning musician brings forth a conscious body of work with his latest album, Raise Vibration, out September 7th. Musically, Raise Vibration is an eclectic blend of the kind of stylistic rock n’ roll-funk sound that Kravitz is known for, with subtle nods to vintage R&B and choruses that sway towards pop appeal. His music puts you in a trance-like groove and defies all genre. Allison Kugel: You’ve said you were born to make music. Can you share your earliest memory where you became aware that music was going to be your life? Lenny Kravitz: For me the pivotal moment was going to see The Jackson 5, live at Madison Square Garden, when I was six years old. I was in the first grade. I had already been intently listening to their record. But I went to the show, and the next morning that was it! I was completely sold. I knew that’s what I wanted to do.

my favorite place to work; it’s my workshop. When I’m in the studio and I’ve got my equipment and all my instruments and everything is set up, that’s the magical place for me. It’s where I can flow. I jump around from instrument to instrument, and it’s wonderful.

It means having the desire to learn, to improve, and to face my faults and learn from them. I’m always looking to go higher. And taking as much ego out of myself as possible.

Allison Kugel: Do you record all of your instrumentals in addition to doing your vocals and producing?

Lenny Kravitz: I believe that God is my creator, our creator. Whether we realize it or not, I believe we are all created by the same God. I believe we are all one creation, we are all connected, and I believe that God is the ultimate source of love and all we are looking for.

Lenny Kravitz: Yes. I start on drums and then I go to a guitar, a bass, another guitar, keyboard, percussion… I keep layering as though I was painting, until my picture is complete. Allison Kugel: Your upcoming album is called Raise Vibration and the first single, It’s Enough, is a call-to-action anthem about political corruption and social and racial injustice. Was writing It’s Enough a form of therapy for you, and a way of turning hopelessness into empowerment?

Allison Kugel: What was it about The Jackson 5 that resonated with you?

Allison Kugel: It’s interesting to hear you say that. My son is half Jewish and half Jamaican, and he does the same thing. He tends to gravitate towards people he sees on television, in film, and with music, who have his skin tone and his hair. Lenny Kravitz: Yup! I have the same background, except I’m Jewish and Bahamian.

Lenny Kravitz: I react to the world. I actually recorded the song twice. I was trying to find the direction for the record. The way the song started, the first version of It’s Enough was a full-on guitar, bass, drum, punk rock song. It had an angry tone, because that felt like the proper reaction. And then I thought about it and ended up changing it and finding this groove, which is the polar opposite of how it started. I found that by being calm and centered, and by being quiet, it was more effective. It brought out a whole new feeling in the song, and I think it enables the listener to hear the lyrics even better.

Allison Kugel: When and where do you feel most creative and musical?

Allison Kugel: What does the title of your album, Raise Vibration, mean to you? And how do you raise your vibration? Do you meditate or pray?

Lenny Kravitz: It could be anywhere, but it’s [typically] in the studio. My studio is in the Bahamas. It’s

Lenny Kravitz: It means exactly that; waking up. I meditate, I pray, I try to be still, I try to be quiet… and listen.

Allison Kugel: I always say that when I enter a room, I never walk alone because I can feel the presence of God beside me; as well as my great grandparents, my grandparents, my parents, siblings and my son. I walk into a space with the energy of those who made me who I am. When you enter a space, who walks beside you? Lenny Kravitz: God is with me at all times which I am always aware of. And the energy of my mother, of my grandmother, of my grandfather. My daughter (actress, Zoe Kravitz), who is here with me on this earth, is always with me. Like you said, knowing that and knowing that spirit is far superior to anything here. The physical presence is wonderful, and something that we require and crave as human beings. We’re spiritual beings living a physical experience, but as you say, you recognize that you have these people with you and it just shows how strong spirit is and how strong energy is. My mother’s (the late actress, Roxie Roker) been gone for twenty plus years, and I can still feel her every day. Allison Kugel: Your music transcends genre. It’s a blend of rock, punk, blues, soul, pop; it’s everything. You can’t categorize it. I remember seeing a television clip of you from Oprah’s Master Class, where you tell the story of sitting in class as a young boy and you didn’t know which box to check off on a piece of paper asking you to identify your race. Everyone’s life has a spiritual theme. In your case it seems to be an ongoing theme where people want to put you in a box and label you, and you railing against that. Lenny Kravitz: People love a box (laughs)! They want to put you right in it, so they can easily define, for their own comfort, what you are. I’ve been fighting against that from day one in my life, and in my musical life. Going back to that time in school, I knew I was black, but I knew that wasn’t all I

was. I knew I was also Russian Jewish, and I knew that my great grandmother was full-blooded Cherokee Indian. My mother always taught me, “Yes, you’re black, but you’re just as much this and you’re just as much that. Don’t discount that.” If you’re mixed, like me and like your son, you don’t discount one of your parents. You’re just as much one as the other. But, what my mother did say to me when I was a child that I think was very smart, and I didn’t realize it until I got older, was, “Even though you’re mixed, society only wants to see you as black.” I didn’t understand that at age seven. Allison Kugel: Did you feel diminished by it at the age of seven? Lenny Kravitz: From what I recall, I remember thinking, “What does that mean?” Of course, as I grew and went through life, I understood what that meant. People aren’t going to see all the complexities and differences. People are going to see what they see, and that is the color of your skin. That was a very good lesson once it kicked in. I was like, “Okay, people don’t see everything for what it is.”

released, what will that day be like for you? Lenny Kravitz: When I’m finished with an album, I’m at that place where I let go and I’m excited that I’m finished. It’s always exciting getting a new project out. I hope the people who enjoy my music will get something beautiful from it and will relate to it. The main thing for me is that I expressed myself authentically to who I am, who I was at that moment in time, and that it represents me well. That to me is everything. That’s a success. Lenny Kravitz: The music that was made by these kids was not elementary; it wasn’t bubble gum, as they used to say back then about young artists. This was sophisticated, high-level music with the best musicians, the best producers, and [Michael] was one of the best singers who ever lived and who ever will live. It was a perfect storm for me, the way everything came together. On top of the music, the presentation and showmanship were top level and soulful, and these were people that I could identify with. They looked like me. I had the same hair… there were so many things that came together in my mind.

Folds of Honor In front of a standingroom-only crowd, John Pillar, PGA Director of Golf Operations at Woodloch Springs, announced the birth of a new destination partnership bringing closer together Woodloch Resort, an award-winning family resort in the Pocono Mountains, and Folds of Honor, a nonprofit organization which provides educational scholarships to families of military men and women who have fallen or been disabled while on active duty. Race Registration Open Island members of the 106th that were killed in action, including Major Andreas O’Keeffe, Master Sergeant Christopher Raguso, Technical Sergeant Dashan Briggs, and Major Christopher Zanetis. Additionally, in honor of their memory, County Executive Bellone will be running with active duty members of the 106th Rescue Wing. Members of the 106th will be participating in both the full marathon and the relay race to honor their fallen airmen. This year’s race will also feature a County Executive’s Cup, which is a new trophy that active duty military personnel who participate in the Full Marathon are eligible for. The trophy will be awarded to whichever Military Branch finishes with the top score overall and will have their division name engraved into it. The winners will then be able to take the trophy back to their base until next year’s race. In order to participate, there must be a minimum of five people per branch, and they must be registered for the full marathon. Scoring will be calculated by adding the placement numbers of each runner together, and for each additional runner that crosses the finish line after the first five initial runners, five points will be deducted, with a maximum deduction of 25 points. The team with the lowest score will be awarded the County Executive’s Cup. The trophy has been generously donated by the Ronayne Family.

All four races begin and end in vibrant downtown Patchogue. The marathon course travels through numerous other scenic downtowns on the south shore as well, which are Blue Point, Bayport, Sayville, Oakdale, and Great River. The full marathon course will turn around in Heckscher State Park before entering the scenic Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Great River. The half marathon turns around on the former St. John’s University campus (now Amity Education Group campus). After turning around in their respective locations, both the full and half marathons travel back down Montauk Highway to their starting point in Patchogue. The 5K will travel on Montauk Highway to Blue Point before turning around. In addition to the races being held, the FreedomFest will begin at 9:00 a.m., shortly after the first 5k runners finish and just before the first Half Marathoners will finish. The event will feature three stages of live musical entertainment and include more than 40 vendors that will highlight local craft breweries, award winning wines, and local food and produce. The street festival will include many familyfriendly events, including pumpkin painting, lawn games and other fun activities. Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland said, “The Suffolk County Marathon has become a fixture in our community. The passion exhibited by those who run and those

who sponsor runners is emblematic of the wide spread support for our County’s most brave and selfless, our veterans. As chair of the Legislature’s Veterans Committee, I participated in the review and awarding of the grants from the proceeds of the marathon. The benefits our Suffolk County veterans will receive from these proceeds will go a long way to serve their needs. I encourage everyone to run or sponsor a runner to continue to raise these needed funds.” Suffolk County Legislator William Spencer said: “I am proud to have been a part of making the Blue Mile, an event in last year’s Suffolk County marathon. The Gregory Foundation for Cancer Research will host a Biden Cancer Summit on September 21st, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Northwell Health’s corporate headquarters at 2000 Marcus Ave. in New Hyde Park. This summit will address a patient’s cancer journey

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced several exciting changes ahead of the Catholic Health Services 4th Annual Suffolk County Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K and Relay Race, which will be held on Sunday, October 28th, 2018 in Patchogue. The changes for this year’s marathon include the event being dedicated to the members of the Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing and the addition of the County Executive’s Cup. “Every year, the Suffolk County Marathon allows us to raise money to help the tens of thousands of veterans who call Suffolk County home,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “This year we were able to add new features for our runners, including dedicating the race to the 106th Rescue Wing, who faced a tremendous loss earlier this year. I encourage everyone to come out to the races, whether you are running or enjoying FreedomFest, to show your support for our veterans.” In March, seven members of the 106th Rescue Wing of the New York Air National Guard in Westhampton Beach were killed when a U.S. helicopter crashed in Iraq; four of whom were from Long Island. In honor of the service members that were lost, this year’s race will be dedicated to the brave members of the Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing. Each leg of the Relay Race will be specifically dedicated to one of the four Long

Making Strides Against Cancer The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks will occur on Sunday, October 21st, 2018 at Jones Beach and Sunday, October 28th, 2018 at Suffolk County Community CollegeEastern Campus, uniting communities, honor those touched by the disease and raise awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer. The event at Jones Beach is the most attended event in the United States with over 65,000 volunteer participants, helping to raise nearly $3 million dollars. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation. The noncompetitive, inspirational event raises awareness and funds to end breast cancer and provide hope to ensure no one faces breast cancer

alone. Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research; provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most. In 2017, ACS staff helped guide more than 40,000 cancer patients through every step of their journey as they moved through the health care system, including helping with insurance problems, referring them to ACS and other local services, assisting caregivers and addressing obstacles to care. “Because of the determination of Making Strides supporters, the American Cancer Society is there for people in every community affected by breast cancer, whether they’re currently dealing with a diagnosis, may
