The Matinecock District (Scouts BSA) will be hosting a jam-packed Webelos Woods scouting experience to share with all the local youths on Sunday October 4th at the Seminary of Immaculate Conception (440 West Neck Road, Huntington) from 10am-5pm. Normally an overnight event, the 2020 Webelos Woods will be a spectacular day event open to all local Boys and Girls with their adult supervisor at this Boy Scout event. Although it is the annual opportunity for giving the
10 and 11-year-old Webelos Scouts to figure out which Troop they are going to join, it is also a chance for the visitors to see what type of program Scouting BSA runs and things to look forward to if they join as Cub Scouts and then stick with the program. The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.
To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals:

Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle. Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable. Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.
As like many other non-profit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. The coronavirus pandemic resulted in the first-ever virtual version of the annual Elementary School Science Fair by the US Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory. In the past, the winners displayed their science projects in the lobby of the Suffolk County Legislature’s building for the Legislators and public to see during the Legislature’s General Meeting, at which time the Legislators recognized their respective students. Students in kindergarten through sixth grade entered 129 science and engineering projects, which represented 38 elementary schools from across Suffolk County. Brookhaven Lab scientists, engineers, technical staff and teachers from local

elementary schools judged the competition. “I congratulate all of the students for participating in this annual science fair during the pandemic and commend all who made this project possible during this time. Navya received the Gold Medal, which is the highest level of achievement.
Cilmi said, “Navya is a shining example of the best of our youth. This is not the first time she has been honored by me. In 2017, Navya placed first in the 6th Grade level at the annual Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Fair. She is a delightful young lady who will no doubt be very successful in anything

How To Manage Low Bandwidth During Remote Learning Sessions
In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, many schools hastily transitioned from traditional in-person learning to remote learning. This transition posed new and unique challenges to educators as well as students and their parents. One of the biggest challenges posed by remote learning was keeping students connected to their teachers and their classmates, not all of whom had readily available access to devices that could facilitate such connections. In recognition of that challenge, school systems worked to procure devices for students only to be confronted by another challenge: low bandwidth. According to Microsoft, bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be transferred over an internet connection per second. Low bandwidth can compromise students’ ability to stay connected to their virtual classrooms. In an effort to help
students overcome that challenge, Microsoft offers the following tips on how educators, students and parents can manage low bandwidth during remote learning sessions. • Reduce reliance on video during class sessions. Turning video cameras off during live class sessions can help to overcome the challenges posed by low bandwidth, as live video is a key contributor to excessive use of bandwidth. If video must be used, encourage students to turn off their cameras when they are not speaking. • Use pre-recorded content. Pre-recording content enables students to stream video over the internet, saving those with low bandwidth the hassle of downloading large video files to their computers. Microsoft recommends educators who prerecord content for their students to stream to instruct those students to use class time to complete assignments.
Educators can make themselves available via chat to answer questions students may have about their assignments. • Avoid video-based assignments. It can be difficult for students with low bandwidth to send very large files, such as videos. Educators can help students avoid that issue by not requiring them to submit videos as part of their assignments. • Encourage students to sync files to their devices. Each device is different and each manufacturer has its own instructions on how to sync files to devices. But Microsoft notes that syncing files to a device allows students to read them offline, which is ideal for students with limited internet connectivity. Low bandwidth poses a challenge for remote learners. Thankfully, there are ways to overcome low bandwidth so students can keep learning.

The annual Over 50 Fair, in its 11th year, will be a virtual charity conference benefitting The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). Usually the Over 50 Fair takes place at an area hotel and has attendance of 500-700 who enjoy its 30 exceptional classes, singles lounge, senior beauty queens, and more. Because of COVID-19, this year’s
event can be enjoyed by computer or phone on September 12 and 13 from 12-4 each day. 10 local speakers, some of whom are experts in their field, will be sharing information about a variety of topics of interest to Baby Boomers and seniors, including long term care insurance, a comedy show, Microsoft training, reverse mortgages, and cleaning
without chemicals. The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates the hugely successful All Kids Fair each year. She said that the Over 50 Fair is always “Overflowing with Opportunities for Age 50+,” although this year is a bit scaled down due to being virtual. The exciting weekend-
long 2020 Over 50 Fair will be a fundraiser for The INN, a local non-profit that helps provide assistance to the hungry, needy, and homeless right here on Long Island. In 2014, shortly after being sworn in as the County Legislator for the 13 Legislative District, Legislator Trotta met Lia Edlin Miller, of East Northport, then a second grade student who had won First Place in the Second Grade Division of the annual Brookhaven National Lab’s annual elementary school science fair. Her project, “Do the Eyes Tell All?” focused on whether a person could
discern people’s emotions by looking at their eyes. Through her research, she determined that it was easier to identify happy and angry people, rather than individuals who were sad, tired, thinking or scared. Now in 2020 with the coronavirus pandemic and the mandate that people are required to wear face coverings, we can only see the eyes of each other. Lia is using her sewing skills to make masks, made out
of cotton, doubled sided, reversible and washable. She started on April 1 and has made over 3,200 masks for the community. She does this on a donation basis and uses the profits to cover her cost of materials and the remainder she donates to various charities including the Huntington Tri-CYO, Northport High School Food Pantry, Lewis Oliver Farm Sanctuary, Northport Cat Reserve, Second Loves Rescue

later went on to become U.S. Circuit Court Judge for the Second Circuit. He began his political career in 1963 when he was elected Councilman of the Town of Hempstead. Two years later, he was elected Town Supervisor. In 1968, he was appointed to the New York State Supreme Court and, in 1972, at the age of 42, became the youngest judge elected to the NYS Court of Appeals. In 1985, he was appointed Chief Judge of the state of New York and the Court of Appeals, both positions he held until 1993. Mr. Wachtler was also the Founder and First Chair of both New York’s State Federal Judicial Council and the
National State Federal Judicial Council. He also chaired the Committee on Public Safety for the Nassau County Board of Supervisors. He currently serves as a Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Constitutional Law and the First Amendment at the Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center in Central Islip. He graduated from Washington and Lee University where he received both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws.
