Joseph, 17 will begin his Senior year at Centereach High School. An accomplished performer, Joseph has been performing at various theaters throughout Long Island since he was 5 years old. Most recently he has been the lead in Les Miserables and Shrek. It was an honor to have Joseph sing “The National Anthem”, who sang a beautiful rendition.

This fall marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The attacks on September 11, 2001 remain the deadliest terror attacks in world history, claiming more than 2,900 lives and causing countless injuries and long-term health problems for tens of thousands of civilians and first responders. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 will no doubt evoke responses that span the emotional spectrum. Sadness may dominate such responses, but the anniversary of 9/11 also is a great time to reflect on the efforts of first responders. First responders played a vital role on 9/11, and many lost their lives and/or suffered long-term health consequences resulting from their selfless efforts to save innocent victims of the attacks. In the two decades since the 9/11 attacks, first responders have continued to make countless sacrifices to ensure their communities are safe and peaceful places to call home. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 is a great time to recognize the efforts of first responders and honor them for all they do.
Administration, 54 percent of active firefighting personnel are volunteers. Many of those volunteer firefighters work for underfunded departments that are in need of financial support. Donating to such departments is a great way to show first responders how much their efforts are appreciated. Donations may be used to purchase new equipment, upgrade existing facilities, provide vital training, and/or improve response times, the latter of which can increase the likelihood that firefighters make it through calls safe and sound.
• Back legislation to support wounded first responders. Many first responders suffer significant mental and physical injuries while on the job. Various nonprofit organizations help wounded first responders who may need to make modifications to their homes or purchase costly equipment to get through their daily lives. But nonprofit organizations cannot go it alone in support of wounded first responders. Citizens can do their part by promoting and voting for local, state and national legislation that makes it easy for wounded first responders to get the help • Donate to local fire departments. they need, when they need it. such legislation, private citizens can utilize social media to promote proposals and other efforts to support wounded first responders. Many 9/11 first responders are still fighting for government-backed support to treat injuries suffered 20 years ago, and a vocal citizenry can be a strong asset in their fight and the fight of countless others in need of help. • Commit to supporting first responders year-round. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 will call attention to the efforts of first responders on that day 20 years ago as well as the countless times since then that these brave men and women have served their communities. But first responders deserve vocal, year-round support. Make a concerted effort to thank policemen, firefighters, EMTs, nurses, and doctors in your community whenever you interact with them, and urge others to follow suit. First responders play a vital role in communities across the globe. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 can serve as a catalyst for communities to express their support for first responders.

How To Honor First Responders

design was chosen from 1,100 submissions. The Pentagon Memorial sits on two acres of land just outside where Flight 77 struck the building. The memorial includes 184 benches that are dedicated to each of the victims. The benches are organized in a timeline of their ages, stretching from the youngest victim, 3-yearDana Falkenberg, to the oldest, 71-year-old John Yamnicky. Each bench is engraved with a victim’s name and arches over a shallow reflecting pool of water, lit from below. The benches for the passengers who were aboard the plane at the time of the crash are positioned so visitors will face the sky when reading the victim’s name. The benches dedicated to the victims who were inside the building are positioned so their names and the Pentagon are in the
same view. A curved wall known as the Age Wall also is a significant part of the memorial. The wall increases in height from 3 inches to 71 inches to represent the ages of the victims. Eighty-five paperbark maple trees were clustered throughout the memorial, and these trees feature foliage that changes to orange and red each fall. The trees will eventually grow to 30 feet, providing a canopy of shade over the memorial. The Pentagon Memorial is free and open seven days a week year-round, though visitors are urged to contact the Memorial in advance due to potential restrictions or closures related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Each September 11, communities across the United States commemorate the lives lost during the 2001 terrorist attacks that took place on American soil. On September 11, 2001, four commercial airplanes were hijacked and sent to various targets in the United States. Two planes crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, one plane crashed into the U.S. Pentagon Building near Washington, D.C., and a fourth plane was intercepted from the hijackers and crash-landed in rural Pennsylvania. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, President George W. Bush declared Friday, September 14, 2001 as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the terrorist attacks. But many people felt there should be an annual event dedicated to preserving the memory of the victims and the heroism of the first responders. A bill to make September 11 a national day of mourning was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on October 25, 2001. The bill passed the Senate unanimously. On September 11, 2002, the country recognized the first Patriot Day. On this day, the U.S. flag is flown at half-mast. In addition, a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. is observed to correspond with the attacks. While not a federal holiday — schools and businesses remain open — memorial ceremonies are held for the 2,977 victims, including an annual reading of names of the people who lost their lives.
Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta Recognizes Four Eagle Scouts from Troop 7
Legislator Rob Trotta recently recognized four Eagle Scouts at a group Eagle Scout Court of Honor. They all earned this distinguished rank through their consistent commitment and dedication to scouting, and the successful completion of their Eagle Scout Leadership Project. Legislator Trotta said, “I congratulate these young men for their preservation
and landscaping efforts to restore and maintain some of our wonderful community institutions, which will benefit so many people for years to come.” The following scouts earned the rank of Eagle: Matthew J. Schepis, St. James, refurbished the flowerbeds and enhanced the appearance of the area at Sts. Philip and James Bethany Center. Skyler M. Bazer,
St. James, did a total restoration of the bathroom at Caleb Smith State Park in Smithtown. Braden M. Condon, Smithtown, built and stained a fence at the Smithtown Historical Society in Smithtown. Aiden R. Giordan, Lake Grove, constructed an outdoor classroom at the Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown.

At 9:37 a.m. on September 11, 2001, five hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia. All 53 passengers and six crew members perished in the crash, and an additional 125 military and civilian personnel on the ground were killed in the fire caused by the crash. The hijacking of Flight 77 was part of the broader attack on 9/11, which remains the deadliest terrorist attack in world history. The Pentagon Memorial was created to honor the 184 people whose lives were lost at the Pentagon on 9/11, as well as their families and all those who sacrifice to protect and preserve the freedom of Americans. Town Board Approves Additional Sixth Annual Outreach/John Brower, Jr. Renovations To Improve The Foundation 5K Walk Set for Smithtown Parks System Saturday, September 11th
The Town of Smithtown town board authorized the Parks Department to make additional improvements to the Town’s Parks System. Additional upgrades are planned for Burr Winkle, Whitman Hollow, Moriches and Charles P.Toner/Armory Parks. Additions include new basketball, tennis/ pickleball courts, and new synthetic turf for baseball fields. “Outdoor leisure is vital for both the mental and physical well being of every resident, young and old. With so much uncertainty out there over the Delta variant, we believe that the Town has an obligation to improve as many of our outdoor facilities as we possibly can, as we weather this storm another year together… The Smithtown Parks Department has truly earned their stripes over the last two years especially. They work around the clock, sanitizing and maintaining our public spaces, and have an exceptionally big list of major projects, both
completed and soon to be underway. No matter how busy they are, the work they’ve done thus far has been superior… They truly love creating and improving the facilities for our residents to enjoy. I am deeply grateful for their continued efforts and commitment to the people of Smithtown.” Supervisor Ed Wehrheim The reconditioning of the Basketball courts at Moriches Park, which have become increasingly popular over the last two years, will ensure player safety, and an optimal game experience. Additionally, the town will be adding synthetic turf to the Baseball infield which will improve playing conditions and add to field time. Renovations plans at Burr Winkle Park include the complete resurfacing of the basketball and tennis courts. One of the tennis courts will be converted to allow for Pickleball. The town received a number of requests from the community, at the time the Capital Budget
was presented, to include pickleball conversions in our park renovations plans. In Nesconset, the Town plans to refurbish the tennis court surfacing, adding pickleball conversion to Charles P.Toner/Armory Park. These improvements are in addition to the projects laid out in the Capital Improvements budget, which include the complete renovation of East Hills and Laurel Drive Parks. Both community parks projects were pushed to the Fall, so as not to interrupt families from enjoying the facilities while kids were at home, and coronavirus numbers were down. Construction work is set to begin once the school year is in session. Recently completed parks projects include the construction of new playgrounds at Short Beach and Flynn Memorial park. A major facelift is currently underway at Whitman Hollow Park, with new sidewalks, drainage and infrastructure repairs.
The Sixth Annual Outreach/John Brower, Jr. Foundation 5K Walk to raise funds and awareness about the opioid crisis on Long Island will be held Saturday, September 11th, beginning at 9 a.m. at Jones Beach Field 1. The event, which has raised more than $180,000 since its inception, is held annually to honor the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opioid overdose at age 25. Proceeds from the walk support Outreach, the Queens and Long Island-based organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction. John and Jody Brower, the parents of John Brower, Jr., formed the foundation in 2015 to raise awareness of drug abuse, and to help raise funds to end the opioid epidemic on Long Island. After being introduced to Outreach shortly after their son’s passing, the Browers
were impressed by the organization’s dedication to helping those struggling with addiction. They decided to target the foundation’s fundraising efforts to support life-saving programs at Outreach and other Long Island organizations. John Venza, vice president for adolescent and residential services at Outreach, said, “We are especially excited for the John Brower, Jr., 5K Walk this year. We’re proud to be able to partner once again with the extraordinary Brower family, whose dedication to eradicating the heroin epidemic continues to inspire us. This non-profit was founded in 1965 by Reverend J.A. Gaines, his wife, Reverend Rose Marie Gaines, and her mother, Florence E. Meringola. After witnessing local poverty conditions first hand, they invested everything that they had with the view that if they could help even one person it was worth the investment! They worked very hard and sacrificed much to build a strong community and leave a great legacy to be carried on. Their prayer was that the Helping Hand Rescue Mission would remain a “lighthouse” in our community. 56 years later, their work continues under the direction of the founders’ daughter, Rev. Kimberly Gaines-Gambino, who functions as the President/Pastor of this organization. She has also served as Pastor of Half Hollow Community Church in Dix Hills from 2011-2019, however she resigned from that position in January of 2020 to devote more of her time to the work of HHRM. She is a wife to her husband Andrew and mom & stepmom to five amazing kids. How does HHRM serve others? Feeding The Hungry: HHRM serves approximately 200-300 families per week with non-perishable items and fresh produce, fruit, meat, eggs, milk and bread. Since March 21, 2020, they have given out over 27,000 food bags to people in need on Long Island. HHRM partners with many schools, organizations, temples, churches, youth organizations, civic organizations, clubs, businesses, and
the many individuals and families donating to our pantry to gather food for the hungry. School Supply Distribution: Every child deserves to have the supplies they need for their education, feel confident in a room with their peers and be prepared for their school year. This non-profit gathers and distributes school supplies to local children that are in need. Baby Blessings: Baby Blessings is a part of HHRM that focuses on providing families with children under 3 years old with diapers, baby clothes, other baby supplies and a brunch! Baby Blessings is hosted at Huntington Assembly of God every third Tuesday of the month. HHRM is so thankful to partner with Family Service League, the Allied Foundation and Huntington Assembly of God to make Baby Blessings possible. Community Closet: HHRM runs something called the Community Closet, which provides new and gently used seasonallyappropriate clothing to anyone in need during it’s hours of operation. Appropriate clothing can be a genuinely difficult expense for families, especially since most have children that are always growing. Helping Hand Rescue Mission also holds various other outreach programs, some of which are seasonal. There are many ways you can volunteer with, donate to or receive help from HHRM. All personal documents are safely destroyed by Data Shredding Service, Inc., a full-service confidential shredding service located on Corporate Drive in Hauppauge.

The Flight 93 National Memorial
are urged to contact the Memorial in advance due to potential restrictions or closures related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In September 2005, the Flight 93 Advisory Commission, which included family members of the victims as well as design and art professionals and
community and national leaders, chose a design proposal submitted by Paul Murdoch Architects and Nelson Byrd Woltz Architects from among 1,100 entries. The Flight 93 National Memorial includes the Tower of Voices, a 93-foottall musical instrument that holds 40
wind chimes, one to represent each of the 40 passengers and crew members who perished in the crash. The tower is located on an oval concrete plaza that includes two curved concrete benches facing the opening of the tower. The tower is surrounded by concentric rings of white pines and deciduous plantings. A live webcam of the Tower of Voices can be viewed at https://www. flight93friends.org/plan-your-visit/ webcams. Visitors to the Flight 93 National Memorial also can visit the Memorial Plaza. The Memorial Plaza features the Wall of Names, which is made up of 40 white polished marble stones inscribed with the names of the passengers and crew who were aboard Flight 93 on 9/11. The Memorial Plaza extends onequarter mile alongside the area where Flight 93 crashed. Visitors can walk along the Memorial Plaza and view the impact site, including a grove of eastern hemlock trees that were damaged by the crash. A gap in the tree line is still visible and serves as a lasting “scar” of the crash. At 10:03 a.m. on September 11, 2001, the last of four planes that were hijacked earlier that morning crashed into a field near the town of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The people behind the 9/11 attacks later claimed the hijackers who commandeered the plane intended to crash it into the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., but passengers and crew stormed the cockpit, prompting the hijackers to crash the plane into the field, which is less than 20 minutes’ flying time to Washington, D.C. The efforts of passengers and crew onboard Flight 93 were nothing short of heroic. Though everyone aboard the flight perished in the crash, the attack on the U.S. Capitol was thwarted, saving untold number of lives. All passengers and crew on board Flight 93 were awarded a Congressional Gold Medal on September 11, 2014. The Flight 93 National Memorial is located in Stonycreek Township in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, roughly two miles north of Shanksville. The memorial was opened to family members of the victims on September 10, 2015, and is now open to the public seven days a week, 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset, though visitors

September 11, 2001, was a tragic day in American history. On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crash-landed. The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together, have created a lasting impression. While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks, is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families.

The many families who attended the events
learned how Aphids, a common pest, can cause harm to a variety of plant life. Lady Beetle’s, also known as Ladybugs, which are a natural predator to Aphids, help control their population. Quick fact: Ladybugs can eat up to 5,000 aphids in their lifetime! The hands-on events included welcoming 60 Suffolk County Girls Scouts, ages 5 through 14, and their parents, from Northport, East Northport, South Huntington, Kings Park and Dix Hills. “We are honored to be an educator to the community and are always looking to be good stewards to the environment,” said Kristyn Hovanec, Marketing Manager, Pinelawn. “All of our events book up and sell out almost immediately after they’re announced. Among the more indelible images to emerge on September 11, 2001 was the sight of two planes crashing into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center. Still photos and video footage of those planes flying into the Twin Towers were the first images of the attacks many Americans saw, and no one who watched events unfold that morning will ever forget those images. Though both the North and South Towers fell on that day, today the site where each tower once stood is a serene retreat in the bustling lower Manhattan neighborhood that was shaken to its core on the day of the attacks. The 9/11 Memorial was designed by architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum notes that Arad and Walker’s proposal was chosen in a design competition that featured 5,201 submissions from 63 countries. The 9/11 Memorial is located on the western side of the formal World Trade Center where the Twin Towers once stood. Two enormous reflecting pools are part of the Memorial Plaza, which is where the North and South Towers once stood. The pools feature the two largest man-made waterfalls in North America. Around the edges of the pools, the names of people who were killed in the 9/11 attacks in New York, the Pentagon, on Flight 93, and in the 1993 bombing at the World Trade Center are etched in bronze. In recognition of the crash sites, 400 swamp white oak trees were selected from nurseries located in New York, Pennsylvania and near Washington, D.C. These trees are located throughout the Memorial Plaza, providing a peaceful respite separate from the surrounding city. The Memorial Plaza also includes one Callery pear tree. That tree was discovered at Ground Zero weeks after the attacks and it was severely damaged. The tree, now known as the Survivor Tree, was nursed back to health by members of the New York City Parks and Recreation Department and returned to the World Trade Center site in 2010, where it still stands as an enduring symbol of resilience and perseverance. Life’s WORC’s Family Center for Autism Awards 10 Scholarships
Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary – Celebrate 50! - recently awarded ten new scholarships valued at over $11,000. The scholarships were provided to those who are financiallychallenged so that they too can access Life’s WORC’s Family Center for Autism’s programs. These recent scholarships were awarded to individuals on the Autism Spectrum ranging in age from 10 to 22 years old. They are being used for classes and activities in the Children’s Breakfast Club, Friday Night Social Scene, Culinary Connections, Teen Zumba, Adult Baking, Teen Baking, Teen Technology, Teen Painting, among others. Family Center for Autism’s scholarship funds are generated through private donations and
enable the organization to offer scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 to pay for any of its programs. Since its inception in 2015, the program has awarded approximately 250 scholarships valued at over $250,000. More About Life’s WORC Life’s WORC was founded 50 years ago after the closing of Willowbrook State School back in the early 1970s. As a young reporter, Geraldo Rivera exposed the deplorable conditions that existed within the then largest institution in the nation serving children with developmental disabilities.
Rivera first learned about these conditions from Life’s WORC founder Victoria Schneps. Her daughter, Lara, diagnosed at an early age with severe brain damage, was a resident at Willowbrook. When cuts in state funding caused the institution to fall into extensive disrepair, Schneps, along with other concerned individuals, picketed to fight for the rights of Willowbrook’s more than 5,000 residents. Rivera’s report, which earned him a Peabody Award, ultimately forced the closing of Willowbrook. Schneps started Life’s WORC and opened its first home in Little Neck, Queens. Its first residents were former Willowbrook residents. Today, Life’s WORC provides beautiful homes located across the region, from Nassau and Suffolk to Queens and Manhattan, in addition to community services, financial and trust services, and the programs and services of its Family Center for Autism.

Treglia Named Swimming All-American
Leah Treglia is among the elite high school swimmers in the nation. And that was recently underscored as Treglia, a rising junior at Smithtown High School West, was named a National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association girls high school swimming AllAmerican. Treglia’s honor came from her standout showing in the 100-yard backstroke. She produced a time of 55.45 seconds at the county championships — the top public-school
time in the state and second overall during the 2020-21 academic year. Treglia won her first two county titles this past season — in the 100 fly and 100 backstroke. She suggested she was proud to represent Smithtown on the All-America list, which comprises the top prep swimmers in the nation. “It definitely means a lot to be top 100 in the country,” Treglia said. “I’m very proud of that.” Treglia said her best event a couple of years ago had been the 100 fly,
but she worked diligently the past year at the 100 backstroke and now labels that her best event. “I’ve worked very hard in the 100 back the last year,” she said. She intends to swim in college after graduating from High School West in June 2023. Treglia has been a member of the varsity high school swim team since the seventh grade, which now is combined with Hauppauge. She also competes with the Hauppauge Swim Club.
