Brain Aneurysm Awareness Walk Returns At Jones Beach State Park Hundreds of walkers, from brain aneurysm survivors to their families and supporters, are expected to attend Long Island’s 11th annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Saturday, September 21. The fun-filled event, which includes a fourmile run and two-mile walk, is hosted by the Brain Aneurysm Center at Northwell Health’s Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery, along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF). Proceeds will benefit both organizations, raising funds to support essential research. “Thanks to hundreds of participants, we have raised $700,000 since the walk’s inception and it continues to grow steadily each year,” said David Chalif, MD, director of Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center. “It is a time for brain aneurysm survivors and their families to celebrate life and also a time to remember those who have lost a loved one to a brain aneurysm.” At this year’s walk, one of the guest speakers will
be Greg McGeady, 34, of Clifton Park, NY, who lost his older brother to a ruptured brain aneurysm last year. Other guest speakers will include two brain aneurysm survivors: Luisina Alonzo, 22, of Bellerose and Cynthia Mathis, 40, of New Hyde Park. One of the goals of this annual event is to increase awareness about the warning signs of a brain aneurysm. The symptoms can include severe headache, nausea, blurred or double vision, stiff neck or neck pain, pain above or behind the eye and loss of sensation. Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5, 1000 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh. The start time is 10 a.m. and the event will be held rain or shine. The fee is $25 through September 9; $30 afterward. Entry fee includes the cost of parking and snacks. T-shirts will be handed out on a firstcome, first-serve basis. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology
departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. The Social Brain would like to thank all who came out to the Basket Night Fundraiser on Friday, August 16th. They raised $2,600 and received another $900 in corporate donations! Additionally, they just wrapped up their East End 4-Week Social Skills Sessions. These were successful and helped children and young adults from Patchogue to as far east as Sag Harbor. They completed fun projects and encouraged a team approach to complete each week’s classes. They would like to give a special thanks to Peconic Speech Services of Riverhead for collaborating with their organization to host these classes. Keep your eye out for another set of classes coming during this upcoming school year. A recommended contri-bution of $2.50 per meal is suggested. Contributions are used to expand
services and are returned back to the program. There are no required costs to participate in this program. Funding for this program is provided by the U.S. Administration for Community Living, the New York State Office for the Aging, Suffolk County Office for the Aging, and the Town of Smithtown. Meals on Wheels is meant to be a temporary service, and reassessments are administered on a semi-annual and as-needed basis. No emergency services are provided through this program.

“Pizza Box Top” Event Smithtown’s younger generation of volunteers participated in the annual Town of Smithtown Pizza Box Top Project on August 16th. This youthled initiative helps to prevent underage drinking, the sale of or providing alcohol to minors. Five Pizza Parlors participated in this years “Pizza Box Top” campaign. The youth volunteers adhered approximately 1,200 stickers to carry out bags from the pizza parlors. “I’m so pleased to see our younger generations take action and educate adults… I’m a big fan of the work that our Youth Bureau, Community Alliance and Horizons Center do to improve our community and way of life. Neil Foley Joins NYCBS As A Physician Liaison
The Smithtown Senior Citizens Department offers a Home Delivered Meals Program for residents ages 60 and over residing within the Town of Smithtown. Hot, nutritious meals are delivered by volunteers to the frail homebound elderly Mondays through Fridays. Each meal consists of one third of the current recommended dietary allowance for the 60 plus age group. Regular diets are provided, however accommodations for low sodium and diabetic diets can be fulfilled upon request. Food service is contracted with Zan’s Kosher Deli in Lake Grove. Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible for Meals on Wheels, applicants
must be: • Able to accept responsibility for consumption of meals Assessed in-home by the Meals on Wheels assessor. • Have no family or other persons capable of providing adequate meals • Physically or mentally unable to prepare or provide for their own nutritional needs • Unable to attend a congregate setting and have no alternative through which their nutritional needs can be met Currently, 115 Town of Smithtown residents participate in the Home Delivered Meals program daily. A recommended contri-
bution of $2.50 per meal is suggested. Contributions are used to expand services and are returned back to the program. There are no required costs to participate in this program. Funding for this program is provided by the U.S. Administration for Community Living, the New York State Office for the Aging, Suffolk County Office for the Aging, and the Town of Smithtown. For further information regarding this and other senior programs, call the Senior Center at 631-3607616. Meals on Wheels is meant to be a temporary service, and re-assessments are administered on a semi-annual and as-needed basis. No emergency services are provided through this program.
