Not So Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The autumn season is upon us. Well, at least in terms of retail, it is. As far as I’m concerned, there is still nearly one entire month of potential beach weather before us. No matter how many pairs of cute boots I see in stores, or autumn-scented candles and pumpkin-flavored everything, I remain in denial. Not yet. Maybe in a week or two…or three. What’s the big rush? For a region that happens to be blessed with all four seasons, we sure don’t take too much time to appreciate them.
“ending” is that all the catching up I was planning to do on various series and books, well, it just didn’t happen for one reason or another. Oh well. That’s what rainy days are for, I suppose. That and – dare I say it – any upcoming snow days?? In the meantime, try to enjoy this “last” week of summer – and maybe even the next few weekends as well. Through this program, RSVP of Suffolk volunteers refurbish these computers and give them to lowincome recipients. An RSVP volunteer also delivers and installs the donated computer. “In today’s world, access to a computer has become a necessity for most people. Unfortunately, there are many people who cannot afford this
valuable asset,” adds Victor Courtien, Volunteer Coordinator RSVP of Suffolk Community Computer Connections Program. “This donation to RSVP is a wonderful example of how TFCU and its employees give back to the community. I truly commend TFCU for their caring and generosity.” Team TFCU, TFCU’s employee involvement group, now in its seventh year, is made up of more than 600 volunteer TFCU employees who are also all local Long Islanders. We rush everything, much like our days, our weeks, our lives…and for what? To start complaining about the chilly weather and the inevitable snowstorms looming? As long as I can get away with wearing flip-flops, and running outside with no jacket on, you can bet I will. Longer days mean more time to do things too, instead of rushing home from work to hibernate on the couch in front of the TV. Although, I must say, I am looking forward to my shows returning for the Fall season. That said, the one regret I have about summer

Preparing For Celebration Honoring nurses who served in the military, the gathering of oral histories and displays of retrospective memorabilia are all part of Suffolk County Community College’s School of Nursing’s plans for a celebration beginning this fall and culminating with the school’s 50th pinning ceremony next May. The Suffolk County Community College School of Nursing boasts more than 7,100 alumni, is the largest program in New York State and the sixth largest in the nation. The School of Nursing is asking all alumni to contact the College to become part of a celebration leading up to the 50th pinning ceremony on May 15th, 2015. All those volunteering to help organize the event will be designated alumni ambassadors and deputized to help spread the word about the anniversary and its significance. “We are very proud to graduate nursing professionals who have worked in our communities
for a half century,” said College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “One of our College’s highly competitive programs and the largest in the state, our nursing program’s excellence is directly attributable to our faculty, staff, and students who are committed to nursing education. We are also very proud that a majority of our nursing graduates remain right here in our region where they serve with pride and distinction.” “Our nursing student body is diverse and highly motivated,” said College Associate Dean, School of Nursing Dr. Cheryl Shaffer, “they graduate as nursing leaders committed to helping individuals, families and communities.” “The 50th pinning ceremony and events leading up to next May’s event will provide an excellent opportunity for the thousands of alumni who graduated from our School of Nursing to reconnect with their friends, former professors and college community,” said Dr. Sylvia A. Hurricane Preparedness As part of an ongoing commitment to ensure the safety of water supply operations in all member districts, the Nassau Suffolk Water Commissioners’ Association (NSWCA) attended the recent Hurricane Seminar held at the Morrelly Homeland Security Center, Bethpage, NY. Deputy Commissioner Leonard B. Symons of the Town of Oyster Bay presided. The NSWCA was represented at the event by NSWCA Secretary Andrew Bader of Plainview Water District, and Commissioners Richard Niznik and Michael F. Rich III of Oyster Bay Water District. Focusing on effective planning for potentially catastrophic events like Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Irene, the seminar, hosted by the Town of Oyster Bay, included representatives from the National Hurricane Center, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), Nassau County, and PSEG. Of particular interest to the NSWCA were discussions regarding the improvement of forecasting and outreach, including partnerships with national, state and local emergency operation centers. “Long Island is vulnerable to storms
because of its geography,” said Commissioner Niznik. “No one knows what Mother Nature will bring. The seminar information indicated that the hurricane prediction for 2014 is anywhere from eight to thirteen named storms. The relative severity of the respective storms is unknown.” “NOAA will soon have a new map on their website that will show predicted storm surge and water levels from the ground up,” Commissioner Bader stated. “This will help us to prepare residents living in vulnerable areas.” NSWCA President Howard Abbondondelo, Commissioner from Albertson Water District added, “As elected Commissioners, it is incumbent upon us to continually safeguard our constituents and the water delivery systems that enable them to go about their daily lives. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone took the ice bucket challenge Sunday, August 17th, to support the ALS Association. He was nominated to join the fundraising effort by Town of Islip Supervisor Tom Croci. The County Executive dumped a large bucket of ice water on his head, while two of his children contributed by pouring their own buckets of water onto his head. Thousands of people, including such celebrities as Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey and Jimmy Fallon, have had buckets of icy water dumped on them
in a bid to raise funds for the ALS Association. Many, including the County Executive, are also writing $100 checks to the organization. “We all can’t lose sight of the fact that this campaign has made a tremendous impact toward funding research, providing patient services and promoting awareness about ALS,” the County Executive said. “ALS Association reports a 1,000% spike in donations since the campaign started and I am proud to also contribute to the cause.” The County Executive in turn challenged
Congressman Steve Israel, Southampton Supervisor Anna Throne-Holst and the entire Stony Brook University football team to take the fundraising challenge. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a neurodegenerative disease. On Thursday August 14th, Legislature John Kennedy attended the Holiday Inn Check Presentation for Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. $20,000 was donated to the hospital’s building fund. The new Stony Brook Children’s Hospital will be completed in 2016; it will be housed in a new
10-level Hospital Pavilion adjacent to Stony Brook University Hospital The expansion will feature a pediatric intensive care unit, adolescent unit, procedure suite, hematology/oncology unit, medical/surgical units and modern patient and family amenities; new adult critical care and cardiac
care units; an expanded imaging department; and increased support space throughout. The Hospital has a building fund goal of $25,000,000; so far, a total of $9,980,670 has been donated to the building fund.

Hauppauge High School honored Justin Block as the 2014 Distinguished Alumni. Block graduated from Hauppauge High School in 1980, received a Bachelor of Science from Cornell University in 1984 and a Juris Doctor from Hofstra University School of Law in 1988. Block is sole practitioner with Commack where he concentrates his general law practice in civil, criminal and commercial litigation; small business
counseling; and residential and commercial/ business and real estate transactions. He previously was a partner with Jaeger & Block, LLP, successor firm to Jaeger, Mari & Block. Prior to this he was the operations and personnel manager for Baumann & Sons Transportation Company, Inc. and also worked for the New York State Mediation Board as an arbitrator/mediator of labor disputes involving private and public sector employers and employees in the New York City and Metropolitan area. Block has served as a member of the House of Delegates of the New York State Bar Association from 2008-2012 and was a member of the Suffolk County Bar Association’s (SCBA) board of directors from 2005 to 2008. He currently is a member
of the SCBA’s executive committee serving as treasurer for the coming fiscal year and previously as secretary. Block has been the recipient of the SCBA’s Directors’ Award and has received numerous Awards of Recognition from the Association over the years. He has been a tireless worker for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the American Heart Association and has chaired the Ira P. Block Memorial Golf Classic – honoring his late father District Court Judge Ira P. Block – the proceeds of which are awarded as “Second Chance” Scholarships to Hauppauge High School seniors as well as to graduates of the Suffolk County Drug Court, who have successfully turned their lives around.
Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta recognized Northport Boy Scout Troop 41’s Daniel T. Tyska and Andrew T. Rapiejko at their recent Eagle Scout Court of Honor. They each earned the respected rank of Eagle Scout by completing a labor intensive communitybased Eagle Scout project. Legislator Trotta was joined by Assemblyman Andrew Raia, Robert Conte representing Senator Carl Marcellino, Huntington Town Councilwoman Susan Berland, Huntington Town Clerk Jo-ann Raia, a representative from the Huntington Marine Corp, and members of the Northport American Legion Post 694, the sponsor of the troop, in offering congratulations to the scouts. Daniel decided to enhance and beautify the Fuchs Pond Preserve in Northport, which is a five acre spring-fed freshwater pond and part of the Crabmeadow wetlands protected watershed. Fuchs Pond Preserve is
used extensively by the public for nature hikes and by Cornell Cooperative Extension to provide educational programs to students. Daniel led a group of volunteers in the designing and planting of a natural self-sustaining wildlife friendly garden on the front side of the main building. In choosing this environmental endeavor, Daniel sought to enrich the natural habitat for the abundant species of wildlife in the preserve. Legislator Trotta was impressed with Daniel’s commitment to the environment and said, “Your passion and dedication to this project has helped you attain the honorable rank of Eagle Scout. This undertaking is a textbook example of what it takes to be a leader and, hopefully, your preservation efforts will be an inspiration to us all.” Andrew’s Eagle Scout project consisted of making improvements to the Youth Directions and Alternatives (YDA)
building in East Northport. The YDA is a non-profit community and youth agency serving youths and their families in three local school districts. Leading a team of volunteers, Andrew planned the renovations which included designing and constructing oak radiator covers that were secured to the walls, insulating water pipes, and painting several public rooms. Legislator Trotta was impressed with Andrew’s passion for the youth in the area and stated, “Your hard work has paid off and now you have attained the highest rank of Eagle Scout. This project was a great way to give back to our residents and to provide our youth with a bright and updated center for their programs, as well as demonstrate your leadership and organizational skills.” Legislator Trotta urged both scouts to keep up the good work and to stay involved with our great community.
Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center honored Sally Rose and Charlene Lehmann at the Tournament of Tournaments Golf Outing on August 14th at Island Hills Golf Club in Sayville. According to the Centers for Disease Control, one out of every three people over the age of 65 fall each year, and many die as a result of injuries from a fall. The Gurwin Jewish ~ Fay J. Lindner Residences, Gurwin’s Assisted Living community (50 Hauppauge Road, Commack), will be hosting “Stepping On,” a sevenweek program featuring Nelida Zoeller, Falls Prevention Coordinator for the Suffolk County
Department of Health, to help to older adults who are at risk for falling. The “Stepping On” program empowers older adults to carry out behaviors that reduce the risk of falls, improve self management and increase quality of life. Through the program, older adults develop specific knowledge and skills to prevent falls in community settings. Older adults should consider attending if they a) are at risk of falling; b) have a
fear of falling, or c) have fallen one or more times. The highly-participative course will meet on Wednesdays, beginning on September 17th through October 29th. Class time is 10 a.m. to 12 noon. The course is FREE, but preregistration is required by September 10 to attend. Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and his Town Board colleagues announce that the Town will again impose measures aimed at ensuring that boaters wanting to attend the Huntington Lighthouse’s annual Music Fest August 30 can enjoy the event and leave safely. The Town will again impose a 5 mph speed limit within half a mile of the Lighthouse and establish a safety zone around the Lighthouse to keep vessels clear of the dock and rocks and to protect swimmers in the vicinity of the Lighthouse. The speed limit will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Huntington Town harbormaster, working with the Suffolk County Police Department, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Lloyd Harbor Village harbormaster, will step up patrols in the area of the festival, which last year attracted an estimated 1,200 boats and could attract an estimated 1,400 this year. The Town will have rapid rescue recovery units available, if necessary, and work in coordination with local fire departments on rescues. As has been done in the past, law enforcement boats will be strategically located throughout the area to help ensure an orderly dispersal after the event and to optimize the response time for boats in need of assistance. Among the agencies that have committed resources
to assist in enforcement and rescue operations are the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Eatons Neck, the Suffolk County and Northport Village Police Departments, the Lloyd Harbor Village harbormaster and the Centerport, Cold Spring Harbor, Halesite, Huntington and Northport Fire Departments and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. This is the third consecutive year the Town has set the reduced speed limit for the area around the Lighthouse during the Music Fest, a move that was originally prompted by a tragedy in Oyster Bay on July 4th, 2012, that took the lives of three children who drowned when the boat in which they were watching a fireworks display capsized. After that tragedy, Huntington enacted legislation authorizing the Harbormaster’s Office to establish 5 mph zones during aquatic events and increased boating safety classes and other boating safety measures. Most recently, the Town placed two buoys carrying the warning, “Slow No Wake” in the area around the lighthouse. “Whether it is Fourth of July fireworks or Labor Day Weekend music festivals, the Town takes boating safety very seriously, and our experience is that these enhanced measures help send the message that we expect boaters to act responsibly, for their own sake and others’,”
Supervisor Petrone said. “We want boaters to enjoy the festivities and get home safely, so they can come again next year.” “The Town has devoted resources to increasing boater education and to enforcement,” Councilman Mark Cuthbertson said. “Our hope is that boaters get the message that it is important to remember that courtesy, respect for others and common sense are not things they leave at the shore.” “As we have worked with Pam Setchell and the Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society on the preparations that will once again make the Music Fest a signature Huntington event, safety has been a key component,” Councilwoman Susan A. Berland said. “Boaters need to be aware of the new “slow no wake” buoys and pay attention to their message, to ensure a safe boating event for everyone.” “Just as cars can be weapons on land, so can boats on the water,” Councilwoman Tracey A. Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, and its Starting Early Program were the beneficiaries of some much needed help from a group of 10 volunteers courtesy of Goldman Sachs. On July 11th, volunteers spent the day greatly improving the aesthetics and creating an attractive gateway into the new “Busy Town” playground. Rob Martin, a Goldman Sachs employee and parent of a child enrolled in the Starting Early Program, helped organize the beautification program as a “Community Team Works
Project.” “Our group from Goldman Sachs was delighted to assist in this effort on behalf of DDI,” commented Martin. “It was the source of tremendous fulfillment for each of us when we saw the finished product and more importantly, the students playing in this beautiful environment.” The work was completed at DDI’s Little Plains campus, which serves approximately 300 children with autism and other developmental disabilities. From infant to fiveyears old, DDI’s Starting Early Program provides superior educational and therapeutic services for children who present with
developmental delays. DDI graduates over 92% to their home school district kindergarten programs. Goldman Sachs volunteers spent the day planting shrubs and flowers to enhance the look of the new playground. Students entertained the volunteers by singing some graduation songs to show their appreciation. “The staff and students are so thankful for all the hard work that the Goldman Sachs volunteers did to make “Busy Town” a delightful and colorful place to play and enjoy,” commented Michelle Lawrence, Education Behavior Specialist for DDI.

Remember, you’re allowed to take breaks from studying in order to recharge. 9. We like to move it, move it. Cue the dance music, lace up those running shoes or grab a Frisbee. No matter how you like to move it (move it!), maintaining weight is about burning the same amount of calories as you consume. Developing a regular exercise routine
(at least 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week) is the best way to burn additional calories and manage stress. 10. Take your phone out. No, not to tweet. To check your portions. One of the easiest pitfalls for college students is all-youcan- eat cafeterias. Portion control can help you keep track of the foods you are consuming without going overboard. For instance, a serving of chicken breast (3 ounces) is about the size of a smart phone and a medium banana is about the size of a pencil. On August 3rd, in Central Park, the New York City Triathlon saw New York’s finest athletes swim, run and cycle to glory through New York City. This year, the roster included four of our city’s most dedicated athletes who made up Team LICADD. Together they raised over $11,000.00 for the council’s lifesaving work here on Long Island. Ed Kerner, Lee Goddard, Jeffrey Crane and Mary Alice O’Connor, in her first ever NYC Triathlon, participated in this year’s event for LICADD and brought spirit and heart into this annual New York tradition for Team LICADD. The participants dove into the Hudson River at 5 a.m. and brought in record times for this leg of the
event. The 1500 kilometer swim in the Hudson brought in times of 18 and 19 minutes for the team, they then jumped onto their bicycles and cycled 40 kilometers down the West Side Highway. The last part of this event was a 10K run in Central Park, again with stellar times. “This is my second New York City Triathlon this year, it meant even more to me to do this event. We all see and feel the crisis here in every part of New York. By competing in the NYC Triathlon I am able to “Pay It Forward,” said Ed Kerner. “When my wife and I moved back into the city a few years ago, I got involved with this event and I look forward to doing it again next year for Team LICADD. To me, nothing
is more important than the work this organization does on Long Island and I was proud to be involved.” For over 58 years, LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. LICADD offers crisis intervention, screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and several family education workshops to help Long Islanders struggling with the effects of addiction. The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce that local artist Pat Feiler was this year’s winner of the “Thomas Currie-Bell Memorial Purchase Prize” in the North Fork Annual juried art exhibition held at the Southold Historical Society’s Reichert Family Center. Feiler’s work, entitled “S. BRIGHTENING THE DAY - Pictured are Mr. Wheeler and Mr. d’Arnaud visiting S. Rendezvous and Race,” with Amire Peterson, his sister Sofia and dad, Jason.

The painting depicts several vessels, including the S.S. 76, whose local owner recently remarked “I consider the painting outstanding and Patricia an exceptional artist.” Patricia Feiler lives in Mattituck, New York. Her eclectic paintings reflect her fascination with the luminous colors of Long
