“Know The Difference” Asthma Education Campaign Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills), Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Department of Health Services Commissioner Dr.
Gregson Pigott, members of the Legislature and representatives from local public health organizations launched the “Know the Difference” Asthma Education Campaign
after resolutions creating the campaign passed the Legislature and were signed into law. The new law requires all stores that contain a pharmacy in Suffolk County to post the “Know
the Difference” poster, which provides patients with vital information regarding the proper use of asthma medications. The poster, developed in conjunction with the Asthma Coalition of Long Island, the Allergy & Asthma Network, the New York State Children’s Environmental Health Centers, the Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services displays examples of “rescue” and controller medications. The poster will be available to consumers in English, Spanish and HaitianCreole, the three most widely spoken languages in Suffolk County. There are several types of asthma inhalers that are available to consumers. When they are used incorrectly or are accidentally interchanged, poor outcomes may result which include avoidable hospitalization or death. Approximately 50% of adults and 40% of children with asthma do not have control of their asthma and utilizing appropriate medication can significantly improve their condition.

St. Jude Walk/Run On Long Island Transforms To Virtual Event Event To Benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
In celebration of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, supporters of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® from across the country, including the Long Island community, will be participating in the virtual St. Jude Walk/Run September 26th. This year participants can walk, run and fundraise at their own pace and distance in their own neighborhoods. In addition, the St. Jude Walk/Run mobile app,
is available in the Apple app store and on Google Play, to provide a unique experience to participants that includes a virtual tour of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and some engagement opportunities using augmented reality. Sacks for Soldiers College campuses are diverse. Newly minted high school graduates embarking on the next stage of their studies might dominate college campuses, but many established professionals who have long since graduated from high school are also among the student bodies at universities across the globe. The National Center for Education Statistics says that one in five Americans enrolled in undergraduate higher education is at least 30 years old. The changing face of higher education should be a comfort to adults who may have been apprehensive about heading back to school. Adults considering a return to school should not allow age to deter them from enrolling. Many people now complete degrees later in life, while others return to school to study subjects they did not study during their first go-rounds as college students. Finding the right fit in regard to a college
is different for adults than it is students right out of high school. Responsibilities to family and employers complicate the decision about where to go to school. The following tips can help adults as they decide where to continue their educations. • Choose a school that meets your needs. Look for schools that can accommodate priorities other than academics, such as family and work. Many schools now offer flexible schedules and online classes. Check out schools with strong reputations for working with adult learners. • Sit down with a college counselor. If you’ve been in college before, pull your transcripts and bring any information about coursework, credits and life experience. This way you can be credited for what you have already accomplished. Counselors can serve as invaluable resources as you navigate a return to the classroom. • Brush up on the skills required of successful students. If you’ve been out of school for awhile,
brush up on your study skills, note-taking, annotating, and other skills that can serve you well in an academic environment. • Speak with your employer. Many employers support employees who want to return to school, especially when employees will be gaining skills that are applicable to their existing careers. Some employees may even help their employers finance their educations. According to Matthew Reed, the vice president for learning at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, N.J., roughly 90 percent of midsize or large employers offer some kind of tuition reimbursement. Even when that’s not available, some employers may have an arrangement with certain schools that provide discounts to their workers, says Reed. Adults returning to school is becoming increasingly common. Planning and making use of resources at your disposal can help you navigate the process of returning to school as an adult.
Rising juniors at Chaminade High School Matthew and Thomas Stueber have always been thinking about what their plans are after high school. When they were eight, the boys had the opportunity to attend a football game and tour the campus at West Point. This visit led Matt to setting the dream of attending a military academy and serving his country. Through the years Matthew and Thomas have always sent items the soldiers were in need of to different
charity organizations. After speaking with an Army Ranger after a recent deployment Matt realized what the soldiers really miss are those comfort items that we all take for granted, from there the idea of Sacks for Soldiers took hold. The goal is to send comfort items, mixed in with necessities, directly to the soldiers who are deployed. The Sacks for Soldiers website is: https:// sites.google.com/view/ sacks-for-soldiers/home. Support has come from the Chamiade Football Family
and thanks to support from the Massapequa Kiwanis Club all shipping costs up to $2,000 are covered so in addition to all items donated, all money contributed goes directly to purchasing items sent to the soldiers. So far Sacks for Soldiers has sent 3 packages, the goal is to make this a sustainable project and send at least one package a month. Tips For Effective Remote Learning
An increased reliance on virtual home instruction has many students rethinking their organizational strategies and daily school schedules. Learning at home is different from being in a traditional classroom environment, but with some effective strategies, students can persevere without missing a beat. • Stick To A Schedule. Many students are successful because they follow a schedule. The Center for Social and Emotional Foundations of Early Learning says that routines and schedules are important because they influence a child’s emotional and cognitive development. Children feel secure with schedules, which may help them recognize what’s expected of them. When learning at home, students should strive to maintain as consistent a schedule as possible, including bedtimes, wake times, hours devoted to learning, and time to get outside or engage in downtime activities. • Connect Live If Possible. There are many free tools
and resources available that enable teachers to provide live video lessons or to record them so students can watch them later. Similarly, social networking apps and virtual meeting programs enable students to connect digitally. This can be helpful for collaborative learning assignments or just to see a familiar face. • Stick To Tools That Work. Once students find apps or systems that work, they should stick with them, offers Khan Academy, an educational tutoring resource. There are many factors outside of one’s control during virtual instruction, but maintaining consistency with tools and schedules is one way to feel more confident and secure. • Check Student Accounts Frequently. Just like students, teachers may be learning as they go in regard to remote learning strategies. Students should be sure to check school email accounts or other places where teachers post assignments a few times per day so that they stay on top of all assignments
and are aware of due dates. • Reach Out To Instructors. Allegheny College suggests students contact their teachers if they are unsure of how to participate in remote learning environments. Ask questions about assignments, get clarification on key topics and be sure to tune into any remote chats or virtual “office hours.” • Stay In Touch With Guidance, If Needed. Remote learning is a new experience for many students, and there may be certain struggles or road blocks. It can be easy to grow frustrated with equipment failures or lack of in-person interaction. Schools employ qualified therapists and guidance counselors who are just a click, call or email away if issues need to be talked through. Students should utilize all resources made available to them. Virtual home instruction can be made even easier with some extra assistance and guidance.

Help Feed Sweetbriar’s Resident Animals!!! ANIMAL FOOD DRIVE Sweetbriar Nature Center Animal Food Drive is ongoing!!! The facility is in need of donations of fruits and vegetables for the many animals rehabilitating in their care. Most needed items are unsalted nuts and nonperishables, baby food, Cheerios, tuna in water, oat bran and shelled nuts. In addition, Sweetbriar has an Amazon Smile account set up (link on their website https://www. sweetbriarnc.org/) with a wish list of items most
needed. Please drop off supplies on the porch of the Sweetbriar Nature Center at 62 Eckernkamp Drive, Smithtown. The main house and indoor areas remain closed for the time being. Sweetbriar Nature Center, has served the community for 50 years, has been severely affected by the pandemic. Unfortunately, they have not been able to run many of their programs that typically fund the
needs of the animals. They hope to band together as a community to assist this town treasure in their time of need. During these tough times, it is very important we continue to help others and support local charities where we can. Enjoy this past article about a wonderful nonprofit, The Book Fairies.

5 Smart Ways to Prep for Back-to-School Without the Stress (StatePoint) Whether the new school year means your kids will be heading back to the classroom, learning remotely, or a mix of both, back-to-school will most likely be stressful. Thinking ahead can help prepare everyone for a new way of learning, and simplify the transition from the slow ease of summertime to the bustle of the school year. Follow these tips so that everyone is ready when the first bell rings. 1. Resume the Routine. Summertime schedules are often lax, but a more structured routine is important during the school year. At least a week before classes start, reestablish set bedtimes and mealtimes to ease everyone back into school year habits. Even if children are remote-learning this fall, keep first day of school traditions alive with their favorite breakfast, pictures and a first day of school outfit. 2. Simplify Shopping. Create a checklist of items you’ll need to buy, as well as plan out where you’ll make purchases. PSEG Long Island is expanding its claims policy due to the COVID-19 pandemic so that customers whose electrical service was interrupted by Tropical Storm Isaias for at least 72 hours can be reimbursed for spoiled food and medication. The tropical storm knocked out power for more than 420,000 customers on Long Island and in the Rockaways, making it the
most destructive storm since Superstorm Sandy. “We recognize that losing power in August, together with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, was a hardship for many of our customers,” PSEG Long Island President and COO Daniel Eichhorn said. “Given the unique combination of circumstances, we believe the right thing to do is to expand our claims process
to ease the burden on the customers most impacted by Tropical Storm Isaias.” PSEG Long Island will reimburse residential customers up to $250 and commercial customers up to $5,000 for food spoilage if their service was interrupted for 72 hours or longer between Aug. 4, and Aug. 12, 2020 because of Tropical Storm Isaias. For residential customers,
food spoilage claims of $150 or less must include an itemized list. Food spoilage claims over $150 must include an itemized list and proof of loss (for example: cash register tapes, store or credit card receipts, canceled checks or photographs of spoiled items). Separately, customers will be reimbursed for losses, up to a maximum of $300, for prescription medications
that spoiled due to lack of refrigeration. Customers must provide an itemized list of the medications and proof of loss (for example: pharmacy prescription label or pharmacy receipt identifying the medicine). Commercial customers applying for reimbursement must supply an itemized list of spoiled food and proof of loss (invoices, inventory lists, bank statements).
