Boy Scout Clean-Up
O
n a warm Saturday morning, Legislator Leslie Kennedy met with five local Boy Scout troops in Smithtown to clean a tributary stream that leads to the Nissequogue River. The Boy Scouts, who hailed from Troops 3, 539, 888, 214, 349, worked tirelessly in order to accomplish this task alongside the Leslie as part of a broader effort to bring long-term, meaningful relief to groundwater flooding conditions in the area.

Buddy the Birthday Boy By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m baaaaack! The human is busy putting the finishing touches on Seasons™ Magazine this week, so she asked me to fill in yet again. From what I’ve heard, readers absolutely loved my last column and have been writing in regularly to check on my wellbeing. Thanks for the love, and all the “half-birthday” wishes. So how does it feel to celebrate six months in the bowl, you ask? Not too shabby. I received my very first birthday present in the form of a gift card to Pet Smart, and the human says I can pick out anything I want. I’ll have to give it some thought. I hear they
have even bigger plants than the one I currently reside with, or maybe a castle… or a seashell to sleep in… the possibilities are endless. My one gripe is that, after weeks of this birthday talk, there was no cake – not even a cupcake, a cookie, a crumb… nothing. I thought I was finally going to sample a morsel when the human’s “Mommy” came over and tempted me with a Flying Saucer ice cream sandwich. How yummy those chocolate crumbs looked. But, alas, the rogue flake was snatched from my waiting jaws. What a tease. That aside, the day was very enjoyable, with much
singing and celebrating in honor of me and all my finned glory. And well it should have been. I am, after all, the most lively addition to that drab little apartment, if I do say so myself. I even complement the throw pillows and accents. I am, to put it quite simply, the finest accessory in the place. I suppose I should also note that my milestone was shared by the human – something about turning 33 I think. That seems like an awfully big number. Maybe that’s why she’s so tall. Such are some of the thoughts I ponder as I swim my daily 437 laps around the bowl… ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, signing off.

Cleaning the Stream
On a warm Saturday morning Legislator Leslie Kennedy met with five local Boy Scout troops in Smithtown to clean a tributary stream that leads to the Nissequoge River. The Boy Scouts, who hailed from Troops 3, 539, 888, 214, 349, worked tirelessly this Saturday in order to accomplish this task alongside the Leslie as part of a broader effort on the part of Legislator Kennedy to bring long term, meaningful relief to groundwater flooding conditions in the area. The troops met at the corner of Forest Lane and Tanglewood Drive, and they embarked on their cleaning mission from there. The stream which feeds one of Long Island’s largest lakes, runs between residential properties in Smiththown. The issue
arises when the stream becomes polluted with debris and stops the flow of water, when this occurs residents experience flooding in their yards and houses which can lead to property damage. The stream was muddy and covered in heavy brush, but the Scouts were able to clear away the brush with tools loaned from the Department of Public Works, and they were able to clean out anything from the stream that was man made and ensure that the stream would flow properly. The Scouts had to be environmentally sensitive to the area and not disrupt the integrity of the stream bed while still cleaning it of all foreign debris. Master Jung Hwa Lee, the founder of the Open Path Art Gallery on Main St. did not imagine her life as an artist. The 43 year-old owner of the Body and Brain Institute has dedicated her life to teaching yoga, meditation and other healing practices to her students. But eight months ago when her storefront needed a new look, she was inspired by an ancient Korean art exhibit in Philadelphia. “The paintings there brought tears to my eyes,” Master Lee said. And though she had never been more than a doodler, she decided she had nothing to lose by painting a serene mural to express her lifelong belief in the power of natural beauty. She never imagined it would open her creative senses
and inspire her to paint on canvas. Today she is proud to announce the opening of her own gallery, which showcases the exquisite artwork of herself and coowner Laurie Fitrakis. Proclamation Presented Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta presented a proclamation to the Marmorato family, who own and operate Art Stone & Memorial in Kings Park, in recognition of their donation of time and workmanship on the monument of Navy Seal Lt. Michael P. Murphy and the 18 soldiers who were killed on June 28th, 2015 in a
firefight in Afghanistan. It is located at MacArthur Airport in Islip. The Ronkonkoma Rotary donated the granite and Art Stone & Memorial did the engraving which includes a portrait of Lt. Michael P. Murphy on the center panel. Those who died with him have their portrait, name, hometown, rank and affiliation etched on
the side panels. An account of what happened that day is also inscribed for people to read. Also etched on the monument are the names of all the dedicated men and women from Suffolk and Nassau counties who have lost their lives during the war on terror.

Victoria Bonavita, age 11, recently traveled to the historic Saratoga Racetrack in upstate NY for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interview 93 year old Penny Chenery, the owner of the Triple Crown winner and the world’s most amazing horse - Secretariat. Ms. Chenery was the subject of the popular Disney movie “Secretariat” that beautifully tells the story of her life with her amazing horse. Secretariat won the 1973 Triple Crown by an incredible 31 lengths with a world record time that has never been approached to this day. The interview took place at the historic Saratoga Racetrack on the day of the Whitney. After the interview, Victoria shared with Ms. Chenery a portrait of Secretariat that her Great Grandfather Joe Bonavita painted nearly 40 years ago. Ms. Chenery later honored the painting by adding her signature to it.

Eagle Court Recognition
A special ceremony to elevate a Boy Scout to the rank of Eagle Scout was held on August 9th at the Beach Club Estate in Lake Ronkonkoma for Jesse C. Prato of Troop 3 (Smithtown). In order to advance to the highest rank in Boy Scouts, a youth must earn 22 Merit Badges (include 11 that are required) and provide leadership in planning and implementing a community service project. While only 22 Merit Badges are needed to attain the rank of Eagle Scout, Eagle Scout Prato earned a total of 39 Merit Badges demonstrating Scouting skills as well as civic awareness and vocational interests that may become lifelong hobbies. For his Eagle project, Jesse planned, developed, and supervised the construction of six cage animal wall units to house rescue cats and dogs for
Save-A-Pet animal shelter in Port Jefferson. Jesse being a volunteer at the shelter for the past 5 years, and his love for animals made it an easy decision for him to select Save-APet for his Eagle project. Jesse began his scouting journey to Eagle as a Cub Scout with Pack 3333. In March of 2007 he joined Troop 3 after earning his Arrow of Light as a Webelo Scout. As a member of Troop 3, Jesse assumed various positions of responsibility including: Patrol Leader, Scribe, and Quartermaster. Jesse continues to be active in the Troop working with the younger Scouts and recently participated in Legislator Leslie Kennedy’s Clean the Stream community service project. At Jesse’s Eagle Court of Honor special presentations were made by Assemblyman Michael
J, Fitzpatrick, Suffolk County Comptroller John M. Kennedy Jr., Legislator Leslie Kennedy, Jeff Ehrharadt, Aide to Congressman Lee Zeldin, Carol Nucci, Aide to Senator John Flanagan, and Liz Jumper, Executive Director Suffolk County Council Matinecock District. Jesse also received a special proclamation from Suffolk County Clerk Judith A. Pascale declaring August 9th, 2015 Jesse Carmine Prato Day and an American flag which was flown over the Capitol June 23rd from Congressman Lee Zeldin. Jesse attended St. John the Baptist High School and was very involved in the campus ministry, environmental club and computer club. He received a scholarship to LIU Post in Brookville, where he is majoring in Criminal Justice.
Historic Porch Restored In April 2015 the Smithtown Historical Society began groundwork on an exciting buildings & grounds project made possible by a generous anonymous donor. After receiving some much need preservation work, the Judge John Lawrence Smith Homestead was ready for the restoration of its front porch. Once a beautiful gathering spot for the family, this architectural feature was lost over time as the structure underwent multiple renovations. Under the guidance of Mancini Architecture and the craftsmanship of Schoolhouse Remodeling, the physical reconstruction is complete and the house is back to its original glory! “To have this porch be completed, to have this building be completed, is such an achievement
for the Smithtown Historical Society. With this new structure we are now able to tell another chapter of the story of the families that lived here,” said Executive Director Marianne Howard. “We are very grateful to our anonymous donor, Mancini Architecture and to School House Remodeling for helping to make this dream a reality.” A ribbon cutting ceremony announcing the official opening of the porch was the centerpiece of the Smithtown Historical Society’s annual community summer barbecue. More than 100 community members gathered around the porch to celebrate its completion and to enjoy an all you can eat barbecue catered by Panico’s Community Market. Refreshing Italian ices were also served
thanks to the generosity of Uncle Louie G’s of Smithtown. The barbecue was made possible through the sponsorship of Mancini Architecture, Neal and Janice Richman, People’s United Bank, School House Remodeling, Uncle Louie G’s of Smithtown, Dot and Peter Micciche, Carolyn and Jim Borella, and Fairway Market. The barbecue was just the beginning! The porch will allow the historical society to use the historic house in many new ways for educational and social programming. Currently the society is working on developing special events to showcase the building’s recent addition. Ms. Howard is confident that the new porch will serve the community well, “It will be such an asset to us and the community for generations to come.”

On Thursday, the office of Suffolk County Legislator Leslie Kennedy awarded an official Proclamation to recognize Joan Travan for her exceptional contributions to the community of Suffolk. Joan Travan has been an active member of the Suffolk County Association of Municipal Employees for many years. For the last three years she has served as one of the association’s Vice Presidents; she also has been serving the Union as the Medicaid Unit
President for the past seven years. Her dedication does not stop there; she has also been a dedicated member and President of both the Medford Civic Association and Medford Parent Teacher Association. After nearly 25 years of public service to the community of Suffolk County, Joan Travan has decided to retire, she was promptly congratulated and honored by both Leslie and John Kennedy for her lifetime of hard work and achievements.

Crisis Counselor Training Everyone has moments when the support and understanding of others seem hard to find, and it is for such moments that RESPONSE of Suffolk County, Inc. was born. RESPONSE of Suffolk County is a nationally accredited, non-profit agency that provides a confidential and anonymous hotline for anyone who needs to talk. RESPONSE is seeking volunteer crisis counselors and will offer a free training program to those interested in becoming the caring voice on the other end of the line. Part one of the training program will be held on Saturday, September 26th and Sunday, September 27th, and continues on Saturday, October 3rd and Sunday October 4th. Sessions will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day and trainees must attend all four sessions. Training will take place on the campus of Stony Brook University.
No experience is necessary, only a sincere willingness to learn and grow, and the ability to make a six-month commitment of four hours a week is required. Response provides two types of telephone assistance lines and both are heavily dependent on volunteer talent. The crisis intervention hotline takes over 18,000 calls each year about a wide range of subjects – substance abuse, domestic violence, depression, family conflict, grief, suicidal thoughts among many others. The support line provides over 4,000 telephone “visits” yearly to individuals who are homebound or have limited social support due to a physical disability or mental illness. Training for both the hotline and support line counselors includes lecture, roleplaying exercises, and private and group supervision. College credit is available and bilingual volunteers are especially
