New York Blood Center has joined blood donor organizations across 21 countries with the Missing Type campaign to highlight an almost 30% international drop in new blood donors compared to a decade ago. Every second, three people across the world receive a life changing blood transfusion, thanks to selﬂess donors who answer the call to donate. Participating blood services reported the number of people becoming donors and giving blood for the first time decreased by 27.6% since 2005. In the United States, there is a particular need for new donors with O negative

blood, the universal blood type, and donors of minority backgrounds such as Latino/Hispanic and African American community members. the global “Missing Type” campaign, A’s, B’s, and O’s, the letters of the main blood groups, will disappear in everyday and iconic locations in New York City with the help and support of organizations and local businesses. The Missing Type letters will also be disappearing from famous locations in Australia, America, Japan, Ireland, England, and many more countries. Celebrities supporting the campaign include actress Jamie Lee Curtis and rapper LL Cool J. NYBC and Lauren Shields, a sixteen-yearold blood recipient who needed life-saving blood transfusions during her heart transplant in 2009, rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange in support of the Missing Type campaign last week on Tuesday, August 9th. Robert Purvis, Vice President of NYBC said, “New York Blood Center is very proud to be part of the international Missing Type campaign which has the power to raise awareness globally on the everyday

The campaign couldn’t happen at a better time, as August is such a high vacation month! You can start donating blood across the U.S. from age sixteen, with a parent’s written consent. O negative blood type, the universal donor that is most reached for in the E.R., is found more commonly within the Latino/Hispanic and African American populations. However, these populations are underrepresented in the donor pool, and with the increasing population rate, their communities are in need. “We need people to come out and support one another, by donating blood and your time, you are saving someone’s life, just like mine. Blood is needed for transfusions during organ transplants or when someone is undergoing chemotherapy. Without blood and people who donated I would not be here today,” said Shields.

Steps to Choosing the Right Pre-school Kindergarten used to mark a child’s ﬁrst foray into formal education, but pre-school has now taken up that mantle for many students.

Some parents may recall their own pre-school experiences, mostly remembering extended moments of play and more monitored fun inside the school. But as the world of education has become more competitive, and students are required to meet certain standards at even earlier grade levels than before, pre-school has undergone its own transformation. Academic pre-schools have become a popular choice for parents hoping their children can gain that extra edge. Rather than the play-based philosophy pre-schools adhered to in the past, academic pre-schools introduce students to the rigors of the classroom. These academic pre-schools often teach math and reading. Proponents of this type of learning say that children are sponges at early ages, and the more information they can be

Religious organizations frequently offer their own faith-based preschool programs. Parents will have to decide if they want a faith-based curriculum for their young children.

Are pre- and post-care services available? A school that has ﬂexible hours may be appealing to some. This enables parents to drop off and pick up children according to their own work schedules or in coordination with school hours for other children in the family. Visit the school and assess the

Extracurricular activities can benefit students in various ways. Academic clubs, sports and volunteer organizations provide students with opportunities to grow as people and make new friends while also teaching kids skills they will use for the rest of their lives. Many parents are aware that extracurricular activities can help students improve their chances of gaining admission to college. But students who choose the right extracurricular activities will benefit in greater ways than simply strengthening their college applications. The following are a handful of ways parents can help their sons and daughters choose extracurricular activities they can benefit from for years to come: Ask kids to jot down their interests.

Students are more likely to enjoy and excel at extracurricular activities that align with their existing interests. Ask kids to jot down a list of their interests or anything they might want to try. Youngsters might want to learn a musical instrument even if they have never before taken a course on music. Once kids have listed their interests, look for activities that allow them to further explore those interests. Chances are there is a schoolsponsored or community-based club or organization that will align with at least one thing on your child’s list. Encourage kids to have fun. Kids are more likely to enjoy and fully commit to an activity if they ﬁnd it fun. While extracurricular activities can help kids grow as people and improve their image in the eyes of college

admissions officers, kids will get even more out of an activity if they enjoy doing it. Look for something that won’t interfere with schoolwork. Extracurricular activities can look great on a college application, but that benefit is lost if the activity interferes with a student’s academic performance. Some activities, including sports, demand more of students’ time than others, but make sure kids know that school always comes first. Ask around. Ask neighbors or school officials for recommendations to help kids who have tried but failed to find the right fit with regard to extracurricular activities. Sometimes it takes a little trial and error before a child finds an activity he or she is comfortable with. Fellow parents can make great

resources, and school ofﬁcials likely know of a host of clubs and organizations that kids may be interested in. Sign up with your kids. If kids are hesitant to sign up for an activity because they are shy, sign up with them. Volunteer organizations are typically family-friendly, and kids might be more likely to come out of their shells if they sign up with their parents or siblings. As kids grow more comfortable with an activity, they will want to get more involved even if mom and dad don’t have the time. Parents can employ various strategies to help kids ﬁnd activities they can be passionate about for years to come.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $2,500 grant from PSEG for the Student Assistance Program (SAP). Funding will help to support the ongoing operation of LICADD’s SAP designed to educate young people about the potential health consequences associated with substance abuse in an age appropriate manner. The TGFD prevention program helps children build core social competencies, refusal skills and protective factors relating to tobacco and other drug use during their critical formative educational years. Teen Intervene, a psychoeducation intervention model, addresses teens experiencing mild to moderate problems associated with alcohol or other drug use.

Petrone and Councilman Mark Cuthbertson joined with campers attending the Town’s Project Play Camp in thanking the Suffolk County Police Department’s Hispanic Society for funding a day of special activities, including a bounce house and a disc jockey, on the last day of camp August 12th. Each year for the past few

years, the Hispanic Society had donated money to help fund a field trip for the campers to a Farmingdale video arcade emporium that has since closed. This year, the funding went to pay for the fun-filled day of the activities at the camp site, the Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School. Over two dozen children who were once afraid of the water and lacked basic safety skills are now swimming thanks to free 1-on-1 swim lessons offered by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island (BBBSLI) who teamed up with the Levittown Swim Association (LSA) to provide swim lessons this summer. The Power of Positivity I have often admired those who have the ability to see the good in every situation, those seemingly mystical individuals who appear to glide through life surrounded by an aura of peace and contentment, no matter what obstacles may be thrown their way. How it is that such an approach comes so naturally for some, yet is a constant struggle for others? Certainly, we all come from different circumstances, are faced with varying situations in our everyday lives – but, at our core, we are all made up of the same basic components. How we choose to deal with life’s variables is what makes us each unique. Do we meet them head on, or do we shy away? Is our tendency to be confrontational, or passive? Are we cynical or receptive to new ideas and methodologies?

Personally, I would brand myself a mixture of these facets, somewhat cynical, but yet still idealistic enough to remain hopeful that things will get better, over time, somehow. A positive mentality goes a long way, that is undeniable; and being open to possibilities will always seem like the better approach to putting up walls and allowing yourself to become consumed by the negativity surrounding you. Of course, sometimes we need a little help to implement these ideologies, and for that, I have sought out the practice of yoga over the last several years. Initially intended as a way to fill the void left by my “retirement” from 20 years of dancing, it has served as far more of a peaceful retreat from the world, an avenue to truly relax and decompress. Sure, it has its physical benefits as well, but the mental state it helps you to achieve is truly priceless.

The key, naturally, is to take this practice and apply it to those many hours spent outside the yoga studio, to transfer it into the “real” world beyond the self-made sanctuary. This can be found anywhere really, from a few hours soaking in the rays of the sun poolside, to walking along the shoreline with the ocean’s waves caressing your toes, to sitting on the edge of a dock taking in the last golden glow of sunset. You need only to remain open-minded, to see the beauty of each day, and to channel that positivity into a productive mentality. Easier said than done? Sure. But it can be done. It has been, by those who have chosen to cast aside the negative. My goal in this, my 34th year, is to embody the same characteristics those I admire do. And why not. Here’s to a new year…my new year. Plenty to smile about.

This past Friday, Legislator Leslie Kennedy attended a presentation for New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s Smart Seniors Program, a state-wide effort to make retirees more aware of scams being perpetrated against them and how they can protect themselves. The event took place at the Smithtown Senior Center. Timothy Hatter from the Attorney General’s Office headlined with an informative presentation, describing the most common types of scams being perpetrated against retirees and dispensing valuable resources for protection as well as assistance for those who have been victims of fraud. The event went further to make retirees aware of what is available for them as well as their loved ones. Kathy Platt from the Suffolk County Department of Ageing

spoke about the programs and services provided and how retirees can attain them. Explaining things like ways retirees could get assistance with grocery shopping and light cleaning in their homes, Ms. Platt made it easy for people to remember her phone number by passing out nail files with the department’s contact information printed on them. Rounding out the event, Officer Bryan Stoothoff from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office presented the lightweight transmitter which serves as the heart of the department’s Lifesaver Program, an initiative meant to quickly locate individuals with cognitive impairments who have wandered off. “I appreciate Legislator Kennedy’s efforts to continually bring awareness to vital programs and services, like

Project Lifesaver, that help improve the quality of life for our residents and their caregivers,” said Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco after the event. All three presenters were met with curiosity and enthusiasm, which left Legislator Kennedy thrilled. “I am so grateful to all the participants for making this presentation so successful. I know everyone’s objective is to keep our community’s retirees safe and independent. Ranked Among the Best Hauppauge School District is pleased to announce that Newsweek magazine ranked Hauppauge High School among America’s top public high schools. The America’s Top High Schools – 2016 list (http:// w w w. n e w s w e e k . c o m / high-schools/americastop-high-schools-2016) included a total of 59 schools from New York State – 12 of which made it into the top 100 in the rankings. The rankings show how well high schools prepare students for college. Newsweek reviewed six measurements and weighted them to achieve a “college readiness index.” The measurements and their weight are: • Holding power: 10 percent

• Ratio of counselor/ full-time equivalent to student enrollment: 10 percent • Weighted SAT/ACT: 17.5 percent • Weighted AP/IB/dual enrollment composite: 17.5 percent • Graduation rate: 20 percent • College enrollment rate: 25 percent In all, 6,477 of the nation’s 15,819 public high schools met the criteria to be considered in Newsweek’s rankings. The publication then used school performance data from the National Center for Education Statistics to narrow the list of schools. Of those 6,477 schools, 4,760 were considered for the overall rankings. “It is always exciting when

our District or one of our schools gets recognition, especially when it is on a national level. This is a testament to the efforts of our faculty, students, Board of Education and community,” stated Hauppauge Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dennis O’Hara. “Knowing the support we have from our Board of Education – combined with the leadership of our principals and department directors, as well as our students’ potential – I will not be surprised as we continue to improve in these rankings and those similar, in addition to all areas that are important to our students’ well-being and achievement.”

SUFFOLK COP HONORED - The East Northport Fire Department recently recognized Suffolk County Police Officer Christine Blauvelt for her dedicated service upon her retirement. Officer Blauvelt was an asset to the department and community for over 20 years proudly serving in the 206 sector car that patrols the East Northport area. The department presented Blauvelt with a plaque for her dedicated service and her valued friendship to the officers and members of the East Northport Fire Department.
