A valid food protection/ food safety certificate issued by an approved entity must be posted in public view in all food establishments regulated by the Department. The Food Manager’s Course mobile application was created with $70,000 in federal funding through a Cooperative Agreement with the United States Food and Drug Administration that encourages innovation by local, state and tribal regulatory agencies to continuously improve Food Protection Programs and conform to voluntary national standards. Students who successfully complete the course are issued a certificate that must be renewed every three years. Certificate holders who register for renewal within 90 days following expiration of their certificates are eligible for the two half-day renewal course. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the debut of a new mobile application tool that offers food service managers the convenience to undergo food safety training in Suffolk County. This new application will be offered by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services as a portable extension of its award-winning online Food Manager’s Course. Currently, the application is available free of charge on Google Play and will expand to the Apple Store beginning the week of August 21st. “This is an important tool in the county’s Food Protection Program that uses new technology to educate workers in the food service industry while preventing food borne illness,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “I commend our county workforce who was instrumental in the creation of this mobile application so that we can

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services also offers a free online Food Manager’s Course that satisfies the Food Manager certificate requirement for all food establishments while allowing an individual to take the class at their convenience. The course consists of 20 modules that address various food safety topics, with a short quiz that follows each module. Successfully answering the quiz questions allows an individual to advance to the next module. All modules must be completed within 45 days of registering for the course. After completing all modules, he or she will be prompted to sign up for a test date and can register here. Following completion of the online course, individuals who take an in-person exam will be charged $50. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), Long Island’s premier provider of substance abuse services and prevention education programs is pleased to announce the Father Peter Sweisgood Memorial Breakfast will be held on Sunday, October 29th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Radisson Hauppauge. The hotel is located at 110 Vanderbilt Motor Parkway in Hauppauge. In its 28th year, the Breakfast is named for the late Father Peter Sweisgood, a “fisher of men’ a champion of LICADD’s mission and a former Executive Director of the 61 year old agency. Fr. Sweisgood devoted his life to helping people who struggle with an alcohol or drug dependency. His infectious and personal charisma drew people close to hear his message of hope and recovery. These members of the Smithtown Fire Department will be recognized at a ceremony on August 12th at the 145th FASNY Convention in Syracuse where they will receive medals of valor for their heroics. “The actions of these brave volunteers from Smithtown are nothing short of heroic,” said FASNY President Ken Pienkowski. “Their teamwork, perseverance, determination, and selfless courage resulted in the rescue of three trapped individuals, and their performance is consistent with the very finest traditions of the fire service. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) today announced that members of the Smithtown Fire Department have collectively been named “Firefighter of the Year” for their daring rescue of three individuals from an earlymorning fire in August of 2016. The call began as an automatic alarm at 3:13 a.m. on Wednesday, August 24th, 2016, that soon developed into a fullyinvolved house fire. Six members of the Smithtown Fire Department – Timothy Duckham, Thomas Kriklava, Patrick Diecidue, Jennifer O’Brien, Joseph LaRocco, and John Hanse – placed themselves in extreme danger in order to rescue the occupants trapped inside. They successfully removed all three of the occupants from

Lorraine Deller, executive director of the Nassau-Suffolk School Boards Association, said that in their roles as board of education members and school superintendents they have become guardians of Long Island’s “high performing and highly regarded” public schools. Speakers included Roger Tilles, who serves as Long Island’s representative on the New York State Board of Regents, and New York State Commissioner of Education MaryEllen Elia. They provided updates on changes being made to education policy such as state assessments and teacher evaluations. Regent Tilles explained

that now more than ever teachers and administrators from local school districts are a part of these discussions. “We’re listening to you,” he said. Commissioner Elia spoke about the state Education Department’s plan to meet the requirements of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, commonly known as ESSA. More than 150 meetings have been held throughout the state with input received from administrators, teachers, parents and students. She also spoke about the need to provide all students in the state with access to higherlevel courses and career and technical programs, and said that a revised teacher evaluation system is in the works. Lots to Celebrate

The Borowski family had a lot to celebrate over the past month. In Mid-June, Amanda Borowski received three community service awards from the Hauppauge Educational Foundation, Hauppauge High School Parent Teacher Student Association and the Hauppauge Lion’s Club, for her contributions with Amanda’s Book Rescue and for giving back to the community. Amanda graduated on June 23rd at the Hauppauge High School Commencement Ceremony. She will be taking Professional Communications, with a focus on Creative Writing, Editing and Publishing, at Farmingdale State College in the Fall. Paul & Kathryn Borowski celebrated their 25th

Wedding Anniversary in July. They met in 1989 while working at Astoria Bank. They got married in 1992 at Kathryn’s church in Bellmore, and had their reception at Paul’s cousin’s catering house in Bergen County, NJ with a large family picnic the next day. They took their honeymoon cruise to Nassau, Bahamas and visited Key West, Florida. The Borowski family had two celebrations to mark these milestone occasions. In early July, they had a luau party at their house with over 75 guests of family and friends with fun filled memories. Father Antony Asir, Pastor of St. Thomas More Church of Hauppauge, renewed Paul and Kathryn’s wedding vows under a flowered arbor and Amanda

proudly cut her graduation cake. Two weeks later, they continued the celebration by taking a Princess Cruise and Land Tour to Alaska. Amanda served as ring bearer for the second time for Paul & Kathryn’s renewal of vows by the Captain, who later asked them to join them on the bridge for a tour. Kathryn’s brother and sister-in-law joined them on this amazing trip. A few of the adventures were taking a helicopter ride landing on a glacier, going sports fishing where Kathryn caught a salmon, going whale watching and visiting the snow dogs summer camp and having beautiful views of Mt. Denali and of the wildlife in Denali National Park. Congratulations to Paul, Kathryn and Amanda.

This evening, Legislator Leslie Kennedy and the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce introduced Completely Unchained, the premier Van Halen cover band. This familyfriendly show was graced with two openers - first to open up the show, Sophia DiStefano, a student at Smithtown

West High School, who sang the National Anthem stunningly. Next up, Ariana Glaser, Little Miss Nesconset, known for picking raffle tickets, sang God Bless the USA. After that, Completely Unchained rocked the gazebo with all the classic Van Halen hits, the Sammy Hagar years and David Lee Roth’s greatest solo hits. The crowd was enthusiastic to hear them play, as they relived the glory days of Van Halen, arguably the greatest Dutch-American

heavy metal band. “This was a spectacular upbeat show, as always I want to thank my two opening singers, Sophia DiStefano and Ariana Glaser, Little Miss Nesconset,” said Legislator Kennedy. “I also want to thank the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce for organizing this great series and Completelty Unchained for rocking in front of our whole community.”

The Hauppauge Fire Department recently recognized a special young man for his quick actions in saving the family home from fire. Daniel Diana, 22, is an extraordinary person who is an Honorary Member of Hauppauge FD Engine Company 3. Daniel comes down to the firehouse for Company events, in-house training and meetings. He loves everything about firefighting and being a part of the Hauppauge FD in any capacity possible. While Daniel’s grandparents were over for a visit, his mom was cooking bacon on a BBQ grille on the back porch.

The grease from the bacon caught fire and started a large fire with flames five-feet high that were impinging on a canopy over the porch. Daniel witnessed the flames and sprang into action. Daniel told his mom to close the lid on the BBQ and turn off the gas. The fire was still burning intensely as Daniel raced to the shed and grabbed two dry chemical extinguishers and put out the fire. Daniel remained calm and knew what needed to be done to stop the fire from spreading, with the knowledge he learned over the past four years at the firehouse.

Daniel has Autism and struggles with everyday life, but during this event he stepped up and took brave actions to protect his family and home. The Department held a ceremony in his honor where Daniel was congratulated for his heroic actions and presented with a Certificate of Merit and fire department jacket from Chief Robert Wind and officers, as his proud parents Scott and Dina Diana, and other family members, friends and firefighters attended. Golf Classic Set The Friends of Mercy Medical Center 36th Annual Golf Classic will be held on Thursday, September 14th, at the Garden City Country Club. The event will honor Donald H. Regan, a consultant in sales and portfolio risk. A Rockville Centre resident for over thirty years, Don endeavors to improve his community. While Don has displayed financial talent throughout his career he is even more dedicated to his philanthropic work. Don came to Mercy over 20 years ago spearheading

several projects including the Mercy Fund drive in the 1990’s. He is a devoted board member of the Friends of Mercy Medical Center and has worked with the Friends to provide millions in support for the medical center. Don has been on the Board of Swim Across America, Nassau Suffolk since 2001. His philanthropic work also includes supporting the De Lasalle School in Freeport, Habitat for Humanity and the Harlem Children’s Zone, as well as being on the educational advisory boards for Kent State’s

A Letter from the Commissioners Dear Editor, As commissioners of the St. James Fire District, we encourage all eligible residents to learn about our proposal for improving fire services in the St. James community. Residents will have the opportunity to vote on the proposal on Tuesday, September 19th, from 3 to 9 p.m. We have spent a great deal of time over the past several years discussing how to best meet the needs of the community in the most safe and efficient manner possible, while at the same time being mindful of the tax impact on residents. Our volunteers are facing real challenges due to facility limitations. The proposal seeks to address

three major concerns: the safety challenges posed by the configuration of the current firehouse on Jefferson Avenue; damage endured at the facility last August following a large-scale storm and subsequent flood; and the antiquated Route 25A/Lake Avenue facility constructed in 1922 that is out-of-date with current fire safety standards and procedures and is undersized for most of the fire district’s fire trucks and engines. We are not looking to build a luxurious firehouse, as other communities have. We are simply looking to provide our dedicated volunteers with the basic and modern resources they need to effectively do their job – a job that protects

and serves the residents of this community in their greatest times of need. The proposed plan calls for the consolidation of all fire services through the construction of a new facility on the existing Jefferson Avenue property. A new, centralized building will not only alleviate the safety concerns that currently exist, but will also allow the district to efficiently serve the community well into the future. The building would feature spaces that could be converted into accommodations for members and the community during storms or other major emergencies, and would also house a large meeting room for department

meetings and community use. It is important to note that regardless of the outcome of the vote on Sept. 19, the fire district is moving ahead with the sale of the firehouse at the Route 25A/Lake Avenue location to the St. James Fire Department (which originally owned the building prior to the district’s purchase of the property in 2013). While we certainly recognize the sentimental value that many in the community have for this building, the firehouse is antiquated, undersized and no longer best serves the fire district for the purpose of responding to calls in a quick, safe and efficient manner. In fact, only one

fire truck is currently housed at that property. Financially, it is no longer in the fire district’s best interest to use valuable taxpayer funds to maintain this outdated property. Please inform yourselves of the facts by visiting the fire district’s website at www.stjamesfd.org. We will also host a public hearing on the proposal on Tuesday, August 29th, at 7 p.m. at the Jefferson Avenue firehouse, as well as open houses on Saturday, September 9th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Thursday, September 14th, from 7 to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, September 17th, from 1 to 3 p.m., all at the Jefferson Avenue firehouse. Please remember to vote on September 19th.

Heart Walk Ambassador

The American Heart Association is proud to have Maddie Kellerman of Westbury, serving as the 2017 Long Island Heart Walk “Red Cape” Ambassador. This year’s Long Island Heart Walk will be taking place on Sunday, September 17th at Jones Beach. Seven-year-old Maddie was born with a congenital heart defect and has undergone several surgeries to fix her Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome. Today she is an active child and she looks forward to participating in the Long Island Heart Walk. At the Heart Walk, survivors are celebrated. A “Red Cap” is a red baseball cap featuring the American

Heart Association logo. “Red Caps” refer to survivors of heart attack, cardiac arrest or heart surgery who wear the red caps as a symbol of their survival while walking in the Heart Walk. “White Caps” will be distributed to stroke survivors the day of the walk. Pediatric cardiovascular disease survivors will receive red super hero capes to acknowledge their courage. As Red Cape Ambassador for the Long Island Heart Walk, Maddie will help create awareness about the importance of survivors participating in the event and to create awareness that heart disease and stroke aren’t “just an older man’s diseases.”

Choosing where to apply to college is a big decision that can affect the lives of young students for years to come. The college application process can have more immediate impacts as well, as U.S. News reported that the average college application fee was $41 in the spring of 2015, meaning families can expect to spend several hundred dollars just to apply to colleges. Financial aid might be available, and schools might look at more than just academic performance, particularly for students whose grades fall just short of last years’ average accepted applicants. Don’t be deterred by application fees. Stanford University’s application fee for 2017 was $90, making the school one of the

more expensive colleges or universities to apply to. But many schools, including Stanford, waive those fees for certain applicants. Students should not expect each school to waive their application fees, but they also should not let those fees deter them from applying, especially if they meet or exceed the application requirements. Choose the right safety school. Safety schools are those colleges or universities where

applicants’ academic credentials make them a near certainty to gain admission. But when choosing safety schools, students should pick schools that they would enjoy attending. Applying to a school simply because you can get in and not because you want to enroll there can make for an unpleasant college experience should you ultimately end up attending that college.

Tips for College Applicants or universities where a student’s academic credentials fall in the low end or below the school’s averages for students accepted the year prior. But even students who meet the academic requirements established by their dream schools may be hesitant to apply to such schools because of the cost of tuition. Of Sunrises & Stepping Stones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

I have always been a big believer in the concept of birthdays as beginnings, sort of personal new years, if you will, for each individual person. As such, my expectations of such days tend to aim for a level of unreasonable perfection, whether celebrating my own or that of a loved one; feeling that, somehow, this one day represents an omen of things to come over the next 364. This year, I decided to begin my day by driving to my favorite local sunrise spot, in the hope of catching one of those breathtakingly spectacular views first thing in the morning. All week, the weather looked to be beautiful, clear skies and sunshine all the way. Though it seemed exceptionally gray and gloomy as I headed south, I hoped the clouds would soon be accented by shooting rays of gold and pink.

Over 30 minutes later, as I aimlessly wandered the docks, attempting to capture “artsy” photographs of the still-muted surroundings, I wondered if this particular outing had been a colossal waste of time. Here I was, sleepily counting down to 6:03 a.m., when I could just as well have stayed under the covers at home. New beginnings, indeed. And then, just as I was about to cut my losses and head back to my pillow and blanket for the remainder of the morning, I heard a young boy who had been fishing at the other end of the dock with his father exclaim, “Dad, look at the sun! How cool is that?” Shifting my gaze over the horizon, I was shocked to see a huge red ball emerging out of the haze, nearly 10 minutes past “official” sunrise time. As I attempted to capture

the sight before me, I realized that pictures would never do it justice; and so, for once, I simply watched as the red turned to gold and the sun blanketed the bay with its shimmering rays. Too often do we become caught up in documenting a particular event, rarely allowing ourselves the time to take it all in, to truly become immersed in the experience. While one single day may not an entire year dictate, it can certainly set the tone in a symbolic manner; and on this, my 35th birthday, I was heartened to witness the gloom lift to reveal stunning beauty underneath. Patience is a virtue, as is appreciating the small moments, in the hope that they will lead to many more down the road. Here’s to day one being one small step in that direction.

School-aged kids who catch colds or the flu from their classmates can quickly spread those colds to their family members, who then might spread the colds further when they go to work. Preventing the spread of colds and flu at school is a team effort that requires the assistance of not just parents, but also teachers and students. Still, parents might be the first line of defense when it comes to preventing the spread of colds and the flu at school. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 38 million school days are lost to the flu each year. Those lost days can affect students who miss lesson plans, but also affect parents, who often must take days off from work to tend to their sick children. While there’s no way for parents to guarantee their children won’t catch a cold or the flu this school year, they can take various preventive measures to increase kids’

chances of staying healthy and achieving perfect attendance. Make sure kids are immunized and that their immunizations are current. Vaccinations bolster kids’ immune systems. That’s important, as kids’ immune systems are naturally less mature than adults’, making them more vulnerable to germs and viruses. The CDC recommends that adults and children receive their flu vaccinations in October while noting that such vaccinations can be administered as late as January and still prove effective. The CDC also recommends that adults and children receive flu vaccinations each year. Additional vaccinations may not need to be administered as often, but parents should still ensure kids’ are up-to-date with their shots. Make sure kids regularly wash their hands. Kids often catch colds by rubbing their hands that have been exposed to cold

virus germs on their noses or eyes. To prevent that, parents can teach kids to wash to their hands thoroughly, including scrubbing the backs of their hands, between their fingers and around their fingernails. Kids should know to wash their hands regularly, but especially after they use the bathroom and before they eat, drink or touch their mouths, noses or eyes. Keep kids home when they are sick. Parents don’t want their children to miss school, but kids who are suffering from colds or flu should be kept home. Balancing Extracurricular Activities Many high schools, colleges and universities emphasize their goals of producing well-rounded students. Extracurricular activities teach students important life lessons, provide them opportunities to socialize and often stimulate their minds and bodies in ways that differ from the stimulation provided in the classroom. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau states that, in 2014, 57 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 17 participate in at least one after-school

extracurricular activity. Children are more likely to participate in sports than clubs or lessons, such as music, dance and language, but each of these activities can be beneficial to students’ development. Students who participate in extracurricular activities may want to limit their participation to 20 hours per week. This is according to a group of professors from Stanford University and Villanova University who have been collecting data on the issue since 2007. In their report

“Extracurricular Activity in High-Performing School Contexts: Stress Buster, Booster or Buffer?”, Jerusha Conner and Sarah Miles found that 87 percent of kids who would be considered to have packed schedules were perfectly happy unless they were doing more than four hours a day. The “over-scheduling hypothesis” may be overhyped. This is the concern that too much organized activity participation leads to poor developmental

outcomes. This hypothesis also suggests that hectic schedules also undermine family functioning, detract from schoolwork and possibly increase the risk of copycat behaviors and excessive competitiveness. However, in the study “The Over-Scheduling Hypothesis Revisited: Intensity of Organized Activity Participation During Adolescence and Young Adult Outcomes,” researchers J.L. Mahoney and Andrea Vest determined that, controlling for demographic factors and

baseline adjustment, extracurricular intensity was a significant predictor of positive outcomes and unrelated to indicators of problematic adjustment (e.g., psychological distress, substance use, antisocial behavior) at young adulthood. Even though extracurricular activities are largely positive - even when schedules are packed - parents need to be aware of the diminishing returns of too many activities. This is something called the “threshold effect.” Benefits

from extracurriculars can level off when too many activities are being juggled. If a child is experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness or depression, or seems overly stressed, it could be time to reduce students’ time spent doing structured activities. It’s essential that families use the cues given by kids to assess what students can handle. And children should be encouraged to be honest with their parents about their extracurricular activities as well.
