approach to challenge the County’s youth to take initiative, become more civically engaged in their communities and begin a journey of personal growth. Students dedicate themselves to completing requirements in two, three or all four categories for Bronze, Silver or Gold recognition, respectively. Each category can require up to 100 or more hours of activity that must be logged and certified. In addition, students complete personal interviews in the Legislator’s office at the onset of the program and then at the completion. The program is open to all Suffolk County Youths between the ages of 13 and 18. Walt Whitman High School in the South Huntington School District had the most award recipients in the program with ten: Armany Alfaro (Gold), Nicolas Allain (Gold), Pamela Carey (Bronze), Samantha Carey (Bronze), Sindy Alvarez Garay (Gold), Ethan Halle (Gold), Oscar Armando Hernandez (Gold), Alyssa Katwala (Silver), Priya Katwala (Gold) and Katherine

Miata (Gold). Other local youths who earned DYAs were: Ashley Beck (Gold) and Oyin Olukoya (Gold) from North Babylon High School; Gianna Tantillo (Silver) from Half Hollow Hills High School East; Daniel Thompson (Gold) from Robert Frost Middle School in Deer Park; and, from St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip, Max Wenzel (Gold). “I commend all of these remarkable students for their commitment and enthusiasm,” said Legislator Donnelly. “They demonstrated initiative in embarking on the program and dedication in sticking with it to completion. Their final presentations were inspiringly detailed and very impressive.” Registration is currently underway for the 20192020 Distinguished Youth Awards Program. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about or becoming involved with this organization, please contact them today.

The Maurer Foundation is a non-profit organization that has been serving the community for over 20 years. Their mission is to save lives through breast health education that focuses on breast cancer prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, early detection and risk reduction. They are holding their Annual Maurer Foundation Pink Diamond Gala on Wednesday, October 2nd at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Huntington Station) recently honored 15 local students as Gold, Silver and Bronze recipients of the Suffolk County Legislature’s Distinguished Youth Award (DYA). Earning the awards after completion of an extensive year-long program, they were each recognized with medals and certificates in a special ceremony at the Suffolk County Legislature’s William H. Rogers Building in Hauppauge. A record number of students in Legislator Donnelly’s district completed the extensive DYA requirements in this second year of the program. A total of 31 Suffolk students earned awards, with nearly half of them, the largest representation ever, from Legislative District 17. The DYA program was created by the Legislative Resolution Number 4192017. The voluntary recognition program centers on four categories: Volunteer Service, Personal Development, Exploration and Physical Fitness and focuses on a holistic

Congregate Lunches For Seniors Smithtown’s senior citizens can participate in Congregate Lunches Mondays through Fridays, provided by the Town of Smithtown Senior Citizens Department. All residents ages 60 and over are invited to participate in this social setting. Free Smoking Cessation Classes

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today invited residents who use tobacco and are seeking assistance in breaking their addiction to sign up for free smoking cessation classes. The Learn to Be…Tobacco Free program offers assistance with planning, support, counseling and provides over-the counter medications to participants who are medically eligible. “Breaking an addiction to tobacco is never easy but with the right support network it can literally save one’s life,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “Since the inception of this program, thousands of smokers have participated in the program and increased their chances of succeeding in this task. I encourage anyone who is struggling to quit, to sign up for these informative classes and get healthier.” Dr. James Tomarken, Commissioner of Suffolk County Department of Health Services, said: “We know more than ever about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to tobacco cessation. Studies have shown that tobacco users who try to break their

addiction with behavioral support are more likely to be successful than those who try to do so without support.” The Office of Health Education staff has been facilitating tobacco cessation services through the Learn to Be …Tobacco Free program for 18 years, serving more than 19,000 residents. The program is a seven-week course that uses a comprehensive approach in the treatment of tobacco product dependence. Educational and behavioral strategies are provided to assist the patient in developing a quit plan to eliminate the use of tobacco products or electronic nicotine delivery systems, also called ENDS. The program also provides over-the counter medications for a fee to participants who are medically eligible. To register for the Learn to Be Tobacco Free program, contact the Suffolk County Department of Health Services at 631-8532928. YOUNG CODERS TAKE ON THE CHALLENGE - Young coders had a chance to explore their skills during the SCOPE Summer Explorations Program hosted by Smithtown Central School District at Accompsett Middle School. During part one of the program, students were introduced to coding using markers to write code for the Ozobot robots and worked to complete a given maze or challenge. During the second part of the summer session, students used the OzoBlocky program to write a program on the iPad and download it onto the Ozobot. all year long: Seek Shade. Avoid direct sun exposure during peak sun hours, between 10 AM and 4 PM, and use an umbrella while on the beach. On walks, keep to the shady side of the street and use a sun shield on your stroller. Cover Up. Keep your baby covered up with a brimmed hat and lightweight clothing that fully covers the arms and legs. For added protection, look for special clothing marked with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 30 or more. Be Careful in the Car. While glass screens out most UVB rays, the main cause of sunburn, UVA rays can penetrate windows. Like UVB rays, UVA rays damage DNA and can lead to skin cancer. By law, front windshields are treated to filter out most UVA, but side and rear windows generally aren’t. Consider buying a UV shield, which you can hang over any window that allows sunlight to reach the child’s car seat. Another option is to install professional UVblocking window film. Start Sunscreen at 6 Months. Since infants’ skin is so sensitive, it’s best to keep them out of the sun completely. Beginning at 6 months of age, you can introduce

sunscreen use. Choose a broad-spectrum, waterresistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Look at active ingredients; zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are good choices, because these inorganic filters are less apt to cause a skin reaction. You may want to test sunscreen on the inside of your baby’s wrist. If the child has a little irritation, try another sunscreen. Use Sunscreen As Directed. Use sunscreen on all exposed areas not covered by clothing, such as the back of the hands, face, ears and neck. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out and reapply it every two hours and immediately after swimming or sweating. Toddlers rarely stand still, so you may need to get creative with your sunscreen application routine. Sunscreen sticks work well for the face and hands, since the child is less likely to rub the product into their eyes. Sprays are another good option. Make sure to apply the sunscreen evenly and liberally all over exposed skin, then rub in. For the face, spray into your hands, then apply to your child’s face. GRATITUDE, COMMUNITY SHINE - Students in Sheri Fallacaro’s class in the Extended School Year Program in the Smithtown Central School District spent time this summer giving back to their local community. The program’s theme was “Gratitude, Growth and Learning.” The students wanted to do something for the community based on the theme so they decided on a food drive, for both people and pets, for the Smithtown Food Pantry. As we inch closer to September, many families may want to take advantage of the last full summer month by spending a lot of time outdoors. But whether you’re barbecuing in the backyard or taking a vacation at the beach, it’s important to remember sun protection for any little ones enjoying the summer sun with you. Babies are especially vulnerable to sun damage due to their relative lack of melanin, the skin pigment that provides some sun protection, so protecting them from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation is imperative. “All of the sun damage we receive as children adds up and greatly increases skin cancer risk later in life,” says Deborah S. Sarnoff, MD, president of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “That’s why it’s so important that parents make sun protection for infants and toddlers a priority and eventually teach children these habits that will benefit them for many years to come.” The Skin Cancer Foundation wants parents and caregivers to know that skin cancer is highly preventable and offers the following tips to help keep young children sun-safe for the rest of the summer and
