RJ, a resident of Kings Park, earned this distinguished rank through his commitment to the community, as well as the completion of his Eagle Scout Project, which was to enhance the Kings Park High School courtyard. He oversaw a group of volunteers who refurbished the gazebo, and he built two benches to install inside of it.

those who will try. Try to drive through three feet of water, try to navigate over icy roads, try to convince themselves of some way to rise above those circumstances clearly beyond their control. If the past several years have taught us anything, it is that these efforts are futile. Stay home. Accept the fact that, sometimes, it is better to wait out the storm than to drive (literally) into it. The same can be said for life as a whole. As
much as we all have this desperate need to control everything, we can’t. Simple as that. Sometimes, we need to accept fate and wait out the figurative “storm” until calmer winds prevail. In these situations, patience is truly a virtue, an enviable trait known only to some. And with that, I see rays of sun peeking through the clouds… Let’s hope I don’t meet too many obstacles on the road ahead.

New Interim Principal
The Commack Board of Education has appointed Mr. Paul K. Schmelter as the interim principal at Burr Intermediate School. Former principal Rhonda Pratt has returned to her previous position in West Islip Schools. A graduate of Stony Brook University, Mr.
Schmelter was a political science major and received his Masters Degree in Social Studies Education. He also earned his Educational Leadership certification at Stony Brook. He began his teaching career in private schools, and joined the Commack team in 1998. In addition to teaching, Mr. Schmelter served as a dean of discipline at the middle school, and as the Director of the Commack Teacher Center from its inception until 2012, when he became an assistant principal. “Mr. Schmelter is a very well-respected and experienced academic leader in this District,” said Superintendent Dr.
Donald James. “He is the consummate professional, and knows this District and its students.” Mr. Schmelter lives in Huntington with his wife and two children. He recently completed his first skydiving jump, visited the Grand Canyon, and is empowered to keep checking things off of his ever expanding bucket list. “I’m honored to have the opportunity to lead the team at Burr. I am really looking forward to working with the students, staff and parents at this amazing school.” Mr. Schmelter will serve as the interim principal at Burr until a search process is completed.
Mrs. Lipenholtz is a social studies lead teacher who has taught in the District for ten years and a Commack alumnus, Mrs. Lipenholtz is filling the void left by the retirement of Mrs. McKeever. Mrs. Lipenholtz received her Bachelors Degree in Secondary Education from Towson, her Masters from Dowling, and her Educational Leadership certification from Stony Brook University. She plays an active role on many District committees as the chair of the Alumni of Distinction Committee, and School Based Management Committees. Mrs. Lipenholtz has led staff development in content area literacy, instructional technology, and curriculum development. Legislator Steve Stern honored 10 year-old Christopher Schneider and his father, Russell, who saved their neighbors from a recent house fire, with a proclamation during a legislative session July 29th, 2014. On July 14th, 10 yearold Christopher Schneider noticed thick, black smoke billowing out of his neighbor’s home, alerted his father, Russell, and called 911 for help. Russell thought fast and ran to his neighbors’ home
where Marc Kimmel, wife, Doreen, and their 2 yearold son, Anthony, were all home. He banged on the door until the family came out to safety. Thinking quickly, Russell grabbed a garden hose and began to extinguish the flames while firefighters rushed to the scene. Christopher Schneider was soon hailed as the “Hero of Ulster Court” by the Commack Fire Department. Since the incident, the Kimmel family has grown with the

Continuing her education with a Masters Degree from C.W. Post, and Administrative Certification from the College of St. Rose, she earned her Doctorate of Education last year from
Concordia University in Illinois. “I am very excited to join the exceptional team of teachers and administrators at Commack Middle School. I look forward to getting to know the students, their families, teachers, and staff in the Commack School District. I have always had a passion for working with students at the middle level. It is a unique time in their lives where we continue to set high academic standards while balancing the social and emotional needs of our students as they transition from children to young adults,” Dr. Sapienza said. Dr. Sapienza is originally from Huntington. When it came time to purchase a home, she reflected, “We chose to live in Commack for the strong sense of community and high achieving school district.” Dr. Sapienza is married and has three children. Her husband works as an administrator in the Jericho School District.

Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta congratulated RJ Pitta of Boy Scout Troop 75 at his recent Eagle Scout Court of Honor. RJ, a resident of Kings Park, earned the distinguished rank of Eagle Scout through his commitment to the community, as well as the completion of his Eagle Scout Project, which was to enhance the Kings Park High School courtyard.
He oversaw a group of volunteers who refurbished the gazebo and he built two benches to install inside of it. RJ designed and planted a perennial garden and added pavestones to the area. RJ will be attending the University of Fredonia where he plans to major in History and English with the goal of becoming a teacher. Legislator Trotta, who coached RJ’s younger brother Phillip in soccer,
said, “Your pledge to our town has been evident since 2007 when you joined the Boy Scouts, and now that you have attained the rank of Eagle Scout you have demonstrated that you are a leader and an active member of our community who only wants the best for the youth and great people of Kings Park. I applaud your actions and urge you to keep up the good work.”

“Bloodfest” A Success On August 6th, Legislator Kennedy held his 5th Annual Bloodfest, a blood and food driv,e at his office located in the North County Complex in Hauppauge. As always, the New York Blood Center and Long Island Cares were on site collecting both blood and food donations respectively. Long Island Cares, founded by the late Harry Chapin, has been collecting and distributing food to the hungry of Long Island since 1980. New York Blood Center (NYBC) was established in 1964 and is one of the largest communitybased, nonprofit blood collection and distribution organizations in the United States. Since Bloodfest’s inception, a key aspect has been tits laid back atmosphere with live music and a barbeque for all those who donate or help with the drive. This day could not have occurred
without the generosity of local merchants, such as Walmart, Trader Joe’s, King Kullen, Meat Farms, Handy Pantry and Subway, who all provided food, drinks or supplies to aid in this event. The Hauppauge Fire Department lent a helping hand by donating enough ice to fill several coolers used to store the drinks and the IBEW, Local 25 lent their grill to the office for cooking. Once again, the Suffolk County IT Band provided live music and serenaded the crowd with a wide selection of classic rock music. Bloodfest V was an incredible success, as the number of blood and food donors was even larger than that of the previous year. The New York Blood Center collected a total of 73 units or pints of blood from 54 whole blood donors and 20 red blood cell donors. Long Island Cares collected 100 pounds of food or the equivalent of
83 meals. Bloodfest was the fourth stop on Legislator Kennedy’s 2014 Out For Blood Tour, with the next drive scheduled for August 31st at the Ronkonkoma Street Fair on Hawkins Avenue from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you missed Bloodfest, you can donate blood at one of Legislator Kennedy future blood drives at: • Nesconset Day Fair September 7th • Smithtown Historical Society - September 21st • Saint James Day Festival - September 28th • Grub Fir Yule Blood December 29th For more information, contact Legislator Kennedy’s Office at 631.854.3735.
