The audience was able to meet the scouts after the performance. It was an unforgettable experience to share with young and old alike. The ten youths and their two adult leaders were one of three Friendship Caravans from the Israel Scout summer delegation that arrived in the U.S. in

May and will return home in mid-August. Other Tzofim served as camp counselors at various summer camps throughout America. Birch Family Services, a New York City non-profit organization is hosting its 3rd Annual 5K Race at the Hudson River Park on November 7th, at 12 p.m. This event will benefit the 1,500 children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities that Birch serves daily throughout NYC. This is 33 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan By the time you read this, I will have celebrated my 33rd birthday, as momentous an occasion as any, if you ask me. Because, really, every year is a milestone in its own right, a small commemoration of our respective lives as they stand at a given moment in time. Sure, nice round numbers generate parties and extensive recognition; but who’s to say that one year is more significant than the last, or the ones yet to come? As I write this, I am still two days away from officially marking the transition from 32 to 33, but in some ways, I feel like it’s already come and gone. Have you ever noticed that, when someone

asks your age, there is usually a subtle point in time when you’ve mentally moved on? Slightly over the halfway point, “I just turned 32” becomes “I’ll be 33,” and the years somehow meld together as one giant expanse of time. What’s the rush? In my case, anytime my age has occasion to be mentioned, it is usually met with incredulous looks and exclamations of, No way! You’re lying… You can’t be older than 25, maybe. Well, that would be nice and all, but no – I’ve been a member of the 30+ club for a few years now, and I’m still not quite certain what makes that fact so unbelievable to outsiders. Of course, so I’m told,

there will come a day – not too far down the line – where I will learn to greatly appreciate this misconception, and savor the countless times I am asked for I.D. (for scratchoff tickets and Rated-R movies, no less), but not today. Today, I am proud to be (almost) 33, and willing to embrace all that comes with this next year, this next milestone. If we’ve learned anything, it’s that we cannot unwind the clock. Time passes, people come and go, and each day is truly a gift. Neither dwelling on the past nor wishing for the future will change the present. And what a “present” it is. Happy “Day” to all, every day. See you on the flip side.

HEARING HELP IS AN IMPORTANT DECISION

On Friday, August 7th, the Long Beach International Film Festival took the concept of “Dinner and a Movie” to a whole new level, adding the spectacular “Taste on the Beach” event to their widely respected Shorts on the Beach series. Beginning at 5 p.m. with a red carpet, over 4000 attendees (and a DRONE filming overhead!) reveled in the summer heat at what was billed as the biggest beach party of the summer; checking out the latest in independent short films and live musical performances while sampling the finest local food, wine & craft beers in an intimate theatre setting right on the beach. Festival goers ended the evening with a fantastic rooftop after party at the nearby Alegria Hotel. Among the many interesting titles that were featured included Director Brooke Wagstaff’s animated film and Award-winning Vimeo Staff Pick “Missing U”; an animated tale about the letter “I” and her perilous adventure in search of her missing “U”. As a Long Island highlight, Director Peter Frizalone’s HBO Project Greenlight Top 200 “Mommy” made its World Premiere begging the question “Do you know who is in your house?” Other films shown included Director Chris Jordan-Bloch’s documentary on an evergrowing world issue “Dryden - The Small Town That Changed the Fracking Game” where the power of community takes on the power of fracking; Director/Producer Stephanie Donnelly’s narrative/comedy “The Cannoli” where a Long Island family dinner turns tragic and a choice must be made between dessert and family; Director Sarah Menzies’ San Diego Surf Film Festival Best Short winning documentary “Catch It”, which follows Léa Brassy as her nomadic lifestyle takes a pause and she finds serenity in the

Arctic surf of Northern Norway; and Croatian Director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovi’s World Premiere of “Eye for an Eye”, in which child’s play turns into a showdown of imagination and discipline. Long Beach International Film Festival Programmer Steve Shor recently said of the event, “The Shorts on the Beach program is a wonderful representation of what is in store for the Long Beach International Film Festival in September. The program opened with the Oscar winning short Feast from Walt Disney Animation. Additional animated shorts included Deep End by Oscar nominee Bill Plympton and Bear Story- a Chilean computer animated short (considered one of the best this year). In the short documentary arena, we had Trust Design by Interior Design Magazine and Dryden by EarthJustice. Finally, the program included some wonderful Narrative

submissions from New York based directors and Universities”. The Festival will celebrate its 4th anniversary this year from September 24th through 27th and will screen an international slate of films, including feature-length narrative, documentary, short and animated that will compete for a series of Jury, Festival Honors and Audience Awards. A new addition for 2015 LBIFF includes the Joan Jett Music Film Series. There will also be exhibiting films in the categories of Action Sports, Environmental, Art & Family. The American Heart Association is proud to have Gabriella Lisboa serving as the 2015 Long Island Heart Walk “Red Cape” Ambassador. This year’s Long Island Heart Walk will be taking place on Sunday, September 20th, at Jones Beach. Gabriella was just 6 months old when she was diagnosed with DCRV (Double Chamber of Right Ventricle) and had to have two open heart surgeries when she was nine months old.

Today, she is a happy and healthy and has made it her mission to raise money and awareness for the American Heart Association so that they can do more research and educate others so that there are more survivors like her. At the Heart Walk, survivors are celebrated. A “Red Cap” is a red baseball cap featuring the American Heart Association logo. “Red Caps” refer to survivors of heart attack, cardiac

arrest or heart surgery who wear the red caps as a symbol of their survival while walking in the Heart Walk. “White Caps” will be distributed to stroke survivors the day of the walk. Pediatric cardiovascular disease survivors will receive red super hero capes to acknowledge their courage. Hundreds of survivors from across Long Island participate to show that heart disease and stroke can be beaten.

The American Heart Association estimates there are more than 71 million Americans alive with one or more types of cardiovascular disease. As Red Cape Ambassador for the Long Island Heart Walk, Gabriella will help create awareness about the importance of survivors participating in the event and to create awareness that heart disease and stroke aren’t “just an older man’s diseases.” On Sunday, September

Legislator Leslie Kennedy was recently invited to Resurrection Byzantine Catholic Church in Smithtown, as she was honored by the renowned group the Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA). This distinct cultural group inducted Leslie as an honorary member into the Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro Lodge #2319 chapter; Leslie was recognized as an Italian–American Public Servant in the community of Suffolk. The Order of Sons of Italy in America is a

national organization that has been dedicated in upholding and promoting the Italian heritage in the U.S. since 1905; it is comprised of nearly 26 million members nationwide. The main mission of the organization is to encourage the study of the Italian language as well as the intricate history and rich culture. The chapter congratulated Leslie as she has helped to exemplify these essential principles of the overall group. A brief induction ceremony took place at

the church after which followed a small celebration dinner. Leslie was given a Certificate of Membership that acknowledged her accomplishment. After the conclusion of the festivity, Leslie expressed her heartfelt thanks to the association: “It was my honor to be officially inducted into the Order of Sons of Italy in America! Board Meetings The facilities committee of the Kings Park CSD will provide a detailed presentation to the district’s Board of Education and community outlining building infrastructure, safety and security, athletics, and curricular issues in potential need of address. The presentation will be given at the district’s Board meeting on Tuesday, August 25th, at 7:30 p.m. at Kings Park High School. This is the second of several meetings soliciting feedback from the Board and community concerning the next steps in addressing the district’s

facilities issues. Established by the Board, the facilities committee is comprised of district leaders, staff members and community members. The district formed the committee with the charge to review the building conditions study, engage in thoughtful conversation about student and community needs, identify challenges through building tours and prioritize those needs and challenges, and offer recommendations and suggested future actions to the Board of Education. The committee will also

present funding and school tax implications, along with information about the district’s eligibility to receive state building aid on approved projects. The public will have an opportunity to ask questions at the conclusion of the presentation. The Board will review the recommendations of the facilities committee and solicit feedback from the community before making any final decisions with regard to presenting a bond referendum to the community for approval during the 2015-2016 school year.

BloodFest a Success

EAGLE COURT HONOREE - Legislator Leslie Kennedy recently honored Jesse Prato with a proclamation at his Eagle Court of Honor. In order to fulfill his Eagle Scout Project, Jesse constructed kennels for Save-A-Pet, an animal rescue shelter located in Port Jefferson. The newly-built kennels ensure that the dogs have a safe place to stay until they are adopted.

Legislator Leslie Kennedy hosted her BloodFest blood drive and food drive in conjunction with Long Island Cares recently outside of her office in the North County Complex. As part of the BloodFest, Leslie Kennedy’s office held an outdoor cookout for those who donated blood. Food for the cookout was donated from various restaurants and businesses throughout Smithtown and the surrounding area. Suffolk County’s very own IT band, made up of employees from the Information Technology department came to

entertain those who came to take part in BloodFest. Every participant who attempted to donate blood will be receiving two complimentary Mets tickets in the mail. BloodFest had a successful run, with 49 pints of blood gathered, as well as food collected for Long Island Cares. “I am so thankful for everyone who made BloodFest possible, I want to thank New York Blood Service, Long Island Cares, all the local restaurants and businesses that donated food and supplies, and of course everyone who donated lifesaving blood to

the cause,” said Leslie. Legislator Kennedy’s office will have their next blood drive on Sunday, September 6th. during the Ronkonkoma Street Fair; it will be located at Hawkins Ave in Ronkonkoma.
