Legislative Page Program
T
he culmination of the Suffolk County Legislative Page program came last Wednesday with the page program graduation. This summer, the Suffolk County Legislature and the Clerk’s office ran the page program. This program consists of an internship mixed with mock legislature; students play the role of legislator and learn how the process works on a county level, while helping legislators several times a week with their day-to-day duties.

Newsweek examined six measurements and weighted them to formulate a college readiness index. On a beautiful day in early August Legislator Leslie Kennedy held her office blood drive and cookout with live music courtesy of the IT Band made up of county employees who work in the Information Technology department. Food donations for Long Island Cares were taken for those in need in our community. All those who were gracious enough to give blood received two free Mets tickets to go see last Year’s National League Champs play at Citi Field. Those who donated blood were able to refuel their tanks with some hot dogs and hamburgers, all the food was donated from Shoprite, and King Kullen, as well as various

Anne Huntington, head of public private partnerships at Huntington Learning Center, says that the company always looks for ways to give back to its communities and support programs that align with Huntington’s mission to give every student the best education possible. “We are very pleased to partner with the Coalition for the Homeless for this important program that helps children start the year off right with the school supplies they need,” she says. “We invite our Huntington families and all New Yorkers to join us in this effort and drop off supplies or in-kind donations at one of our participating centers.” According to the

Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU), one of the country’s largest credit unions, is supporting Team TFCU, an employee community service group of volunteers, as they call on members to donate school supplies for children in need at their local TFCU branch. Throughout the month of August, all 25 TFCU branches will have collection boxes and staff ready to assist members who wish to donate items. Recently, the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce had their second to last Summer concert, with Beginnings performing their tribute to Chicago. Many gathered to hear the songs of Chicago, as well as give back to the community. To kick off the concert, DJ Burns from Middle Country School district sang our National Anthem. As always, Long Island Cares was in attendance
to collect food for those in need amongst our communities. The Nesconset Chamber of Commerce was able to collect over eighteen hundred dollars with their fifty-fifty raffle, their largest collection this summer; as always, Little Miss Nesconset was happy to select the raffle winner out of a hat. Beginnings performed their concert not in the Gazebo, as bands normally
do, but at crowd level with the rest of the concertgoers. They performed a wonderful show and all in attendance seemed to enjoy themselves. “This was a beautiful night and a great show. I want to thank the Nesconset Chamber for making everything run smoothly this evening, as well as DJ Burns for singing the National Anthem,” said Leslie Kennedy.

The culmination of the Suffolk County Legislative Page program came last Wednesday with the page program graduation. This summer the Suffolk County Legislature and in particular the Legislature Clerk’s office ran the page program. This program consists of an internship mixed with mock legislature; students play the role of legislator and learn how the legislative process works on a county level, while helping legislators
several times a week with their day to day duties in the office. From Legislator Kennedy’s office, both Maria Massimo and Stephen Mott graduated from the program. Stephen is going into his sophomore year at SUNY Geneseo and he hopes to study law after his undergraduate career. Maria is going into her junior year at Villanova University and also hopes to study law; she has an interest in international politics and hopes to work
in that realm one day. “Both Maria and Stephen have been wonderful additions to my office, they have helped me out a lot and have been working side by side with my Aides. I hope they have learned a good deal about constituent services and they will be greatly missed when they go back to school this fall. I want to thank all those who have worked to make this program available for our young students who reside in Suffolk County.” said Legislator Kennedy

Residential Repair Program Are you a Smithtown Resident? Are you a senior citizen? Can you use the assistance of a “handyman”? The Smithtown Senior Citizen Department can help you! They employ a crew of experienced maintenance personnel who provide a variety of minor home repair services to senior citizen residents. For example, they repair leaky faucets and running toilets, install locks and make adjustments on doors, replace light fixtures, change hard to reach light bulbs,
install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, install bathroom grab bars and indoor railings, clean first floor gutters and more! All requests are handled on a first come, first served basis, with preference given to safety-related jobs. Emergency services are not provided, and “cosmetic” work is not part of the programs. Laura Greif, Program Director explains, “We strive to assist our senior citizen residents with the everyday maintenance of their homes with a focus on the elements that keep
them safe and secure.” The Residential Repair Program assists seniors age 60 and older. While there is no charge for labor, participants pay for, or provide, all materials. Smithtown Central School District has appointed Dr. Kevin Simmons as principal of Smithtown High School
East, effective July 1st. Since 2008, Dr. Simmons served as principal of Nesaquake Middle School in the Smithtown Central
School District. Prior to that position, he served as assistant principal at Nesaquake Middle School and Smithtown Middle School. Leading up to his administrative duties, Dr. Simmons was a social studies teacher in the Syosset Central School District. Dr. Simmons holds a doctorate in administration and supervision from St. John’s University. Emergency Food Collection Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta is hosting a summer food drive and collecting school supplies for the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry, which is based at the St. Thomas of Canterbury Church in Smithtown. Donations may be dropped off at Legislator Trotta’s district office at 59 Landing Avenue in Smithtown, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Legislator Trotta will be collecting non-perishable food that can be used for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as baby food,
formula and snacks. He is also accepting toiletries, diapers, paper products and pet food/treats. School items needed include back packs, composition books, notebooks, glue sticks, crayons, colored pencils, pencils and pencil cases, pencil sharpeners, pens, erasers, color markers, highlighters, pocket folders, index cards and boxes, Fiskars children’s scissors and Baby Wipes. Legislator Trotta said, “The Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry does a wonderful job
throughout the year of assisting area residents who need a helping hand. If my office can supplement their donations, I am pleased to do so.” The Food Panty, which has been in existence for more than 29 years, is supported by contributions from the community, as well as the parishioners of seven Smithtown Churches that also volunteer to staff the pantry and organize the supplies. Visitors to the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum’s Reichert Planetarium can now view the Sun through a new solar telescope. The Planetarium has just installed a Lunt Solar Systems hydrogen-alpha solar telescope in the Observatory – for daytime observation of the Sun. Dave Bush, the Planetarium’s technical and production coordinator, and an astronomy educator, said the solar telescope is mounted “piggy back” onto the 16-inch Meade reflecting telescope in order to track the Sun across the sky. “The refractor-style telescope with its 80-milimeter optical aperture gives us sharp detail and contrast of
features on the surface and the limb, or edge, of the Sun,” he said. “This telescope allows us to see prominences, flares, super granulation, filaments, and active regions.” Bush explained that hydrogen-alpha light is emitted by the hydrogen atoms that make up the majority of the Sun’s composition. When electrons within the hydrogen atoms absorb energy and rise to a higher energy level then fall back to their original orbits, light is emitted at a particular wavelength that can be seen with the specialized telescope.” “Typically, telescopic views of objects in outer space rarely change before our eyes in real-time,” Bush said. “However, on a day when the Sun is
particularly active we can watch features on the Sun evolve before our eyes while looking through an H-alpha telescope! “The sun is dynamic and alive. It changes daily, and rotates.” Bush explained the solar features in the picture at left, shot by photographer Alan Friedman.: The wisps of white curling off the upper left curve of the Sun are prominences, or arcs of gas that erupt from the surface. Sometimes the loops extend thousands of miles into space. The lighter spots and streaks are called plages, the French word for beaches, and are, appropriately hot spots or bright emissions caused by emerging flux regions associated with the magnetic field of the Sun.
