On the morning of Tuesday, August 7th, the Long Island Board of REALTORS®, Inc. (LIBOR) President Charlotte Van der Waag and Presidentelect Dianne Scalza had the distinct pleasure of presenting the REALTOR® Scouting Scholarship Award to four of the six outstanding recipients, at a special breakfast held for the recipients and their parents in Lindenhurst. Through this scholarship program, sponsored by LIBOR’s “We’re More Than REALTORS®” Public Relations Campaign, LIBOR awarded six $1,000 merit-based Scholarships to three New York Eagle Scouts and three New York Gold Girl Scouts in the graduating class of 2018. Along with the scholarship application, candidates were asked to submit an essay on “What HOME means to me.” The results were a heartwarming array of poignant memories and anecdotes of life and home (to them) on Long Island.
The RSS recipients are as follows (in alphabetical order): Ryan Ewanyk of East Northport, Hanna Hudson of Centereach, Jake Linkletter of Miller Place, Alexandra Romanoff of Setauket, Bryan Sinclair of Smithtown, Chloe Van Dorn of Syosset. The areas of study amongst this exceptional group of young women and men include: engineering, medicine, education and business at Clarkson University, Case Western Reserve University, St. Joseph’s College and University at Albany, to name a few. LIBOR is honored to affiliate ourselves with the Boy and Girl Scouts of America, whose goal is to build the character of young women, men, boys and girls, who then go on to become great citizens in our communities. Eagle Scout and the Girl Scout Gold Award are the highest rank and achievement attainable in the Scouting

However, as a guide, here’s how I have been doing this for the past several years, and it works just fine: Each day (usually late in the afternoon or early evening), I review my calendar (which I call my planner) and note which items (emphasis on the As and Bs) that have already been completed and which ones need to be carried over to the next day. This only takes a few minutes, and it is essential to be done. When completed, you now have a list of tasks to be done for the next day. The only task remaining is to classify them by their numeric number (As, Bs, etc) and place them into the next

Special Note: Every time I teach one of the seminars, the following questions always arise: “My boss calls me and tells me that he wants to see right away and I do not have this as an “A” priority - what do I do? The answer is simple: DROP EVERY AND SEE YOUR BOSS IMMEDIATELY! However, when you get back to your desk, put this as a completed “A” priority and include any follow-ups required. When all that is done, go right back to your “to-do” list and start completing the next item on your list. SUMMARY As you have already seen, the key to this system’s success is the sequence that it follows. We start the night before reviewing what has been completed, then make the necessary adjustments for the next day. Starting each day, we start on the important “A” priorities, being mindful that all “A”s must be completed before going on to the “B”s. We also remain very flexible with the schedule, allowing time for lunch and work breaks, and of course adjustments for unexpected events. 3 Techniques to Help Kids Concentrate
C
lassrooms are now vastly different from the ones today’s parents were accustomed to when they were children. Technology has changed the face of classrooms, and while digital classrooms have revolutionized the ways kids learn, they also can make it more difficult for students to concentrate.
Computers, tablets and smartphones can be invaluable resources for teachers and students. But when such devices compromise student’s ability to concentrate, parents may need to embrace various techniques aimed at improving kids’ ability to concentrate.
1. Discourage personal devices in the classroom. Computers and tablets can expand learning opportunities in the classroom, but parents who want their kids to focus on lessons can discourage the use of personal devices, such as smartphones or personal tablets, in the classroom. As noted by the Child Mind® Institute, apps and web content are designed to be user-friendly and addictive. In addition, modern youngsters socialize through their smartphones. Alerts or messages from social media apps or friends can distract kids from their lessons, which may adversely affect their academic performance. Unless teachers ask students to bring their personal devices to class, parents can
discourage, if not restrict, their children to bring their smartphones or tablets with them to class. 2. Limit multitasking.
A 2009 study from researchers at Stanford University found that heavy media multitaskers were more susceptible to interference from irrelevant environmental stimuli and from irrelevant representations in memory than light media multitaskers. Students who try to do too much at once may think they’re getting a lot done, but dividing their attention among several subjects may make it harder for them to fully understand or learn their class lessons. When studying, students who concentrate on one subject or task may understand materials more fluently than those who divide their attention among subjects or those who focus on studying while also performing other tasks.

Calm the Chaos on Busy School Mornings Mornings can test the patience and stamina of busy families as adults and children hurry to get out the door on time. Starting off the morning already stressed can lead to feeling tense throughout the rest of the day. There is no magic formula to make mornings less hectic, but the following are some ways families can streamline their morning routines: Make use of the night before. Morning madness may come about due to lack of preparation the previous night. The more that can be done the night before, the less there will be to do on weekday mornings. Encourage children to lay out clothes for the next day and take a shower or bath that evening. Make lunches the night before a school day, and gather all supplies from homework stations, restocking backpacks and gym bags so everything is ready to go come the morning.

Communication Skills Kids Can Learn
A
n ability to communicate effectively is a life skill that can serve a person well at any age. Communication well is considered so essential that the Boy Scouts of America even require prospective Eagle Scouts to earn communication merit badges.
It’s never too early to help children become better communicators. From toddlerhood to grade school and beyond, learning how to interact with others are necessary at every stage. Developing communication takes time, but there are various techniques to help kids become better communicators.
Great communication is a twoway process. Listening is often as important as speaking when communicating. Parents can help model good behavior by listening and letting children express themselves before offering their own opinions.
Take turns in conversation. Rather than speaking at the same time or interrupting others, effective communicators take turns offering their thoughts. Listening to others can help shape what the other person might say. Speak regularly with one another. Initiate conversation frequently so that children become accustomed to speaking with adults and others. Chat about where you’re going when running errands or discuss television plots during commercial breaks.
Make conversations relevant. Allow experiences that are happening around the family to shape conversations. Encourage curiosity and introduce new themes and vocabulary. The more the child gets to experience, the more inclined he or she may be to discuss those experiences.

Beginnings Birthdays are beginnings. This is a sentiment I have always held particularly close to my heart, if for no other reason than it allows for the momentary illusion of a fresh start, at least for one day. What evolves beyond that point in time is anyone’s guess of course; but the symbolic turning of the page is one that resonates quite deeply for me. This year’s birthday falls within an interval of time that is especially significant, the start of a completely new chapter in my life. After 13 years as editor of South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers and Seasons Magazine, I will be leaving my position to pursue a new adventure at the close of the month, taking my love of writing to the next level and exploring the vast opportunities that await just around the bend. Change is never easy, least of all for someone with my affinity for routine and structure; but, as with all things, sometimes fate takes a hand and points you in a direction you never thought possible. Time, as we know, is one of life’s most precious commodities. As much as we would like to believe there will always be another chance to embark on a particular journey
or pursue a particular dream, the simple fact is that we can never be certain. The time is now, always. I have countless fond memories of my years working here at the old “South Bay” paper that I grew up reading, which I will touch on in more detail as the weeks progress. For now, though, suffice it to say that I am extremely grateful for the chance I was given to show my worth as a fresh-faced college graduate all those years ago. What began as a first step to “get a foot in the door” turned into a huge portion of my career, during which I was able to grow and flourish. My nearly 700 In Step columns stand as the biggest testament to the incredible support I have received from my co-workers, family and friends - and, perhaps most importantly, from those readers who have turned into loyal followers and fans. You have all come along for this journey, week after week, and for that I am forever thankful. Milestones have come and gone, as the columns have accumulated and the memories have been stored away for safekeeping between the lines of type. Along the way, the
particular numbers have gotten miscalculated and misplaced; but now, as I approach the final stretch, I felt an official “count” was in order. To my surprise - and delight, given how I began this particular selection, I will finish my tenure here with precisely 681 columns - my birthdate {8/16} “boxed,” if you will, for those familiar with gambling terminology. A fitting end, if you ask me. And with that, one more column in the books, three remaining - I would like to ask you, readers, for your feedback on what have been some of your favorites through the years, the topics and tales that stood above the rest. Your input has always been appreciated, and has been noted in many of my narratives over time. The stories may have been my own, but the writing was always for you. I look forward to reading your thoughts, and to taking you on my journey as I continue to contribute columns from time to time to my own personal website, SnapshotsAndSilhouettes.com. ’Til next time, may tomorrow’s birthday be just the beginning of a beautiful new chapter.

Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: seniors at home, the home confined, hospice, sober houses and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space, and she incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Another unique niche that her traveling salon taps into is serving those who may have specific allergies or reactions to different products used in salons. By traveling to her clients, Eileen can ensure that they will only be surrounded by products they feel comfortable with. If you wish to get involved with Scanlon’s Traveling Salon, you can! Youth Baseball Clinic
St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center will host a “Field of Dreams” Youth Baseball Clinic on August 26th from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Smithtown High School East Baseball Field. This clinic will feature professional Major League baseball players, including some from Long Island, such as MLB player and Smithtown native, Frank Catalanotto. The purpose of the free clinic is to get the children and families of Smithtown outside and spending time together, while also learning more about the sport. “I am truly looking forward to being a part of this wonderful annual event wherein generations of successful ball players pass on knowledge and inspiration to our youth, promoting health and fitness, safe practices and a bond with our community,” said Supervisor Ed Wehrheim This is the second year that the clinic will be SUMMER PREP - Smithtown Central School District has its Extended School held. I know our CAO, Jim O’Connor, and our medical staff are grateful, and sought once again to host an event for the community we humbly serve in order to show our appreciation, and to give back,” said Executive Director of the St. Catherine of Siena Foundation Tom Mclaughlin The instructors for the upcoming clinic include former New York Mets first
baseman Ed Kranepool, outfielder Art Shamsky, and pitcher Bill Pulsipher, as well as former New York Yankees first baseman Frank Tepedino. In addition, the Long Island scout for the New York Mets, Larry Izzo, will be on hand to coach and answer questions with Jon Mauchan, Minnesota Twins scout. The Long Island Ducks will be represented by manager and former Met, Kevin Baez, and the team’s mascot, Quackerjack. Smithtown’s own Frank Catalanotto will also be present at the event. Catalanotto played in the MLB from 1997-2010, for the Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, Milwaukee Brewers, and the New York Mets, and is now looking forward to giving back to the children and families of his hometown of Smithtown at the clinic.
