Health Services, said: “We know more than ever about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to tobacco cessation. Studies have shown that tobacco users who try to break their addiction with behavioral support are more likely to be successful than those who try to do so without support.” The Office of Health Education staff has been facilitating tobacco cessation services through the Learn to Be …Tobacco Free program for 18 years, serving more than 19,000 residents. The program is a seven-week course that uses a comprehensive approach in the treatment of tobacco product dependence. Educational and behavioral strategies are provided to assist the patient in developing a quit plan to eliminate the use of tobacco products or electronic nicotine delivery systems, also called ENDS. The program
also provides over-the counter medications for a fee to participants who are medically eligible. To register for the Learn to Be Tobacco Free program, contact the Suffolk County Department of Health Services at 631853-2928. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today invited residents who use tobacco and are seeking assistance in breaking their addiction to sign up for free smoking cessation classes. The Learn to Be…Tobacco Free program offers assistance with planning, support, counseling and provides over-the counter medications to participants who are medically eligible. “Breaking an addiction to tobacco is never easy but with the right support network it can literally save one’s life,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “Since the inception of this program, thousands of smokers have participated in the program and increased their chances of succeeding in this task. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.
Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 2 sessions will be on August 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. Additionally, in only two days (on August 16th), The Social Brain will host a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association at 6:30PM! This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. Smithtown Central School District’s extended school year program helps to create opportunities for students to continue their academics throughout the summer months. This year’s theme of “Gratitude, Growth and Learning” ties into the district’s social-emotional learning initiatives.
“Along with addressing academics and each child’s individualized goals to prevent skill regression, we touched upon important social-emotional topics,” said Matt Connolly, program director. “We worked on establishing friendships, promoting empathy, conflict resolution and developing compassion.”
This summer, 116 students were enrolled in the program in 11 different classes housed at Smithtown Elementary School. Students participated in specials including computers, physical education, and group activities such as field day, carnival day and an end-of-summer picnic.

Makeover For St. James General Store

The Town of Smithtown Traffic Safety Department is working on a series of pedestrian and driver safety measures to improve the area surrounding the St. James General Store, located on the corner of Moriches Rd. and Harbor Hill Rd. The project was presented by Traffic Safety after damage to a drainpipe required the Highway Department to go into the ground to replace it. Traffic Safety Director Mitch Crowley used the road work as an opportunity to design a safer intersection. Using capital funds leftover in pedestrian safety projects, these new improvements will make a historically difficult corner much safer for shoppers, joggers, bikers and drivers. “This is the perfect little downtown revitalization project at the end of the Lake Avenue business district. I commend Mitch Crowley and his department for bringing
this idea to the table, when a drainpipe unexpectedly needed repair. This project increases foot traffic for the historic general store and makes the intersection much safer for our residents and visitors.” Supervisor Ed Wehrheim Two solar powered LED rectangular rapid flash beacon (RRFB) pedestrian signs featuring push button activation are to be installed, along with a cobblestone style pedestrian crosswalk. Concrete curbs and sidewalks will be redone as well. The upgraded sidewalks and crosswalks will be handicap accessible, with sidewalks at a width of 5 feet, and ramps, as per the guidelines set by the New York State Department of Transportation. The Traffic Safety Department has planned to build a Bulbout, or a mini halfcircle island in front of the General Store. This
unique design helps to prevent driver blind spots, creates a safer waiting area for pedestrians, and slows down traffic as it descends along this downhill road. “Overall, safer pedestrian crosswalks and walkways would be very much welcomed. It has always been a problem when pedestrians would walk from one site to another along Taylor Lane crossing at Moriches Road. Anything to make this intersection safer would be tremendous.” - St. James General Store Manager Karen Sheedy The renovated crosswalk will connect the parking lots for the St. James General Store and Deepwells Farm Historical Society, which will help to ease foot traffic concerns for pedestrians crossing Moriches Road. Renovations are expected to begin next week, after the drainpipe has been repaired.

Helping To Save Stony Brook Creek Stony Brook Creek, derived from its Native American name, WOPOWOG “Brook Ladened with Stones”, is now threatened by silt buildup and invasive species. Phragmites, an invasive species is choking many waterways on Long Island. Government executives and local Long Islandbased corporations in conjunction with the Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO) are helping to save Stony Brook Creek. They are working together to respond to this serious environmental challenge. The Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO) received a grant from the County of Suffolk
for a pilot program to remove 12,000 square feet of this species along Stony Brook Creek. This first of its kind, the new innovative process uses no chemicals and no mechanical equipment. It is removed by a hand cutting process. It was tested in a small area and the results are positive, with very limited regrowth. The total cost of the project is $21,500.00. The County of Suffolk is providing one-half of the funding from the ¼% Sales Tax Suffolk County Water Quality Protection and Restoration Program (WQPRP). The other 50% will be provided by two notfor-profit organizations, WMHO and Avalon Park & Preserve, each of
which has long-standing commitments to the preservation of the Stony Brook area. Because this is a unique procedure, there was a two-year approval process that is now coming to fruition. Efforts must start in early August before Phragmite seeds pollinate. The project has widespread support from the corporate community. Over 25 employees of Lessings, Inc. and People’s United Bank, two Long Island-based corporations who believe in supporting environmental enhancement and conservation projects, helped to remove pilings that floated into the waterway and logs from fallen trees to stop further buildup of silt on Tuesday, August 10.

Building Character At C.A.M.P. Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District is home to the C.A.M.P. (Character, Education, Mindset, Preparedness) program during the summer months. C.A.M.P. is a program for middle school students to help develop both their academic and social-emotional needs. While reinforcing the district’s socialemotional initiatives,
the program also features STEM-based learning and handson experimentation. For example, students recently participated in an activity where they had to design a life preserver for a small baby doll using tubing and rubber bands. The babies had to float face up in the water-filled cup to be considered a successful flotation device.
Working in small groups, students rotate to different workshops throughout the day. They work on their creativity during Genius Hour, a project-based learning initiative that allows students to explore their passions.
