On Thursday, August 8th, The Rotary Club of Smithtown-Sunrise guest speaker was Terrie Magro, RN, MA, VP/Co-Founder of the Michael Magro Foundation. Terrie stated that her son Michael, whom the foundation is named after, was a thirteen year-old seventh grader at Hicksville Middle School when he was first diagnosed with pneumonia which shortly afterward on June 8th, 2004 proved to be Leukemia (A.L.L.) Michael was in a very high risk group due to his age and the type of Leukemia he had and sadly passed away July 30th, 2004. Previous to Michael’s diagnosis, Terrie and her husband Paul’s life had taken a turn when their younger son Marc was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Marc at the time was in 5th grade at Woodland Elementary School in Hicksville and never felt sick or missed more than a handful of days in 5 years at Woodland. Where do parents go from here? Terrie and Paul Magro decided to start a nonprofit foundation in Michael’s memory to help other families who have children diagnosed with pediatric cancer. A 501(C)3 corporation was formed in 2005 with an all volunteer executive board and advisory board. They raised money through fund raisers supporting The Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop Hospital, Winthrop Pediatric Associates, Cohen’s Children Hospital, Nassau University Medcial
Center, to mention a few. The Mission of the Michael Magro Foundation as adopted by the Board of Directors is to: Better the lives of children with cancer, pediatric cancer survivors, and their families as well as the other chronic pediatric illnesses by helping families meet the complex issues of care; Touch thousands of lives by educating patients, families, teachers, physicians and communities about the intricacies of pediatric cancer care and long-term treatment effects; Enhance the health and well being of our pediatric patients through a family-centered approach. Bring people together to raise funds and awareness for children with cancer and other chronic illnesses. During Terrie’s presentation she mentioned that over 14,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. Cancer is the #1 disease killer of children. Pediatric cancer causes more deaths than asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and pediatric aids combined. Pediatric cancer research receives about 30 cents per dollar less than breast cancer research. Foundation gift card programs help families with pharmacy co-pays, gas, groceries, and clothing. The foundation also helps with un-paid utility bills, medical expenses, medical supplies. The signature program of the Michael Magro Foundation is helping children on cancer treatment return to school. Since the Michael Magro Foundation started they have raised over

One of the ongoing programs is The Life Essentials Program which brings restaurant, supermarket, gas station, toy stores, Target, WalMart, and so many more gift cards to families. The foundation has an account with a pharmacy in Mineola to help pay for medications not covered by insurance as well as helping families with co-payments. The Michael Magro Foundation transportation program helps families who do not drive get car service back and forth to treatment instead of using public transportation. Terrie Magro is a graduate of Molloy College in Rockville Centre with a BS in Nursing. After graduation Terrie started her clinical career at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn. While working at St. Francis, Terrie registered at New York University in a Masters of Nursing program. Upon her graduation in 1981, she continued working at SFH and accepted an adjunct faculty position in the undergraduate nursing department at Adelphi University. In 1983 Terrie married Paul Magro a chef, culinary instructor and author of a book entitled “Cooking, Dining, Dreaming a Culinary Journey. Terrie and Paul have two children, Michael who was born in 1990 and Marc in 1993. In 2006, Terrie was selected by Town Of Oyster Bay for “Women Of Distinction Award”. In January 2010, Terrie was recognized by Long Island Press Fortune 52 honoring Long Island women who make a significant, unique and lasting contribution to their communities. Woodland Elementary School PTA selected Terrie for their Honary Life Award in June 2010. The Michael Magro Foundation was named the 2010 Honoree for the Cancer Center For Kids 2010 Black and White Ball which was held at Oheka Castle last April. In addition to these awards, Terrie advocates for the Michael Magro Foundation speaking to groups about their mission which is dedicated to helping families through financial hardships associated with pediatric illnesses. She has participated in multiple radio shows, spreading the word of the foundations work.

A total of 39 Boy Scouts and family members from Troop 343 (Hauppauge) and Troop 3 (Smithtown) participated in the Troop 343 Family Fishing Trip aboard the Osprey V out of Port Jefferson on Saturday, July 13th, from 4:30 p.m. to dark. After leaving the Port Jefferson marina, the crew of the Osprey V took the scouts and their family members into the beautiful Long Island Sound in search of Porgies. A number of firsts were achieved this evening – for some, it was their first fishing trip, for some it was their first time in the Long Island Sound, and for some it marked their first catch! Quite a few Porgies were caught, and in fact the largest fish caught was not a Porgy but Sea Bass, Fluke, Sea Robins and even a Sand Shark (even though not all were “keepers”). A number of scouts
were able to move towards completion of requirements for the Fishing Merit Badge (headed by scouting parent/Fishing Merit Badge Counselor Ron Moe) as they caught and assisted in cleaning their fish, as well as were able to identify the type of fish as well as to name and explain five safety practices you should always follow while fishing (including explain how to remove a hook that has lodged in your arm, should this ever happen), discussed the differences between two types of fishing outfits and to identify the parts of several types of rods and reels (fresh and salt water equipment), and also how and when each would be used, as well as how to care for this equipment. An interesting mix of weather included fog, sun and clouds, but the rain held off and all had a good time.

One Last Look By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As an editor, it would stand to reason that I have a bit of a pet peeve when it comes to misspelled words and poor grammar. But understandably, everyone makes mistakes from time to time. Lately, though, it seems that these errors have been featured front and center on a number of occasions. First, there was the faux pas of Hempstead School District’s “Summer Reading List,” which included such literary classics as The Great Gypsy, The Canterbury Tale and The Lovely Bone, as well as works by such esteemed authors as Charlotte Bonte (Jane Eyre) and George Ornell (Animal Farm). As many newspapers and social media sites jumped all over the errors, the sense of irony was overwhelming – a
document designed to promote literacy among the youth, seemingly put together by someone who could have used a couple more years fine-tuning his/her English skills… and this generated by one of the poorest performing districts on Long Island. Perhaps it was merely a test to see how many people would pick out the mistakes? And then, just last week came this: a new sign on the Robert Moses Causeway directing drivers to “Jonse” Beach. The sign was hung recently on the southbound side, causing many drivers to do a double take. Clearly, most residents can manage to overlook the typo in locating one of the nation’s most popular, landmark beaches – but that’s not the point. Wouldn’t someone glance at such a giant structure before displaying it? Or are massive
roadside signs exempt from the proofreading process? Although, come to think of it, I actually had my own such experience with a misspelled sign back in high school, when the school district commissioned their annual display saluting the year’s Valedictorian, Salutatorian and other such honors. My excitement at seeing my name painted on the giant wooden signs marking both ends of town was slightly marred when we drove by to see the following on graduation morning: Valedictorian ~ Jamie Lee Ryan. Just a word to the wise – the bigger the structure, and the more publicly distributed the document, the more “second looks” (and third, and fourth) any wording should be given. (As I re-read this column one more time!)

Mr. John MacPherson, Regional Liason from The College of New Jersey, explored the topics of letters of recommendations and the importance of the college entrance essay. Mr. George M. Zimmerman, Assistant Director
of Admissions from Binghamton University, shared information on ACT and SAT’s and scholarship information. At the end of the program, Ingrid Hrvatin, Director of Guidance, welcomed questions from the audience. The program was well attended and the students and their parents received a first-hand account of what the college admissions representatives are looking for in future applications.
Eminent Domain: Friend Or Foe?
Eminent Domain is arguably an attack on the rights of American citizens. It seems unfair that the government can just force a family out of their home. Sure, they offer a small sum of money to cushion the grief, but is it really adequate compensation? Our government claims to buyout the houses at market value, but with the economy in shambles as it is, market value is poor. In my town, on Fire Island, you can refuse the buyout. You can simply say no to the puny sum offered to you. But if you do so, the government reserves the right to just take your house in the event of another disaster. If your
house gets more than fifty percent damaged in the future, you can kiss your home goodbye. After refusing this buyout, your insurance rates would skyrocket. Why do we accept the fact that the government controls this facet of our lives? Some of the members of my town are doing everything we can to make sure our homes stay intact through the winter. We are dropping thousands
of dollars on “trap bags,” which promise to naturally build up a dune and protect our little town. Beach Scraping is also an option, albeit a short-term solution. These small scale projects are doubtfully going to give us adequate protection from Mother Nature. In actuality, we do not need this protection from the elements; we need it from the government. When my mother came to America thirty-five years ago, she was not expecting to be at the mercy of the government, she was expecting total freedom. Eminent Domain contradicts those freedoms promised to us all.

This year marked the 10th anniversary of Mrs. Veronica Weeks’ fifth grade students at Hauppauge School District’s Bretton Woods Elementary School’s involvement with the Bobwhite Quail Restoration Project. The goal of the Project is to restore the quail population to a selfsustaining level while educating the community
about wildlife and the environment. This year, Ms. Weeks’ class – along with Mrs. Palmieri – incubated 100 quail eggs in the classroom. They achieved an “exceptional” 80 percent hatch rate. The quail were kept in brooders for several weeks in the classroom and then were brought to Caleb Smith State Park where they stayed in pens
until they were released ceremoniously on June 29th. “There was a huge turnout and it was very exciting to see more than 500 quail march out into their new habitat,” described Weeks. “It was a very educational and rewarding project for my students.”

Scholarship Luncheon Honorees
Local Long Island Environmental Consulting and Engineering Firm, P.W. Grosser Consulting
held their annual luncheon honoring the 2013 PWGC Scholarship Program winners.
PWGC established these scholarships for local high school students looking to purse a future career in the
engineering field. In the past several years, the PWGC scholarship program has awarded over $5,000 in scholarships to students who are continuing their education. These scholarships help pave the way for these bright young students from diverse backgrounds to excel in the engineering profession, which will ultimately benefit us all. Each year, PWGC requires an essay with every application; all of the winner’s essays were informative, well written and contained creative ideas. PWGC is very pleased to announce the 2013 Scholarship
recipients: · (First Place) Shelby Guercio from Sachem High School North will be awarded a $750.00 scholarship. Shelby will attend Temple University this Fall studying Geology. Shelby is ranked 26th out of a class of 522, has a GPA of 98.74 and was awarded the following: Science National Honor Society Chapter, AP Scholar with Honor Award, and National Honor Society. · (Runner-Up) Matthew Bracco from Smithtown High School West was awarded a $500.00 scholarship. Matthew will attend Virginia Tech Fall studying General
Engineering. Matthew has a GPA of 4.14 and was awarded the following: AP Scholar with Honor Award, National Honor Society, Italian Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society and is an Eagle Scout. · (Runner-Up) Kristen Malec from West Babylon High School was awarded a $500.00 scholarship. Kristen will attend the University of Connecticut this Fall studying Civil Engineering. Kristen is ranked 79th out of a class of 344, has a GPA of 95.21 and was awarded membership into the National Honor Society.
