New Construction Underway Stony Brook University broke ground recently on Phase I of the new 759-room student housing facilities and 60,000-square-foot dining center located on Toll Drive. Scheduled to be completed by fall 2016, the new development will offer additional residential options for upperclassman, and bring the total oncampus housing inventory to more than 10,300
beds, making Stony Brook University the largest campus housing program in SUNY. (Phase II is anticipated to start construction in December this year.) The new facility on John S. Toll Drive, will feature two modern buildings. Phase I will consist of a 303 bed residence hall and Phase II with 456

Village employees and local Boy Scouts served residents hamburgers, hot dogs, ice cream, soda and water. Children enjoyed the day with hayrides, games, pony rides, a petting zoo, arts and crafts, face painting, piñatas and a dunk tank. A local DJ provided the music to keep the party going. Local elected officials were also in attendance. In addition, Mayor Allan M. Dorman hosted a blueberry pie eating contest, with the winners each getting a blueberry pie.

The Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to announce its 36th Annual Juried Fine Art Exhibition to be held August 23rd through September 27th at the Mills Pond House Gallery, 660 Route 25A, St. James, NY. The public is invited to an opening reception on Saturday, August 23rd, from 2 to 4 p.m. to meet the participating artists and view their work. This year’s juror is Denise Bibro of Denise Bibro Fine Art, Inc., a contemporary gallery in Chelsea NYC representing an eclectic mix of emerging and established artists. Ms. Bibro selected 60 works from 45 artists for the exhibition. About the juror: Denise Bibro began exhibiting the work of a diverse group of contemporary artists in corporate and alternative spaces in 1980. After showcasing work at her art salon in Union Square, 1987, she saw the opening of her first gallery in SoHo. Denise Bibro Fine Art moved to its current Chelsea location in 1997, and encompasses the main gallery as well as a project space, Platform, providing over 4,000

The summer solstice opens upon her arrival, evaporating the morning’s dew. The rays of sun awaken by her movement, comforting the Earth with her warmth. All the living turn their heads to bask in her warm embrace. The plants mature in her wake, learning the meaning of life. The menacing clouds take over, their footsteps in sync. Like soldiers they march on and on, without pause. They throw spears of light down showing their force, watching for reactions. Some mortals cower in fear, while some dare to stand against it. Like an olive branch extended, tendrils of pinks and purples streak the sky, tearing the blue. Good wins over evil, a predetermined win. Like a spell cast everything lies tranquil, waiting to dance with the stars. Her sudden temper flares, rolling down her back in waves. Her teardrops comes in waterfalls, mingling with the mundane. Fierce is her reign, until scolded by Father Time. Like a child in the corner, she loses her grip. At the end, summers right hand man, sets in a fiery blaze.

Make A Wish By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s that special time of year again – well, special to me – three days until my birthday, the so-called “reset button” that comes around once every 365 days to remind me that, yes, I am one entire year older and (hopefully) just a little wiser. Some people seem to dread such milestones, seeing them as unnecessary celebrations, just another day on the calendar to cast aside. Of course, there are also those who feel the occasion should be acknowledged as some sort of national holiday… Me, I
fall somewhere in between. It’s certainly nice to receive phone calls and text messages and Facebook greetings from those you seldom talk to otherwise, as well as to take the time to get together with family and close friends to celebrate. Why not? We spend more than enough of our time going through the motions of the daily grind. We deserve at least that much of a reprieve. As for getting older, age is, truly, nothing but a number. It’s a state of mind, dependent upon the person, the day of the week, the phase of the moon… and, considering I’ve been
mistaken for anywhere from 18 to 25 years old, it must be a characteristic that’s not necessarily apparent to others! We should all take a moment – even if it is, literally, just one moment – each year, on our respective birthdays, to acknowledge the fact that we are each special and important in our own little ways, within our own immediate circles, and that every year is but another opportunity to expand upon that imprint. We are all works in progress. So blow out the candles, make a wish, and celebrate the next step of the journey.

On July 17th, a presentation titled “Alzheimer’s Disease What You Need to Know” took place at the Jewish Center of the Hamptons in East Hampton. Guest speakers included Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC), and Susan L. Solomon, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder, and Dr. Scott Noggle, Charles Evans Senior Research Fellow for Alzheimer’s Disease, The New York Stem Cell Foundation. In her presentation, Ms. Malack-Ragona discussed
the facts and myths surrounding Alzheimer’s disease. Other topics included the warning signs of AD, updates on local research and national research, the essentials of long-term care planning and how ADRC can assist local families. Ms. Solomon and Dr. Noggle updated those in the audience on the latest research involving stem cells in finding a cure for AD. In addition to her work with NYSCF, Ms. Solomon is a founding member and current President of NYAMR (New Yorkers for the Advancement of Medical Research) and a member of the Strategic

For the second year, the Art League of Long Island was awarded a grant to provide a series of art education workshops for people served by the nonprofit Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities (ACLD). About one Sunday afternoon each month, ACLD’s adult clients have learned to create mixed media, charcoal drawings, watercolor, pastel, colored pencil, acrylic painting, and printmaking. An exhibition of student work created in these workshops will be on display in the Art League of Long Island’s Strolling Gallery August 5th through September 2nd, with a reception on August 15th from 6 to 8 p.m. The Sunday workshop series and exhibition of student artwork is made possible with funds from the Decentralization
Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and is administered by The Huntington Arts Council, Inc. In addition to the Sunday sessions, funding provided by the Women’s Group of the Greens of Melville and Bahama Breeze Island Grille in Lake Grove offers additional workshops for ACLD’s clients on Thursday evenings, providing more opportunities for these budding artists to hone their artistic skills. ACLD is a leading notfor-profit agency on Long Island that proudly serves the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. On August 5th, members of the Smithtown HuntKennel Club were on hand for an open house at the Woodhull House in Wading River. During the event, visitors were encouraged to meet the dogs and learn about what they do and how they are trained. The open house was hosted by the club which maintains kennels on the property. Dating back to 1720,
the Josiah Woodhull House, located at 170 North Country Road in Shoreham, is an important cultural and historic landmark for Shoreham/ Wading River and the surrounding communities. Donated to Brookhaven Town in 2002, the house is located in the Long Island North Shore Heritage Area and listed on the National Register of Historic Places

In addition to its age, the historic significance of the house is due in part to the fact that it was owned by the grandson of Richard Woodhull, one of the founders of the Town of Brookhaven. On Saturday, August 16th, community residents are invited to continue their summer cleaning with a special e-waste and paper-shredding event, held at the Setauket Main Street Firehouse, located at 190 Main Street in Setauket. From 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., community members may bring any e-waste or documents that need to be shredded for proper disposal. Items considered e-Waste include: TV’s, VCR & DVD players, computer
mice, printers, calculators, hard drives, electronic typewriters, circuit boards, projectors, camcorders, laptops, power supplies, radios/stereos, servers, backup batteries, PDAs, mainframes, pagers, monitors, routers, telephones, scanners, cell phones, answering machines, radios/stereos, servers, backup batteries, hubs, modems, fax machines, keyboards, copiers, cables, Gameboys and other handheld electronic toys. According to the Town
of Brookhaven, which is sponsoring the event, documents brought in for shredding will be dumped into a 65-gallon container and then into the shredder, enabling each participant to witness the secure destruction of sensitive papers. Paper can be brought in boxes or bags. Documents can remain stapled together, but paper clips and other metal must be removed along with any other contaminants such as rubber bands.
E-Waste & Shredding Event Thirty-nine Scouts, seventeen which recently joined the Troop and 7 adult leaders spent July 27th-August 2nd camping at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. It was a perfect week for swimming, canoeing, kayaking and sailing. In addition to the waterfront activities, scouts were able to enjoy the rifle and archery ranges as well as a rock climbing wall. The Troop was victorious in various camp matches including ultimate frisbee, canoe
swamporee, and the water carnival games. Scouts Nick G. and Scott E. also won first place in week four of the summer long shooting competition. In addition to all the fun activities, the scouts completed 165 merit badges. Merit badges earned included First Aid, Cooking, Wilderness Survival, Small Boat Sailing, Nature and Space Exploration. Summer camp was a great conclusion for a terrific year of scouting for many
of our younger Scouts. Many of the Troop’s older Scouts will be participating in high adventure trips later this month. 11 scouts and 5 adult leaders will be hiking in the mountains of New Mexico at the Philmont Scout Ranch. Bradstock Set Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck will be presenting Bradstock XXI, a two-day festival featuring live music and poetry that will be taking place on Saturday, August 30th, from noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday, August 31st from noon to 9 p.m. Now in its 21st year, Bradstock is an all-day music festival featuring the best musical acts performing Americana, bluegrass, blues, reggae, jams, funk, rock and jazz. Among those who will be performing include Cassandra House, Gerry McKeveney, Soundswell,
Jack’s Waterfall, Miles to Dayton, Jerry McDonald, Ed Travers, Shecky and the Twangtones, David Amram, Funkin’A, Jelly Band, Falco Brothers and The Electrix. In addition, there will be a Poetry Stage featuring the area’s finest and most diverse poets and a Folk and Songwriters’ stage featuring the best local musical talent. Tickets are $35 for the first day ($45 day of event), $50 for the second day ($60 day of event) and $80 for both days. Prices include admission to the festival. Cash will only be accepted
for ticket purchases on the days of the event. Ticket prices do not include tax. For $125 plus tax, concertgoers can purchase the Platinum package ahead of the event. This includes admission to both days of the festival (including overnight camping on Saturday), a Bradstock T-shirt, backstage access and more. Camping sites and T-shirts are limited, so early registration is strongly recommended. In the event that there are remaining tickets, they can be purchased at the door
for $150 (plus tax). Tickets for Saturday’s festival and the 5K Trail Run are available for $40 plus tax when purchased by August 22nd, $50 on the day of registration (cash only). VIP Platinum members who register on the day of the race pay $5 (cash only). The race begins at 8:30 a.m. All entrants receive a commemorative Bradstock mug. Part of the ticket sales will go to benefit Camp PaQua-Tuck. Over the past four years, Bradstock has raised over $30,000 for the camp.
The music festival has a special connection to the camp as the late Kevin “K.C.” Cowan — who performed at every single Bradstock event with his band, K.C. and The Love Drops, before his passing on October 2011 — was the brother-in-law of Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve
equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. Standing Up For The Homeless The Long Island Campus of St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it will provide a venue for the seventh annual Stand Up for the Homeless event, sponsored by the Office of the Suffolk County Executive, on Friday, August 29th, in the John A. Danzi Athletic Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is the sixth year that the event will be held at the College. “Dedicated to fostering committed participation in its local and global communities, St. Joseph’s College is pleased to once again host this valuable community initiative in conjunction with the County Executive’s Office,” said Jack P.
