While drive-in theaters are staging a comeback across the country, Starfish Junction is positioning itself as one of the leaders here on Long Island. Future showings will include movies perfect for date nights, family fun nights, girl’s night out, sing-alongs, and classic films. There are a limited number of tickets available for each showing. Tickets are on sale now ($40 per carload) and must be purchased online in advance at the MOVIE LOT website to adhere to the promise of contactless processing. Animal Food Drive Sweetbriar Nature Center Animal Food Drive is ongoing this summer!!! The facility is in need of donations of fruits and vegetables for the many animals rehabilitating in their care. Most needed items are unsalted nuts and non-perishables, baby food, Cheerios, tuna in water, oat bran and shelled nuts. Hospitalman Dylan Hans, a native of Commack, is playing a critical role in the U.S. Navy’s efforts to maintain a healthy and ready fighting force in the face of the Coronavirus pandemic. As a hospital corpsman working at Navy Medical Readiness and Training Command Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Hans’ skills are vital to maintaining the health of the sailors in the Caribbean area, and by extension, the readiness of the Navy’s operational ships and submarines on which they serve. “The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Pandemic brought an invisible enemy to our shores and changed the way we operate as a Navy,” said Adm. Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations. “The fight against this virus is a tough one, but our sailors are tougher. We must harden our Navy by continuing to focus on the health and safety of our forces and our families. The health and safety of our sailors and their families is, and must continue to be, our number one priority.” Hans is a 2016 Commack High School graduate. According to Hans, the values required to succeed in the Navy are similar to

in the Navy. Navy Hospital Corpsmen have earned 22 Medals of Honor, 179 Navy Crosses, 959 Silver Stars and more than 1,600 Bronze Stars. Twenty ships have been named in honor of corpsmen. In its century of service, the U.S. Navy Hospital Corps has supported millions of sailors and Marines in wartime and peace around the world. As the years have progressed, technological innovations are transforming medical training for the next generation of hospital corpsmen, according to Navy officials. “The legacy of that of a Navy Hospital Corpsman is truly remarkable being how versatile we are,” Hans said.” Thousands of men and women, all with different specialties and jobs, ultimately aiding in just one mission, and that is to help others. I’m proud to be a part of that unstoppable team!” As a member of the U.S. Navy, Hans, as well as other sailors, know they are a part of a service tradition that dates back centuries. Their efforts, especially during this time of challenge brought on by the Coronavirus, will have a lasting effect around the globe and for generations of sailors who provide the Navy the nation needs.

Armor Museum Opens With COVID-19 Protocols And A Motivational “Call To Arms” From World War II How to motivate visitors to maintain social distancing upon entering the Museum of American Armor? The Armor Museum has enlisted the Army. The Museum of American Armor, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, has teamed up with Dr. Erik Villard, Digital Military Historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History, to present his innovative reinvention of motivational posters first created by the War Department during World War II. From G.I.s prepared to throw hand sanitizers (as opposed to hand grenades), to a masked Uncle Sam leading a charge against COVID, the posters will be situated throughout the museum, adjacent to its tanks, artillery pieces, and uniformed mannequins. Dr. Villard explained, “I already have a massive collection of these posters. I just looked through them and thought, ‘Okay, which ones could be modified, so that they keep something of the original spirit, but would be applicable to the

Museum of American Armor founder and president, Lawrence Kadish, stated, “We are following all the CDC protocols which allowed the museum to open on July 31st, but we wanted to make sure that our visitors’ behavior remained the first line of defense against spreading COVID-19. Smithtown HS West Side Pride Shines During Commencement It may not have been the ceremony they had envisioned when picturing their graduation, but the Smithtown High School West Class of 2020 still had a chance to celebrate their accomplishments in smaller, more intimate commencement exercises on July 21 and 22. During the two-day period, the school held eight small ceremonies to keep to social distancing limitations. Two guests were permitted to accompany each graduate on the football field. As the graduates marched onto the field to “Pomp and Circumstance,” they were greeted by their guests who were seated on the field with them. After Smithtown High School West Principal John Coady welcomed the graduates and their families, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Mark Secaur addressed the students. “Resilience is defined as the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties,” he said. “We know that success depends on our individual and collective ability to recover from difficult situations. This ability will allow you to confidently address adversity in future settings.” Honor speaker Luke Muratore spoke to his classmates about their

resilience during the pandemic and how they rose above as a class together. “We, the Smithtown West Class of 2020, are the class known for strength and adversity rather than social media trends and senior pranks,” he said. “The class known for our unique celebrations rather traditional senior perks. We have gone through the worst of a global pandemic. We are about to enter a world completely different than the one we are comfortable with. If we enter it fearless and willing to learn about and from each other, we will better ourselves and thrive in the everchanging world around us.” Senior class president Meghan Deery addressed the Class of 2020 and spoke about their West side pride. “During this pandemic, we saw the saying ‘Smithtown Strong’ come to fruition; our powerful sense of community has proven to guide us during times of tragedy and loss,” she said. “Our displays of altruism lessened those fears of worry and danger. Throughout this hardship, we have learned to manage worry and not let it consume us. We worried about prom and panicked about graduation but in the end, this worry was

crushed by positivity and love. This ceremony may not have been exactly what we expected, but it’s special in its own way. We made it through the worst together but we have only grown stronger. We know how to overcome. We do it with pride and support. We do it with positivity and love.” The last four months have undoubtedly been a challenge for the senior class, said Mr. Coady, but they have shown their true strength during this time. “The close of your career at Smithtown has been a turbulent time with much sadness and loss,” he said. “During the last four months, we have seen the amazing true character of our student body. TAKING A LOOK BACK! In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below: Rebuilding Together L o n g Island is a non-profit 5 0 1 ( c ) ( 3 ) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economically-disadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons).

Together Long Island has become a well-regarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are a few main ways you can get involved with their organization:

1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects.
