nce again, a robust crowd gathered at the Nesconset Gazebo last Tuesday night to see the week’s show put on by the Beach Boys tribute band, The Driftwoods, which was sponsored by Legislator Leslie Kennedy and the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce. A First Impression, Again Say what you will about the drawbacks of social media, the tendency to over-share, the impersonal nature of “connecting” remotely, but, sometimes, such an avenue can prove vital in reconnecting with those we may have crossed paths with in a previous stage of life. Such has been the case through the years, as Facebook “friends” have accumulated faster than my ability to keep up with them, at least in any sort of personal, meaningful way. What began as an attempt

to build a somewhat professional network of contacts in the journalism industry quickly morphed into an avalanche of high school and college friends, fellow dance students and work colleagues. Somehow lost in the mix were those old acquaintances that you, quite simply, just never got to know well enough to develop any sort of deeper friendship. You may have traveled in neighboring circles, shared common life experiences, but failed to make the leap beyond the preconceived notions that often cloud our youth.

First impressions last a lifetime, or so they say; but the advantage of adulthood is that, sometimes, we have the presence of mind to take a step back, take stock of the situation and reevaluate. Such is one of the benefits of social media – second chances. The opportunity to get to know someone, truly, is a rare gift that should be accepted, and savored. So the next time you’re on Facebook, take a closer look at the hundreds of profile pictures staring back at you. You just never know whom you might meet… again.

A multitude of people gathered recently to hear the Queen tribute band Almost Queen play at the Nesconset Gazebo. As always, the community showed up with goods to donate to Long Island Cares and Operation Care Package to help those in need in the

community and to support our troops who sacrifice everything for this country. In order to kick off the concert, Alessio Farina did the honors of singing our National Anthem. Alessio is a student of Brooklyn College training to be an opera singer, and did a beautiful rendition of The

Star Spangled Banner. Almost Queen was a crowd favorite, and was greatly enjoyed by those who braved the heat and humidity to listen to them play. As always, they were enthused to play before the packed crowd in Nesconset.

Promoting Safety The Huntington YMCA recently opened its doors to Kim and Stew Leonard, Jr. as they read their children’s book “Stewie the Duck Learns to Swim” to over 300 campers, ages 3-8 years old. The YMCA of Long Island partnered with Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities in an effort to continue to further spread awareness about water

safety and healthy living. The YMCA of Long Island and Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities share a commitment to keeping children safe around water. The foundation’s mascot, Stewie the Duck, made a special guest appearance, giving hugs, high fives and stickers to campers. In 1989, Kim and Stew Leonard, Jr. tragically lost their 21-month old son

to a drowning accident. The following year, Kim and Stew founded Stew Leonard III Children’s Charity and have since raised over $2 million to go towards water safety education for children and parents. The very first Long Island Stew Leonard’s location is set to open in Farmingdale in early 2016.

Prevention Training

PROMOTING SAFETY - Stew Leonard, Jr. and Stewie the Duck wave in a sea of campers and counselors at the Huntington YMCA after reading “Stewie the Duck Learns to Swim,” to promote water safety education. The YMCA of Long Island and Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities share similar missions in keeping children safe around water.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES adult nursing students received training from Senior Public Health Educator John Martin and Clinical Nurse Practitioner Laura Giardino on how to recognize an opioid overdose, administer intranasal NARCAN, and what steps to take until EMS arrive. At the conclusion of the training, each nursing student received a certificate of completion and an emergency resuscitation kit that included NARCAN. NARCAN is an opioid antagonist that prevents or reverses the effects of opioids. Program Administrator for Health Sciences Debra Epilone, R.N., said, “This was an important training opportunity for our nursing students to

learn how to administer NARCAN. As future nurses and community members, having this knowledge empowers them to save a life. This is a very important initiative.” NARCAN is not a treatment. “It is a second chance drug. It can save a person who has overdosed on an opiate a chance to live one more day,” said John Martin. In January of 2015, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone unveiled more initiatives to fight heroin and opiate overdoses. An awareness program was unveiled that targeted users in the Suffolk County court system who were saved by NARCAN. “It’s an epidemic. That’s why EMS, Suffolk County First Responders,

and police officers are all trained to administer NARCAN,” said John Martin. With New York State funds and training provided through the New York State Department of Emergency Medical Health Education, community members also have the opportunity to be trained. Martin added, “Every overdose is someone’s mother, father, daughter, or son. The training takes about an hour, the admission of the drug is through a mucosal atomization device (MAD), and there are no side effects at all.” Carla Bonilla, a second year nursing student from Brentwood, comes from a family of nurses. She said, “I feel that with this knowledge, I could save someone’s life.”

Nation Night Out Against crime was hosted at Target in Commack last Tuesday evening. This was a gathering for the community to come out and meet their local law enforcement officers, as well as armed services and fire personnel. Legislator Leslie Kennedy ame out to support this effort to help law enforcement officers work more efficiently with and for the community

they serve. It was a family friendly night complete with a bounce house, a dunk tank, and finger printing for the kids. It was an excellent opportunity for the youth of the community to meet with the officers charged with protecting our safety in Suffolk County and abroad. Leslie Kennedy met with members of the Suffolk County Police Department,

Suffolk county Fire Rescue, as well as the Police Explorers, a program for the youth interested in law enforcement. “I think this is a great idea, the community and the police force need to work together to prevent crime, and our children need to know that the police are here to help them.” said Leslie Kennedy.

Volunteers Needed The 2015 Long Island Heart Walk is right around the corner. Next month we’ll be lacing up our sneakers and heading to this year’s event! The route is planned, food and entertainment are being secured and excitement is building. Preparing for an event of this size takes lots of planning and requires lots of help. The American Heart Association relies on volunteers to help make sure the day is picture perfect. They are looking for volunteers to

help at this year’s Long Island Heart Walk event on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at Jones Beach. There are lots of jobs to do and lots of people needed to do it. Volunteer positions include day before event set up, day of event set up, registration, helping in the food tent (morning and afternoon), route rally, water station, finish line cheer squad and event clean up. If you are interested in volunteering for any of these areas, or know someone (or a group)
