Summer Games Kickoff

he Summer Olympics Games started a day early in Smithtown Central School District as students enrolled in the summer program at Smithtown Elementary School competed in a variety of field day activities on August 4th. Dressed in red, white and blue, students proudly carried their handmade torches, crowns and banners to the field. The competitors spent the morning having fun, while also testing their athletic abilities.

Of Birthdays & Bedtimes Well, dear readers, the calendar pages have just ﬂown on by, landing on August – my Human’s birthday month, and, more importantly, my 18-month adoption anniversary. Seeing as I didn’t come with an official birth certificate, no one can be quite certain of my precise age, but we’ll assume I’ve been ﬂitting around for at least a solid two years at this point. Not too shabby. My fins, on the other hand… Ah, but enough about me. My Human, so I’ve read, is hard at work on compiling a collection of her finest columns. Of course, I’m only interested in those that bear my name and stunning photo, but I suppose her accomplishments deserve a little recognition as well. Just a little. As long as I get a side book deal out of it.

On another note, I think I may have been a bit hasty in ushering out my tank mate, Squeegee. Since his untimely (“accidental”) demise, my bowl has become increasingly overrun by algae build-up – on the rocks, the gravel, even my favorite plant leaf. My Human keeps unceremoniously dumping me into my original oh-so-tiny bowl while she cleans and rinses and dries the contents of my suite, but to no avail. Only a week or so later, and it’s time for another complete overhaul. Where’s my little vacuum snail when I need him?? Speaking of meals… I’ve decided that waiting for my ﬂakes to drop is simply too much trouble. Instead, I prefer to lunge out of the water the second I see so much as the shadow of my Human’s hand. It’s much faster that way. Plus,

it eliminates the possibility of my glorious fins accidentally swatting my ﬂakes to the ﬂoor, never to be seen again. Well, unless I happen to be napping between the leaves of my plant – then I occasionally come across a snack to munch on. I like to switch up my bedtime spot depending upon my mood. Currently, I can most often be found lying on top of the filter in the corner. I love to see the look on my Human’s face as she desperately searches for me. As if I could burrow down into the gravel and disappear… or can I? Such is the life of a fish. Eating, sleeping and plotting new activities to consume my days. I am quite entertaining, if I do say so myself. Now, as for my upcoming birthday… is it too late to ask for a new Squeegee?

A family Community Service Event was held on Monday, July 25th, at the Smithtown Landing Country Club, Lessing’s Catering facility in Smithtown, hosted by the Smithtown Youth Bureau, Youth Advisory Board, and Smithtown Departments of Recreation, Parks and Public Safety. Approximately 170 student and parent residents volunteered to assemble 210 “Ready for School Packets” which will be provided to all Township school districts for struggling youth & families. Student community service credit was provided. Postponed from the original July 18th date due to rain, this event was supposed to be a combined family community service event AND a pool party at the Smithtown Landing pool. Due to storms on the rain date, the postponed event had to be held

indoors. Lessing’s catering at the Smithtown Landing Country Club generously donated use of their beautiful Nissequogue Room to hold the event, since it was not “pool weather” that night. In addition to assembling the 210 “Ready for School” supply packets, students and families enjoyed complimentary music, pizza, watermelon and cookies. Since the pool was closed, a variety of games were organized by student members of the Town of Smithtown Youth Advisory Board. Everyone enjoyed the competitive games and prizes. Colleen Sambuco, a local balloon artist, and her husband John volunteered that night to make some beautiful balloon creations for the children to take home. Everyone left the event with the great feeling that they had helped out others in their community. This program was

primarily sponsored by the Town of Smithtown with additional donations from Target (Commack), Verizon Wireless (Smithtown), Huntington Learning Center and the Smithtown Children’s Foundation. Families will be identified confidentially by school social workers in Commack, Hauppauge, Kings Park, & Smithtown districts, as well as, through the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry, to receive the “Ready for School” supply packets in September. Additionally, the Youth Bureau will be providing FREE Commemorative Marble Notebooks to schools town-wide. The Smithtown Senior Citizens Department is pleased to announce that it offers in-home medical alert monitoring services to low and moderate income senior residents living in Smithtown Township. Voice Care clients simply wear an easy touch activator that can be worn as a pendant or on the wrist. When activated, professionally trained emergency operators respond 24/7 to help with any situation.

“Our objective with this personal emergency response system is to ensure the well being of our seniors and enable them to remain safely in their homes. Perhaps just as important is to provide seniors with the peace of mind knowing that if they ever need help they will get it,” according to Laura Greif, Program Director. Voice Care is an income and age eligible program that requires a brief inhome assessment. The service is available for a

low monthly monitoring fee of $18. There are no initiation fees, contracts or cancellation penalties. Funding for this program is provided by a federal grant from Housing and Urban Development awarded to the Town of Smithtown Community Development Department. the national anthem at the Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony for her two brothers and asked if she would consider doing something similar at the summer concerts and fortunately for us she agreed,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

The concerts are held each Thursday night at 8 p.m. on the front lawn of the Smithtown Library’s main branch through August 18th. The Sunrise Rotary also collects non-perishable food items and toiletries for the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry.

Summer Olympic Fun The Summer Olympics Games started a day early in Smithtown Central School District as students enrolled in the summer program at Smithtown Elementary School competed in a variety of field day activities on

August 4th. Dressed in red, white and blue, students proudly carried their handmade torches, crowns and banners to the field. The competitors spent the morning having fun, while also testing their athletic

The Annual Huntington Summer Arts Festival’s closing week is Tuesday, August 9th through Sunday, August 14th. The Art League of Long Island is pleased to announce the addition of teaching artist Lucas Sheridan to its roster of outstanding faculty members. Lucas Sheridan has been tapped to lead teens in the Summer Pre-College Portfolio as they fully immerse themselves in the creative process and build their portfolios for college. In the program, students experience professional studio practices as they develop the skills required to create a successful portfolio consisting of observational and figure drawing, painting, mixed media projects and additional mediums. Summer Pre-College Portfolio is one of three programs offered under

the umbrella of the Art League of Long Island’s Summer Design Program. The newly launched Architecture and Spatial Design program and Fashion FUNdamentals program introduce teens to these exciting fields in art and design. A gallery exhibit featuring works produced by the students participating in the entire Summer Design Program will take place August 13th through August 21st. The gallery exhibit concludes with an artist’s reception and fashion show on August 21st, from 1 to 3 p.m. Mr. Sheridan has been teaching at the Baccalaureate School of Global Education as an IB Studio Art Teacher and Curriculum Developer since 2011. Prior to the Baccalaureate school he was an Art Teacher and Curriculum Developer at the NYC Lab School. Sheridan earned his BFA in Drawing and Painting at Syracuse University and his MA in Art Education at Brooklyn College. His recent students have applied to and been accepted to a wide range
