Town of Smithtown Live Music Series The Town of Smithtown Administration and the Recreation Department recently kicked off its annual Summer Concert Season at Long Beach and Hoyt Farm. The food supply at food banks historically drops off in summertime. Coupled with the pandemic and its after-effects, replenishing the diminishing food supply at this time is even more urgent. Enter Power to Feed Long Island – a partnership between Island Harvest Food Bank and PSEG Long Island to rally the Long Island community to donate food to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Continuing through the end of September, there will be largescale collection drives at several local supermarkets, with a goal of restocking warehouse shelves with the equivalent of 21,000 nutritious meals (for 2021). The Animal Shelter has several kittens available for adoption, ranging in age from ten weeks old to sixteen weeks old. These adorable little beauties are very friendly and playful, and they would love nothing more than to grow up in a loving furrever home. All kittens adopted from us are spay/ neutered, parasite tested, microchipped, tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV, and started on their kitten vaccine series. Senator Mattera Works With Smithtown Leaders And NYSDOT To Enhance Travel For Residents Senator Mario R. Mattera (2nd Senate District) recently visited a stretch of Route 25A by St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center to view the repair work being done by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). Following calls from area residents about the stretch of road, Senator Mattera, Town Supervisor Ed Wehrheim, Superintendent Bob Murphy and Councilman Tom Lohmann worked jointly with the NYSDOT to find a solution. The NYSDOT quickly formulated a plan for this stretch of road and began work as soon as feasible given weather challenges. Senator Mattera travelled to the location to thank the NYSDOT for their rapid action on the damaged roadway as well as to show their appreciation for the hardworking men and women who were making the repairs to the site. “I thank the NYSDOT

for quickly remedying this important piece of our infrastructure. They listened to the concerns of the residents and the calls from those representing the area and that is how government should always work. Most importantly, I am deeply appreciative of the hardworking men and women of Operating Engineers Local 138, Laborers Local 1298 and the NYSDOT who spent hours during our recent hot stretch working to make life and our roadways better for our residents,” stated Senator Mattera. “Hopefully, this will allow the residents of the community sleep well and enjoy their homes in peace and quiet!” “Thanks to the efforts of Senator Mattera and the New York State Department of Transportation, the residents of this area will have an easier and safer drive through their community. This roadway has been a continuing issue

for everyone in Smithtown and this action will help ease the concerns of those who travel through here including those going to and from St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center,” stated Superintendent Murphy. “After receiving numerous complaints from residents in the Town of Smithtown regarding the deplorable road conditions along Route 25A from St Johnland Rd. to Saint Catherine’s hospital, we reached out to Superintendent of Highway Robert Murphy and New York State Senator Mario Mattera. Senator Mattera took the ball and worked with representatives from the New York State DOT and together were able to add this much needed work to their schedule,” added Councilman Lohmann. “I want to thank Senator Mattera, Superintendent Murphy and the members of the New York State DOT on a job well done!”

The check for over $1600 was the result of a Battle of the Towns fundraiser organized by the Recreation Department back in March.

Town Supervisor Ed Wehrheim was joined by Town Clerk Vincent Puleo and Councilman Tom Lohmann on Thursday, July 15, to hand deliver a check to Pat Westlake at the Smithtown Food Pantry. The check for over $1600 was the result of a Battle of the Towns fundraiser organized by the Recreation Department back in March. Town employees and members of the public used the Kilter App in a 30 day fitness challenge against the Town of Riverhead. The proceeds from the event went to a cause of each Town’s choosing. The Town of Smithtown chose to donate proceeds to the Smithtown Food Pantry. “I want to thank the Recreation Department, under the leadership of Tom McCaffery, for their unique team building and health conscious idea which not only got us in shape for the Summer, but did some genuine good in the community. This was a fantastic effort made by many Town employees and residents alike. Town employees and Smithtown community members who registered for the event logged daily fitness routines from March 21st through April 19th, 2021. Healthy activities such as running, spinning, swimming, meditating, and even social activities like volunteering and advocacy were logged virtually, using the Kilter Fitness App each day. Points are earned every day for both personal and team scores. The Kilter Fitness App can be used for fundraising events like this or for personal health goals. News at the Smithtown

Food Pantry: Due to NYS restrictions, residents mailed monetary donations and gift cards to Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry (Post Office Box 1663, Smithtown, NY 11787) in lieu of dropping off supplies and goods, during the pandemic. Under the leadership of Pat Westlake, the Food Pantry was able to deliver hundreds of grocery store gift cards on a regular basis to local families in need, giving them the independence of food shopping on their own. Westlake plans to keep this popular method alive by creating a shopping experience at the Food Pantry. Legislator Trotta Commends Emerson Marin Meise Gaeta Brookhaven Lab Science Fair Winner

Due to COVID-19, the US Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Lab held its annual Elementary School Science Fair virtually. In the past, the winners displayed their science projects in the lobby of the Legislature’s building in Hauppauge for the Legislators and public to see during the General Meeting of the Legislature. It was also at this meeting, that the Legislators recognized by their respective students. Volunteer judges reviewed 184 science projects submitted by students in kindergarten through sixth grade. To qualify for this competition, students must win a science fair held at their school. Fort Salonga Elementary School third grader Emerson Marin Meise Gaeta earned first place in her division. She researched whether wearing a facemask with a frame

EMERSON MARIN MEISE GAETA could improve how well people hear when speaking through a mask. Emerson used a decibel meter to measure the loudness of the voice, and determined that it was easier to hear a person and to understand what they

were saying if they wore a hospital-type mask with a frame rather than a cloth mask. While flower lovers can invest in a flower press, other heavy objects also can be effective at pressing flowers. Start by choosing flowers that are either still in bud form or are freshly bloomed. Dry the flowers out as quickly as possible to prevent browning. Place the flower between two pieces of white, nontextured paper. Then place all

within the pages of a book. Depending on the size of the book, you may be able to press more than one flower at a time. Place other books on top to weigh down the book with the flowers inside. Change the moisture blotting sheets every few days. After two to three weeks, the flowers will be completely dry and flat. Remove the flowers carefully using tweezers or fingertips. Store the fresh flowers in a cool, dry place or consider framing them in a shadow box.
