(New York State School Music Association) twice during her time at SSCM. Theresa has been very involved in SSCM Parish, as well, volunteering at events like Breakfast with Santa and food collections for Parish Outreach, as well as serving as an altar server at SSCM for the past three years. Her involvement in SSCM’s Chess Club, Drama Club, performance in SSCM’s Shakespeare Festival troupe and the school’s Cross Country Team have made for a well-

rounded experience. With a $1,000 high school grant in her pocket, Theresa is excited to be attending St. John the Baptist High School in the fall, where she will continue to play the violin in SJB’s orchestra and join the school’s Cross Country Team. The young lady was on her feet quite a bit at SSCM’s Awards Ceremony, earning a Parents Association Scholarship, an award for Altar Service and one for Excellence in Music. The highlight of the day came when Theresa was named as the recipient of SSCM’s Cyrillian Award, a unique honor for the student hand-selected by SSCM’s Principal, Sister Susan Snyder, and based on all around academics and service. Theresa’s name will be added to the names of former recipients of the honor, on a commemorative plaque, which hangs in the halls of the school for posterity. We wish Theresa continued success and we look forward to her coming back to visit and sharing future successes!

A family Community Service Event was held on Monday, July 17th, at the Smithtown Landing Country Club, Lessing’s Catering facility in Smithtown, hosted by the Smithtown Youth Bureau, Youth Advisory Board, Smithtown Departments of Recreation, Parks and Public Safety, and additional sponsorship by TRUETOX Laboratories. Approximately 130 student and parent residents volunteered to assemble 250 “Ready for School Packets,” which will be distributed to struggling youth & families throughout the Township. In addition to serving as a wonderful opportunity

for family volunteerism, students received formal community service credit for their efforts. The evening began indoors at the beautiful Nissequogue Room, with space generously donated by Lessing’s Catering. After completing their community service activity and dinner, participants walked outside to the Town Pool facility for swimming and music, as well as, balloon creations and temporary tattoo stations. The pool was open exclusively for program participants. “Ready for School” supply packets will be distributed to families identified confidentially

by school social workers in Commack, Hauppauge, Kings Park and Smithtown districts, as well as, through the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry, Emergency Housing facilities and houses of worship. The program was a great success. Participants not only enjoyed quality “family time,” but left the event with the wonderful feeling that they had helped others in their community. They are looking for volunteers to deliver meals to the homebound elderly in the Smithtown community. Meals are delivered in the late morning each Monday through Friday and require as little as two

hours a week, one to four days per month. You can even choose to be a “backup” driver if your time is limited. Volunteers use their own vehicles and are reimbursed for mileage. Volunteer with a friend and share the experience! If

The second concert of the Nesconset Summer Concert series was held last Tuesday night at the Nesconset gazebo, it was a warm, humid night, but the community came out in full force to see The Stanton Anderson Band play. Spangled Banner, and she sang beautifully to a packed crowd. Little Miss Nesconset was back in action to help draw the fifty-fifty raffle ticket winner before the concert began. The Stanton Anderson Band, a band which has a long history here on Long Island, and has paved the way for the local music scene, played to an enthusiastic crowd.

For a quarter of a century, Star Island Yacht Club has been hosting its annual mid-summer sport fishing tournament: the Mako, Thresher & Tuna Tournament. Competition Co-Director School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) is pleased to appoint Smithtown resident Larry Toonkel as FIRST® Robotics Competition Co-Director. A longtime member of the program’s development council, Toonkel replaces former Co-Director Debra Winter, who resigned after the 2016-2017 season. Toonkel will call upon his experience in the fields of science and technology to work with current CoDirectors, David Johnson and Thomas Rosati, to assist with the day-to-day planning and management of the program and its associated events. In 2015, after more than 30 years at Northrop Grumman, where he held various managerial and supervisory positions related to project management, software engineering and process engineering, Mr. Toonkel retired and dedicated himself to SBPLI and FIRST® Long Island. His involvement with SBPLI is a direct result of a growing interest in science,

technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) initiatives, which he initially developed during his career with Northrop Grumman. In addition to serving as a member of the FIRST® Robotics Competition Development Council, Mr. Toonkel has also volunteered as a judge at the Long Island Regional for the past two years. Prior to working at Northrop Grumman, Mr. Toonkel also worked for the Atomic Energy Commission, the Department of Energy, and Graphic Scanning a small technology company involved in the design and development of cell phone networks. “We are very excited to have Larry step up into his new leadership position,” says SBPLI Executive Director Bertram Dittmar. “His dedication to the organization, in-depth knowledge of the FIRST® Robotics Competition and passion for FIRST® Robotics make him the perfect person to bring SBPLI and FIRST® Long Island into the future.” One of Mr. Toonkel’s

first tasks as Co-Director will be to help plan the 2018 FIRST® Robotics Long Island Regional Competition, which brings together approximately 50 Long Island teams, as well as visiting teams from around the country and the world. Mr. Toonkel will call on his experience as FIRST® Robotics Competition judge and Development Council member to plan the events, as well as the associated Kick-Off. “I am honored to be appointed as the newest FIRST® Robotics Competition Co-Director,” says Mr. Toonkel. “I am very excited to have an even more active role in planning the upcoming Long Island Regional. Announcing Bond Date The St. James Fire District Board of Commissioners has announced that a communitywide capital bond referendum vote will be held on Tuesday, September 19th, from 3 to 9 p.m. Voting will take place at the Jefferson Avenue firehouse, located at 221 Jefferson Ave. For residents who reside within Election District 79, voting will take place at the Fairfield at St. James. This referendum comes as a result of several years of research and planning to determine how to best serve the community now and into the future, given the vast infrastructural needs and safety hazards that are present at both firehouses in the district. “To put it simply, the way our fire district is currently operating is no longer the most efficient or safe way to serve the residents of our community,” said Lawrence Montrose, chairman of the board of fire commissioners. “Our district’s current configuration presents safety challenges for our volunteers who put their lives at risk to keep our community safe. It is our duty to keep them safe as well.” The firehouse at the intersection of Lake Avenue and Route 25A was built in 1922; the last major renovation was completed almost 50 years ago. The antiquated building can no longer house the majority of the district’s fire trucks or engines – in fact, only one truck is currently housed at that location. The location of the facility also presents significant safety challenges, given the volume of traffic at the intersection. “Traffic volumes and speeds in front of the firehouse have increased greatly over the years,” said Montrose. “Not only does this hamper our response time when the truck at that location must respond, but it threatens the safety of our volunteers and those passing by at the time of a call.”

The district’s second firehouse, located on Jefferson Avenue, also has a number of significant infrastructural challenges. The firehouse suffered a flood last August, rendering sections of the building nearly useless to volunteers and forcing the district to operate out of a temporary structure on the property. Following the flood, engineer and architect reviews of the facility revealed that the building has numerous structural issues, some of which existed prior to the flooding. In addition, the layout of the Jefferson Avenue property presents other safety challenges for volunteers. “Our volunteers ‘gear up’ in one building but must cross the parking lot to board the trucks in another building,” said Montrose. “At the same time, other volunteers are entering the parking lot, creating a major safety issue.” The proposed plan calls for the consolidation of all fire services through the construction of a new facility on the existing Jefferson Avenue property. A new, centralized building will not only alleviate the safety concerns that currently exist, but will also allow the district to efficiently serve the community well into the future. The building would feature spaces that could be converted into accommodations for members and the community during storms or other major emergencies, and would also house a large meeting room for department meetings and community use. The proposed building would fully comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and facilitate improved traffic flow onto Woodlawn Avenue during emergency responses. Additionally, through green spaces and design, the new facility would protect the neighborhood feel of the current property and remain unobtrusive to surrounding homes. The cost of the proposed plan is $12.25 million. Based on current

market conditions, for a home with an assessed value of $3,000, the estimated increase in fire district taxes would be approximately $118 a year. For a home assessed at $4,000, the project equates to an annual increase of $158, while a home assessed at $5,000 would see an increase of approximately $198 a year. “While we are mindful of any increase in fire district taxes to our community, we believe this plan is fiscally responsible,” said Montrose. “If we do not consolidate our services and merely renovate the existing Jefferson Avenue facility, it would cost us an estimated $10.6 million. The safety issues present with the property layout would still exist. For $1.6 million more, we are able to construct an entirely new, 21st century structure that will allow us to serve the community in the best way possible for decades to come.” The fire district encourages all residents to learn the facts of what is being proposed through the capital improvement bond project. The district will host a public information hearing about the proposed plan on Tuesday, Aug. 29, from 7-9 p.m. at the Jefferson Avenue firehouse, located at 221 Jefferson Ave. The district will also host a number of open houses, during which residents are encouraged to see the conditions firsthand and ask any questions they have on the proposal. Open houses will be held on Saturday, September 9th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Thursday, September 14th, from 7 to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, September 17th, from 1 to 3 p.m., all at the Jefferson Avenue location. Motivation to be More Active Today’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one-third high school students play video games or computer games for three or more hours on an average school day. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school.

A funny thing happened on my last trip to the beach; rather, several amusingly bizarre things that left my friend and I shaking our heads in bewilderment and wondering if we were, in fact, part of some sort of candid camera exposé. On this particular afternoon, we literally sailed along the Robert Moses Causeway, over all three bridges, and were parked in less than 30 minutes - a record-breaking feat, to be sure, and a far improvement over the recent painstakingly slow bumper-to-bumper expeditions we have had to contend with. Amazed at this fortunate turn of events, we began to unload the car and make our way to the sand, when we noticed the deafening silence. Usually, the beach is filled with the sounds of children laughing and playing, radios blasting a cacophony of musical notes, the waves crashing against the shoreline… but on this particular afternoon, there was only silence. It was as if we had entered a parallel universe, a bubble of tranquility. Once we settled in, I noticed the enormous number of seagulls who seemed to be hovering nearby, taking off and landing a bit too close

for comfort. Just as I was thinking this one particular winged creature appeared to be launching its flight awfully low to the ground, my friend burst into laughter as he barely cleared her head. “He literally just hit me in the head!” she exclaimed. “I just felt his feet running across my hair!” From Candid Camera to Alfred Hitchcock, in a matter of minutes. After an hour or so of baking in the hot sun, we decided to embark on our regular trek toward the Lighthouse in search of seashells, and of course that picture perfect shot of the waves crashing onto the shore. This time, I decided to make it my mission to collect several dozen oyster shells in order to create a heart-shaped work of art in the sand. About one hour, and several ocean wipeouts of my masterpiece later, we decided to head back. Now generally, after a lengthy absence, it is perfectly normal to find our blanket surrounded by new neighbors, or perhaps none, as the beach tends to begin to empty in the late afternoon sun. This time, we were greeted by a man, sitting in a single chair, surrounded by about a half dozen assorted beach bags,

coolers and folding chairs - and an umbrella… one giant umbrella, staked right at the edge of my blanket, engulfing our entire area in complete shadow. I contemplated asking him to join us; then settled on politely asking him to move, as I hadn’t come to the beach to share his umbrella. He stared at me blankly, expressionless. Then, without a word, he slowly, deliberately got up and moved his umbrella - about half an inch. Completely bewildered, my friend and I exchanged a look. Was he serious? Were we the only people who understood the concept of personal boundaries? An entire field of sand, and here we were fighting over one square foot of space. Flabbergasted, we decided to gather our things and move slightly up the beach, to a completely empty expanse devoid of rogue umbrellas, seagulls and any other potential pitfalls. As we settled into this new spot, we were startled by the sound of people squealing and turned to see our old area now engulfed by the high tide. And there, in the middle of the surf, sat our old friend and his umbrella.

Medical Team Honored

In 2008 Dr. Coyne, Chief Surgeon and Medical Director of the Suffolk County Police Department, incepted the Medical Crisis Action Team also known as MedCAT. This team, which is now made up of 28 Police Officers, is trained in Adavanced Life Support (ALS) at the paramedic or EMT ciritical care level. These officers can start IVs, perform intubation, administer medication and other advanced life support care. The Team is on call 24/7, and having them respond to a call can often save a life. The team is also comprised of five physicians who have specialized tactical training. The MedCAT is also

trained to operate as a Medical Swat Team for high risk situations such as an active shooter or terrorist situation; they can provide care under fire to police officers and civilians and can handle Chemical, Biological, and Radiation attacks. This well deserving group along with its mastermind, Dr. Coyne, was honored by Legislator Leslie Kennedy and the whole Legislature last Tuesday at their General Meeting. Having previously been honored at the national level with the 2017 National Officers Safety presented by the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund and the US Department of Justice Valor Initiative, it was time

EMTs Honored

Benjamin Cohen and Danielle Cohen, two emergency medical technicians with Northwell Health’s Center for Emergency Medical Services (CEMS) in

Syosset, were recognized as Stars of Life by the American Ambulance Association (AAA) at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. The dynamic duo, who

are unrelated, were joined by Northwell colleagues William Bailey (Lenox Hill Hospital) and Robert Mazzo (Staten Island University Hospital), who were also recognized. The AAA highlights excellence and contributions made by EMS workers across the county at the annual event in the nation’s capitol. Mr. Cohen, a resident of Searingtown, has been an EMT for six years. After working in a hospital emergency department, he says there was no hesitation to get out in the field and into an ambulance himself. He got his EMT certification and joined Northwell Health’s CEMS in 2014. Mr. Cohen says it was the strong moral structure he had growing up that

influenced him. “It’s good to put yourself into situations where you can help people. That was a big drive,” he said. “My father is a dentist and he was also a lifeguard so he always got us into that. When he had a heart attack it was scary for the whole family because we thought we’d lose him. I guess in the back of your mind you always hope you have the skill to help somebody if that were to happen to a family member.” Ms. Cohen, of Stony Brook, has been an EMT for 20 years, and like Mr. Cohen, a personal experience led her into the career of helping others. “When I was younger my grandfather was really sick and he was treated very poorly at home and in

the hospital by the people that were supposed to be taking care of him,” she said. “At a very young age I vowed that if I was ever in a position to help someone, I would never let them be treated the way my grandfather was treated. That was my intention and still is today.” Ms. Cohen joined Northwell CEMS in 2002 both in the field as an EMT and also as a communications specialist. She continues both roles today. She started her career at age 18, working for the Port Jefferson Volunteer Ambulance. Of both recipients, “We are honored and privileged to work with such great people on our team,” Thomas Hughes, field supervisor at Northwell

CEMS, said of the two recipients. “Seeing them recognized for their hard work and dedication to the profession makes us all very proud and provides a platform for the recognition of the EMS industry, as well as the great people that protect and serve within it.” To be eligible for nomination for the AAA Stars of Life program, ambulance services employees must go beyond their given work responsibilities, contribute to their communities through volunteer work or leadership, and have service records that incorporate the mission of ambulance operation.
