Arbor Day Poster Winner
T
his year’s winner in the annual New York State Arbor Day Poster Contest is Annika Chang, a fifth grade student in Mrs. Petraglia’s class at Mandracchia Sawmill Intermediate School in Commack. The theme for 2014 was “New York’s Forests, Where We Live.” More than 1,200 posters from fifth graders across the State were submitted to the nine DEC regions and judged by local community volunteers, green professionals and staff.

Snapshots & Timehops By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time last year, I was in the midst of an eightday tour of Ireland with 13 members of my family. And today, thanks to the wonders of a clever little app called “Timehop,” I am able to relive each day of that memorable vacation via the handful of photos I posted on Facebook throughout the journey. And they say too much sharing is bad! Of course, this is but a small sampling of the nearly 1,000 pictures I snapped over the course of the week, from takeoff to landing and everything in between. Seeing as I
am slightly obsessed with finding random scenes and candid shots to capture on a daily basis, you can just imagine how thrilled I was to explore one of the most beautiful lands abroad. Under any circumstances, it qualified one of the greatest experiences of my life. Coupled with the fact that it marked my first time on a plane and my first journey out of the country, well, that just added to the highlight reel. Considering that, prior to this, I had never ventured beyond the span of states between Vermont and Virginia, it was quite a momentous occasion. This past Christmas, I
attempted to compile just a “few” favorites to create calendars and a small book of the journey as gifts. Seemed like a simple enough task; however, four hours after my initial brainstorm, I was still sitting at my computer, poring over hundreds of photos, comparing and eliminating until I had it narrowed down to the “perfect” mix. As if there was such a thing. The perfection is in the moments you create, the unplanned, unstaged instants that bring to life stories and anecdotes to last a lifetime. We could all use a few more of those.

International Paper donated the paper for the official Arbor Day posters and bookmarks. In addition, the State Arbor Day Committee invited Annika to participate in the official Arbor Day Event to plant a tree with Commissioner Joe Martens on April 25th at the Empire State Plaza. Trees keep our air supply clean, reduce noise pollution, improve water quality, help prevent erosion, provide food and building materials, and
create shade. Just before school ended in June, Annika and students from other fifth grade classes gathered in front of her school and planted a Cherry Blossom tree on the grounds of Sawmill Intermediate School, donated in Annika’s honor by the D.E.C. Urban Forestry Program. Sally Kellogg, Urban Forestry Program Assistant NYS D.E.C., and Vinnie Drzewucki, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County, spoke to the assembled children about Arbor Day and the benefits of trees. John Wernet from NYS D.E.C. assisted the children as they took turns shoveling dirt to plant the tree.

This summer, Sheriff DeMarco will accompany Judge Camacho on a tour of Suffolk’s youth bureaus to learn more about the services available in each community. “Through his initiatives focusing on adolescent offenders, Sheriff DeMarco has proven that he is a leader in confronting the challenges facing our county’s juvenile justice system, and I am pleased to work with him in reaching out to our townships to coordinate local efforts to make sure that we, as a community who cares about our children, keep kids out of jails and make our neighborhoods safer,” stated Judge Camacho. The Sheriff’s Youth Reentry Task Force, which has grown to more than 40 members from the fields of mental health, education, government and corrections, has played an integral role in the program’s success. In June 2014, he was appointed by the Suffolk County Executive to be the Chairman of the County’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC). The primary purpose of the CJCC is to reduce crime and recidivism by promoting communication, collaboration, education, systemwide coordination, and decision-making among local juvenile and adult criminal justice agencies and local government, resulting in increased public safety for all of Suffolk County.

Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone, Councilwoman Susan A. Berland and Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia took part July 21st in the groundbreaking for the renovation and expansion of the Huntington Historical Society’s headquarters at 209 Main Street. As part of the project, the society is renovating the 1905-vintage Huntington Sewing and Trade School Building that has been its home since 1982; expanding into the vacant lot to the west to provide additional, climatecontrolled archives storage space; and adding an entry courtyard. The Society has long sought
the Veterans of Foreign Wars. A graduate of SUNY Farmingdale (he also holds a master’s degree from Long Island University’s C.W. Post College), he served for more than three decades as a member of the college’s council, including stints as its vice chair and acting chair. He is a former member of the board of directors of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce. Jerideau, 85, retired from the New York City Transit Authority more than 30 years ago, and since then has been active in many panels and civic activities, beginning with his appointment in 1982 to the Town’s Mass Transit Citizen’s Advisory Council, which he later chaired. He has been a member of the Huntington African American Task Force, the Huntington Station Revitalization Task Force and, for the past 21 years, a member and chair of the Town’s Board of

Summer Camp Program County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco announced today that 19 children from Suffolk County will head upstate early Sunday morning for a fun-filled week at the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute’s 2014 Summer Camp. The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp is designed to provide a solid recreational program while fostering a sense of good citizenship. This will mark the 37th year of the camp’s operation. The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp, which is located near Penn Yan in Yates County, is supported by the Sheriffs’ Association’s Honorary Members through their contributions and annual dues. This year the camp
will accommodate over 900 deserving boys and girls from across New York State. Sheriff DeMarco, in discussing the objectives and goals of the camp said, “The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp Program is designed to provide a child who ordinarily would not have the chance, an opportunity to go away during the summer.” He added, “The primary objective is to create a positive interaction between the kids attending camp and the officers who participate in the camp programs. We have found from experience that the kids develop a renewed respect and understanding for the men and women who enforce our laws.
The officers become their friends for a week.” Throughout the weeklong stay, the children observe special exhibits and demonstrations presented by Sheriffs’ Offices from across the state. Included in these presentations are boat and bike safety programs, law enforcement equipment and technical demonstrations, archery competitions for accuracy and even a talent show just for fun. Upon completion, all children are awarded a diploma for their participation in a program of “Good Citizenship and Law Enforcement Studies.”
The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) recently hosted its 29th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The golf outing was the foundation’s largest fundraising event of the year. Hundreds of supporters played golf and attended the evening festivities. The Marty Lyons Foundation was founded by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange.” The MLF grants wishes to children, between the ages of three and seventeen, who have terminal or lifethreatening illnesses, and is the only nonprofit in the nation to offer second wishes. The foundation’s Man of the Year, Bobby Cunningham, Jr., owner of Duct Cleaning Co., Inc., was saluted at the evening dinner. “Bobby Cunningham, Jr., is an individual the foundation “The Celebrity Golf Classic

Currently, Farmer is working on two book projects: Ancient Trees in Modern Times (a history of the long search for the world’s oldest living thing, and a meditation on the future of long-lived trees in the Anthropocene), and The Aerial View (a global study of aerial photography, aerial surveillance, satellite imagery, and remote sensing). Farmer earned a BA from Utah State University, an MA from the University of Montana and a PhD from Stanford University. He has been the recipient of fellowships from the Stanford Humanities Center, the HuntingtonUSC Institute on California and the West, the National Humanities Center, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Tanner Humanities Center at the University of Utah. The opposite of a lifetime achievement award, the Hiett Prize seeks to encourage future leaders in the humanities by recognizing their early accomplishments and potential and assisting their ongoing work through a cash award of $50,000.

Jared Farmer, PhD, an Associate Professor of History at Stony Brook University, is the 2014 recipient of the Hiett Prize in the Humanities, a national honor awarded by The Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture. The award recognizes scholars devoted to the humanities in the early stages of their careers whose work shows extraordinary promise and has a significant public component related to contemporary culture. A prolific writer and educator at Stony Brook, Farmer is an environmental historian with special expertise in the American West. He will receive the Hiett Prize and give a lecture on his scholarship at a luncheon at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas on November 12th. “Jared brings to light the hidden histories of landscapes and habitats
and the ways human beings interact with them,” said Dr. J. Larry Allums, Executive Director of the Dallas Institute. “His still-unfolding work in a relatively new field of the humanities is of such a high order that it promises to become a model for others who will follow him.” “I’m honored to receive this recognition of my work,” said Farmer. “My area of scholarship overlaps with landscape history and cultural geography, but my career project is larger. I want to help people see connections between local landscapes and planetary processes.” Farmer has completed two books in his time at Stony Brook: On Zion’s Mount: Mormons, Indians, and the American Landscape (Harvard, 2008), which won five prizes, including the Francis Parkman Prize from the Society of American Historians for best-written non-fiction book on an American theme, and Trees in Paradise: A California History (Norton, 2013), which received a John Brinckerhoff Jackson Book Prize from the Foundation for Landscape Studies. He frequently gives guest lectures and radio interviews. His essays and reviews have appeared in publications such as
