Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.
This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events.
Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island.

Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are: career options by salary, understanding

money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. EFF has been on the front line of helping families in need with food and assisting with a health care PPE program. This pandemic has opened our community up to more financial hardships then imagined. As of late-March 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention did not see any reason to believe that animals, including pets, might be a source of infection for the COVID-19 virus. In addition, at that time the CDC had not received any reports of pets or other animals getting sick with the virus in the United States. While it’s unlikely that pets or other animals would pass the COVID-19 virus to humans, it’s important to note that animals can spread diseases to people, which only emphasizes the importance of practicing healthy habits around pets and other animals. Washing hands after handling or being around animals or their waste, food or supplies is one simple
preventive measure that can safeguard humans from diseases transmitted by pets. Properly cleaning up after animals is another simple way to reduce the risk of diseases being transmitted by pets. The CDC advises cat owners to scoop cat litter daily and change it at least twice per week. Pregnant women should never clean cat litter. Dog waste should be promptly removed from private and public spaces. When cleaning cages, habitat and pet supplies, do so outside the home to avoid contaminating interior surfaces. When that’s not possible, clean such materials in a laundry room sink or bathtub rather than the kitchen sink.

New York Cancer & Blood Specialists Become the First Community Cancer Center to Initiate and Administer Lu-177 Therapy (Lutathera) in New York State New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) recently announced that it is the first community practice in New York State to administer Lu177 therapy (Lutathera): the first radioactive drug approved for targeted treatment for patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). NETs form in cells that interact with the nervous system or in glands that produce hormones. These cells, called neuroendocrine cells, can be found throughout the body, but NETs are most often found in the abdomen, especially in the gastrointestinal tract. Lu-177 therapy provides patients with certain cancerous NETs with a new treatment option which will positively impact healthcare by reducing morbidity and mortality associated with cancers. Mostly available in academic hospitals, Lu177 therapy provides an accessory treatment option for patients with NETs and can be considered in metastatic neuroendocrine cancers earlier in treatment. This
advancement provides a new alternative for patients who don’t respond to other treatments. The drug consists of a radioactive isotope, Lu-177, attached to dotatate- a molecule that binds to GEP-NET cells that have a molecule called a somatostatin receptor on their surface. The drug then enters these somatostatin receptorpositive tumor cells, and radiation emitted by Lu177 helps to kill the cells. “Lu-177 therapy is only the cusp of the burgeoning theranostics field where we will be able to bring stateof-the-art personalized therapies to our patients across Long Island and beyond to improve their underlying clinical condition and quality of life,” Tony Abraham, DO, MPA, Director of PET/ CT and Theranostics said. “In addition, we are glad to provide our oncologists and referring gastroenterologists with an additional armament in the therapy options available to them to fight and conquer cancer.” Most NET patients have tumors that express somatostatin receptors
and NYCBS uses an FDA approved diagnostic imaging method that uses dotatate tagged with a different radioactive element, gallium-68, to locate positive tumors using PET imaging services. “We are so excited to bring this remarkable treatment to the patients of Long Island who have neuroendocrine tumors. We will be the only comprehensive community-based cancer center that offers this in New York State so that patients don’t have to go to a hospital to receive this treatment,” stated Jeff Vacirca MD, CEO of NYCBS. Smithtown Seniors Still Get A Chance To Celebrate
Although the senior classes at Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West closed out their end-of-year activities a bit differently this year, they still had plenty of reasons to celebrate. The students from both schools had the opportunity to attend a car parade for their senior countdown. In typical years, the students counted down the last
moments in their school while the minutes before the final bell of the school year were displayed on the football scoreboard. This year, the students drove by in their decorated vehicles as faculty and staff waved at the procession of cars. The countdown began at 1:03 p.m., one hour before the last bell sounds. Gold cord recipients, those who maintained a GPA of 4.0 for four
consecutive years, had a chance to receive their gold cord awards package, presented by a member of the administrative team. Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to announce that the works of Gisela Skoglund will be on view at Apple Bank, 91 Route 111, Smithtown through August 1, 2020 The exhibition, part of STAC’s Outreach Gallery Program, can be viewed during regular banking hours. Kings Park artist Gisela Skoglund’s life has taken her through many forms of artistic expression. Early on, her original passion was for oil on canvas. In High School, she was awarded a scholarship to Pratt Institute where she pursued advertising art. All her endeavors have brought her to the use of painting in the mediums of watercolor, acrylic and oil as well as the use of pen and ink. Gisela’s inspirations come from the beauty of nature, photography and other sights that appear in everyday life. She has exhibited her work in juried and invitational shows across Long Island. “I find that painting transports me to a place where time is forgotten and I am totally concentrated and involved.”

Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta (Fort Salonga) has asked Arline Goldstein, of St. James, to serve as his appointee to the Suffolk County Citizens Advisory Board for the Arts. Established in 1978, the board suggests, reviews and recommends policies and programs for the arts. A major function of the board is the allocation of grants to various artistic and cultural organizations. The position is voluntary. “Ms. Goldstein brings an incredible wealth of talent to the board as she is an artist, who has had her work exhibited throughout

Honor Society Students Take Book Buddies Virtual
Smithtown High School East incoming senior Isabella Surrusco recently helped facilitate a quarantine version of a service project done by the National English Honor Society this school year. Surrusco is the historian of the school’s NEHS. One of her favorite activities done through the NEHS is book buddies. “We have devoted an afternoon or two [per year] to visit an elementary school in the Smithtown Central
School District, read to the students, and do an activity with them,” she said. “Due to the coronavirus and the closing of schools, we missed out on opportunities like this one and to share our love for English.” The NEHS officers, along with their adviser Ms. Kostopoulos, brainstormed new ways to keep the book buddies running during the quarantine. “My idea was to create a virtual book buddies,” said Surrusco. “I
created a Flipgrid account where our NEHS members could upload videos of themselves reading either a book, short story or poem. My idea was to send these videos, or the link to them, to the elementary school students, who might have a harder time learning under the circumstances or might want to hear some literature read to them. I have received more than 20 videos from club members.”

Tackan Elementary Appoints New Principal
Smithtown Central School District has named Matthew Furey as principal of Tackan Elementary School, effective July 1. Furey, who previously served as assistant principal of Nesaquake Middle School, replaced Dr. Allyn Leeds, who retired at the close of the 2019-2020 school year. “I am honored and humbled to join the Tackan Elementary School family and to become part of a school and community that have a truly stellar reputation for positive school involvement and for holding the education of our children in the highest regard,” Furey said. “I am

Smithtown Appoints New Assistant Superintendent
Smithtown Central School District has named Daniel Helmes as assistant superintendent for pupil personnel services, effective July 1. He replaces Mona Tobin who retired at the end of the 2019-2020 school year. Prior to joining Smithtown, Helmes was the coordinator of middle school special education at Half Hollow Hills Central School District, a position he held since 2007. He also served as an assistant director of special education at East Greenbush Central School District from 2005-2007. “I am honored and thrilled to become a part of the Smithtown Central

US Navy Commander Diane Gardner Selected As The First 13th Legislative District Recipient For “Women’s Veterans Appreciation Day”
Earlier this year the Suffolk County Legislature enacted legislation designating June 12 as “Women Veterans Appreciation Day” in Suffolk County. Each legislator selects one female veteran from his/ her district to recognize on that day at a ceremony. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Legislators and their honorees could not meet in person, but could participate via a Zoom meeting or by phone. The Legislators hope that next year they will be able to be acknowledge the 2020 and 2021 recipients at a luncheon. Commander Diane Gardner deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan in August of 2019 as the Director of Nursing Services for the Role 3 Multinational NATO Unit at Kandahar Hospital. Her rotation was the busiest one with respect to the number of patients hospitalized during the past five years. The Navy extended her assignment due to the COVID 19 pandemic, and she returned home on June 25 where family, friends and Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta greeted her at Islip MacArthur Airport. The Commander received the Bronze Star Medal for her extraordinary achievement
and performance as a Registered Nurse Anesthetist. She and her team were honored with this medal for their joint effort to save a Navy Seal Chief who was shot multiple times. While in the operating room, the Commander gave the Chief 140 units of blood and her team spent eight and a half hours in the operating room treating his serious and complex injuries. Through their efforts, he survived and was transported for additional care at Walter Reed Hospital. In 1991, she graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh with a BS in Nursing. In addition, that year, she commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force Nurse Corps. In 1997, she transferred to the US Navy Nurse Corps to pursue a degree and certification as a Nurse Anesthetist. Commander Gardner has additional certifications in critical care, emergency and trauma nursing. When not deployed, Commander Gardner is a Nurse Anesthetist at Stony Brook University Hospital. She is also a Nurse Educator at Assessment Technology Institute (ATI Testing). Earlier in her career, she was the State Director of Nursing for Virginia;
CYO Softball and was a candy striper at St. John’s Hospital. Legislator Trotta said, “It is an honor for me to recognize Commander Gardner for her outstanding accomplishments in
