Church. For more than 20 years, she had been a volunteer firefighter with the Kings Park Fire Department. “I first heard Roseanne sing at the Kings Park Fire Department’s Installation Dinner last year and thought it would be great to have her sing the National Anthem at the summer concerts,” said
Legislator Rob Trotta. The concerts are held each Thursday night at 8 p.m. on the front lawn of the Smithtown main Library through August 18th. The Sunrise Rotary also collects nonperishable food items and toiletries for the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry.

More than 400 motorcycles with their riders and passengers - adding up to over 600 participants - took off from Stony Brook University Cancer Center on Sunday, July 17th for the 10th annual Sticky Finger Motorcycle Run. This event helped to raise over $20,000, of which will support breast cancer services and programs at Stony Brook, adding to the upwards of $180,000 raised by past runs. Hosted by 102.3 FM WBAB Fingers and the Great South Bay Music Festival, the event kicked off with live rock ‘n’ roll
with classic rock band, “TRAINWRECK.” Food trucks and vendors were on site at the Cancer Center and participants enjoyed free giveaways. Then everyone hit the road and headed south to the Great South Bay Music Festival held at Shorefront Park in Patchogue. Riders and their passengers then had the opportunity to listen to two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame legend Graham Nash and more than 15 other musical performances. Used to be a time when you could simply pick up the phone – yes, the actual phone – and call a friend to go to dinner, a movie, the beach, whatever. Chances are, you also needed to coordinate a ride to said destination from a parental unit; but still, somehow, you made it happen. Nowadays, such outings require about 30 days advance notice – and, even at that, will most likely be
rescheduled at least three times before materializing. For some reason, the more methods of communication available, the more difficult it has become to maintain contact. Actual, personal contact. Sending a text, only to have it halfheartedly acknowledged four days later, is not quite the same as catching up over drinks. Liking a Facebook status doesn’t indicate your genuine interest in another person’s life. Face-to-face conversation does. I have always been the type of person who tries to keep in touch, the one reaching out, making plans, coordinating… And I don’t mind it, mostly. But when it feels as though it’s becoming more of a chore
than anything, well, perhaps it’s time to reevaluate. Friendships, like the communication which they are based upon, are a twoway street. Summer is a perfect season to reconnect, to socialize, to reunite with those long-lost, or perhaps just slightly lapsed, acquaintances. School is out, work schedules tend to be more lax, vacations are planned… and more often than not, it winds up being worth the wait. If only it could be written in ink from day one.
