I am endlessly fascinated by words and the countless ways in which they can be arranged, manipulated, stylized to convey the precise meaning the author intends. And with that, is there ever really complete precision? Once the text is shared with the masses, the words take on a life of their own, open to new interpretations by an endless array of readers. Such is the beauty of the art. Inspiration is everywhere, if you choose to be open to it. It’s been something of a running joke in my family for years that I tend to quietly observe the interactions of those around me, storing away the nuances of particular events for a later date when they will, inevitably, wind up in a column. While I can’t say I am ever consciously taking mental notes, I suppose the comings and goings of others do find their way into my writings from time to time. There is a quote I’ve come across that I believe speaks to the art of writing quite accurately:

entire stories be derived from the briefest instant. It’s all in the approach. Just as photographs capture the visual of a moment for posterity, words capture the pure essence behind it. They exist separately, and are at once complementary. Perhaps that is the source of my fascination with both. To be able to elicit an emotion whether positive, negative or somewhere in between - is always the ultimate goal. To achieve that is the greatest sign of success for anyone in the arts. The process to reach that level is a never-ending one, to be continuously tweaked and modified in the quest for perfection, for meaning. May we all find it someday.

New drivers can opt to park in spaces that have plenty of room or allow for pulling out (rather than backing out). This can improve visibility and reduce the risk of hitting other vehicles. Driving is exciting for newly licensed teens. but parents must emphasize the importance of defensive driving to their young drivers.

In keeping with its social-emotional learning initiatives, the Smithtown Central School District is helping its middle school students stay focused and prepare for the upcoming school year during the summer months with its Middle School CAMP (Character Academics Mindset Preparedness) program housed at Accompsett Middle School in July. Approximately 60 students in grades 7-9 participate in the threeday-a-week program, which aims to educate the whole student by
connecting the mind and body. The groups do a quick mindfulness check in at the start and end of each day. Working in core groups, students rotate through different classes in an effort to build their academic, creative, social and emotional skill sets. In the movement class, students learn mindfulness, how to selfregulate by connecting their mind and body and how to link their attitudes to their academics. Students learn about real food vs. non-real food and how to connect what they are eating to how they

are feeling during the nutrition class. They also use musical instruments as a way to express themselves. Academically, each group takes part in a daily Genius Hour, a projectbased learning initiative that allows students to explore their passions and encourages creativity. The HeartMath class teaches students how to use their breathing to regulate their thinking and emotions and how they can apply those skills in everyday situations.

Patrick has been an active member of SSCM parish and school community, serving as an Altar Server for several years and acting in a volunteer capacity at every major SSCM event, from Parish Outreach food drives to Breakfasts with Santa. In addition to his academic success, Patrick has rounded out his thrust for learning and community time with a healthy dose of athletics, having enjoyed three
years on SSCM’s Cross Country Team throughout his middle school years. He was also a member of SSCM’s Shakespeare troupe, a member of SSCM’s Distinguished Scholars, and was in the Gifted and Talented Program at SSCM. With his choice of high school acceptance at Holy Trinity, St. Anthony’s and St. John the Baptist High School, Patrick will be happy to attend St. John the Baptist in the fall, having earned a Coop Scholarship based on his CHSEE (Catholic High School Entrance Exam) scores! If that weren’t enough, Patrick also managed to capture several other honors, including an SSCM Senior Citizens Scholarship, awards for Altar Service and Excellence in Social Studies, a Parents Association Scholarship and the Monsignor Rooney Scholarship from the Holy Name Society. Celebrity Golf Classic The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF), celebrating its 35th Anniversary, recently hosted its 32nd Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The Celebrity Golf Classic is the Foundation’s biggest fund raising event of the year to benefit its mission of granting special wishes to children between the ages of 3 to 17 diagnosed with life-threatening or terminal illnesses. After golf, guests attended a cocktail hour and dinner reception, including an award ceremony, raffles and auctions.
In attendance was Matthew Degori, a teen who has a rare disorder called Lowe Syndrome. He was granted a wish to visit Disney World in 2006. His mother publicly thanked the Foundation and said she loves being a part of the MLF family. “It is all about making the wish kids happy. That is the ultimate goal,” remarked Marty Lyons. “I am so pleased and proud to see so many golfers and individuals come out to support this great cause.” The Celebrity Golf Classic attracted over 400 golfers and supporters. Former NY Jets football
stars Kenny Schroy (MLF co-founder), John Schmitt, Mike Stromberg, Greg Buttle and Erik Coleman attended the event. On Tuesday, July 11th, music lovers gathered at the Jones Beach Bandshell for a performance by The Brothers Band an Allman Brothers tribute band comprised of students from Rock-n-Roll U (RNRU). The band, comprised of a mix of typical children, and individuals with special needs aged 13-18, performed a full set of Allman Brothers classics, in addition to showing off some of their musical freestyle compositions. This performance was the first of three concerts that RNRU students will be performing at the Jones Beach Bandshell.

Bringing Back the Team Legislators from Nassau and Suffolk County stood together outside the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum recently in a show of solidarity for bringing the New York Islanders hockey team back to Long Island. The beloved team, which for more than 40 years called the Coliseum home, moved to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn at the end of the 2014 season. Ever since, attendance numbers have been disappointing and fans and players have complained about the new accommodations. Legislators called for the team to return to their rightful home at the Coliseum and explained how such a move is feasible given the widespread support. The press conference was the culmination of a grass roots movement led by fan James Romano, of Oakdale, who contacted legislators from both counties asking them to support a possible Islanders relocation back to the Coliseum. “The Islanders have such an incredible history of winning in the Coliseum and it would mean so much to the residents of Long Island for them to come back to the island,” said Suffolk County Legis. William Lindsay. “The bipartisan commitment by legislators from both counties truly reveals that the citizens of Nassau and Suffolk want the Islanders to come back home.” “As a lifelong Islander fan, former season ticket holder and legislator, there is no one that would like to see the Islanders come back to their home in the “barn” more than me,” said Nassau County Legis. Arnie Drucker. “Today is so monumental because if we can get both Nassau and Suffolk, Democratic and Republican leaders all in one place to stand united to bring the Islanders home to the coliseum, then there should be no obstacle that should prevent them from returning.”
Legislators said an Islanders move back to Nassau County would have a far-reaching impact. “Bringing the Islanders back to the Nassau Coliseum is important to our region,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “Not only would it benefit Nassau County, but it would also benefit Suffolk County both in terms of economic growth and community pride. Suffolk County residents who grew up watching the Islanders don’t want to trek into Brooklyn to support their team. We ask that discussions to bring Long Island’s hockey team home move forward and that
the proposal be given full consideration.” The Islanders and Barclays both have the option to opt out of their 25-year licensing agreement after the 20182019 season. In letters to the Islanders franchise and the National Hockey League, legislators said Nassau Events Center, which renovated the Coliseum, has assured them it is willing to make modifications to the venue to accommodate the hockey team. “Today we stand in front of the very same building where the Islanders won numerous Stanley Cup
Championships and made generations of fans who believed in them, “said Nassau County Democratic Minority Leader Legis. Kevan Abrahams. Now it’s time for us to believe. To believe that if we can get democrats and republicans from two counties to agree on bringing the Islanders back to their coliseum home; then why can’t we believe that this very coliseum can once again be their home?” Myth: The renovated Nassau Coliseum is not able to host a major league hockey team full time. There is a gap between what is there now and what a professional hockey team would need for Nassau Coliseum to be usable. Fact: The new Nassau Coliseum is a world-class facility that would require very few enhancements to accommodate a professional hockey team full time. If the Islanders commit to a significant number of games at the Coliseum, Nassau Events Center will make the necessary enhancements to make this their home arena. Myth: The team could come back temporarily, but not permanently. There are not enough seats. Fact: Yes, the team can come back permanently to the Coliseum. There are active discussions happening between current Coliseum management and the Islanders and until those discussions come to fruition, nothing can be finalized on the enhancements that would occur. Myth: The Commissioner has said that the team will never return to Long Island so is there really a purpose in trying to get the team back? Fact: Current discussions are occurring with the team about their future so nothing should be dismissed at this point.
Congressman Lee Zeldin announced that a $180,000 federal grant has been awarded to Francis Gabreski Airport in Westhampton, New York, which is home of the 106th Rescue Wing of the Air National Guard. The federal grant, secured through the U.S. Department of Transportation, will be used to fund phase one of a much needed four-phase project to construct a 4,900 square foot contract air traffic control tower, which will replace the existing tower that does not meet current building codes
and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. Phase one is a site selection study. Congressman Zeldin said, “The 106th Rescue Wing of the New York Air National Guard in Westhampton has a long and distinguished history of service to the community and our country. The tower that is currently at Gabreski, which has been around since the 1940s, will be replaced by a new tower with the necessary level of communications equipment and safety upgrades. We must
ensure that the Gabreski facilities are always kept in top condition, as the 106th Rescue Wing plays a crucial role in protecting our national security and implementing emergency response requirements. This grant will provide Suffolk County with the funding necessary to start the process of replacing the air traffic control tower.” Since 2015, Congressman Zeldin, who has visited Gabreski Airport multiple times and viewed the deteriorated condition of the tower firsthand, has been part
of the bipartisan coalition in Congress working to protect contract towers, especially those that play an important national security role, such as Gabreski tower, from proposed FAA cuts and closures. The Congressman has been working closely with House colleagues on the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee and Aviation Subcommittee, Suffolk County officials, as well as past and current base commanders to secure federal funding for the new tower. In December

Federal Funding Approved 2016, Congressman Zeldin joined colleagues in the House, sending a letter to then President-elect Trump to support contract towers, and highlighting the importance of this program in saving taxpayer money, protecting aviation safety, and in providing air traffic services to the military. Most recently, Congressman Zeldin was joined by 90 lawmakers in a successful request calling on the House Appropriations Committee to fully fund contract towers. Just this week, the transportation
appropriation bill approved by the committee contained $162 million for the contract tower program, which is a $3 million increase from the prior year. Following the completion of stage one, there will be an environmental assessment that takes place in phase two, as well as the design stage in phase three. Phase four will be the construction of the new tower. Overall, the project is expected to cost approximately $5 million.
