constructing a spectacular gathering place for the community, which will undoubtedly boost foot traffic to the local shops along Lake Avenue.” Supervisor Ed Wehrheim The park design and construction has been made possible thanks to a local 501(c)(3) arts organization, Celebrate St. James, Past - Present Future. The not-for-Profit group has spearheaded fundraising efforts and solicited local Landscape Architect Bob Retnauer of RDA and Architect Michael Morbillo of Enspire Design Group to create plans for the park. In November 2020, Supervisor Wehrheim and the Town Board joined with Celebrate St. James, as well as the St. James Chamber, Civic Association and members of the community in a groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the start of construction. In late Summer 2020, the Town of Smithtown purchased the old Irish Viking lot on Lake Avenue in an intergovernmental

contract with Suffolk County. The former pub has been completely demolished, leveled and the Highway Department has recently completed the installation of drainage infrastructure. As highway and construction crews continue with the construction of the municipal parking area and foundation work for the park, a rigorous planning phase is underway to erect the new open space. The Planning Department and community development coordinator has met regularly with Landscape Architect Bob Retnauer of RDA and Architect Michael Morbillo of Enspire Design Group in coordination of the park construction. These St. James residents have volunteered their craft and time to design what will undoubtedly be a beautiful gathering place for Town of Smithtown residents. ST. JAMES CHAMBER OF COMMERCE DONATES $20K - On Monday, July 12, 2021, Town of Smithtown leaders joined the board members of the St. James Chamber of Commerce to accept a check for $20,000. The Town of Smithtown Department of Environment and Waterways collected 14.12 tons of waste at the Hazardous Household Waste event. On Saturday, July 11th, approximately 390 Smithtown households participated in safely disposing 28,240 pounds of toxic items, which are prohibited in regular curbside waste pickups. “Outstanding work! It is a true testament to how environmentally sensitive our residents are when we see turnouts like this past weekend’s Hazardous Waste event. We are also very fortunate to have an excellent team spearheading these events. I have to personally acknowledge the incredible work done by Neal Sheehan and his foreman Tom Passariello, our environmental director David Barnes, solid waste coordinator Mike Engelmann and senior environmental analyst Rich Kitt, along with the Department of Environment and Waterways, Public Safety Fire Marshals and the hard working crew at MSF.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim Smithtown Municipal Services Facility employees worked in conjunction with the Department of Environment and Waterways Environmental Director David Barnes and Solid Waste Coordinator Mike Engelmann to safely secure over twenty (55) gallon drums, sixteen (1) cubic yard boxes, three miscellaneous containers for specialized hazardous waste, and two full 30 cubic yard roll-off containers loaded up with paints/solvents, etc. The exact weight collected was 14.12 tons (scale house net) in hazardous materials. Materials were collected and manifested for disposal by Radiac Research Corp. In addition to residents dropping off hazardous household waste, many circled their vehicles around to pick up bags of free mulch on the way out. “Smithtown Residents are very environmentally

proactive. They pay attention to labels, avoiding toxic products at the store. This event is a great reminder to not only be cognizant of what products to use at home, but to responsibly dispose of hazardous products as well… the turnout and sheer weight of this collection is proof positive that our team of Environmental experts are doing a great job at keeping residents informed.” - Councilman Tom McCarthy A portion of the wastes collected for manifested disposal include: waste oil based paints/flammable paints, gasoline, paint thinners, waste gases, petroleum distillates, flammable solids, oxidizers liquids and solids, sodium/ potassium nitrates, acids, corrosives, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, misc. toxic liquids (i.e. Chlordane, etc.) and solids, lacquers, lithium batteries, battery acids and various other toxic compounds. The New York State DEC is expected to reimburse the Town for 50% of the contractor expense for this event. “I would like to commend our town departments; Environment and Waterways, Public Safety Fire Marshals, Municipal Services Facility and their leadership, who facilitate these seamless events each year, and to the residents of Smithtown, for making a point of contributing to improving

our ecosystem through the safe disposal of household toxins.” Councilman Tom Lohmann, Liaison to Municipal Services Facility The next Household Hazardous Waste event is scheduled for Saturday, October 2, 2021. The Hazardous Household Waste events are for Smithtown Township residents only. Proof of residency will be strictly enforced. DID YOU KNOW: Residents can also dispose of Electronic waste, free of charge, at the Town Recycling Center (also located at 85 Old Northport Road). Electronic Waste such as computers, printers, TV’s, monitors, automotive and household batteries can be dropped off during regular hours for proper recycling. This is a free service. Proof of residency is required. Mulch is also available FREE OF CHARGE to residents. Smithtown residents can line up for Prepackaged bags of mulch with a maximum of ten (10) bags per visit. Smithtown Schools Recognized By Project Lead The Way Smithtown Central School District’s elementary and middle schools have been recognized as Distinguished Schools by Project Lead the Way for the 2019-2020 school year. For the fourth consecutive year, all seven of Smithtown’s elementary schools have been designated as Distinguished Launch Schools based on its PLTW Launch program in the 2019-2020 school year. Smithtown’s elementary schools represent seven of only

11 in New York to be recognized. Across the United States, only 374 Launch schools have received this distinction for 2020-2021. For the third consecutive year, all three of Smithtown’s middle schools have been designated as Distinguished Gateway Schools based on their Gateway program in the 2019-2020 school year. Smithtown’s middle schools represent three of four in New York to be recognized. Across the United States, only 158 Gateway schools have

The Smithtown High School East National Honor Society recently presented the staff at the New York State-run COVID vaccination site at Stony Brook with thank-you mugs of gratitude. This year, the honor society members have been focusing on gratitude. According to High School East National Honor

Society adviser Maria Zeitlin, the students are incredibly thankful for everything that the faculty and staff have done to make this school year a smooth and successful one. They sought to spread their gratitude outside the school community and were inspired by the hard work of the personnel at the Stony Brook

vaccination site. The students wanted to express their gratitude and came up with the idea of creating a coffee mug. Smithtown High School East senior and artist Nethmi Withanage designed the mug to include a symbol that was missed during COVID: a hug.

Toys For Tots 2.0 the program will be extended year-round to help families grappling with financial distress.This initiative has been of great importance to Presiding Officer Calarco, as his office led the charge during the 2020 holiday season, collecting roughly 110,000 toys from Suffolk County residents and generous Suffolk County employees. “The expansion of this program will ensure that

Protect Your Parks: 4 Ways To Keep Facilities Clean Parks have long been popular places to congregate. Facilities vary, but many parks offer various amenities — from walking or biking trails to dog runs to fitness areas. And while thousands of individuals and families visit parks each

year, when the COVID-19 pandemic was declared in early 2020, parks provided an escape for those who were unable to gather at indoor recreational facilities. Even though parks offered safe places to have fun outdoors when other options were limited, the pandemic affected the way the parks were managed due to budget cuts and reduced staff. This, coupled with a surge in visitors that continues today, only underscores the importance of all outdoor enthusiasts doing what they can to keep parks clean. The following are four effective strategies for individuals to keep parks clean. 1. Leave no trace According to National Geographic, Leave No Trace is a set of environmental ethics for interacting with the great outdoors. It follows guidelines for using parks in thoughtful, sustainable ways. In addition to carry in/carry out

Volunteer Individuals can volunteer to pick up trash at their local parks. Various conservation groups and organizations organize trash pick-up events each year. Suffolk County Majority Leader Legislator Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills) recently attended an Eagle Court of Honor for the newest Eagle Scout of Troop 106, Kevin Siegall and presented him with a County Proclamation and 16th Legislative District pin. Kevin is the 100th Scout to join the Eagle Scout Honor Roll of Troop 106 since 1957.

During his scouting tenure, Kevin earned 25 merit badges and completed the National Youth Leadership Training. For his Eagle project, he organized, planned, fundraised and supervised the building of two wooden benches and a perennial garden at the Suffolk YJCC in Commack, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. “It takes a tremendous

amount of character and dedication to attain the rank of Eagle Scout,” said Legislator Susan A. Berland. “Kevin and his family should be incredibly proud of all of the work he has done for the betterment of our community and I wish him all the best in his future endeavors. Congratulations!”

According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Town of Smithtown Live Music Series Kicks Off the Summer The Town of Smithtown Administration and the Recreation Department recently kicked off its annual Summer Concert Season at Long Beach and Hoyt Farm.
