The Girl Scouts planted a beautiful garden on the front lawn of the residence with stepping-stones they created. The project is part their Girl Scout Bronze Award.

My Secret Life With all the fuss over this new film, “The Secret Life of Pets,” I thought it only appropriate to provide my own account of this socalled hidden existence we all allegedly cultivate when our humans are away. First off, (spoiler alert) I have never taken to the sewers or made my way to Brooklyn looking for adventure. No, my exploration is confined to the four corners of my aquatic kingdom, where I examine every leaf of my plant and inspect each piece of gravel daily; you know, just to see if anything has changed overnight. While my human feeds me twice a day, I must say the time between meals could be a bit closer. What she does for all those hours in between, I’ll never know. I’ve often thought
I would like to tag along, but the pet store told her I might be susceptible to something called “motion sickness” in the car. Since I can’t go along, I do my best to entertain her whenever she enters the room, in the hope that she might linger just a bit longer. I perform my tricks for her, everything from diving for flakes the moment she drops them in the tank to giving little “love pecks” on her finger when she even so much as touches the water. Sometimes it works, and she’ll stay and have her cereal while perched on the counter next to me; but most times, it’s just some nonsense about “running late” and “see you later Buddy.” The only quality time my human and I have is when she’s busy cooking.

Then, I have a front row seat to all the pretty preparation. Honestly, my life is fairly dull and repetitive, not exactly the stuff of fine cinema. Well, except for that one time with Squeegee the Snail – but I digress. Mostly, it’s a lot of laps and fanning my fins to see if they’ve grown back sufficiently (still a work in progress, but coming along nicely). Too bad I couldn’t tag along for the movie. Maybe I’ll catch it on TV when it comes around. Hope my human still has that portable bowl for me to travel in. I do miss sitting on the coffee table watching the ball game… and sitting on the dining room table watching everyone eat… Boy, I do a lot of watching, don’t I? Maybe they should make a movie about that.

Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage enjoys a long-standing and accomplished volunteer association with Beacon House and its mission of service to Long Island’s homeless veterans and their families. This past spring, over 125 volunteer sales associates from offices across Long Island and Queens formed teams that spread across Beacon House’s housing sites and performed intensive house cleanups at seven sites for Coldwell Banker Annual Volunteer Day. Many of Coldwell Banker’s affiliated sales associates continue their relationship with the residence by providing holiday gifts and home cooked meals. This project is being followed by the commitment with an island-wide Hometown Heroes Linen Drive to collect 700 sets of new linens and bedding for homeless veterans living in Beacon House’s 34 sites. Blood Drive a Success
On one of the hottest and most humid days in July Legislator Leslie Kennedy, in conjunction with the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps and New York Blood Center, hosted a blood drive to replenish the depleted blood banks. All those who were gracious enough to give blood received two free Mets tickets to go see last Year’s National League Champs play at Citi Field. Despite the humidity and oppressive heat, it
was a successful day with sixty-two pints of blood collected. New York Blood Center performed well with the high volume of donors and made sure that each of them was properly taken care of. “Thank you to all the donors who gave lifesaving blood and thank you to the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps. for hosting this event at their facility, I hope all the donors enjoy their Mets tickets” said Legislator

Garden Creation As part of its efforts to more fully integrate their individuals within their communities, Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE), welcomed members of Girl Scout Troop #1196 of Smithtown to their residence for individuals with intellectual/ developmental disabilities. The Girl Scouts planted
a beautiful garden on the front lawn of the residence with stepping stones they created and flowers donated by Borella Nursery in Nesconset. The project is part their Girl Scout Bronze Award. Individuals in FREE’s residential programs receive skills development in such areas as socialization, recreation,
problem solving, personal development, activities of daily living, travel training, health care and medication maintenance, and many more. FREE provides residential services for individuals who are differently abled in over 100 communities, throughout Long Island and New York City.
Survivor Tree Planted
The celebration of our nation continued in the local community following this past Independence Day weekend. On Thursday, the 9/11 Responders Remembered Park Inc. held a special ceremony to commemorate the fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives on September 11th, 2001. Legislator Leslie Kennedy, accompanied by her husband, Suffolk County Comptroller John M. Kennedy, joined the organization at the Village Hall in the Village of the Branch to participate in the planting of the “Survivor Tree.” The Survivor Tree is a type of Pear tree decorated with American flags and ribbons that was planted into the ground outside the Village Hall. President Martin Aponte, as well as other members of the 9/11 Responders Remembered Park Inc., spoke at the event. They each discussed the important symbolic nature
that the tree represents. The essence of the Survivor Tree represents a remarkable story. Following the attacks on September 11th, 2001, a Callery Pear tree was discovered at Ground Zero somehow standing amongst the rubble. Its branches were burned and impaled from the aftermath of the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. The tree was removed from the site by first responders and replanted at the 9/11 Memorial in New York City after its recovery. The same type of tree was planted at the memorial park in the Village of the Branch. It stands as a constant reminder of resilience, revival and rebirth for our nation. Following the ceremony’s completion, Legislator Kennedy offered great praise for the organization, the Survivor Tree and all 9/11 victims/ first responders, “Still to this day the memory of all those who lost their
lives on 9/11 live on in our hearts. This tree acts as a symbol of how strong our community and our nation are under tremendous pain and adversity. It is such an honor to stand here with the Responders Remembered organization reflecting and remembering the heroes who sacrificed their lives on a day that will live in infamy in our nation’s history.” This September will mark the fifteenth anniversary since the attacks. The Survivor Tree offers constant proof that with each passing year the remembrance of all of the victims of 9/11 will continue to be honored. The Moriches Bay Project held their 2nd annual Oyster Fling in Westhampton Beach, where more than 300 guests enjoyed New Orleans themed fare prepared by Buoy One of Westhampton, Jazz music by Gotham Easy. They also participated a unique,

On a fair weather evening at the Nesconset Gazebo people of the community gathered to hear the first Nesconset Chamber of Commerce concert of the season, kicking things off with That 70’s Band preforming the show. A gigantic crowd had gathered for the show, and they were not disappointed. To kick off the festivities Abigail, Hannah and Brett, three students from Samoset Middle School, did the honor of singing
our National Anthem. As always, Long Island Cares was in attendance to collect food for those in need amongst our communities. In addition to the singing of the National Anthem, John Zollo of Smithtown also preferomed God Bless America prior to the concert, and the 4th Precinct Police Explorers presented our nation’s flag.
