Jewels and Jeans More than 300 guests recently attended the Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s festive “Jewels & Jeans” benefit dinner at Flowerfield in St. James, honoring three individuals with impressive achievements and service. Proceeds benefit WMHO educational programs, Youth Corps and historic properties. This year’s
honorees were: Bud Simmons, President of Budco Enterprises Inc. and founding director of the Master Riggers Association. In 2001, Bud installed over 2 million pounds of steel in less than 3 months to have the 1 and 9 subway lines open for the first anniversary of 9-11. Bud is involved in a multitude of organizations

They delivered the meals to the Saint James Church for their Wednesday food pantry event. Hobbs Farm, a non-profit, all-volunteer farm, was founded by Ann Pellegrino in 2007, with a mission to provide fresh produce to those in need through a network of local food pantries and programs. The Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Youth Corps, a volunteer group of youngsters 11 to 17 years old, literally created their own farm to table event recently to feed the homeless and families in need. All of their hard work took place at HeartBeet Farms which is located on the property of Bethel Hobbs Community Farm in Centereach. They actually incorporated the same method of farming used by Dr. Samuel Thompson, who lived at WMHO’s historic Thompson House during the 18th century, mixing clam shells into the soil for added calcium – an essential element for plant health. Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. to puzzle over before making their final decision. Now, it’s time to bridge this thought back to our daily lives and how a high degree and dedication to courage can change our daily lives. I am going to list a few based on my own experience and, after this, I’m sure you will be able to add some of your own. Let’s start ... Courage is: Being 15 years-old and contracting Polio at summer camp and, while in the hospital on the first night, overhearing one of the nurses saying that in the morning I would either be completely free of the disease or be restricted to a life of medicine. That alone took a great deal of courage to believe that everything was right and I would be okay in the morning. I was right. At 14 years-old, coming home from school and being told by your mother that your father had died that morning from a sudden and massive heart attack. It took all the courage I had to make sure my mother and brother would be okay and we would get through this together as a family. To get the news that your older brother fighting in the Korean war was captured and was now a prisoner ... it took several days of blind courage (and many phone
calls) to be told that he was freed, along with several others. What a relief. Much reflection and courage was needed while in the service to be promoted to a team leader. Knowing that I would be responsible for 15 soldiers’ lives in a combat situation ... and they all had faith in your leadership ability. It only took a few moments of thought to realize that I indeed had the courage to lead these troops on. In the end, it all worked out well with those concerned. One of the biggest tests of courage is having the ability to accept the challenges of the “golden years” and gracefully enter that domain without complaints, and having the courage to accept the daily challenges that it surely brings. As a final (yet very personal thought) just prior to sleeping, having the courage to review what happened that day, what was good and things not so good ... then hearing that quiet voice inside of you telling you that things will be better tomorrow, and having the courage to accept that. A bit corny? I don’t think so. Just remember that tomorrow will be the first day of the rest of your life. NEVER give up on your dreams, and always keep a positive attitude. PEACE.

If there is one thing we have all learned throughout our lives, it is that there are only so many aspects within our control; and even those few are questionable, at best. We can go through each day with a clear picture as to what we would like our life to be, but the reality is that this is the only true reality we know. The rest is mere wistfulness. This is why it is so important to appreciate each and every moment, those people we are fortunate to have in our lives, and to be grateful for the small miracles which surround us always. It’s difficult, to be sure, when you feel overwhelmed by life and whatever obstacles it might throw your way; but it takes such a minimal effort to stop
for a moment and appreciate a sunrise, a sunset, a butterfly, a blossom … anything, really. My column last week touched on the concept of leaving your day - or at least a portion of it - to chance, to not making a point of scheduling every second, to disconnecting from the socalled “obligations” of phone calls and e-mails and text messages, to refrain from mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds … to simply experience life as it was designed to be, in the flesh, ever present. I received quite a bit of feedback on this topic, with many sheepishly admitting they are guilty of precisely this on a regular basis. Several even went so far as to make a point of saying they wanted to try my experiment, even if just for a few hours. I’m curious to hear how it went, if any followed through.
Did you feel empty without all the chaos and manic energy surrounding you, pushing you forward from one selfimposed task to the next? Or was it somewhat fulfilling, perhaps allowing you a muchneeded breath of fresh air? Sometimes, in literally taking that breath, we can recapture a large piece of ourselves that we tend to lose to the daily grind. It grounds us, reminding us of the important things in life. And what is more important than finding happiness in the mundane, in making the most of our time, in savoring the memories before they have had a chance to fade ... Nothing, so far as I can tell. There is no fault in having aspirations and dreams; just remember that these days we are living presently are the stuff that dreams are made of as well.

Like most of you, I have been spellbound by the daily news regarding the young soccer players and their coach trapped deep underground in one of the many dangerous caves in the area. There was even a point a few days ago where the experts believed it would be too dangerous to move them, and one thought was even to leave them stranded for many weeks until the flood waters subsided. However, like all of you who watched the news, the whole world breathed a huge sigh of relief when the last of them was brought to safety. All of this effort had to be based upon a tremendous amount of courage from all concerned. Thinking about this, it prompted me to write a short piece on the subject of courage … something we all take for granted until it happens to us. Let’s go forward and study this together. While dictionaries can supply us with several definitions, the one that I like the most is: the abilty of the individual to act in a specific manner regardless of the potential outcome. Bridging this back to the mindset of the many divers and Navy Seals who were in charge of the rescue, just think for a moment of the potential actions and consequential results that they had

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta recognized John M. Bennett of Boy Scout Troop 7 at his recent Eagle Scout Court of Honor. John earned the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout by completing a labor intensive community based project at the Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown.

On Monday, the Nesconset community gathered to celebrate the renovations of Gibbs Pond Park. On Wednesday, the community in the hamlet of St James participated in the Gaynor Park & Veterans Memorial Park (Moriches Park) Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies. The Supervisor was joined by Town Councilman Tom McCarthy, Councilwoman Lynne Nowick, Councilwoman Lisa Inzerillo & Councilman Tom Lohmann, Legislator Leslie Kennedy, Legislator Rob Trotta, Comptroller John Kennedy, The Smithtown Parks Department, Public Safety Park Rangers along with the Nesconset Chamber, Nesconset Civic, the Civic Association of Greater St James, the St James Chamber of Commerce and local Community members. All three parks hadn’t seen major repairs in more than 15 years. “I made a promise when I was sworn in, to bring our parks here in Smithtown, back to their original charm. Additional concrete sidewalks have been added and the addition of a LED user friendly crosswalk is scheduled to be installed by the traffic safety department, to be complete this year.
