Each elementary school class wore different color clothing, representing six different types of cancer, to participate in the schoolwide walk-a-thon. The Bretton Woods faculty and students raised close to $1,400. Great job!

A few days ago, I found a tick on my arm. Yes, I know what you’re thinking, a tick! These small bloodsucking creatures are the stuff of nightmares for many of Fire Island’s inhabitants. The deer tick, the carrier of Lyme Disease, is arguably the most unsettling. This minuscule monster is known for staying hidden. Many people do not even realize they have been bitten. The deer tick is the smallest of all of the species that crawl around Fire Island. In addition to the notorious red ring of Lyme Disease, ticks can also transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Where could I have

gotten a tick? Yesterday, as I was unlocking my bike to ride to work, I noticed a tick crawling on the fence post it was chained to. Sure enough, as I looked at the seat of my bike, a ‘questing’ tick was waiting for a meal. These ticks wait on an overhanging leaf or vine until something brushes up against them. Then they latch on and take advantage of their new host. How can you avoid getting ticks? It isn’t easy to tell what shade of clothing is least conducive to fostering ticks. Studies show that wearing dark clothing results in slightly fewer ticks actually on you, but lighter clothing enables

you to see the ticks and ultimately refrain from getting bitten. Check yourself for lingering ticks when you leave their environment and, if at all possible, avoid trekking through their home in the first place. If you do find yourself bitten, it is best to find immediate medical help. It is easier to treat the diseases contracted from ticks right away. It is also very hard to diagnose these ailments at home. This summer, while you are out and about, remember that ticks are an ever-present danger and you cannot be too careful. Always use bugspray, and remember to check yourself for ticks constantly.

Making The Connection By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Fate is a funny thing. You either believe in it or you don’t, and you either allow it to dictate your path in life or you spend the majority of your time fighting against it. The choice is yours… or is it? People seem to have a habit of saying that things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately apparent at the moment, if ever. Timing, circumstance…

whatever the case may be, events have a way of working themselves out in such a way as to follow the trail of cause and effect, of coincidence and irony. And there we are in the middle, left trying to sort it all out. Sure, there are situations you may read more into, in your vain search for some kind of mystical, magical, cosmic connection, but others… well others you just simply can’t deny. They just are, blatantly and undeniably, obvious

for all but the most cynical among us to see – and to appreciate. If only we could see these instances for what they are, while they are occurring. Perhaps we could save ourselves a certain degree of unnecessary stress and aggravation, anguish and upheaval. If only… unfortunately, though, it often takes hindsight to gain that type of perspective. Life as we know it is, quite simply, just never that crystal clear.

On Thursday, July 11th, the Rotary Club Of Smithtown-Sunrise had as their guest speaker, Walter Wisniewski, who’s presentation was on Music and Memory. Key points illustrated today were that studies have proven that music reduces stress and depression in addition to enhancing the memory in Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients. Nursing homes and care givers across the country are using memory to help the elderly. During his presentation Walter discussed his personal

experiences with the program and explained Music and Memory’s mission and impact on the community. As a concert pianist, Mr. Wisniewski has donated his time to play in different elderly care facilities, and he has witnessed firsthand the true impact of music. Music and Memory is close to his heart, and he has been involved with the organization for several years. Music and Memory is a non-profit organization founded by Dan Cohen, that brings personalized

Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature in conjunction with the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce introduced the Bill Joel tribute band, Songs In The Attic, recently at the Nesconset Gazebo in front of a packed crowd of over 700 people. Many showed to hear the tribute to Long Islands cultural icon Billy Joel. The nights performance began with the singing of the National Anthem sung by Leane Rutigliano from Longwood Junior High School. Long Island Cares collaborated with Legislator Kennedy and the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce in order to collect food for the needy.

A plethora of food was gathered as always from our generous Smithtown residents who came to enjoy the concert. The Knights of Columbus were attendance promoting Operation Care Package, which is a charitable operation with the aim of sending care packages to troops in Afghanistan. The Knights of Columbus were able to collect over $1,100, which will be used to buy items soldiers need such as body wash, deodorant, and eye drops. “I would like to thank everyone who came out for the concert yesterday, and he would like to thank everyone for their generous donations to Long Island Cares, and

the Knights of Columbus.” said Legislator Kennedy, “I was happy to see everyone enjoying themselves at the Nesconset Gazebo yesterday, and I am glad that we can come together as a community to enjoy the Billy Joel tribute and to help out the troops and the hungry”. Next weeks concert will feature Dec8dia, performing music from the 1980s. Scouts To The Rescue Bright and early, at 9 a.m., more than 40 scouts from Troops 3, 214 and 349 gathered at the culverts over the Northeast branch of the Nissequogue River to kick off the 1st Annual Clean the Stream effort, sponsored by the Office of Legislator John Kennedy, Mr. Rich Kitt of the Smithtown Department of Environment and Waterways, VOB Trustee Mark Delaney and an ample supply of motivated adult Scout Leaders. The mission was simple. Following the ravages of Hurricane Sandy and the Blizzard of February, 2013, many tree limbs had fallen and blocked sections of the Branch. This important waterway serves not only as a natural habitat to the only indigenous Trout population on Long Island, but also to largemouth bass and other species of fish, as well as various species of turtle. In addition to being a robust natural habitat for animal and plant life, the Branch serves as the primary conduit for surface water runoff for the surrounding hundreds of homes in the area. Less than three years ago, the Smithtown Supervisor and Town Board collaborated with the County of Suffolk, under the authority of the State Department of Environmental Conservation to engage in a highly successful stream clearance and silt remediation project that saw over 200 yards of runoff and silt buildup removed from the lower 4000 feet of the Branch. At a total price tag of approximately $1 million, half of which

was underwritten by the county, this project has served to transport larger volumes of water during heavy and sustained periods of precipitation. That greater volume of water transport leads to direct relief for homeowner basement flooding, septic system compromise, and overall difficulty for impacted residents.

Seeking to maintain the positive benefits achieved buy this earlier project, Troop 349 Eagle Scout and Legislative Office summer intern Thomas Kotak proposed the cleanup project to Legislator Kennedy as a simple way to maintain the positive benefits of earlier government intervention. In true Eagle fashion, Tom got right to work in contacting involved Town and county agencies for necessary approvals and consents, and quickly pulled

together scouts at all levels, who were only too eager to jump in the water and get to work. Suffolk County Vector Control Director Dominick Ninivaggi provided important bug repellent, gloves, trash bags, and appropriate marsh gear, while all brought along a wide array of shovels, rakes and other needed gear. Scout leaders and older scouts were even supported with a flat bottomed boat supplied by Mr. Kitt from the Town DEW. “I was very impressed with Tom’s organizational skills, and his smooth way of directing Scouts and parents to needed areas of clearance,” said Legislator Kennedy. However, it should have been no surprise, as Boy Scouts are true stewards of the environment, and always strive to leave a campsite or gathering spot cleaner than when they found it. Most debris was removed to the banks, careful not disturb any of the natural ground cover. Larger downed trees were reported to the appropriate Town agencies, for removal with heavier equipment in the future. Mr. Kitt was quite thankful, and noted that the thousands of feet of stream cleared would definitely help to preserve good flow throughout the summer and fall. By 1 p.m., all were fairly well worn out, with much debris cleared and garbage collected. It was a major success, and we look forward to gathering again next summer to keep up the maintenance.
