Kennedy, Jr., and the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce continued the 2014 Free Summer Concert Series Tuesday night with “Songs In The Attic,” playing everyone’s favorite Billy Joel songs from Piano Man to We Didn’t Start The Fire to My Life and Movin’ Out. Host A Fresh Air Child Continued From 2

Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s ReStore, located in Ronkonkoma, has been successful in raising funds for its affordable home building program for the past eight years. The success of the ReStore is only possible through the generous donations of building materials and supplies from local businesses on Long Island. Habitat Suffolk has been fortunate to be on the receiving end of thousands of donations from many individuals in addition

to hundreds of small and large businesses that help the organization grow and become more successful each year. One of ReStore’s most valuable partners is Costello’s Ace Hardware. For the past three years, they have supported Habitat Suffolk’s mission with a continuous flow of donated merchandise and several in-store promotions, including the Bonide Fertilizer donation, which helped raise substantial funds

for Habitat projects. This spring, Bonide donated a portion of the proceeds of their lawn fertilizer sales sold in Costello’s Ace Hardware’s 21 stores. The ReStore and Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk thanks Costello’s Ace Hardware and Bonide for their support, and hopes that other businesses follow their lead in promoting the affordable home building programs on Long Island.

There’s something to be said for nostalgia, even the not-so-distant-past variety. I have a hard time viewing cultural happenings, music and movies from the 90’s as “classic” - however, when you realize that some of these momentous occasions are approaching their 15 and 20year anniversaries, well that gives things a whole new perspective. Recently, the National Geographic channel premiered a new miniseries focusing on this particular decade, causing many from my generation to take a step back and realize that some of those things that seemed like “just yesterday” in fact

occurred many yesterdays ago. Perhaps part of the reason behind this time lapse of sorts is the fact that many of my fellow late 20-somethings and early 30-somethings still live at home, in the same town in which they attended high school and football games, local bars and beaches, and continue to socialize with the same circle of close knit friends from their school days. Essentially, not much has changed – so it seems positively mind-blowing to think that nearly two decades have elapsed. Ah, but they have. And none of us is getting any younger in the process. A sobering thought, isn’t it? Of course, in reality,

much has changed. The world as a whole, to start, straight on down to the local neighborhood streets we used to casually stroll along. To think that reunions have come and gone, friends have married (and, in some cases divorced), and are in the process of raising children and buying homes of their own – “growing up,” as they say – well, it had to happen eventually. Personally, I enjoy a good trip down memory lane as much as the next person. It’s fun to reflect upon the people who have graced our lives, the person you were and the one you still hope to become. Nostalgia or no, there’s still plenty of time to rewrite the story along the way!

Responding to an increased demand to supply supplemental food to children who rely on school lunch programs, but may not get enough to eat when school is in summer recess, Island Harvest Food Bank today announced that it has expanded its Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to 50 sites across Long Island. Last year the SFSP served 38,500 meals to 2,215 children through 28 sites in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Ten residents from St. Johnland Nursing Center participated in the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center’s Annual Art Expression Program Tea & Art Exhibit. The exhibit showcases the remarkable and creative efforts of the residents of 27 facilities located on Long Island

who are suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. These artists created the artwork between September 2013 and March 2014 as part of ADRC’s Art Expression Program, where ADRC staff members worked with the staff members and residents at the different facilities to bring

their creative thoughts to life. The artwork was then brought to ADRC in Bay Shore, where it is on display with a biography and photo of each artist. The paintings will are on display and available for sale, with all proceeds benefiting ADRC’s Art Expression Program.

Kennedy, Jr., and the Nesconset Chamber of Commerce continued the 2014 Free Summer Concert Series Tuesday night with “Songs In The Attic” playing everyone’s favorite Billy Joel songs from Piano Man to We Didn’t Start the Fire to My Life and Moving Out. Fleming, Director of the Southold Historical Society and author of several books and catalogs on the history and art of Long Island. Family Comes First From an early age, I have been raised with a certain code of morals. I have always been guided toward “being the bigger man” and making smart choices. I’ve always been expected to look out for my little brother, act as a second man of the house, and protect those who need protection. This code of conduct has been instilled in me through the diligent work of my parents. Although they have always made sure I was capable of handling myself, they are not helicopter parents. They kept their distance, preferring to test my competence rather than nurture a dependent child. I like to think that this style worked out. I attribute my personal character to their efforts. I was their first child.

They call me their “experiment,” but it seems like they knew what they were doing. After all, I’m still alive! Although it would be great if each baby came with an owner’s manual, that is not the case. There is no personalized guide to raising a life. That is why I have the utmost respect for my parents. As my mom grew up in the Ukraine, she was not afforded the generous opportunities that I am. Her upbringing has taught me to seize every chance. When the opportunity arose for me to write in a newspaper, she pushed me to take it. All of this has built my character and molded me into the person I need to be. In order to conquer the world as I move through my life, I try to apply the

life lessons handed down from my parents. My mannerisms, persona, outlook and mentality have all been influenced by my mom and dad. My dad is, and always has been, concerned with hard work. He grew up knowing the value of effort. He prodded me into getting a job when I was just thirteen. It was my idea, rooted in his morals. I have always tried to make my parents proud. However, they are truly responsible for making me the man I am today. I will always treasure my parents. They are the people who shaped me. They are solely responsible for nurturing me. I will always cherish the unconditional love and support that can only come from one source...Family.

The new Wyandanch Youth Center Chorus is a children’s ensemble that has been created this year by Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts. The program is one part of Usdan’s initiative to support arts education on Long Island and in the Boroughs. The Chorus presented its first concert on June 10th at the Wyandanch Family Life Center where the 50-member group, consisting of first to fifth graders, performed classical, Broadway, folk and contemporary pop music. Composers included Rodgers and Hammerstein, Woody Guthrie, Bobby McFerrin and Pharrell Williams. The choral director is Melody Hall, the Assistant Teacher for Usdan’s Junior Chorus. The accompanying pianist was Andres Maldonado. The Wyandanch

New Children’s Ensemble Youth Center Chorus is a partnership of Usdan Center and the Family Life Center/Wyandanch Youth Center. It was established to give children a positive choral experience and since January, rehearsals have been held twice a week. The program is sponsored by Russell Albanese, a new member of Usdan Center’s Leadership Council and an awardwinning “Green” real estate developer. Mr. Albanese is currently building Wyandanch Village, a major revitalization project in the area. In addition to his sponsorship of the Chorus, Albanese has underwritten scholarships for selected chorus members to study music at Usdan during the 2014 summer season. Dale Lewis, Executive Director of Usdan Center, says of the new project,

“We are enormously excited by this initiative which is enabling us to bring the arts into the lives of a new community of children. We are grateful to Mr. Albanese for making it possible.” At the helm of his family’s 64 year-old real estate development business, Russell Albanese has more than 30 years experience in planning, designing and constructing office and residential buildings, much of it focused on making those projects environmentally sustainable. The Albanese Organization built the country’s first certified green residential buildings in Battery Park City in 2003, and in 2008 the firm opened the 33-story Visionaire in Lower Manhattan, which garnered a Platinum LEED rating. The company

also transformed the 110,000-square-foot office building at 1001 Franklin Ave. in Garden City, the first Long Island multi-tenant office building to be totally retrofitted for LEED certification. In 2012, Russell Albanese was honored by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Long Island chapter. The Wyandanch Family Life Center, Inc., directed by Jeanine Reynolds, focuses on the social and educational development of children, and on providing a safe place for children to learn and play. In furtherance of that mission the Center also operated the Wyandanch Youth Center, with a variety of sports and social activities for children and their families. Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts (www.usdan. com), counts among its

alumni actors Natalie Portman, Olivia Thirlby and Jackie Hoffman, and singers Jane Monheit and Mariah Carey. It has introduced the arts to more than 60,000 TriState Area children since its founding in 1968. The Center is open to all young people from age 6 to 18. No audition is needed for most programs – rather, admission is based on an expression of interest in the arts. Each summer, 1,600 students are transported to the Center in air-conditioned buses each day. One-third of Usdan’s students attend on scholarship. Although the mission of the Center is for every child to establish a relationship with the arts, the unique stimulation of the Center has caused many to go on to arts careers. Alumni include members of Broadway shows and major music, theater, and

dance ensembles such as the Boston Pops and the New York City Ballet. A special feature of each student’s program is the Center’s series of daily assemblies known as the Festival Concerts. These are short educational performances by distinguished artist and by Usdan students as well. In addition to its regular programs, Usdan offers special opportunities for advanced high schoolage performing artists in music and dance. Major Grant Received Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society (“HOBAS”) is pleased to announce that the Chapter is the recipient of a $39K grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (“USFWS”) to begin a habitat restoration project, in partnership with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), at Underhill Preserve, located in Jericho. In addition, the Chapter also received a $5K grant from Long Island Invasives Species Management Area (“LIISMA”) to hire a consultant to conduct invasive species mapping and write a management plan. In October 2002, after many years of efforts, New York State, Nassau County and the Town of Oyster Bay acquired 50 acres of

the environmentallysensitive land in a statedesignated Special Groundwater Protection Area above the county’s sole source aquifer. Added to the existing 25-acre Oyster Bay Town preserve, the 75-acre Underhill Preserve was established. The preserve was never opened to the public and since then the property has severely degraded. Invasive species such as autumn and russian olive, multiflora rose, Japanese honeysuckle, mile-a-minute, porcelain berry, garlic mustard and others have invaded the fields, woods, and trails, thereby reducing habitat for birds, butterflies (including the iconic monarch, a species in steep decline) and other wildlife. The funds from this grant will address the grassland, meadow and

shrubland areas of the preserve, in order to restore and create critical habitat for wildlife, while protecting the native plant species found in the preserve. Ten species of NYS threatened and endangered plants have been documented in Underhill by the consultant hired by HOBAS in 2013 to conduct a comprehensive botanical survey, with a total of approximately 350 plant species confirmed. Over 100 species of birds have been documented as well as the Eastern box turtle, a NYS listed species. The chapter is currently conducting breeding bird surveys in the preserve to add to the general avian data compiled thus far. Says HOBAS president Stella Miller, “Advocates for this preserve spent almost a decade

fighting to save it from development. This was an important and necessary first step. With invasive plant species threatening so many of our preserves, it is equally vital that these preserves be managed in a way that will maintain ecological diversity and health. We are pleased to receive funding that will help facilitate efforts to restore, create and protect critical bird and butterfly habitat. In the past five years we have observed a steep decline in the birds and butterflies using the preserve as the habitat has degraded.” She continues, “We look forward to working with the NYSDEC and the surrounding community in the upcoming years as we work to restore and maintain habitat for the protection of wildlife and the enjoyment of the public.”

Heather Amster, Real Property Supervisor for the NYSDEC, says, “Through HOBAS’s outreach, interest and efforts the Preserve will receive some longdue attention and TLC. The Department looks forward to working with HOBAS in the coming months and years to restore and maintain the Preserve’s important grass and shrub-lands. We thank the chapter for their efforts on behalf of the Preserve, the Department and the People of the State of New York.” Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society is a chapter of the National Audubon Society, serving over 1,000 members in Huntington and Northern Oyster Bay Townships. The organization works to protect wildlife and preserve habitat through
