U.S. Air Force Airman Jonathan Reichfield graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San AntonioLackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Reichfield is the son of Susan and Glenn Reichfield of Boynton Beach, Fla. He is a 2015 graduate of Half Hollow Hills High School West, Dix Hills.

The Matinecock District of the Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America, held its annual fellowship dinner and presentation of the Spark Plug and District Award of Merit recognitions on Thursday, May 27th at the Elks Lodge in Huntington. The Matinecock Scouting District serves 2,027 youth members in the Town of Huntington and in Commack, Kings
presentations Three scouting volunteers in the Matinecock District that received the District Award of Merit for outstanding service to Boy Scouting, their local community, and to their religious affiliation were recognized during special ceremonies as the highlight of the evening. Escorted by previous recipients of this prestigious award
and presented with a plaque and a blue and silver recognition “knot”/ patch to be worn on their scouting uniforms. From the Matinecock District, those recognized this year are all Cub Scout Roundtable Staff members in addition to their other volunteer scouting obligations. Recognized were Debbie Trifon, Eve Kossman and Keith Josephson.

This past 4th of July weekend, my friend and I decided to take a road trip out to Montauk Point. Having recently realized that we had never been to this summer hotspot during the actual summer months, a busy holiday weekend seemed like the ideal time to go. Armed with a handful of late 90’s teen pop CDs and my trusty iPhone navigation system, we headed out. Of course, Long Island traffic is a force to be reckoned with on any normal day; add to it a two-lane road with speed limits ranging from 55 to 25 mph, throw in a few unfamiliar tourist types - and you have yourself a solid two-hour journey to contend with, at least. At one point, as traffic
crept to a complete standstill, my dear Siri piped up and suggested an “alternate” route, one that would allegedly save 25 minutes from the journey. Not having had the best of luck in the past with these detours, I was initially hesitant. But, looking ahead at the long line of vehicles, I figured, what was the harm. Approximately 45 minutes later, and two side trips through the residential roads of Bridgehampton, and then East Hampton, we emerged back on Montauk Highway, back in the same line of traffic. So much for that. After (finally) arriving at the famous Lobster Roll luncheonette, we were met with the expected hour-long

wait, somewhat alleviated by spending time taking pictures in front of the original sign and marveling at some of the patrons attempting to navigate the pebble-filled parking lot in high heels. The food was, as always, worth the wait - and we promptly decided that dinner would most likely not be necessary, as we couldn’t imagine eating another thing for at least another three days or so. We finished up and headed on the next leg of our journey, the famous lighthouse, the self-proclaimed “End of the World.” Coming next week: The End. {Part II}

Mr. Burton was awarded a one-time scholarship in the amount of $1,000 from Gershow Recycling. As a leading environmental recycling company, Gershow awards the competitive scholarship to graduating seniors who have displayed exemplary efforts in the fields of environmental science or engineering while in high school and plan to continue to pursue higher education degrees in either of these programs.
Timothy Harry Pamlanye of Ronkonkoma recently graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point, NY. Pamlanye earned a Bachelor of Science degree and an officer’s commission in the U.S. armed forces. He also earned a Merchant Marine officer license, qualifying him to serve as an officer on any ship in the U.S. flag merchant marine. The United States Merchant Marine Academy is a federal service academy
that educates and graduates licensed Merchant Marine officers. In addition to the rigorous academic and physical requirements for admission, applicants must be nominated by their Congressman or Senator. All USMMA graduates earn both a B.S. degree and a merchant marine license and incur an obligation to serve the United States. The U.S. Flag Merchant Marine – manned by U.S. merchant mariners – is essential for securing the country’s commerce in
peacetime and delivering warfighters, weapons, and military supplies in times of conflict. The majority of “Kings Pointers” will serve as Navy reservists in the Strategic Sealift Officer Program while working aboard U.S. flag vessels; others will serve on active duty in our nations’ armed forces. As part of his four year education, Pamlanye spent one year training as a cadet aboard ocean going vessels.
Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern collected toys for children of the brave men and women of our armed forces, Reserves and National Guard to mark the “Month of the Military Child.” Thanks to the generous response of members
of our community, and the assistance of Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), in Huntington, Legislator Stern was able to donate toys to the Northport VA for distribution to our military families. The “Month of the Military Child” was
established by the United States Department of Defense to recognize and honor military families and their children for the daily sacrifices they make and the challenges they overcome before, during and after their parents’ deployments.

New Eagle Honored Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for his constituent, Nicholas Cacioppo, of Boy Scout Troop 539. Nicholas earned 26 Merit Badges ranging from Athletics to Soil and Water Conservation. For his community service project, Nicholas restored a 1962 Willys
M38A1 medical jeep by removing all of the rust and painting it, as well as getting the engine to run. He also built a prefab carport to house the jeep, which is on display at the VA Hospital in Northport. “Becoming an Eagle Scout is a testament to your character and leadership skills and is something that you have
accomplished while still a teenager. This recognition will stay with you for the rest of your life and can never be taken from you,” said Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta. “What you have done is very impressive and we will expect great things from you in the future,” added Legislator Trotta.

Magic Aid Donation
Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Bronze Award Project Adventureland’s Helping Hands Foundation donated $1,000 to the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Troop 239, out of Huntington Station, to assist them with their Bronze Award Community Service Project. To educate the public about recycling, the scouts collected plastic caps and lids from local elementary schools. These items were then recycled to create beautiful benches that will be placed throughout the South Huntington School
District. The funds donated by The Helping Hands Foundation assisted the troop in covering the production and shipping costs of the bench. In total, Troop 239 has prevented over 1,200 pounds of plastic caps and lids from being littered or ending up in a landfill. Last week, Troop 239 held a bench unveiling ceremony at Birchwood Intermediate School, since they dedicated the bench to a third-grade student
who passed away suddenly this past year. The “Buddy Bench” will be located on the playground, and children who feel lonely or sad can sit on the bench and a “buddy” will approach them and try to cheer them up. Last week, Adventureland’s Helping Hands Foundation donated $1,000 and a variety of magic tricks to Magic Aid, a nonprofit organization that teaches the children at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital magic. Founded by medical student David Elkin in 2007, Magic Aid helps relieve the stress children experience with hospitalization by performing and teaching magic to young patients. Dedicated to bridging
magic and medicine through the use of magic therapy, David and his team are striving to enhance the quality of care provided to patients, one card trick at a time. Funds were raised through Adventureland Employees’ Water Bottle Recycling Program, and matched by the Helping Hands Foundation. The donation will go towards training other doctors and Magic Aid members sleight of hand, and purchasing
tricks that the children can take home with them. David Elkin stopped by Adventureland last week to show some of the Adventureland staff and the Helping Hands Foundation board members and their families how a little magic can go a long way. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
