Eight students from Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District were recently recognized for their exceptional foreign language skills. The Long Island Language Teachers held an original poetry contest and the seventh grade students in foreign language teacher Maria DiLiberto’s class took home the top prizes. For their original

poems in Italian, Thomas Natale placed first, Joseph Lamardo took second and Isabella Dantuono came in third in the contest. In the Spanish poetry contest, Abigail Jung placed first and Madhur Dyal was named the second-place winner. In a local essay contest sponsored by the Sons & Daughters of Italy in Smithtown, three Accompsett Middle School

students took top honors. The essays, which were written in English, were filled with details about a family member whose roots were in Italy. The three winners were Haley Sasbon (first place), Carlie Tockarshewsky (second place) and Isabella Spilotros (third place). They each received monetary prizes and will be honored at a ceremony on July 11.

The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. After featuring a powerful testimonial last week, I’d like to feature another testimonial this week to show just how much of an impact the work of this organization has on the Long Island community. One thankful Long Island resident that has received help from RTLI said, “Your organization is truly a blessing to people like me who have no one and no finances at all to ever cover all the fixings. You’ve made it possible for me to have some peace of mind so I can still be able to stay in my home, the only “roots” I know.”

1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! Volunteers from PSEG Long Island are really cooking. Recently, some of the utility’s Transmission and Distribution control room operators, including Luke Williams of Commack, prepared a brunch spread for nearly 100 guests at Ronald McDonald House of Long Island (RMHLI). At least once a month, employees from the utility volunteer to cook for families staying at the notfor-profit facility while their children receive hospital care nearby. Hauling in nearly 100 eggs and all the fixings for a protein-packed meal, the team converged on the two adjacent RMHLI kitchens and filled the rooms with the same kind of focused energy they bring to operating the electrical grid. When all was said and done, the group presented a buffet of scrambled eggs, waffles and pancakes, bacon and sausage, fresh fruit salad, chicken Caesar

salad, fresh croissants and muffins, bringing families together from throughout the facility. Guests appreciated the meal provided by PSEG Long Island volunteers and the volunteers appreciated the opportunity to make life a little better for families in a stressful situation. “Volunteering at Ronald McDonald House has been an amazing experience,” said Williams, PSEG Long Island employee/Commack resident. “This building is beautiful. team next semester. Her lengthy volunteer resume includes team captain for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and student body liaison for the Sounds of Silence 5k/10k run/walk. Chen was a Newfield fencing and soccer captain who also excelled academically, finishing as class valedictorian. He will be going to Yale in the fall. Chen also participated in a pre-college program at Stony Brook University where he performed on the piano and learned music theory. He also volunteered at Stony Brook Hospital and tutored other Newfield students.

Michael Chacon and Daniel Jiritano were presented with their Wood Badge Beads, neckerchief, woggle and certificate in a special ceremony at the Boy Scout Troup 125’s annual summer barbeque at Schubert Beach in Nissequogue on Saturday, June 22, 2019. This recognition was the culmination of a combination “learning/ hands-on applications” time management and Leadership training course that is available to its adult Scouting volunteer leaders by the Boy Scouts of America. Commack resident, Mr. Chacon is Committee Chairman of Troop 125.

Mr. Jiritano of Kings Park is an Assistant Scoutmaster with the troop. They participated in six days of outdoors sessions in Wood Badge Course # N2-404-17 for the group participation/ instructional section, held at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp in September 2017 and Schiff Scout Reservation in October 2017. In order to complete the training, the Scouting volunteer leaders had to apply what they learned in a variety of self-directed goals (the practical part of the course) within 18 months, which was accomplished in 2019. This was the “Wood Badge

for the 21st Century -- a new and updated Wood Badge Course, which was in place since 2001”. Mr. Chacon and Mr. Jiritano were each presented with their Wood Badge Neckerchiefs, Wood Badge Beads, a woggle (special neckerchief slide), and a certificate indicating their name and Wood Badge Course number and personal ID. In addition, they were presented with certificates of congratulations on completion of their Wood Badge Scouting Leader Training on behalf of the Clan McLaren Society of North America, Ltd.
