This was once a summer town where streets could wind unpaved, unbound by keep off signs and plush sod strips and paths were laid by barefoot trips to splintered piers as rusting traps awaited blue claws’ August laps; while boats moored fast to marshes’ edge would lie in wait concealed in sedge for ducks to sail their V shaped wedge; where clammers toiled, each rake applied knee deep to race an ebbing tide; while baited lines on a silt-soft shore reels spinning fast were cast once more; where shacks leaned south to taste the bay, shingles bleaching brown to gray; and boat yards hugged each sheltered lee when gales pruned clean each proud elm tree. This was once a summer town; few streets remain unpaved, unbound.

The Highlight Reel By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As we head into the 4th of July holiday, allow me to share some excerpts of a column from the archives, written back in the fall of 2005, just a few short months after I began my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers… I met Don Mattingly. No, let me elaborate…I didn’t just meet him; I interviewed him, one-onone, for a solid fifteen minutes. Don Mattingly, one of my favorite players of all time…a living legend. And I did it while working for this very newspaper. The opportunity came about after I received an e-mail at work regarding a local autographsigning event. My initial reaction? When I went home that day, I excitedly announced to my mother, “I want to go! Wouldn’t that be cool? I can get his autograph!” My mother just looked at me, perplexed, and said, “You can cover it, can’t you? You

work for the paper, remember?” Oh. Right. The next day, I contacted the public relations firm that had put out the press release and was told that, yes, they would love for someone from our paper to cover the event, and would I maybe like to speak with Mr. Mattingly prior to the signing? Would I?! Was that even a question? By the time Mattingly arrived at the event, the line was already stretched around the building, with more people arriving every minute, and so I was forced to wait until the very end to do the interview. It was worth the wait. Once the crowd dispersed, the few people remaining headed into the back of the store where more items were lined up for Mattingly to sign for charity. A girl who worked for his agent explained to him who I was and would he mind answering a few questions while he signed? “No, not at all,” he replied in that soft Indiana accent of his, and motioned for me to stand next to him at the table.

I proceeded to go down my list of questions. To my pleasant surprise, Mattingly answered each one thoroughly, pausing to consider his answers first, and then carefully explained his responses in great detail – definitely not your typical 15-second sound bite. It was as if I had known him for years. He was a true gentleman, full of class, and extremely humble. The image absolutely matched the reality. Considering he had just been signing autographs for a solid three hours – twice as long as scheduled – he gave no impression of being bothered by any of it, no impression of being “above” such things as an interview with a local paper that he had probably never heard of. On the way home that night, my mother asked, “So, did you ever imagine you would have the chance to interview Don Mattingly while working for your hometown paper? Never in my wildest dreams.

Badminton Championships The 2014 YONEX U.S. Open Badminton Championships, a BWFsanctioned Grand Prix Gold Series Tournament arrives on the Michael J. Grant Campus of Suffolk County Community College from July 8th -13th. The major international badminton tournament - a first of its kind on the East Coast of the United States - will be hosted at the College’s Health, Sports and Education Center field house in Brentwood, NY. The 2014 YONEX US Open Championships, a BWF-sanctioned Grand Prix Gold Series Tournament, will award a total prize purse of $120,000 and is one of only 11 Grand Prix Gold tournaments world-wide according to officials. centers. “Ms. Economou has certainly demonstrated a commitment to serving the seniors of Suffolk County and is truly an outstanding member of the community. I applaud her volunteer spirit,” said Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta.

Commack High School senior Matthew O’Connell is a Regional Finalist (North America) in the Google Science Fair, a global online science and technology competition open to individuals and teams from ages 13 to 18. Matthew is one of 90 Regional Finalists worldwide, and one of ten regional finalists from the US and Canada. “Standing out amongst thousands of entries, these projects are bursting with the potential to change the world,” according to Google’s announcement. Matthew’s project, the “Development of a Computer-Based MultiSensory System to Better Relay Pharmacotherapy Information,” has won recognition in other contests as well, including Intel’s International Science and Engineering Fair and at

the FIP (International Pharmaceutical Federation) World Congress. “I created a system to relay prescription information via visual representation, audio instruction, and translated text. The program has direct application for providing medication instruction to populations in distress as groups such as Doctors without Borders must. My program takes medication instructions and relays them through three mediums of communication: textual, visual, and audio. Whereas, current methods only satisfy one component: textual, and even though prescribers can write prescriptions, they cannot translate the information to the degree that my program can. The output files of my program relay information in three

ways: a label, calendar, and storyboard. The first goes on a medication’s container and the latter two are provided as handouts for the patient to take back with them to his/ her home.” At this point, Matthew’s software program has been downloaded over 700 times in more than 80 countries. The medical professionals are helping by testing the program as well as adding new terms and languages for his databases. Matthew is also nominated for a Google Science Fair Computer Science Award of $25,000 and a year of mentoring for a project that shows outstanding and innovative work in the field of computer science. On August 16th, Google will be announcing 15 Global Finalists. Hoping Matthew is one of them!

Regional Finalist

Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr. Chairman of the Suffolk County Legislature’s Republican Caucus attended a rare triple Eagle Scout Court of Honor at the Smithtown Historical Society on June 29th. This unique Court of Honor was made possible by the hard work of three special scouts, Daniel Darsillo, Antonio Perciavalle and Quinn Sengstaken, whose diligence, dedication and leadership skills were all put to the test as they reached the apex of scouting. In order to qualify for an Eagle Scout Court of Honor, a scout must undertake a community based project from planning through execution, with only minimal assistance from outside of the Troop. Troop 888, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Nesconset and St. James, has a

long and rich tradition of turning out highly qualified Eagle Scouts, who have all gone on to wonderfully futures, never forgetting the qualities and lessons taught to them while they were scouts. Quinn, a recent graduate of Smithtown High School West, updated a map showing the location of buildings on the grounds of the Smithtown Historical Society, and constructed a kiosk housing the map display, located in the main parking area for all guests to use. Daniel, who will be attending Cornell in the Fall, constructed a handicap ramp and revitalized a brick walkway at Judge J. Lawrence Smith Homestead at the Historical Society. Antonio, who is a Junior at Smithtown West and is a member of the National Honor Society,

Rothfeld who will retire from the District effective August 31st, 2014. “I am honored to have this exciting opportunity to serve as assistant superintendent in the Hauppauge School District

– the place I have called my professional home for the past 19 years,” stated Tasman. “I look forward to continuing to provide the high-quality, professional services of my predecessors to all students, teachers, staff and community members as well as to developing new systems and procedures that will benefit all Hauppauge constituents.” Tasman has served as the District’s director of Health, Physical Education, Family and Consumer Science, Recreation and Athletics since 2002. He began his career in the District in 1995 as a physical education teacher at Hauppauge High School and later worked at Bretton Woods Elementary School. At Hauppauge, Tasman coached the Eagles JV football, JV boys basketball, Varsity bowling

and Varsity baseball teams. As the Varsity baseball coach, he led Hauppauge to two Suffolk County Championships and several league titles. Tasman additionally serves as chairperson of the District’s Comprehensive Health and Wellness Committee and is a member of the Hauppauge Educational Foundation. As a member of the Suffolk County Athletic Director’s Association, he has been a key player in Section XI, Suffolk’s governing body for interscholastic athletics and also has served on the Seeding, Modified and Policy committees. Tasman received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Salisbury University in 1992 and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Stony Brook University in 1997.

Team Leader, Captain Harrow stepped on a pressurized IED while performing combat operations in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan on May 15th, 2012. The IED vaporized his right leg, tore away most of his right forearm and fingers, and caused the amputation of his left leg above the knee. Through perseverance, determination and pure will, Captain Harrow was

released from the hospital after two months and has continued a grueling rehabilitation process since then. At this time, a new home is being constructed to fit the needs of his new way of life. He will need an entire handicapped accessible home, which is extremely costly. The Suffolk PBA was honored to attend and contribute towards Captain Harrow’s new home.

Crossfit Fundraiser

Raising Funds Girl Scout Megan Babbino raised $5,700 for The Children’s Center at UCP of Suffolk as her Gold Award Project. Babbino, who has cerebral palsy and who was a former student at The Children’s Center, held a big fundraiser at Del Fuego Restaurant in June which was attended by more than 100 people. The fundraiser included silent and live auctions, face paintings, a pie eating contest, live music and an all you can eat and drink special. The money raised will be used to purchase a butterfly memorial plaque that will display the names of students that have passed on as well as other educational services. “Her fundraising efforts

proved to be a success as Megan was able to raise about $5,700 which will benefit our current and future students and will be a great remembrance for the students who have been a part of our program in the past,” Sherri Glazer, Principal and Director of Educational Services of The Children’s Center at UCP of Suffolk said. “I think that what she did was phenomenal because it was a large project that was extremely successful and she was energetic and enthusiastic during it all.” Babbino, a 15 year-old junior at Hauppauge High School, participated in The Children’s Center’s preschool program and said that she has nothing

but great memories of her time at the school. “The Children’s Center helped make me the person I am today,” Babbino said. “They have done so much for me and I wanted to do something for them.” Babbino and Glazer are in the process of picking out a memorial plaque and its unveiling will take place in the fall. Babbino said that she was more than happy to give back. “This whole thing was an amazing thing to do,” she said. “It was a lot of work, but it was fulfilling and well worth it. Doing a project like this teaches you life skills and it makes you a better person.”

On Saturday, June 28th, the Brother of Mine - a new not-for-profit organization created to assist our military men and women in time of need, held a fundraiser at Crossfit Smithtown. The purpose of the fundraiser was to raise money towards the cost of a handicap accessible home for Captain Ben Harrow of Great Neck. A West Point graduate and Army Special Forces

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education has notified Suffolk County Community College that the College remains fully accredited and has been taken off warning based upon the proof submitted by the College documenting full compliance with the Middle States’ requirements Suffolk was warned in 2012 that it had not produced evidence that it

was in compliance with two of the Commission’s 14 accreditation standards: Standard 7 - Institutional Assessment and Standard 14 - Assessment of Student Learning, and was also asked for more information about two other standards involving budgeting and resource allocation. The College submitted a monitoring report and was visited by a small team of reviewers from the

Commission in October 2013. The Commission team was satisfied with the information provided concerning budgeting. “We appreciate the diligence of the Commission’s team,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay, “and we will continue to document the College’s assessment processes, the advancement of student learning

and the effectiveness of our Comprehensive Assessment Plan for Institutional Effectiveness in order to meet the expectations of our accrediting body.” “Our College undertook a tremendous effort to implement a Comprehensive Assessment Plan for Institutional Effectiveness, including performing assessment activities in

every academic program and in the administrative and educational support units at the College,” said Dr. McKay. After reviewing all evidence and meeting with faculty, administration, and the College’s Board of Trustees, the Commission team found the College in full compliance with all 14 Middle States standards. The team made a recommendation to the

Commission to remove the College’s accreditation warning status at its June 2014 meeting and to reaffirm that Suffolk County Community College is and remains fully accredited. The Commission also informed the College that its next self-study and onsite evaluation is scheduled for 2017-2018.

Gomolin, Chief, Division of Geriatric Medicine, WinthropUniversity Hospital, in Mineola. New President pleased to welcome Jack P. Calareso, Ph.D. as its seventh president. Dr. Calareso has replaced SJC’s retiring President S. Elizabeth A. Hill, who served as its leader for 17 years. Dr. Calareso will be the first non-religious leader of the College since its founding in 1916. “My primary responsibility is to do everything I can to support St. Joseph’s College is each and every member
