eniors at Smithtown High School East celebrated the school’s 100th annual commencement exercise on the football field on June 24th. After the processional to Pomp and Circumstance, senior class President Danielle Laurenti led the salute to the American flag. The senior class concert choir then performed The Star-Spangled Banner. Friends of Karen, which provides vital, practical and comprehensive support – at no cost – to families caring for a child with cancer or another life-threatening illness, has a Gifts For Children program that includes back-to-school help. Over the summer, Friends of Karen collects donations of school supplies, backpacks and gift cards to make sure their families are able to get their children back to school in September with the right supplies. “Many of the families we help are trying to balance paying for their child’s medical bills, keeping up with regular household expenses and

It was a relief for the family of five, whose other sibling, Erin, was diagnosed with Leukemia at age seven. “The last thing on my priority list, unfortunately, was getting the kids off to school with their necessary items. What a relief when Friends of Karen stepped in with this beautiful gesture,” she said. “Not just for Erin, but my other children as well.”

On Monday, July 13th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center Inc. (ADRC) will host its 5th Annual Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Classic and Dinner at the Huntington Country Club, located at 483 West Main Street in Huntington. Those wishing to participate in the Golf Classic can register online at www.adrcinc. org/campaigns. Teams will consist of four individuals, with a payment of $500 per player. If you are registering as a single player, you will be matched up with a foursome. For those who will only attend the dinner, the price is $175. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. on the day of the event, followed by brunch at 10 a.m. At noon, there will be a barbeque lunch and shotgun start. The

with Jamie Lynn Ryan By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Expanding upon my adventuring-into-NYC theme from last week, clearly, I prefer to get around on foot. Sure, weather can be a factor, or time, but as long as it’s somewhat feasible, walking the city streets can be one of the more enjoyable aspects of exploring Manhattan. Assuming, that is, you have the proper footwear. Do I speak from personal experience? Why, of course I do. This past autumn, my friend and I – both former dancers – decided to buy tickets to the NYC Ballet. It would be our very first time seeing such a professional-scale performance; plus it was a great excuse to spend the day roaming the city. We (somewhat) mapped out our excursions, deciding we would walk from Penn Station all the way up to Lincoln Center, meandering off-route periodically. The day was unseasonably
warm for late September (like, approaching 90º warm), but we forged ahead with our plan to brave the elements. The main stop I wanted to make was to Central Park, in the vicinity of Strawberry Fields. For those unfamiliar, that’s a solid 35 blocks. Not a problem, at first. The issue, one that we had failed to appropriately navigate, was getting through the park without traveling, oh, about 27 miles out of the way. That was the moment when my decision to wear heels really kicked in as the wrong choice. Pavement was one thing; rolling hills and dirt paths quite another. Let’s just sum up the experience by stating that, after wandering aimlessly for hours, stopping to rest at literally every single park bench we passed, I was in dire need of a shoe substitute. With our show at Lincoln Center fast approaching, we desperately scanned the stores as we made our way south.
Finally, I spotted a Duane Reade. They sell flip-flops, don’t they? Well, yes, they do. However, unless you have size 11 feet, they won’t do you much good. Desperately, I searched the racks for something, anything else that would fulfill my purpose – which, at this point, was not being forced to walk barefoot down the city sidewalks. Just when I had given up hope, there they were – a pair of size 9 (I’m a size 7) ballet slipper flats. Sold. And so off we went to Lincoln Center, shoes in hand. Classy. I found myself reflecting upon this fond memory as I prepared for yet another city trip, to yet another ballet performance at Lincoln Center, with the same friend, over the Fourth of July weekend. Plans were mapped out accordingly, including a detour into Central Park. To be continued…
Academic Champs Suffolk County Community College’s Women’s Bowling Team has been honored by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) as one of the 2014-2015 NJCAA Academic Teams of the Year. Emily Clark of Port Jefferson Station; Emily Halbert of Islip; Jordan Kruger of East Islip; Brianna Meyer of Middle Island; Laura Molloy of St. James and Lena Sorrentino of East Islip were recognized for earning the highest gradepoint average – a 3.37 -- in their respective sport and gender during the 2014-15 academic year. Twelve awards were earned by men’s programs and 13 by women’s. Teams are required to compile at least a 3.0 grade-point average to be considered for the honor.

were entered from the United States and territories. Social Studies Teachers Ellen Robbins and Stacey Lasurdo and Librarian Brenda DePetris assisted Zhao with her research and website. Zhao had to compete at the local, regional and New York State level to qualify
for nationals. “Elise is the first student from Hauppauge to place in the top 10 on the national level,” stated Gordon. “This is an incredible accomplishment. The Social Studies Department and the entire Hauppauge School District are very proud of her efforts.”

Seniors at Smithtown High School East celebrated the school’s 100th annual commencement exercise on the football field on June 24th. After the processional to Pomp and Circumstance, senior class President Danielle Laurenti led the salute to the American flag. The senior class high concert choir then performed The StarSpangled Banner. Principal Edwin C. Thompson congratulated the seniors on all they’ve accomplished in their four years at Smithtown East,
and wished them best of luck in the future. “We are gathered here to celebrate your closing chapter in high school,” Thompson said. He quoted President Woodrow Wilson, who said the following words 100 years ago: “The only use of an obstacle is to be overcome. An obstacle is not used to frighten [people], but to challenge them.” Both Danielle Laurenti and honored speaker Brian Righter spoke to the graduating class about their experiences, and Laurenti even took a

selfie from the podium, which she said is the most cherished one she’s taken. “We have accomplished so much in just four years,” Laurenti said. “We have forged strong bonds and made memories that will last a lifetime.” “Together, we have overcome countless challenges,” Righter added. “But I ask that what you remember is your triumphs. Remember the camaraderie you shared and the culture we have created.”
Smithtown High School West held its annual commencement exercises on Robert Pratt Field on June 24th, with the Class of 2015 sharing the honor as the district’s 100th graduating class along with their High School East counterparts. HSW Principal John Coady thanked parents, Board of Education, central administration and HSW staff, in particular the guidance counselors, for all of the support they have provided the Class of 2015 throughout their four years at West. Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Grossane, who is completing his first full academic year at the helm of the Smithtown CSD, also thanked staff and parents. McCarthy was a standout performer for the soccer, winter track and lacrosse teams earning AllAmerican honors in her junior and senior seasons. She will attend Stony Brook University on a lacrosse scholarship in the fall. Bisono excelled
in volleyball, wrestling and lacrosse. He was the 170 pound Suffolk County Champion in wrestling and was named to the All-State Team after a third place finish at the New York State Wrestling Championships. He also was named one of the five finalists in Suffolk County for the Dellecave Award. Bisono will continue his wrestling career next year at Penn State University.
Class co-presidents Cameron Daleo and Ian Lesnick reminisced about their years in the district, from moving up to middle school to their final days at HSW. They took a moment to turn their backs to the audience to take a selfie with Rebecca and the Class of 2015, seated on the field. In keeping with tradition, select seniors from the HSW concert and jazz choirs presented a vocal tribute to their first teachers — their parents — as described by Principal Coady. Board of Education President Chris Alcure joined Dr. Grossane in presenting the Class of 2015 diplomas. Once the last diploma was awarded, Coady conferred the graduates, and the new HSW alumni turned their graduation tassels before hoisting their caps into the air in celebration. They then departed Pratt Field, embracing family and friends, many bidding farewell as they prepare to write the next chapter for their own stories of success.

The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. in conjunction with Newsday, nominated Hauppauge High School Seniors Keri McCarthy and Francisco Bisono for the 2015 Dellecave Award. This Award recognizes the top high school studentathletes, both male and female, in Suffolk County. In addition to the Dellecave Award winners, each Suffolk County High

There is no one goal in life that will guarantee you happiness if you reach it,” said Rebecca, who touted progress and resiliency as strong indicators of success. She advised that being a kind person and taking a step back and looking at life can get you farther than racing toward a fabricated finish line. “Everyone here has the ability to change something they touch,” said Rebecca. “The world won’t change overnight, but we all have the ability to change the world around us in small ways, on a daily basis.”

Pride & Patriotism Second-graders at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School celebrated their moving up to a new school next year with special “On Our Way to JFK” concerts. At the June 16th and 17th events, directed by music teacher Diane
Starost, the students dressed in patriotic red, white and blue and sang The Star-Spangled Banner; Hello Around the World, a greeting song in eight different languages; Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World; and the closing This Land Is Your
Land to the delight of staff and visiting parents. “We are so proud of the students for preparing and memorizing this program with such enthusiasm,” said Starost. “We wish them the best of luck as they move over to John F. Kennedy Elementary.”

Best Ensemble The cast and crew of Islip High School’s production of Catch Me If You Can were awarded the prestigious Best Ensemble award at the 2015 Islip Arts Council Teeny Awards, held June 7th at the Noel S. Ruiz Theater at the CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale. Islip High School was also among a small group of schools selected to perform as part of the awards ceremony, which was preceded by a redcarpet event with local politicians, performers and
celebrities. The Teeny Awards is a student arts recognition program sponsored by the Islip Arts Council. Its mission is to recognize and celebrate the talented students who participate in theater across the Town of Islip, encourage them to pursue their dreams, and to stimulate local interest while developing an understanding of the value of theater education in a well-rounded school curriculum. Islip was nominated in a total of six categories.
According to “Catch Me If You Can” director Rich Harris Jr., the Best Ensemble award is the most important of all. “A musical is about being transported to a different time and place,” he said. “That can’t happen unless the sets, music, costumes and performers are doing their job in the most convincing of ways. The Best Ensemble award recognizes that all the Islip students have done that, and done it well.”
Full of Joy At Islip High School’s commencement ceremony on June 25th, skies were cloudy but hearts were clear and full of joy as the 271 members of the Class of 2015 celebrated starting a new chapter in their lives. This was the first class to graduate at Islip’s new, state-of-the-art stadium, which began construction a year ago and was completed just in time for homecoming last October. Close to 1,800 seats were filled with proud families as the seniors walked out through the stadium gates, led by flag bearers, as the high school’s wind ensemble and concert band played “Pomp and Circumstance.” To begin the ceremony, the school’s Swing ensemble provided a sublime choral rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner, leading into a speech by salutatorian Kody Miller. “I am the author of my own tale now,” declared Miller, who touched on his longtime battle with social anxiety and how the senior trip to Spain this year renewed his confidence. “The past is written in pen, but who’s to say we can’t change our future?,” he asked. “As we head into the next chapter, remember it is you who are in control of your own life.” Continuing the literary theme, retiring Board President Mary M. Dennis told each senior to picture his or her life as a book,
with a page now being closed. “You are about to write the next chapter,” she said. “But don’t forget you have a chapter deeply rooted here in Islip.” In his first graduation ceremony as principal, Michael Mosca talked of his discovery of the Islip school community. “I have now learned what it means to be a Buccaneer,” he said, citing numerous positive traits found in this year’s seniors, a group that has persevered and overcome every obstacle. “Trust in everything you have learned so far, and most of all, trust in yourself,” he told his charges. Before leaving the podium, Mosca called up senior Alana Singh to take a selfie photo, to the delight of the audience. Valedictorian Ethan Fields began his speech with a well-deserved list of thanks, expressing gratitude to the teachers, administrators, counselors, Board of Education, and his friends and family. Referencing author David Foster Wallace, Fields challenged his classmates to change their life perspective to a less subjective, more rational and positive outlook that will help them better adapt to adversity. In closing, he told them, “My fellow seniors, I would like to thank you for an incredible four years here at Islip High School. I will never forget the time spent
here, and I know we will all go on to do amazing, incredible things.” Pumping up the energy level even higher, the high school’s senior choral ensemble were backed by a rock trio for an exultant rendition of Van Halen’s Right Now, preceding one final address, from Superintendent of Schools Susan A. Schnebel. “This is an excellent point to begin fashioning new goals for your future,” Schnebel told the seniors, whom she described as talented, dedicated, funloving and respectful. “Today is your moment,” she said. “Capture it, celebrate it – you’ve earned it.” Fighting back tears of emotion, Schnebel closed by saying, “Class of 2015, thank you for letting me be a part of your life for so many years. We are so proud of who you have become.” Diplomas were then handed out to each student, tassels were turned and caps were tossed. As the wind ensemble and concert band played Sousa’s “Fairest of the Fair,” the beaming graduates strode out of the stadium in a proud procession. “It took a really long time, but we finally did it,” said one of the newest Islip alumni, Steve Calderon, as he celebrated with his friends, all of who were now ready to turn the page and begin the next part of their life story.

John T. Mather Memorial Hospital is teaming up with the North Shore Art Guild, the Village of Port Jefferson and the Port Jefferson Conservancy to present “Artists United Against Breast Cancer”, a
juried art show at the Port Jefferson Village Center from August 30th, 2015 to Saturday, October 31st. The show will have as its theme “Victors of Survival, A Celebration of the Warrior Within Each of Us.” “Victors of Survival is not just about breast cancer. It’s about personal transformation, the person you become having faced the experience,” said Mac Titmus, Vice President of the Art Guild and coordinator of the show.
“It’s about the emergence of the warrior within you, and the struggle that brings it forth. It’s about you, the artist, and how you choose to transform that passion into expression.” Artists do not need to be a cancer survivor or family member of a survivor to participate.
