Michael plans to study Marine Science in college. Anthony Citera completed his project at the Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown. He built three planters for the Center’s Sensory Garden to enable the impaired to learn about each sense in a new environment. Luke Maciejewski renovated an outdoor reading area at the Burr Intermediate School by refurbishing the brick patio and building eight new benches. David Mastroianni designed and constructed a tool shed for the ELIJA

Farm, a non-profit CSA farm in Huntington Station. The addition of this shed will make it more convenient for the farmers to tend the gardens. Michael Van Loon built six planting beds to grow produce at Farmingdale University for LI Harvest, a non-profit food bank serving Long Islanders. This project doubled the size of the existing garden beds. Ryan Condell built a 12-foot long bridge spanning a creek on the LI Greenbelt Trail north of the Smithtown Landing Country Club. The bridge is structurally sound with railings, and has a half -inch gap between the boards to allow the water to run off and not freeze on the bridge.

Smithtown High School West, designed and installed a turtle-resting platform at Caleb Smith State Park in Smithtown. Nick sold first aid kits to raise the money for his Eagle Scout Project. Jack Haggerty, an 11th Grade Student at Smithtown High School West, redesigned the garden in front of the Suffolk County Legislature’s Building in Hauppauge. The new garden contains sustainable plants and enhances the appearance of the front of the building. Matthew Lang, a 12th Grade Student at Sequoya High School/Eastern Suffolk BOCES, built puppy-training cubes for the puppies at the Guide Dog Foundation in Smithtown. He built eight brand new ones and

refurbished the seven existing cubes. Brian O’Reilly, an 11th Grade student at Smithtown High School West, organized several bone drives for Gift of Life, a charitable organization that helps those battling blood cancers. He raised over $4000 at his car wash and signed up 128 donors. To date, his drive has successfully matched a donor for a 25-year-old man with leukemia. Michael Schroeder, a 12th Grade student at Hauppauge High School, constructed puppy training boxes and benches for the Guide Dog Foundation in Smithtown. The boxes will help train the puppies to become service dogs, and the benches will provide seating and storage in the training area.

and attorney E. David Woycik learned about the issues related to COVID-19, they extended their support to America’s VetDogs. Colonel E. David Woycik, Jr. (Ret.) United States Army was raised in Huntington and resides in Garden City. He is a senior trial partner concentrating on personal injury, construction, highway design and toxic torts at The Sanders Law Firm of Mineola. Woycik knows first-hand about the many difficulties faced by veterans and first responders who put the lives of others before their own. He has supported America’s VetDogs for many years following his service overseas in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait for Operation Desert Storm and recently for Operation

Enduring Freedom in the War Against Terrorism. Woycik is a well-decorated soldier and has been awarded the Legion Of Merit, Bronze Star and the Meritorious Service Ribbon. “These wonderful animals help our veterans and first responders reclaim their lives as best as possible before the person experienced a severe injury,” said Woycik. “They truly become the best friends of these men and women who have sacrificed themselves to serve others.” Late last year, a double figure donation was presented to America’s VetDogs in Woycik’s honor by Metzger, a personal friend and fellow Hofstra University alumnus. The raising lasts 14 -16 months and has included on-site training at Islanders facilities, games and community events. Metzger is wellknown across Long Island for his business services and his dedication to the sport of lacrosse along with extensive philanthropic support for athletic, education and other community programs. His contribution to America’s VetDogs allowed the organization to continue to provide the services (transportation to and from the campus, instruction and additional support) at no cost to the men and women who require trained canine companions. Coping With COVID During the pandemic, the organization adapted to safety protocol conditions by reducing the size of each service dog class but holding more classes to allow dogs to be placed with disabled veterans and first responders at close to the pre-COVID pace. Student trainers, observing all health and safety guidelines, spend more time at their homes with the dogs rather than

at the organization’s classrooms. Founded by the Guide Dog Foundation, an industry leader in guide and service dog training that is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, America’s VetDogs spends more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one assistance dog. The organization relies on contributions and volunteers from individuals such as Woycik and Metzger along with the support of corporations, service clubs and foundations. The professional sports community nationwide has extended its support. This includes the National Hockey League and specifically the New York Islanders. During fiscal year 2019, the Guide Dog Foundation and America’s VetDogs placed a record number of guide and service dogs with people who require assistance. Though facing similar issues associated with all nonprofits during the 2020-2021 pandemic— fewer donations and volunteers while

attempting to maintain a high level of services— America’s VetDogs still has been able to expand its national recognition and public awareness. With this has come an upsurge in demand for services. America’s VetDogs probably received its broadest national attention when it became the home for Sully, service dog to President George H.W. Bush. Today, Sully serves at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as a member of the facility dog program. Sully is just one of thousands of canines that have represented the organization and the Guide Dog Foundation since 1946. At that time, five community leaders founded a guide dog school in Queens that provided free trained guide dogs for blind or visually impaired people, including World War II veterans who had returned from the battlefields of Europe and the Pacific.

The best friends for men and women certainly are extra special to veterans, active-duty service members and first responders with disabilities. For people who have sustained physical injuries, posttraumatic stress disorder, hearing and vision loss, or seizures, highlyskilled service and guide dogs provide them with enhanced mobility and renewed independence. The mission of America’s VetDogs (371 East Jericho Turnpike, Smithtown) is to assist the men and women who honorably have served the country. Smithtown Re-Opens Senior Center for Residents The Town of Smithtown Senior Center is pleased to announce the full reopening of the Eugene Cannataro Senior Citizens Center. In person programming began last month, with the partial reopening focused on center clubs and activities. Rigorous cleaning and safety precautions were also implemented to ensure the health and wellbeing of the membership. The Senior Center began full scale operations, including meal services, on Monday, June 28th, 2021. “It is an honor to officially welcome back our residents to the Eugene Cannataro Senior Citizens Center. This could not be possible without Laura Greif, and the dedicated, compassionate team at the Senior Center... Registration is on the rise, with 22 new members signed up just this week. People are eager to safely socialize and gather again. I am truly grateful for this day and look forward to seeing many smiling faces enjoying all the center has to offer.” - Supervisor Ed Wehrheim Senior Center Program favorites including Zumba, quilting, gardening and strength training are all

featured on the monthly calendar. Clubs have also begun to conduct their bi-weekly meetings. The Senior Center staff is currently in the process of planning outings and trips for the membership to take advantage of. The pool room is currently open. In March of 2020, the Eugene Cannataro Senior Citizens Center was required, under New York State Executive Order, to close its doors to the public, at the start of the Coronavirus Pandemic. Supervisor Wehrheim worked closely with Senior Center Director Laura Greif and her team to arrange for weekly meal delivery for those residents who relied on the meal programs. Under Greif’s leadership, the Senior Center staff worked diligently to set up a number of services and programs to assist the most vulnerable of Smithtown’s population as each resident was forced to shelter in place. Harris Friedman and the Transportation Unit worked to drive senior residents to grocery stores, and doctor appointments/ wellbeing visits. Patty Bornhoft maintained the edible garden last summer, and delivered the weekly harvest of vegetables, fruit

and herbs to the Garden Club members. In addition to checking in on the membership, regularly, Victoria Rice made over 400 face masks for distribution. Home Repair crews focused on facilitating outdoor projects, and minor exterior home maintenance. Senior Center Director Laura Greif began daily ZOOM meetings to connect with the membership on a more personal basis. Then in January of 2021, a massive coordinated effort between the Supervisor’s Office, NY State, St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center and the Senior Center began in order to arrange vaccine appointments for Senior Citizens in the Community. In Spring, the Town of Smithtown conducted two vaccine sites; in Kings Park and at the Senior Center in Smithtown, successfully vaccinating close to 600 residents. Eugene Cannataro Senior Center Summer hours (through August 31) are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Town of Smithtown Live Music Series Kicks Off the Summer The Town of Smithtown Administration and the Recreation Department recently kicked off its annual Summer Concert Season at Long Beach and Hoyt Farm. On Friday nights, residents can enjoy live music at Long Beach in Nissequogue beginning at 7PM. On Sundays, residents can head over to Hoyt Farm in Commack for another fantastic evening of music starting at 7PM. The Summer concert series features a vast selection of musical genres from doo wop and classic rock, to billboard hits from some of the best tribute bands on the Island. “We’re so grateful and thrilled to present this year’s Summer concert series at Hoyt Farm and Long Beach. These concerts are so much more than just a fun night out. They are a celebration; representing all that is unique within our great

community and all we have to be thankful for. Blue Umbrella Experience (BUE) is a local nonproﬁt organization that offers a variety of interactive and engaging community classes for youth, young adults and individuals through their Above and Beyond Community Class initiative. Their goal is that students will enjoy learning while also connecting with others. The importance of community should never be overlooked, and Blue Umbrella Experience deﬁnitely understands that!

“We know we are our best selves when we have that safe space to feel accepted in, to help give us courage to try new things and practice using our voices to comfortably advocate for ourselves. We started our nonproﬁt Blue Umbrella Experience, Inc last June with the hope of thoughtfully and skillfully helping youth, young adults and individuals of all abilities to grow by learning, connecting and belonging during the pandemic and beyond,” says Executive Director Christine Hawkins. “We honestly could not bear the thought that individuals might otherwise face even more isolation, adversity and less options. We have been blessed with a team of instructors that have professional teaching experience in a Comprehensive

Since September, this nonprofit has had 100% retention and everyday their BUE community continues to expand, while keeping their interactive classes small and personalized for optimum learning. To nurture the incredibly important sense of belonging, they also make sure they incorporate free lunch meetings, a weekly wrap up community meeting, as well as social events to integrate learning and help students nurture their bonds with each other. Students and professionals are always welcome to visit their new location to see what its all about! Additionally, if you are looking to get involved with BUE, they welcome professionals that have teaching experience and a lot of heart to reach out and propose classes that they can run that will support skillbuilding and increase quality of life for others. Groundbreaking of St. Johnland Assisted Living Project Founded in 1866, St. Johnland Nursing Center continues today to fulfill its mission to create a caring and supportive environment committed to the highest standards of quality health care. St. Johnland is a 250-bed facility providing medical treatment for those with

Alzheimer’s/dementia, head injuries, rehabilitation, subacute care, as well as adult day care. It is now expanding its services to operate a new 100-bed assisted living project where individuals can maintain their sense of independence while receiving essential services and amenities.

The anticipated opening is the fall of 2022. Legislator Trotta who grew up in the area and lives near St. Johnland said, “I drive past this center all the time and appreciate that St. Johnland is doing this project as it will benefit our residents and the community.”
