Sunshine of My Life We can all use a little sunshine in our lives. No matter how happy we may be, there is always room for more. It is a life source, a beacon of positivity, light, warmth – all features whose benefits have the ability to make daily life that much more fulfilling. Sure, not everyone is a “summer” person. But I don’t know of too many who fail to embrace the positive qualities a little daylight provides. Come winter, spring, summer or autumn, the sun shines on, allowing all those who wish to bask in its glow. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good thunderstorm just as much as the next person. There is something about inclement weather which
affords the easy excuse to be just a bit more unproductive than when the sun is shining brightly. One doesn’t feel so guilty sleeping a little later, pushing aside some of those errands, saving that running around for another day. To everything, and everyone, there is a season. Luckily for us, we have four distinct ones to enjoy – or count the days down until they pass – whichever method you prefer. For me, I say it is always better to appreciate that time rather than wish it away. Six months ago, we were checking off the days until summer vacation and beach weather and all the rest that comes with extended hours of sunshine was to arrive. And six months from now, we shall
be doing the same. Such is the circle of life. Personally, I make it my mission to witness as many sunsets as possible and – though it pains me to “rise and shine” quite that early – even my fair share of sunrises. There is something quite magical about the dawning of a new day; same with the golden glow which overtakes the landscape as the sun prepares to dip below the horizon. So go outside, take a walk, absorb your surroundings. Take it all in. Allow the warmth of the sun to touch your soul. It’s the most natural form of healing we have, and it’s there for the taking. Embrace it.

The seminar brought together government agencies, nonprofit organizations, advocates, veterans and their families to exchange information about how to access and manage available services, benefits and assistance. Presentations addressed a broad range of topics, including housing, health, financial services, education, employment, business development, estate planning, selfhelp and legal services. Even as they wound down to the final days of school, students at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park turned their attention to thinking of planet earth. SSCM Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Lisa Shirreffs shared a fun and earthfriendly recycling activity with her students during the last week of school. Collecting thousands of used crayons, the students got involved in a community service
through the “Crazy Crayons Project,” which has made it possible to stop 105,000 pounds of unwanted crayons from going into landfills with the help from schools, organization educators and kids across this country. This national crayon recycling program is simple and brilliant. Students collect unwanted crayons, used, broken, unpopular colors. They then have a fun time sorting, counting and boxing them up and
shipping them to Crazy Crayons, where they are melted down and made into new crayons. These new crayons are sent to hospitals, orphanages and inner city schools. The students found this to be a great interactive learning experience and it was a perfect way for our youngest students to have a way to give back to others.

Annual Meeting On Thursday, June 16th, members of the Huntington Historical Society gathered at the Huntington Elks Club for the 112th annual Meeting of the organization. Attendees enjoyed a buffet dinner, and presentations were made on the Society’s 2015 activities, milestones and future goals. President Robert “Toby” Kissam welcomed the newest Trustees, Chris Voulgaris, Donna Waldenburg, and Anthony Vlachos to the Board of Directors, and Elizabeth Borst who began her second term as a Trustee. Chris Voulgaris is a lifelong Huntington resident and CPA for Certified Federal Contracts Manager, Chris also serves as the treasurer of Old Huntington Green. Donna Waldenburg has lived in Huntington for the
past 34 years volunteering her time with the local PTA, educational groups, and the Boy Scouts of America, she currently is the Executive Director of Long Island for Arts and Sciences. Anthony Vlachos is the Vice President & Cofounder of The WizdomOne Group, he is active in the Huntington Chamber of Commerce and Co-Chair of the Health & Wellness Committee to push for healthier lifestyles. Smithtown Celebrates Smithtown Central School District celebrated the accomplishments of Smithtown High School East’s Class of 2016 during its 101st annual commencement exercise on June 22nd. The close to 400 graduates marched proudly onto the football field to “Pomp and Circumstance” and were welcomed by Smithtown School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Grossane, who urged the students to find balance as they move to the next phase of their lives. “Remember to dedicate yourself to your passions
and beliefs,” Grossane said. “Our job as educators is complete but you will need to rely on your roots here as you spread your wings and be the best person you can be.” Student honor speaker Benjamin Dolowich, who is selected by the class instead of a valedictorian or salutatorian, reminded his peers that although the high school journey may be complete, the individual evolution has just begun. “Learn how to lead so our lessons will be something that is taught to the next generation,” he said. Senior class president
Julia Esposito offered a brief look back on the years spent in the Smithtown Central School District and reflected on the possibilities that lie ahead. “Let’s make this new chapter the best one yet,” she said. “Be true to yourself, work hard, dedicate yourself and your dreams will come true.” The ceremony also marked the last in a decadelong tenure for Smithtown High School East Principal Edwin Thompson, who announced his retirement earlier this year.
Celebrating the End The 427 members of the Smithtown High School West Class of 2016 celebrated the end of their high school careers during the 101st commencement exercise on the football field on June 22nd. After the jazz choir performed “The StarSpangled Banner,” Smithtown Central School District Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Administration Jennifer Bradshaw welcomed students and guests to the ceremony. “There are few times in life that
hundreds of people come together to celebrate your accomplishments the way they have today,” she said. “The joy and pride out on this field are the results of years of hard work. This audience is filled with throngs of supporting families, friends and school personnel.” Honor speaker Alexander Lusak, who was selected by his peers in lieu of a valedictorian and salutatorian, offered insight on how to thrive in the upcoming years. “We will be exposed to a ton of new ideas, new
cultures, new viewpoints and new connections,” he said. “If we work as hard as we did during the past four years going forward, I have no doubt that we will all be featured for doing something amazing – we will impact this world.” Smithtown High School West Principal John Coady presented the Class of 2016 before calling each student to the stage for the presentation of diplomas. As a tribute to parents and graduates, the senior concert choir and jazz choir performed “The Sweetest Day.”

Student-artists Smithtown High School East senior Rosalie Zack and Smithtown High School West senior Anya Beck were recently named recipients of the Thomas Curran Award and Scholarship Fund. As winners, the pair recently visited Hauppauge-based
creative services firm Curran & Connors to learn about the latest trends in design. Nominated by their respective art teachers, Tim Needles from Smithtown High School East and Steve Halem from Smithtown High School West, the two student-
artists were presented with the scholarship for their artistic excellence throughout their high school careers. The $500 scholarship can be used as they move onto college in the fall and seek careers in graphic arts.
Mitchell Stern’s scouting service started in September of 2004 as a Tiger Club and included leadership positions as he advanced to the rank of Eagle Scout. United Cerebral Palsy Association of Long Island will host its 2016 Scramble on Monday, August 1st, at Nissequogue Golf Club. This year’s presenting sponsor will be Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Gerard, who has been a Board member since 2011, is currently the Vice
