Of Summer Memories and Staycations Summer is upon us, officially, and for some that means making a getaway to tropical islands, upstate resorts or seaside chalets; essentially, anywhere but here. For me, I look at this season of warmth and sunshine as a perfect opportunity to enjoy all that Long Island has to offer. Home sweet home, indeed. Our little neck of the woods certainly has no shortage of pristine beaches, whether you prefer the smooth sand and surf of the south shore, or the seashell-encrusted terrain of the north shore. From the North Fork wineries, to the South Fork shopping hamlets, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy. Personally, I have always been a big fan of the “staycation.” Throw in a day trip to Manhattan or any of the boroughs, and you can literally travel from coast to coast over a four-day weekend and never run out of sights to see. No matter how many times I’ve visited the Fire
Island Lighthouse, the Montauk Lighthouse or any number of tourist attractions in New York City, I always find a new angle to appreciate, a slightly different perspective to photograph. Of course, with a holiday such as the 4th of July, it’s always nice to view a few fireworks. With rare exception, this has generally meant sitting out on the deck in hopes that the neighbors had managed to obtain some sparkly explosives, or, if it wasn’t too crowded, taking a ride down to the local town beach to view the show from across the Bay. One year, a friend and I were inspired to check out the annual show at Eisenhower Park. After realizing that we should have probably allowed more time, resorting to parking on the side of Hempstead Turnpike and then wandering aimlessly around the park after having somehow missed the main entrance - we arrived. Or so we thought. We had literally walked into what was the staging setup for

the fireworks show. Talk about a front row seat. After hurriedly realizing this was not, in fact, the viewing area, we wound up walking/running what seemed like miles, following the distant sounds of explosions, until we came upon the rest of the crowd, who had most likely gotten there hours before. As we set up our blanket and settled down to watch what remained of the show, there was one final burst of color in the sky. And then… silence. The end. And that, ladies and gentlemen, was the first and last “real” fireworks show I have ever attended. A priceless memory nonetheless, one that is fondly reflected upon whenever the holiday nears. Here’s hoping everyone has a safe summer and enjoys whatever adventures it may bring. Just remember, you need not travel far to see beautiful sights… and make beautiful - if not brief - memories.

Graduates Celebrate consider your next journey and how you want to spend that journey.” Smithtown High School East Principal Dr. Kevin Simmons urged the graduates to dream big. “This is an unbelievably exciting time in your life,” he said. “All doors are open as you decide what your next chapter in life will be. Keep making informed choices and educated decisions. Continue to test yourself and stay committed to your beliefs because you know what’s best for you. We are so proud of your current accomplishments and we look forward to hearing all of your future successes as well.” Student honor speaker Kyle DiPietrantonio, who is selected by the class instead of a valedictorian or salutatorian, took a moment to reflect on how far the class has come in the past four years at Smithtown High School East. “These past
four years, we have been working to create our own identity,” he said. “You have the power to make a difference. You have the ability to impact and influence. Leave your legacy.” Senior class president Juneve Porciello addressed her fellow classmates and spoke about how graduation wasn’t the end but a new beginning. “Today, we are not saying goodbye, we are saying hello to our future,” she said. “The days in front of us are what hold the greatest adventure. It’s time to take the next step in our journey.” The 400-plus members of the Class of 2017 were then called to the stage one by one to receive their diplomas and pose for a picture before tossing their caps high into the air to celebrate the end of their time at Smithtown High School East.
The first eleven points of the Boy Scout Law must be demonstrated in order to go from one rank to the next, including Eagle. The 12th point - “Scout is Reverent” - can be demonstrated in a variety of ways including the earning of the religious award of the Scout’s individual faith. As with all the religious emblems, these are not an award for Scouting skills, but rather an emblem authorized by the Boy Scouts of America to be worn on the Scout’s uniform after satisfactory completion of the necessary requirements. In observance of the 12th point of the Scout Law, Life Scout Dylan Feldman and Eagle Scout/Junior Assistant Scoutmaster Brian Trifon of Troop 403 (Commack) were presented with their Talmud Torah Emblems on June 18th at Boy Scout Troop 403 (Commack)’s Troop Court of Honor, held at their weekly meeting place at the Christ Lutheran Church (Burr Road and Larkfield Ave, East Northport). Presented by North East Region JCOS Committee Chairman Bruce Streger and Jewish Committee member Alan Morris (also Scoutmaster of Troop 403), Scouts Feldman and Trifon were presented with
a medal and a certificate for having earned all four of the religious emblems while being a registered Scout. The scouts are the 5th and 6th recipients of the Tamid Torah Emblem nationwide (and the 3rd ,and 4th in Suffolk County Council BSA) since it was first presented in 2012. Eagle Scout Brian Trifon, who has earned two Eagle Palms during his tenure with Boy Scout Troop 403 and also serves as a Junior Assistant Scoutmaster, is the son of Assistant Scoutmaster Marty and Committee Chair Debbie Trifon, and older brother to Girl Scout Amanda Trifon of Troop 889 (Melville). Life Scout Dylan Feldman is the son of Assistant Scoutmaster Steven and Stacey Feldman and older brother of Girl Scout Madison Feldman of Troop 872 (Commack).

Smithtown Central School District celebrated the accomplishments of Smithtown High School East’s Class of 2017 during its 102st annual commencement exercise on June 22nd. The 427 graduates marched proudly onto the football field to “Pomp and Circumstance” and were welcomed by Smithtown School District Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Jennifer Bradshaw, who spoke to the Class of 2017 about smart goals and dream-driven goals. “You don’t have to pick one or the other for your goals,” she said. “Today, your graduation day, is a noteworthy accomplishment. But it is only one day that represents the culmination of 13 years of studying. You should be proud of the work that got you here. But as you embark on the next stage of life, consider not just your next goal,

At a recent Scholarship Awards Ceremony held at Teachers Federal Credit Union headquarters in Hauppauge, Robert G. Taking First Place Commack Middle School eighth grader Chapin Zerner took First Place Highest Honors in the New York State Science Congress for his project, “Is there a correlation between coronal mass ejections originating from the sun’s surface and the solar sunspot cyclic waxing and waning?” Chapin’s project focused on one of closest neighbors, our Sun. Although it is
93 million miles away, activity on our nearest star can have consequences here on Earth. The Sun’s temperature varies on an 11-year cycle, cycling from a quieter period to a more turbulent solar maximum. Sunspots sometimes erupt into very powerful solar storms which can interact with Earth’s magnetic field and cause problems such as power grid disruptions or even putting satellites
in orbit out of service. Chapin’s project is of profound importance because the more we are able to predict these violent solar outbursts, the better prepared we can be to deal with any potential issues that may result. Chapin received a $400 check, and plans on continuing his science research into this topic and many others when he attends Commack High School in the fall.

Celebrating 50 Years
The Fort Salonga Elementary School was built in 1967, and recently marked its 50th anniversary. The occasion was celebrated with students reading their essays about the school and the third grade chorus singing several songs to entertain the guests. The school’s mission is
to inspire life-long student curiosity, creativity and independence. It provides instruction from kindergarten through the third grade. Legislator Rob Trotta thanked the school administration for inviting him and suggested that the children in kindergarten remember this day and
think about returning to the school in 50 years when it will celebrate its 100th anniversary. He then led the students in singing “Happy Birthday.” “This is one of the best schools on Long Island and my children also went here,” said Legislator Trotta.
Boy Scout Troop 52 of East Northport held an Eagle Court of Honor for four of its scouts who attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Each one of the scout projects helped the community, as well as taught the scouts the skills of being a leader. With the assistance of their fellow scouts, they conducted fundraisers to purchase the supplies necessary for their projects. For his community project, Ryan Bornkamp built two paddle storage bins for Camp Alvernia in Centerport. Ryan donated the remainder of the funds from the project to the Camp to be used to be
used to reduce the cost of attending the camp by children in need of financial assistance. Brothers Peter and Joseph Recchia completed their own individual Eagle Scout projects. Peter constructed and installed free stand sing for the Northport Nursery School and landscaped the area around the new sign. Joseph purchased a flagpole and spotlight and installed them at the Visiting Nurse Service & Hospice of Suffolk in East Northport. Shawn Weigand renovated The Dr. Burns’ Reading Garden at the Fifth Avenue Elementary
School in East Northport. He also painted eight poles in front of the school to look like pencils. Shawn donated the remaining funds to the school to purchase new books for the school library. At the ceremony, Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta said, “Congratulations on achieving the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. This is a great accomplishment because you have done this before the age of 18. You will have this award for the rest of your lives and this achievement will be noted in your future whether it is on your college or job applications.”

Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta attended the Eagle Court of Honor for Boy Scout Troop 301 of St. James at the St. James Lutheran Church, which hosts the troop. The scouts earned their required merit badges, demonstrated that they have learned to be leaders and completed the tasks necessary to become an Eagle Scout. For his community service project, Erik Stickevers did some work at the Animal Shelter in Smithtown. He built an arbor to mark the entrance to the dog path and created a safety barrier between the exercise yards for the dogs at the shelter. Eric’s work will enhance the dog walking trail at the site. Peter Panagiotopoulos decided to do his project to benefit the St. James Lutheran Church as a thank you for hosting
the Troop’s meetings. He removed everything from the basement and then installed a waterproof floor in the recreation area and the office at the Church. He also built a plywood platform to fix an uneven area of the floor. In addition, he added plywood underneath the riser to the staircase to make it look more attractive. Michael Panagiotopoulos did his community service project for the American Legion Hall in St. James. He renovated the storage area by waterproofing the walls and installed cabinets and a counter top to provide a better working environment for the veterans. His project was done as a thank you to the veterans for all they have done and continue to do for our country. For his Eagle Scout project, Joseph Madonia built six tables for the
Guide Dog Foundation to be used for training and exercising the guide dogs. Prior to Joseph taking on this task, the Foundation had only one table which they could use for this purpose. At the ceremony, Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta said, “Thank you for inviting me as I find attending the Eagle Court of Honor to be an enjoyable part of my job and it makes me proud to know how many Eagle Scouts I have in my legislative district. I am very impressed by how many past Eagle Scouts also attend these ceremonies. Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is a great accomplishment and one that will be with you for the rest of your lives. You should all be an inspiration to your younger scouts and the other teenagers of this great county,” said Legislator Rob Trotta.
Dellecave Winners Hauppauge High School senior Katie Murphy and West Islip High School senior Patrick Carter were recently honored with the Butch Dellcave Award at a ceremony held on June 11th at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook. Named in memory of the legendary educator, official, and coach Gaetano “Butch” Dellecave, the award is the product of a highly successful 17-year partnership between local school districts in Suffolk County and the award organizers: the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, the Butch Dellecave Foundation, and Newsday. Athletic Directors from all sixty-six Suffolk County school districts are asked to nominate one
male and one female from their high school senior class. Nominees must be students who are not only at the top of their game, but also score high in classroom performance and in their commitment to local community service. Murphy, a former News 12 Scholar-Athlete, was a starting player on the varsity basketball team for all four years at Hauppauge High School. As a junior, she was the team’s Most Valuable Player, the leader in points, assists, steals, as well as an All County selection. Murphy is only the 5th player in Hauppauge history to score 1,000 career points in basketball. Murphy also excels in Cross-Country – she was a two-time All
County as well as an All State in that sport. She had a 96.7 GPA and will be attending Adelphi University in the Fall. Carter was a six-year varsity swim team member where he served as team captain. He is a three-time All State, a five-time All Long Island, a five-time All County, and a fivetime State Meet Qualifier. Remarkably, Carter has been undefeated in dual meet competitions since the start of 8th grade. He is a five-time state scholarathlete with a 96.7 GPA, a member of the National Honor Society, the World Language Honor Society, and the National Society of High School Scholars. Carter will be attending the U.S. Naval Academy in the Fall.

Blood Drive a Success This past Monday, Legislator Leslie Kennedy along with Kevin LaValle and Mayor Robert Scottaline, hosted a blood drive at the Lake Grove Recreation Center in Lake Grove. Legislator Kennedy again enlisted the New York Blood Center to provide their phenomenal collection services. Every day, the New York Blood Center collects up to 2,000 units of blood for hospitals in New York, Pennsylvania,
and New Jersey. All donors will receive a free pair of Mets tickets. The Mets have been a long-time supporter of the New York Blood Center. The partnership continues to be a success. This blood drive alone saw thirty-seven residents present to donate blood. After collecting four hundred and twenty-seven pints last year, Leslie hopes to top that number as her 2017 Blood Drive Series continues. The New York
Blood Center is grateful for Legislator Kennedy’s efforts, and Legislator Kennedy was happy to help. “It’s always important to donate blood, and I am happy to see that so many in the community are willing to put the needs of others ahead of their own. It was an afternoon of pride and sentiment as 427 graduates from Smithtown High School West’s Class of 2017 celebrated an important academic milestone during the 102nd annual commencement exercises on the football field on June 22nd. After a salute to the flag, the jazz choir sang the national anthem, followed by Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Grossane’s welcome to the students and their guests. In giving advice to the graduates, Dr. Grossane called on the lessons learned in the readings of “Winnie the Pooh” stories as they
related to individuality, unselfishness, comfort, wealth and trust. “Trust in your abilities to deal with anything,” he said. Honor speaker Cory Zhou, who was elected by his peers in lieu of a valedictorian and salutatorian, encouraged classmates to find passion in their lives and to use their natural talents. “Do not subjugate your gifts out of fear,” he said. “Instead, flaunt them and be proud of them.” Class president Courtney Grafstein spoke about the importance of reaching out to others. “Everything we do, no matter how small, can make a difference in the lives of others,” she

Buddy Program The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), Long Island’s premier provider of substance abuse services and prevention programs is pleased to announce that Mr. Nelson Monica, a mentor in the LICADD BUDDY (Building Unique, Dynamic & Diverse Youth) has received Mentor of the Year from Mentor New York. Mentor New York, an affiliate of the National
Mentoring Partnership, fuels quality mentoring relationships that match a caring adult with children in need through safe, effective mentoring programs throughout New York State. A special dinner, Mentoring Night Out, was held on June 22nd at the Bowery Hotel in New York City. Both Mr. Monica and his mentee, Miguel G. were in attendance. Celebrating with them were BUDDY
Program Coordinator, Lauren Laurore, LCSW and LICADD Board Chairman Michael Brennan and his wife, Donna. The BUDDY program matches children who have an incarcerated parent (or close relative) with an adult trained volunteer. The mentor meets with their mentee on a regular basis to provide guidance and support with the goal of building a trusting relationship. The BUDDY
program has been in existed for seven years and is supported by fundraising efforts and grant foundations, Bank of America and The Richard and Mary Morrison Foundation. For 61 years, LICADD is Long Island’s premier nonprofit agency providing life-saving alcohol and drug prevention and intervention services to at-risk children, individuals, and families
across the region. With offices in Westbury and Holbrook, LICADD conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. The agency also conducts evidence-based prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, a BUDDY mentoring program for children of incarcerated
parents, and public policy advocacy at the national, state and local level. The United States Polo Association (USPA) has announced that the U.S. Open Arena Polo Championship will take place July 11th–22nd at the Country Farms Polo Club in Medford, New York. The 12-20-goal tournament serves as one of the highest levels of arena polo competition currently played in the United States. The tournament has a rich history dating back to 1926. In its inaugural year, it was won by the Yale University team made up of Reddington Barret, Winston Guest and William Muir. However, their champion status was quickly overtaken by Brooklyn Riding & Driving Club the following three years (1927-1929). Over the past 35 years, the tournament has been played alternately on the East Coast and West Coast at venues such as Shallowbrook Polo Club (New York), the Los Angeles Equestrian Center (California), Empire Polo Club (California), Great Meadow Polo Club
(Virginia), West Hills Polo Club (New York), California Polo Club (California), and most recently for the last five years, Country Farms Polo Club. In contemporary U.S. Open Arena polo competition, Cedar Croft Farms has garnered the prestigious title from 2013-2015, a significant feat, as only the second team in the history of the tournament to achieve three consecutive wins with the same team members. The young team consisted of Kris Kampsen, Team USPA member* Felipe Viana and Robert Ceparano. Last year NYC Polo including arena veteran Matias Magrini, Team USPA member Jared Sheldon* and Samuel Ramirez Jr. narrowly defeated Cedar Croft Farms in the final 17-15. “The USPA looks forward to this year’s tournament and hosting several teams that will represent the sport of polo to a wide audience on the USPA Polo Network,” said Duncan Huyler, USPA CEO. “We thank Country Farms for
their hospitality and efforts to host this historical tournament.” Polo fans are encouraged to attend this year’s games and cheer for their favorite team. Seven or more matches will take place regularly during the 11 days of the tournament. Tickets to the finals on July 22 are $5 in advance and $10 at the door and can be purchased at www.country-farms. com. All other games are free and open to the public.
