The Heart of the Matter “I became a journalist to come as close as possible to the heart of the world.” ~ Henry Luce As I sit here at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon composing my thoughts for this column, one can’t help but reflect upon the latest in a long line of tragic shootings to touch the nation, this time at the headquarters of the Capital Gazette, an Annapolis newspaper founded in 1727. Among the five fatalities were veteran editors, writers and reporters, as well as a sales assistant to the staff. To think that a random act of violence on an otherwise average day could at once shatter so many lives is quite jarring. Of course, we as a society have become all too accustomed to dealing with tragedies of this sort; places that were once deemed to be “safe” can no longer be guaranteed so. Schools, churches, movie theaters . . . the list goes on and on. Year after year, these senseless acts have invaded our

societal comfort zone, making it increasingly difficult to look the other way. There is simply no rhyme or reason to the madness and where it may strike next. Of course, being of the journalism profession and working in an office much like the one brought to its knees last Thursday, this particular incident resonates on a slightly deeper level. The sentiment expressed by one Gazette reporter in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, “I can tell you this: we are putting out a damned newspaper tomorrow,” is one that rings true for nearly every publication through history that has been faced with a measure of adversity. From storms and natural disasters to power outages, union strikes and the like, journalism is one of the few industries that seldom “stops the presses” for any reason. Just a few years ago, many local community newspapers were faced with the prospect of not publishing in the

wake of Hurricane Sandy, as the majority of Long Island remained without power in the days and weeks following. But ultimately, the need to forge ahead, to provide readers with a lifeline to their surroundings, prevailed. As promised, the Capital Gazette came out with its Friday edition, the headline “5 Shot Dead at the Capital” splashed across the front cover. Simple. And yet so far from simple. Within the paper were written articles covering the attack and photos of the victims. But perhaps most poignant was the page normally reserved for opinions and editorials, which was left blank. In the white space were the words: Today, we are speechless. This page is intentionally left blank to commemorate the victims of Thursday’s shooting at our ofﬁce. What followed were the names of the five employees who were killed, one to a line. At the end of the day, there is really not much more to say.

As a non-profit that operates 100% by volunteers, Coastal Steward Long Island feels they can never have enough people to volunteer. They take volunteers to help with beach cleanups, planting oysters, collecting relevant data, maintaining tanks, releasing into the harbor and office work.

Through working with businesses, community groups, schools and local government, they bring volunteers out for a day on the beach, where they gain

In recognition for leading the healthcare industry in sustainability and environmental stewardship, Stony Brook University Hospital received the Greenhealth Emerald Award from Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care. The award is one of the Environmental Excellence Awards given each year to honor environmental achievements in the healthcare sector. The Greenhealth Emerald Award recognizes healthcare facilities that are setting the standard in eliminating mercury, reducing and recycling waste, sustainable sourcing, and other areas. Raphael Iskra was named a Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship annual competition, and went on to win $2,500 scholarship. Approximately 1.6 million students entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program, and Raphael is one of only 2,500 students chosen for this honor. “Selection Committee members review all of the Finalist applications and consider each student’s academic record (including course

load, rigor, depth and breadth of subjects studied, and grades earned); the student’s selfdescriptive essay, activities, leadership, employment, and contributions to the school and community; in addition to the high school official’s letter of recommendation. The Scholars selected by the Committee are those determined to have the strongest combination of attributes and accomplishments and

the greatest potential for future success in college studies and beyond.” Raphael earned many accolades during his high school years, in science and math. Most recently he was a two time participant (two years in a row) in the Intel Science and Engineering Fair, taking third place in Microbiology, and a member of the top Varsity Math Team in Suffolk County. He will attend the University of Pennsylvania this fall.

On July 1, 1776 the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia. On July 2, 12 of the 13 colonies voted in favor of Richard Henry Lee’s motion for independence. The delegates spent the next two days debating and revising the language of a statement drafted by Thomas Jefferson. On July 4, Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence, and as a result this date is celebrated as Independence Day. Only 2 people actually signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776: John Hancock and Charles Thomson, Secretary of Congress. Most others signed on August 2, and several signed on a later date.

One of the many solid principles of Zen is that, when you read or see several pages of text, you then contemplate the highlights in your mind before going on to the next section. We will do this now, shifting the scene a bit from the written word to a visual experience. Here we go... There is a local radio station that, when approaching the lunchtime hour (around 12 noon) will describe a picture of a tranquil scene - usually a fountain, a view of the park with people enjoying themselves, and so on. They will tell us that we are experiencing a “lunchtime Zen.” Now, I have never see any type of poll where the average person knows exactly what a “lunchtime Zen” really is. I guess the station feels that, if it makes people feel happy, that’s enough - and probably so. However, moving forward, let’s unravel this puzzle together. To clarify, the mere sight of a beautiful scene does not automatically trigger a Zen response. This is when your body, mind and the environment blend together in unison. Over time, and with repeated practice, one finds a deeper sense of fulfillment, coupled with a greater sense of yourself - bringing deeper peace and

tranquility to your mind and body. There is no one way to approach this scene, nor to obtain the many benefits available to you. After doing a lot of thinking about the best way to accomplish this, I decided to explain how I would go about it - step by step. What you are about to read is the result of my own many years of study and experience in the art of Zen. As such, one should not expect the same results by merely trying the same method. However, it will at least give you the basics of how this method can achieve success. A while ago, my wife and I decided to take a weekend in Key West, just as a change of pace and to relax. At that time, I was working in Miami, so it meant only a relaxing drive from that city due south down toward the Keys. Since it was approaching late afternoon, once at the hotel, we were anxious to take the short walk to the pier, buy a drink and take in a view of the setting sun. If you have never been to the Keys, you are probably unaware that, as the sun sets (a bright golden-red), it appears to cover the entire horizon in a blaze of color! As I knew that this was to become a Zen experience, I prepared myself for it.

As the sun began to set, I took several deep breaths and did a brief meditation. I then opened my eyes and found myself completely immersed in the moment. Having my wife with me and feeling a great peace within myself only added to the joy of the moment as the sun sank lower on the horizon. It was an amazing sight - most people sat in awe, and a few even clapped! To complete the moment and finish the experience, we found a small café on the water where one could have dinner and watch the fishing boats return to the harbor. This experience was heightened by taking in the sights and sounds of the harbor itself – the slight breeze coming off the water, the occasional sounds of the ships unloading their catch of the day and the screeching of seagulls who follow the ships in every night to pick up the fish scraps and enjoy their impromptu dinner. To help you further understand the Zen process, here are some broad guidelines to follow. • As the fishing boats follow the lighthouse markers that guide them to the harbor, so does a short meditation prior to Zen. • Always keep in mind that the art of

Zen takes many months (even years) to master. Do not be discouraged or impatient as you learn. You will find that completion of even the smallest of steps will give you pleasure. • It may be beneficial for you to partner up with a close friend who can mutually experience the value as you follow the real world of Zen. Success and failure are usually minimized when you have someone to share them with. KEY POINT Here is a true Zen story which will further illustrate a key point of discovery at the heart of Zen. I was travelling throughout the deep south on a business trip. At mid-morning, I stopped at a small donut shop for a quick break. When I walked in, I was struck by their wall display. It was a very large donut hung on the wall, but what quickly caught my eye were the words underneath. It said: As you go through life brother, whatever your goal, keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole. It took only a few moments to realize that those words represented a true Zen philosophy! Smart Suffolk Recently, County Executive Steve Bellone joined the Wyandanch School District and 330 students in Pre-K and Kindergarten to launch the My Summer Books Reading Initiative, which provides every participating student a scholastic “My Summer Books Back Pack," inclusive of books that reflect the diversity, interests, and reading levels of each student. The educational partnership between the County and School District also offers bi-lingual books available for students to keep them engaged with reading and writing activities during the summer months. “We must always be on a learning journey and today’s announcement will provide the opportunity for the most early learners within the Wyandanch School District to engage

in summer reading and learning activities with their families and community,” said County Executive Bellone. “This initiative will turn the summer academic slide into the summer leap and allow the community to assist in that process.” The Wyandanch School District will further collaborate with the Wyandanch Mother’s for Change, the Wyandanch Plaza Association, and Allied Foundation to host Summer Reading on the Plaza every Saturday in July and August at the Delano Stewart Plaza at Wyandanch Village. This will provide students an opportunity to come together, read their books, participate in learning activities, receive nutritious lunch provided by Island Harvest and Stop and Shop, and have

the opportunity to receive additional free books from Book Fairies. Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. announced recently that he has chosen Kevin T. Catalina as Suffolk County’s new Undersheriff. Catalina, who is presently the Deputy Chief and Commanding Officer of the New York City Police Department’s (NYPD) Intelligence Bureau, Operational and Analytical Section, will assume the position at the Sheriff’s Office on August 1st. Among his responsibilities will be the Sheriff’s Office’s Gang Intelligence Unit, and oversight of the Deputy Sheriffs and Training Academy. Sheriff Toulon performed an extensive search for his new Undersheriff, and chose Kevin Catalina based on his highly successful career at the NYPD and for his expertise in anti-gang violence strategies, gang suppression and counterterrorism operations.

Prior to joining the Sheriff’s Office in 2016, Kuehhas worked at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office where he was responsible for overseeing all criminal prosecutions in Suffolk’s five East End towns. He is a well-known lecturer on policing and legal issues and an Adjunct Professor in Criminal Justice at Suffolk Community College. In 2015, he was awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching.

Sun Shines for Smithtown Smithtown Central School District’s two high schools – East and West – held their respective 103rd commencement exercises on the football field on June 21st joined by members of the board of education, administration, family, friends, faculty and invited guests, officially completing the seniors’ educational journey. Smithtown High School East Principal Dr. Kevin Simmons commended the 406 members of the Class of 2018 for the positive mark they have left on the school. He reminded them to stay true to themselves and take advantage of the opportunities they will be presented with in the future. “The future is in your capable hands, and we know our future is bright,” Dr. Simmons told the graduates. with hopes, dreams and sage advice that assured the graduates they were prepared to begin the next stage of their lives. Sharing wisdom she learned reading Adam Grant’s book “Give and Take,” Bradshaw told the graduates that Grant’s research finds that those who give come out ahead in both business and in life. “Givers build larger, broader, more supportive networks of friends and colleagues. And they gain greater knowledge and experience through the broad network of people they are helping,” she noted. Bradshaw concluded her speech with a wish and a hope for the Class of 2018. “I wish you all the very best success, in whatever ways you measure it, and I hope that being a ‘giver’ plays a fulfilling role in that journey.” Using humor, Camson shared his personal story of overcoming obstacles. “There may be hurdles in your path, you may stumble. Miller, a native of Poland and Holocaust survivor, was presented an honorary diploma from Smithtown High School West Principal John Coady. Smithtown High School East’s honor speaker Matthew Timmel recounted their journey from freshmen to senior year and the memories created along the way. He said that graduation was the recognition of an adventure that started 13 years ago, and no matter where they end up in life, Smithtown will remain their roots. Smithtown High School East’s Senior Class President Nicole Cahill told her fellow graduates to strive for excellence in every task, no matter how large or small. She said that if everyone in the Class of 2018 lives up to their full potential, “just imagine the effect on the world we can have.” Following the conferring of diplomas, both the Smithtown High School West and East Class of 2018 tossed their caps and celebrated their accomplishments with family and friends.

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.

Eagle Scout Honored Matthew Weinberg of Boy Scout Troop 125 of Commack recently completed the requirements for scouting’s highest award – the rank of Eagle Scout. For his community service project, Matthew designed and supervised the building of a portable

sheep shelter for the Smithtown Historical Society. Because this shelter is moveable, it can house sheep wherever they are and protect them from the harsh weather. Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor and

congratulated Matthew on his great accomplishment. “Achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is not easy as it takes a great deal of time, commitment and dedication from you and the support of your family,” Legislator Trotta said to Matthew.

A Lifelong Dream For the past 10 years, Holocaust survivor Mordechai Miller has shared his story of survival and how good people came to his aid with students in Christina Cone’s Holocaust and Genocide class at Smithtown High School West. Deprived of an education in Poland during World War II, Mr. Miller also expresses to the students how they should be appreciative of their education. To honor Mr. Miller’s message of doing right by

others, Smithtown West helped make his lifelong dream of being a high school graduate finally come true. During the 103rd commencement of Smithtown High School West on June 21st, Mr. Miller was bestowed an honorary degree. Joining the Class of 2018, the 87-year-old donned a cap and gown and sat with his fellow graduates as he waited to hear his name called by Principal John Coady. “It’s very exciting,”

Mr. Miller said on being granted the honorary diploma. Added his daughter Leah Miller, “He has always wanted this opportunity and tonight, they have made his dream come true.” Mr. Miller came to America in 1956 where he settled in Brooklyn and met his wife. Together, they have four children, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He now resides in East Northport.

They immediately thought it was another IED, but it ended up being a tiny puppy with a rope around its neck. The puppy lay in agony, with its ears having been cut off, likely with a dull knife. The dog was full of blood and flies were surrounding it. With only hours left to live, Jensen scooped her up, knowing he could not leave her behind. He nursed him back to health, naming him Kral, and they quickly became inseparable. It was only days later when out on another mission that Fulmer found a litter of dying puppies that he tried to save. The survivor of that litter became his best friend, a beautiful puppy he named Syri. Both puppies were lucky enough to be saved by these two heroic airmen. Over the months that followed, they created strong bonds with them. Both of them faced a big challenge, knowing that they would not be comfortable leaving the beloved dogs behind when they went back to America. That’s when Guardians of Rescue stepped in to help bring them back home, as they have done for other

military members. The lengthy mission of bringing them back to the U.S. was begun in the middle of the night by former military personnel. The dogs are currently being held in the country of Jordan, where there has been a holy war against dogs since October 2017, as they wait for their flight to the U.S. “We know that everyone wants to see these dogs be brought back home and the airmen reunited with them,” adds Misseri. “This is a great way for people to help military members. They can make a donation to help cover the costs of making this reunion happen. Guardians of Rescue provides assistance to animals out on the streets. They are located in Long Island, New York, and they help animals in many places beyond where they are located. Options for Community Living, Inc. (Options) has been an active partner with Long Island Volunteer Enterprise (LIVE) for more than 10 years. LIVE pairs Long Island corporate volunteers with not-forprofit organizations, encouraging companies to give back to their local communities. This year, for the first time, 31 employees from Smithtown-based nonprofit Options volunteered a total of 170 hours to help two Long Island nonprofit agencies: The Book Fairies in Freeport, New York, and Long Island Against Domestic Violence. The Book Fairies is a notfor-profit organization that collects new and gently used reading material for people in need throughout metropolitan New York. Their mission is to foster literacy and academic success, provide a respite from personal struggles and nurture a love of reading across age groups.

Options’ employees spent the day sorting and packing books to be distributed to schools and community organizations in highpoverty locations. “They came to our warehouse with smiling faces, colorful tee-shirts and abundant enthusiasm to spend the day sorting thousands of donated books into appropriate categories for our up-coming free book fair for teachers. We wouldn’t have been prepared for the event without their help,” said Rebecca Kennedy Lakhani, Book Fairies executive director! Options’ employees were happy to know that their work had made a difference. “I loved reading as a kid, so it feels good to have a small part in helping another kid perhaps learn to love reading too,” said Jessica Schwab, Options’ development assistant. Options’ employees also volunteered with Long Island Against Domestic

Violence (LIADV),which is committed to the empowerment of victims and survivors of domestic violence providing them with shelter and support and working with law enforcement and the community to prevent abuse. The Options’ group completed a spring cleanup project of gardening, painting and more! “We are so grateful for the volunteer efforts of the Options’ staff. Their dedicated efforts enhanced the shelter making it a more welcoming environment for our residents. It looks beautiful,” said Ashley Huston, shelter director. “We understand firsthand how valuable volunteers are to a nonprofit agency,” said Yolanda RobanoGross, Options’ executive director. “So, it is especially gratifying to give back to two very deserving not-forprofits that do important work in the community.”

Six Long Island artists were selected to become the first ever Resident Artist Members of the Art League of Long Island’s new Resident Artist Membership Program (RAMP) aimed at supporting artists by offering opportunities to more fully develop their skills, learn to teach their craft, and become leaders in the creative community. The program, conceived by Art Education Program Coordinator Andrea Manning, offers Resident Artist Members access to the Art League’s state of the art studios through open studio time and 50 free hours of class

time each semester. In addition to strengthening their skills with studio and class time, they will experience what it is like to assist behind the scenes in a busy not-for-profit art center and will share what they learn with each other at RAMP meetings and with the public through monthly blog posts. The membership runs June 1st, 2018 through June 1st, 2019, culminating in the opportunity to teach a one-day workshop in the summer of 2019.

Military members stationed in the Middle East are subjected to some brutal conditions, but every once in a while something happens that puts a smile on their face and brings them some comfort. That’s exactly what happened to two airmen, who within days of each other were brought together with puppies in need of rescue. They rescued the dogs and went on to create strong bonds with them. Now, the Guardians of Rescue are working to help the airmen bring the dogs back home to America with them for good. “They have created inseparable bonds with these dogs and can’t imagine leaving them behind in the Middle East as they come back home to the states,” Robert Misseri, founder and president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We have helped other airmen bring dogs back home with them, and we are going to help these two as well. As they fight for us, we will be fighting for them.” The two dogs will be arriving at John F. Kennedy International Airport in July. They will stay in New York for a few weeks before being transported by Guardians of Rescue to El Paso, Texas, where both of the airmen live. The two men, Staff Sgt. Legislator Susan A. Berland attended the end of the year breakfast for the Half Hollow Hills faculty on June 22nd, 2018. Legislator Berland presented proclamations to Josephina Watt, a World Language Teacher of Spanish who is retiring after 13 years of teaching in

the district and to Patrick Rendon, an Assistant Principal who accepted a position in the Long Beach School District as the Director of Instructional Technology. “As a proud Half Hollow Hills East mom, I want to thank Josephina Watt and Patrick Rendon for

all their invaluable service to the Half Hollow Hills School District and to their students,” said Legislator Berland. “They made such a positive impact on our children and I wish them nothing but the best in their future endeavors.”

Pool Safety Discussion

The warm weather is here, and there’s no better way to stay cool and comfortable than with a nice dip in the swimming pool! However, safety must always come first so before school was out, Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly met with students at Birchwood Intermediate School in Melville to discuss pool safety tips and honor those who participated in Suffolk County’s 2018 “Be Pool Smart” poster contest. Established in 2007, the annual competition invites elementary school students to promote the importance of pool safety and prevent accidental drownings by creating a poster illustrating safety tips. Joining Legislator Donnelly in honoring third-grade students Julia Montilla, Bianca Ruiz and Ariana Sosa, who FACULTY HONORED - Pictured: Legislator Susan A. 50 Years of Service Commissioner Wayne Eckstein and Ex-Captain Francis “Chip” Ferrari were each presented with 50 Years of Service Awards by the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY).

In the “Be Pool Smart” poster contest, one entry is selected from all of those submitted Countywide to be used as a part of a seasonal safety campaign from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services. Students from schools in South Huntington, Half Hollow Hills, Deer Park and North Babylon School Districts were invited to participate in this year’s District 17 preliminary competition. “It was clear that the students had given great thought into the importance of pool safety and I appreciated their enthusiasm in sharing their personal experiences and some of their own safety tips,” said Legislator Donnelly. “This, combined with the information provided by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, should go a long way in making it a great and safe summer season for all.”

The Department also served a congratulatory cake to the members at a meeting honoring the firefighters for their service.

The Melville Fire Department recently recognized two veteran volunteer firefighters for their 50 Years of dedicated service to the department and community. Ex-Captain and

Some of the safety tips that Legislator Donnelly discussed with the students included: • Always swim with a buddy; • Never push or jump on others; • Always remove toys from the pool, which can be very tempting to young children; • Never leave children of any age alone in or near the water; • Children can drown in just a few inches of water so be sure to empty the pool cover; • Keep a first aid kit stocked and available near the pool; • Know how to dial 9-1-1 and how to get help in an emergency; • Learn to swim!
