Dozens of PSEG Long Island employees, including Paul DiBenedetto of East Northport, recently participated in the Marie Kondo Challenge to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Led by the company’s volunteer group, ASPIRE— Asians & Pacific Islanders Reaching for Excellence, employees were challenged to clean out unneeded and unwanted items and
clothing from their homes. The Lunar New Year spring cleaning is a tradition in some Asian cultures that symbolizes a fresh start to a prosperous new year. As a result of the challenge, two vanloads of clothing were donated to LI Coalition for the Homeless. “Volunteering gives you the opportunity to make a positive difference in
someone else’s life that you may not interact with on a day-to-day basis,” said Paul DiBenedetto, PSEG Long Island employee/East Northport resident. “I’ve been involved in a number of volunteer events over the years, and I always look forward to volunteering because you can tell you’re appreciated for the work you’re doing, which makes you want to do it again and
again.” “This was a wonderful way to embrace the diversity of our employees, while supporting the community we serve,” said PSEG Long Island’s ASPIRE president Linda Zhang. “Not only did our participants have fun doing their spring cleaning, but we were able to help those in our community meet some basic needs. It was a day of celebration at Smithtown High School West as the Class of 2019, including friends and family, celebrated the 104th annual commencement exercise on June 26. Following the opening processional in which students marched onto the football field to “Pomp and Circumstance,” coclass presidents Rebecca Farrell and Alexandra Nieto led the salute to the flag, followed by the jazz choir performing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Smithtown Central School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Grossane congratulated the graduates, not only for moving on to their next ventures in life, but for all they have contributed and for becoming role models for future generations to follow. “We are so very proud of what you have
accomplished to arrive here on this graduation day,” he said. “Promise me you will always remember – you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think. Always believe in yourselves and I wish you all the best that life has to offer.” Honor speaker Jonathan Pofcher followed by addressing his classmates, saying it’s impossible to sum up everyone’s high school experience in just a couple of minutes. “We’re experiencing what’s called a period of liminality, a time between two stages in our lives,” Pofcher said. “It’s uncomfortable and creepy, like being somewhere you’re not supposed to be. We’re not quite high school students and not quite college students, and that’s weird. We have the time to just think – to look back on the last 13 years.” Following Pofcher were
co-class presidents Farrell and Nieto, each of whom shared their thoughts on the past four years and what’s to come in the future. “We have felt the pressure as everyone watched…waiting and hoping that we would all succeed,” Farrell said. “There may have been some obstacles along the way, but being here today, we have all made it to the end line. We won this game.” Smithtown High School West Principal John Coady then presented the senior class, and diplomas were awarded, with assistance from the board of education and school counselors. After the concert choir seniors and the jazz choir performed “The Sweetest Days,” seniors tossed their caps in the air and it was time to rejoice.
The 409-members of the Class of 2019 celebrated the completion of their academic journey at Smithtown High School East during the school’s 104th annual commencement exercises on the football field on June 26. Accompanied by the board of education, administration and faculty, the graduates processed across the field to the cheers of family and community to Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance.” Senior class president Kelly McSweeney led the flag salute while the senior class concert choir, under the baton of Mark Hegreness, sang “The StarSpangled Banner.” In his welcome address, Smithtown High School East Principal Dr. Kevin Simmons told the students, “Our future is bright with you at the helm of the community.”
He also encouraged them to keep making informed decisions and choices, stay committed to their beliefs, plan wisely, create their own destinies and enjoy their time with family. Smithtown Central School District’s Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Jennifer Bradshaw spoke about a Wharton School of Business study on whether givers or takers are more successful in life. She noted that givers “have longterm advantages” and said givers are “not pushovers” and “do not keep score.” During his class address, Honor Speaker Thomas Fanning gave his peers words to live by to strengthen their character, such as integrity, perseverance, humility and resilience. “If all else fails, just be optimistic,” he said. “You never know where your principles and audacity will take you.”
During the senior class presentation, McSweeney reminisced about the last four years of high school. “We need to remember why we are who we are,” she remarked. Dr. Simmons then presented the senior class to the community while the board of education, assisted by school counselors, called each of the graduates to the podium to receive his or her diploma, becoming alumni of the Smithtown Central School District. The ceremony culminated with the senior class choir singing “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” which was a tribute to parents and graduates, before marching off of the field to join their families and friends. The board of education, administration and faculty extend best wishes of happiness and success to the Class of 2019.

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received help from Rebuilding Together Long Island. Recently the organization received a letter of thanks for all their help that was extremely touching. The sender wrote, “I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and
he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.” With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! On June 11, the Smithtown Central School District Board of Education appointed veteran educator Russell J. Stewart as interim superintendent, effective July 3. Mr. Stewart joins Smithtown from the Center Moriches Union Free School District, where he currently serves as superintendent of schools. “Mr. Stewart is a highly respected administrator who brings with him the professional experience, educational knowledge and interpersonal communication skills the Board requires to effectively lead our school district during this transition period,” said Smithtown Board of Education President Jeremy Thode. During his nine years as superintendent of Center Moriches, Mr. Stewart successfully oversaw the introduction and expansion of a number of programs, including the implementation of a
districtwide International Baccalaureate endeavor, creation of a community service involvement program for high school students and expansion of a comprehensive K-12 8:1:1 program. He was also responsible for the enhancement of school safety through various efforts, such as increased security protocols and the promotion of a positive school culture and social-emotional wellness programs. Additionally, he oversaw the successful completion of a comprehensive capital improvement project. “I thank the Board for this opportunity and am excited to work with them and confirm my commitment to the students of Smithtown,” Mr. Stewart said. “I also look forward to collaborating with the community, students, staff and my central office colleagues to create a unified vision and further enhance the educational opportunities
for all students.” As part of his more than 30 years of educational experience, Mr. Stewart has served as principal, assistant principal, dean of discipline and chairperson for health, physical education and interscholastic athletics at Commack High School. He was also an assistant principal and principal at Western Suffolk BOCES Consortium. Mr. Stewart spent his first 10 years in education as a health and physical education teacher. A resident of Manorville, Mr. Stewart holds a Bachelor of Arts in health and physical education from the University of Sioux Falls and a Master of Arts in school administration and supervision from New York University. The board is actively continuing its search for a permanent superintendent of schools and will keep the community updated as the progress continues.

Commack Middle School seventh grade students, Athena Efthymiou and Jillian Cestaro, were selected as local and state honorees for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards recognizes outstanding volunteer service and dedication. The scope and time of their selfless efforts to help others put them within the top ten percent of all honorees considered for selection in New York State, earning them the state-level Prudential Spirit of Community Certificate of Excellence Award.
In addition to her Certificate of Excellence, Jillian Cestaro is also the recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award. This award, presented on behalf of President Donald Trump, recognizes Americans who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country. Jillian is a founding member of a family run group called, “Kids 4 Causes.” Jillian participates in fundraisers and volunteers time to support different nonprofit organizations, providing adaptive bicycles for those with handicaps, making pillows for hospital
patients, to name a few. She and her team have raised $5,000 for Kids 4 Causes. Jillian was inspired by the classic starfish story, that one person, one step at a time, can make a difference. Athena helped to raise over $10,000 for the Crohn’s and Colitis foundation. Over the past four years she has been tirelessly working with her “Team Miou,” fundraising and organizing the annual “Take Steps Walk.” Athena’s efforts were so impressive that she was nominated to be the spokesperson or “Shining Star” of the 2017 walk.

SCIENCE SYMPOSIUM HIGHLIGHTS STUDENTS - The work of science research and Science Olympiad students from Smithtown High School West was on display in the school’s library during the Science Symposium and awards ceremony on May 20. Science research students displayed their research boards and showed short videos of their novel scientific discoveries. The event culminated in the presentation of awards to the top students in each discipline. Ranucci Earns Press Club Award and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Summer Journalism Workshop. Danielle credits her success to the experience she gained through leading the school newspaper, The Courant, and the school’s literary magazine, Etchings. Christina Semple, adviser of The Courant since 2001, shared that Danielle is the second Commack High School student to ever win this award. The publication has been honored with over 400 awards for writing,
art and design since 2001. “Danielle has covered a variety of stories throughout her time on the newspaper staff. She never backs down from a challenge in reporting. It has been a pleasure to watch her skills grow and flourish over these past four years,” said Semple. Danielle will be attending Princeton University in the fall as an English/ Comparative Literature major with a certificate in Creative Writing.

New Minivan To Assist Residents With Disabilities The Town of Smithtown Senior Citizens Department has acquired a new minivan to use as a transportation service for those with disabilities who have no other means of transportation. This new minivan, plus the existing bus, is available to serve residents in the township with disabilities who are over the age of 18. “Think about the average Long Island resident, living in a suburban home… We rely on our automobiles to take us everywhere. Thanks to this service, all adults living with disabilities will have the same means. This service will immediately enhance the quality of life for Smithtown people living with disabilities.” -
Supervisor Ed Wehrheim The Senior Citizens Department currently provides low-cost transportation to seniors over the age of 60 for essential services like doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping, and bank visits. The addition of a disabilities minivan will help individuals over the age of 18 to live more independently. The vehicle is intended to make travel to essential services more flexible in transporting residents within the township. “Transportation can be one of the biggest obstacles for individuals living with disabilities. We do not want any of our residents to feel like they are cut
off from the community. This indispensable service provides accessibility and mobility to all our citizens living with disabilities.” - Councilwoman Lynne Nowick Residents who wish to utilize this resource are encouraged to contact Michelle Musso at the Office for People with Disabilities at 631-3607642 at least one week in advance of the requested transportation date. The service operates Mondays through Fridays, excluding town holidays. Regular operating hours are 9AM3:30PM, while summer operating hours are 9AM - 2:30PM.

Community Awards Honorees Three outstandingly community-minded students from Northport High School were recently recognized by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program for their service of the surrounding community. This youthrecognition program chooses recipients solely on volunteer and community service and is the largest in the country. Sophomore sisters Emily and Kaitlyn Berger and senior Charlotte Bender were recognized by the program as local honorees and were congratulated by their
principal Daniel Danbusky on June 13. For many years, Emily and Kaitlyn have served the community with their family by preparing food and gift bags for families in need by and donating them to local food pantries, the Northport VA, and section eight housing. Both of them serve almost every weekend and enjoy filling bags and writing encouraging notes to people in need. “It truly feels so much better to give than to receive,” said Emily. Graduating senior Charlotte Bender was
recognized for her commitment to volunteering in the Commack ambulance core, in which she assists local EMTs and paramedics. Charlotte volunteers at least once a week for a shift up to seven hours and has earned her NYS first Responder card. Additionally, Charlotte has helped run an annual toy drive at the high school. Both Kaitlyn Berger and Charlotte bender were also recognized for having gone above and beyond their community service requirement, making them recipients of the President’s Volunteer Service Award.
