Inspiration. It can come from anywhere. A song. A movie. A book. A beautiful sunset. A peaceful walk along the shoreline. Anywhere. As I sit here on yet another deadline day, scrambling to finish the last of my work for the week, I am in search of some of that inspiration for my column. Last week’s article drew perhaps some of the greatest attention on the social media circuit, as I was pleasantly surprised by numerous “likes,” “comments” and “shares” from those supporters who follow my page on

Facebook (see above). It’s amazing how a little positive feedback can provide that much-needed affirmation that, yes, you are doing something worthwhile that people appreciate. And, on that note, I do appreciate the support of you, the readers. Without an audience, words are merely diary entries, notes to self never meant to see the light of day. But with interaction, and reaction, they take on new life. Of course, it helps to actually get out from behind the desk and live life from time to time too. How else can you expect to experience

those glorious sunsets and shorelines? And summer is indeed the perfect time for all of the above. Work hard to play hard, right? Well this is the season to take those vacation days, even if it’s only to catch up on your reading or start watching a new TV series. For those more adventurous among us, take a trip to NYC, or Fire Island, or Montauk… pick a direction, and just go. Make it your mission this summer to find the inspiration that has been missing from your life. And once you find it – write about it, take pictures of it, find some new way to capture it… and savor it.

Park Dedication Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone and Town Council Members Susan A. Berland, Eugene Cook and Tracey A. Edwards joined community members June 20th in dedicating Coral Park, a long-awaited neighborhood park that was recently completed. “This is a classic neighborhood park,” Supervisor Petrone said during the brief ceremony. “It’s walkable. People come in and out of it – people who live in the community and the neighborhood. It’s not just a park for the sake of having a park. It’s a park that is an integral part of everyone’s quality of life and everyone’s daily living. So that’s what makes us happy. That’s what it’s all about.” Designed by Town staff, the 2.8-acre park has a playground, a basketball court, a pavilion and game tables and is an innovative, fitness-themed park. The playground is appropriate for both toddlers and youth and contains play zones that help develop upper body strength instead of the typical platforms and slides. An adult fitness area includes six fitness/cardio adult exercise play stations and a half-mile jogging path. For the less active, the pavilion/sitting area has picnic tables, a shade shelter and stone tables and chairs for playing chess, checkers and dominoes. The park includes a large open lawn area appropriate for a range of activities, from pickup ball games to kite flying. Among the park’s extensive landscaping are 79 trees,

Aneurysm Awareness Walk Hundreds of walkers, including brain aneurysm survivors and their family and friends, are expected to attend Long Island’s Sixth Annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Four-Mile Fun Run/Two-Mile Walk at Jones Beach State Park hosted on September 27th by the Brain Aneurysm Center of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute (CNI) and the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), the health system announced today. SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS - The Smithtown College Aid Committee was founded in 1948 with a goal to support and encourage High School Seniors in their college endeavors. Using money raised through their various events during the year, the Committee funds these scholarship opportunities. This year’s scholarship recipients were selected out of over fifty applicants. A very special luncheon was held recently to honor over forty senior citizen volunteers at the Smithtown Senior Citizen Department. According to Laura Greif, Program Director, “the department wanted to thank our volunteers who create beautiful handmade items for many deserving groups in our community.” The donations included baby hats and blankets for the neonatal unit at Stony Brook University Hospital, lap robes and pillows for

residents of St. Johnland Nursing Center, handmade patriotic quilts for veterans at Northport Veterans Hospital and Long Island State Veterans Home and colorful handmade baby quilts for homeless and at risk mothers and children to Madonna Heights. Ms. Greif also commended the senior citizen volunteers who provide ongoing wellness classes (dance and exercise), entertainment programs (bingo and music) and services

(boutique staffing). The fundraising efforts of the Center Committee and the volunteer quilters were recognized as their efforts benefit all the senior citizens who utilize the Smithtown Senior Citizen Department. Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta recognized Samuel David Isaac of Boy Scout Troop 125 for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout at his recent Court of Honor held at the Commack United Methodist Church. For his Eagle Scout Project, Sam built three benches and put a fire pit in at the F-shelter campsite at the West Hills County Park in Melville.

The fire pit ensures a more contained and safer environment in which to have a campfire. His troop also uses this campsite for its annual Holiday in the Woods outing. Legislator Trotta presented Sam with a proclamation at the ceremony. “This is a very proud moment for Sam, his parents and family, as well as his troop leaders and fellow scouts. I extend

my congratulations to him for being an outstanding member of the community and hope that he will remain active in his community. His accomplishment has set a high standard for commitment and dedication, which I hope will inspire the youth of our great County of Suffolk,” said Legislator Robert Trotta.

Last Hope also lends out humane “Have a Heart” traps and guides novice trappers. “Fix-A-Feral” has subsidized the spaying and neutering of over 16,000 cats since it began 11 years ago. “In the past, we spent a lot of time planning fundraisers to support Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” initiative,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope. “We hold a luncheon, a raffle and rely on donations from a kind corporate sponsor to fund our vouchers, but the number of feral cats on Long Island is immense. Life On Fire Island

The ecosystem on Fire Island is as diverse as it is complex. Everything, from the smallest tick to the largest shark, can be found on the Fire Island National Seashore. In my six years of living on Fire Island, I have seen whales, sharks, dolphins and many other aquatic creatures. The whale sightings are very rare, but dolphins can be seen almost everyday. Sharks wash up on the beach occasionally, but you never see their dorsal fins popping up out of the water as in many popular movies. Just the other day on my way to work, I saw a small, dried shark on the sand getting pecked at by seagulls. Types of marine life aren’t the only animals making a presence on Fire Island. Birds, insects and

other land species have also been spotted. We have a myriad of bird species on Fire Island. It seems like each year, people spot a different kind of bird! Some of the aviary species that call this barrier island home include seagulls, piping plovers and ospreys. Fire Island has an overwhelming number of insects. Pound for pound, insects make up the most populous genre of life on Fire Island. Mosquitos, ticks, spiders and beetles are literally everywhere you look. Some claim that this abundance is a bad thing, but they are wrong. Insects are the backbone to a healthy ecosystem. Insects are the most crucial part of Fire Island’s environment. Deer are arguably Fire Island’s most shining feature. These fourlegged gentle giants

scare day-trippers and amaze residents. Their playful antics and distinct personalities make deer a Fire Island staple. Foxes are becoming more and more plentiful on our little island. Rummaging through garbage pails or stealthily walking the beach, these little creatures are truly wondrous. Watching these animals from your bedroom window truly gives you an understanding of what it is like to survive. Following the notorious Hurricane Sandy, our island was decimated. Now, Fire Island and its inhabitants are quickly regaining their strength. These animals will remain part of the Fire Island landscape for years to come, for us to enjoy, our kids to enjoy and their kids to enjoy.

Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. is thrilled to announce that it has again received a $5,000 grant from the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) to fund Last Hope’s “FixA-Feral” program, which offers financial assistance to the Long Island public to spay/neuter feral cats. This program aids in alleviating the tremendous feral cat overpopulation problem as this discount incentive also enables the public to afford to help more cats. In 2003, Last Hope initiated its “Fix-A-Feral” voucher system, which makes the cost of spay/ neuter and vaccines for feral cats more economical to the public by reducing the price at participating veterinary clinics. Voucher users must agree to participate in the TNR ( Tr a p / N e u t e r / R e t u r n ) program, whereby the cats are returned (if not tame) to the location where they were trapped; and then commit to feeding, and providing shelter for the cats. Gordon presented the commemorative plaque to the Center’s leadership and Christopher Pendergast. “The dream to find a cure continues,” said Pendergast, who conceived the concept of a comprehensive ALS clinic at Stony Brook 15 years ago that led to its establishment. “Stony Brook has created something special with this Center of Excellence, and its talented physicians and researchers continue to search clues that may bring us to the doorstep of that cure.” Pendergast said his Ride for Life Organization will continue to fund ALS research and clinical services at the Center. Another Hole-In-One It’s Another Hole In One for Angela’s House. Despite harsh weather conditions, tickets sold out at the Indian Hills Golf Course for the Angela’s House Golf Outing. Moral was high, and the united support from friends and family could not be deterred by the morning delay due to torrential down pours.

The Golfers came out to support Angela’s House for the annual golf outing in Northport on June 9th. The 12th Annual Golf Outing was a major success for the charity and helped raise a great deal of money for medically frail children and their families across Long Island. The LeMaire family was a main sponsor for this

event. Brandon LeMaire, their son was one of the children who Angela’s House served. The Family holds a close connection with Bob Policastro, and the organization, and sponsored the event in Brandon’s memory. The event had the support of a number of corporations including TD Bank, SJS Construction, United Asset

Strategies, Horan Martello & Morrone, NSLIJ, EW Howell and the Tom Collins – Chris Panatier – 9-11 Memorial Foundation. Indian Hills Golf & Country Club did a fantastic job at the event, providing golfers with an array of activities that were enjoyed rain or shine.
