retton Woods Elementary School students recently performed a creative production of Munchkin Mediation: Conflict Resolution in Oz. The play was staged by Phoebe Czachor’s 2nd grade and Veronica Weeks’ and Tara Gray’s 5th grade classes. Munchkin Mediation is about all of the characters of Oz arguing and disagreeing. The witches disagreed with one another, as well as Dorothy and Toto, and the Lion and the Tinman.

Let me begin by extending a fin of appreciation to all those fans who have written in after what I like to call “The Great Snail Debacle.” There were a few condolences on the untimely passing of Squeegee; but, mostly, readers seemed to side with me in my quest to rid my tank of this unwanted aquatic vacuum. Kudos to you all for seeing things my way! On another note, following the intruder’s departure, my Human was horrified to notice that my fins seemed unusually frayed and damaged. Was it stress? Was it the deteriorating water quality due to this creature’s special “cookies”
and the residue they left behind? Or, was it my refusal to be “scooped” out of my underwater oasis into my old bowl for temporary maintenance and cleaning? This last option seems most likely, as I fight my Human every time I see her coming with that cup. I know it only means one thing – bath time. At any rate, when I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the glass, I was truly horrified at the state of my once-luxurious aqua fins. I sulked for days, burrowing into the gravel and hiding behind my plant at the first sign of visitors, not wanting anyone to see me in such a decimated state. But, several weeks later, they seem to be slowly
shaping up and rejuvenating themselves. Hopefully, I’ll be runway ready in another month or so. Speaking of, August 16th will mark my year and a half birthday with my Human. Rumor has it this is also her birthday, so I suppose I’ll have to share my cupcake this time. I guess it’s only fair, seeing as she’s provided such exceptional food and shelter all these months, even including me in the family’s holiday celebrations and such. I hope I get a festive party hat again! ‘Til then, this is Buddy, thanking readers once again for their continuous love and support. Your letters keep me swimming happily - until I find something else to grumble about, of course.

The illnesses of high concern at this time are Zika virus, West Nile virus and rabies virus. Residents who think they may have been exposed to these viruses or have questions or concerns about these illnesses are

Zika virus, newly emerging as a worldwide threat to public health, is spread primarily by the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito, through sexual transmission or transfusion. Although Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are not present in New York State, a related species named Aedes albopictus is active in the downstate region, and may be able to effectively transmit the virus. Research is ongoing. Zika virus may cause mild or no symptoms in many, however, Zika virus infection has the potential to cause severe birth defects. Women who are pregnant or of childbearing age and their male partners are urged to take precautions
to avoid mosquito bites. If you wish to keep informed about national and/or local developments regarding Zika virus, may visit the Suffolk County website at Zika Information. For medical questions related to Zika virus, contact your health care provider or call the Public Health Information Line. Rabies virus is most often seen among wild animals such as raccoons, bats, skunks and foxes, but any mammal can be infected with rabies virus, which is invariably fatal. Pets and livestock can get rabies if they are not vaccinated to protect them against infection. Residents of all towns are asked to call the Information Line number to report raccoons that come into contact with humans or pets. With the report of a

Friends of America’s Vet Dogs recently presented a $14,000 check to America’s Vet Dogs to sponsor two new service/assistance dogs for honorably discharged veterans in need. The presentation took place at the America’s Vet Dogs & Guide Dog Foundation facility in Smithtown. The proceeds were generated at a recent Chinese Auction held
in Sayville by Friends of America’s Vet Dogs - a group of 22 friends who joined together with the sole purpose of helping as many veterans as possible through the assistance dog program. Group members come from Sayville, Patchogue, Brentwood, Hauppauge, Farmingville and Holbrook and events are held in all of those communities year
round to support America’s Vet Dogs. Last year, the group sponsored three new service/assistance dogs and hopes to raise enough for a third dog this year as well. The group will be sponsoring a $10 Comedy Show Night in Bohemia on July 10th and can be reached at 631.567.9493 for further details.

Scholar Athletes Recognized Smithtown Central School District studentathletes Jackie Cuccurullo and Matt McDonnell were recently named News 12 Scholar Athletes. A member of the Smithtown High School East varsity girls lacrosse team, Cuccurullo is an AllDivision and All-County player, a five-year varsity
starter and two-year captain. McDonnell, a Smithtown High School West senior, is a four-year forward on the boys soccer team and also joined the football team as a kicker this year. The News 12 Scholar Athlete award program recognizes outstanding ability shown by high
school seniors in athletics, scholarship, leadership and service to others. Nominations are sent in by coaches across Long Island. Winners were recently recognized at an awards dinner and presented with a $1,000 scholarship check.
Youth Leadership Leadership in the Community, an advanced youth leadership program, will be held beginning on Thursday, July 14th, and running for four consecutive Thursdays, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Horizons Center Community Room, 161 East Main Street in
Smithtown. Students must commit to attending all sessions and mentoring meetings. For those entering grades 8th to 11th who reside in the Smithtown Township. Students will develop and execute their own community projects, guided by the Youth

Dead Birds: Residents are also encouraged to report sightings of dead birds, such as robins, crows, blue jays and hawks that may have been infected with the virus to the Public Health Information Line. Birds that meet the Department of Health Services’ criteria will be picked up between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Accepted bird specimens are tested for the presence of the virus in the bird population. If it is determined by health officials that a reported
bird is not needed for testing or if a dead bird is discovered on a weekend, residents should take proper precautionary measures: put the dead bird into a doubled bag, using gloves and a shovel, and dispose of it in the trash. Special Thank You Servicemen and women from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard joined together for the 8th Annual Soldiers on the Sound Fishing Tournament on Saturday, June 11th at the Smithtown Bay Yacht Club (SBYC) in Nissequogue. This year, 150 active members of the military powered out of the Smithtown Marina on 61 boats for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie - a record high for this event. The winning fish weighed in at 6 lbs 4 ozs and was caught by Smithtown Bay Yacht Club member Andy Smith. He was accompanied on the boat by his first mate, Ret. Colonial Rob Landsiedel, Major Jesse Fritz and Tech Sgt Nathan Dean from the 106th Rescue Wing - Air National Guard. Andy’s name will be added to the coveted winner’s plaque, the Ed Jakubowski Memorial Soldiers on the Sound Fishing Tournament Award, named in honor of a great patron of Soldiers on the Sound, which is proudly displayed in the SBYC lobby. “One of the best things about the event is the people you meet. In 2010 my crew consisted of Captain Jesse Fritz, Colonel Rob Landsiedel and another 106th Rescue Wing member. Since then Jesse and I have become good friends,” said Andy Smith. He continues “each year we do well and everyone goes home with dinner but this time we decided to go for the win! That meant fishing around rocks and losing multiple rigs snagging bottom. The majority of the fleet went west but we went north and east to Crane’s neck where big fish are caught. The first fish was a 19 inch keeper and things looked promising but then the wind kicked up and we had to move to maintain the drift. On the first drift in the new spot I felt a light tug and then another, I set up on the fish and pulled a 6 lb 4 oz fish to the surface. Rob carefully netted it and we were excited. Throughout the rest of the event we kept hearing of other decent fish caught but at weigh-in we took the prize. It felt great to win but more importantly to share the victory with my crew.” Soldiers on the Sound began with breakfast and boat assignments. For some it was an introduction, for others,
a reunion. The Marines from Garden City presented the colors as the National Anthem was played. Then they were off... 61 boats paraded out the Smithtown Marina to meet up in the Smithtown Bay. At the stroke of 9 a.m., they were all off to their “secret” spots to try to reel in a “doormat” fluke. The weather cooperated until about noon, when for the first time, it rained on the Tournament. The bright and tough young military men and women were prepared and stuck it out. Soldiers, captains and first mates returned from fishing to an incredible display of the American Flag Arch provided by the Smithtown and St. James Fire Departments. Once on shore, everyone feasted on an incredible array of food including hot dogs and
hamburgers cooked by members of the Hauppauge Fire Department, a ‘low country boil’ complete with shellfish and corn and a smorgasbord of catered dishes provided by Ruland Road Deli (Melville). Every participant was eligible to win incredible prizes donated by local merchants and national corporations. The grand prize was donated by SIMRAD, who donated a NSS7 Evo2 GPS Fishfinder Combo. Additional grand prizes included custom engraved military reels from Wes Seigler at TRUTH Reels, 2 night/3 day stay at Hawks Cay Florida Keys Resort, 55” and 40” TV’s and kayaks. Other prizes included 60 fishing rod and reel combos, tickets to a Billy Joel concert along with autographed Billy Joel
CD’s and memorabilia, baseball tickets to see the Yankees and the Mets, K2 coolers, Weber grills, Bose speakers, and the list goes on. There were over 125 prizes raffled off thanks to generous donors. L&L Wholesale Bait of Bay Shore generously donated all the spearing and squid bait distributed to all the captains for the event for the second year in a row. Soldiers on the Sound Fishing Tournament began eight years ago when SBYC member and Kings Park resident Mark Garry, who was inspired by the images of war, to do something to “give back” to the local servicemen and women for their service to our country. Mark teamed up with fellow SBYC members Skip Hein and Roger Smith and together they pooled their resources. Skip’s military background made him a perfect liaison with the local military community and since Roger served on the board at the SBYC, that solidified the relationship between the event and the location. Together they decided that a fishing tournament would be much more entertaining and relaxing than just a big party. “I decided on a fishing tournament because I always found fishing to be a stress reliever for me,” said Garry. “When work was busy, and it always was, I went out fishing with my boys every chance I could. This tournament is our way of saying ‘thank you’ for the sacrifices U.S. military members make to protect our country.” This unique event is free for all participants - all captains, first mates and “pink ladies” (dedicated group of helpers) are volunteers. The entire event runs on the generous donations of the sponsors. This tournament is open to active serviceman and prior registration is required. Swim Safety Program Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro would like to inform residents that the Suffolk County Police Athletic League is offering its “Swim for Survival Instructional Program” for those children who have no swimming experience. The program is designed to teach basic water survival skills to children in a short period of time. This program is not for children who have had basic swimming instructions, either through the Red Cross, Y.M.C.A., or Safety Swim Programs. The Program is open to children 5 to 10 years old. The instructions will be conducted on four

AHRC Suffolk advocates through art with the “It Matters to Me” campaign! On June 16th, over 200 people attended AHRC Suffolk’s Night at the Museum featuring their It Matters to Me campaign! The It Matters to Me campaign was born from the voices of individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, their families, friends, caregivers and community who have rallied to support their right to choose how they live their lives! With proposed changes coming from the state that would greatly affect
AHRC Suffolk’s programs and services, they decided to go back to their grassroots beginnings and advocate through an art project created by the staff and individuals at their Westhampton Beach location. Although the project was originally just for the individuals that receive support from AHRC and their families, they thought why not extend it into the community and the state by asking ARCs throughout New York State to participate as well. What started off as a small mural containing

400 hundred squares ended with a large It Matters to Me mural that contained over 4,000 squares and is continuing to grow.
