A special ceremony to elevate a Boy Scout to the rank of Eagle Scout was held on June 9th at the American Legion James Ely Miller Post 833 in Smithtown for John A Lauria of Troop 3 (Smithtown). In order to advance to the highest rank in Boy Scouts, a youth must earn 22 Merit Badges (include 11 that are required) and provide leadership in planning and implementing a community service project. While only 22 Merit Badges are needed to attain the rank of Eagle Scout, Eagle Scout John A. Lauria earned a total of 31 merit badges demonstrating Scouting skills as well as civic awareness and vocational interests that may become lifelong hobbies. For his Eagle

Scout Service project, John planned, developed, painted and supervised the construction and delivery of carnival games for Sweet Briar Nature Center. Sweet Briar has been serving the community and it’s wildlife for many years making selecting Sweet Briar as the beneficiary of John’s Eagle project a natural selection. John began his scouting journey to Eagle as a Cub Scout with Pack 340 in Smithtown. After earning the Arrow of Light as a Webelo Scout, John decided to join Boy Scouts of America Troop 3. As members of Troop 3, John assumed various positions of responsibility including: Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leader. John was always willing to give of his time to help

Special Ceremony nurture and support the younger scouts in the troop. John attended National High Adventure camps at Florida Sea Base in Islamadora, FL and Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. At his Eagle Court of Honor special presentations were made by Assemblyman Michael J. Fitzpatrick, Suffolk County Comptroller John M. Kennedy Jr., Legislator Leslie Kennedy, National Eagle Scout Association Suffolk County Council Chapter Chairman, Joel Sallinger, Pam Farino representing Congressman Lee Zeldin, and a representative from Suffolk County Police Dept. Commissioner Timothy D. Sini.

Recently, Legislator Kennedy had the opportunity to spend time with four young men who had achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Erik Stickevers, Joseph Madonia, Peter Panagiotopoulos, and Michael Panagiotopoulos joined at St. James Lutheran for their Eagle Court of Honor ceremony. The Eagle Court of Honor is the highest distinction that a Boy Scout can receive in his Scouting life. Kennedy presented each accomplished young man with a proclamation

with the seal of the Suffolk County Legislature fixed upon it. In order to obtain the rank of Eagle Scout, each of these boys had to earn thirteen merit badges from an approved list, plus another eight of their own choosing, as well as complete the well-known Eagle Scout Project. For their Eagle Scout Project each boy chose a unique project. For his project, Erik Stickevers built an arbor and created a safety barrier between the fenced dog area at Smithtown Animal Shelter.

Joseph Madonia built six tables for the Smithtown Guide Dog Foundation, which are used for training and examination. Peter Panagiotopoulos made renovations to the Saint James Lutheran Church by installing waterproof flooring in the recreation area of the basement and the office. Finally, Michael Panagiotopoulos renovated the storage closet at the American Legion Hall in Saint James; he applied dry lock on the walls and installed cabinets and countertops.

Hauppauge High School theatre students enjoyed a Red Carpet Moment at the Islip Arts Council’s 2017 Teeny Awards, which was held on June 4th, 2017, at The Noel S. Ruiz Theatre at CM Performing Arts Center, Oakdale, New York. The Teeny Awards is the Islip Arts Council’s version of the Tony Awards for the Township’s high school students. Special Honor

Legislator Leslie Kennedy had the opportunity to honor Eagle Scout Salvatore Scalone at his Eagle Court of Honor last Saturday. Scalone fulfilled all the necessary requirements to become Eagle Scout, the highest distinction that can be bestowed upon a Boy Scout. After completing the twenty-one merit badges necessary to become and Eagle Scout Salvatore built a storage shed at the Smithtown Animal Shelter in order to complete his Eagle Scout Project. The Animal Shelter was in desperate need of this shed, which houses necessary equipment, and fortunately, Scalone took on the task.

The 2017 Spellman High Voltage Electronics Clean Tech Competition will be held at Stony Brook University, 100 Nicolls Road, Stony Brook at the Center for Leadership and Development & Service (LDS building) on Friday, July 14th. The theme of this year’s Competition is “Creating a Greener Future” and students will compete for over $20,000 in prize money. The final round of the

Competition will take place between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Students from 10 will have 15 minutes to explain the problem they identified, present their solution for mitigating the problem’s negative impacts. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

New Blades Students of Western Suffolk BOCES recently built four new blades as part of their studies for the Beautification Windmill on Route 109 in West Babylon. The old blades were there for over 20 years and needed replacement.

Last Saturday Legislator Leslie Kennedy was invited to take part in the Eagle Court of Honor for Kennedy Redmond of Troop 3. Legislator Kennedy presented Kennedy Redmond with a proclamation with the seal of the County Legislature

The fixture was hung in the Board Meeting room at the Hubbs Administration Building.

Celebrating dance, music, crafts and activities from all around the world, the students traveled around the school and into a new country to immerse in its culture. After learning a bit about life in each of the places, students participated in a cultural activity. In Mexico, students made and played their own maracas. In India, they crafted elephant masks. In Russia

and Ireland, students learned dances specific to those regions. Each time the students moved to a different station, their passport was stamped. “It’s a Small World” played over the public announcement system when it was time to rotate to a new country. After nineteen years serving this community on the Commack Board of Education, Mary Jo Masciello did not seek reelection this May. Mary Jo was a BOE member since 1998 and led the Board as President for 13 years. A former teacher and dedicated Commack PTA member and officer, Mary Jo and her husband raised four children, all Commack graduates. Her focus was always on doing what was best for this community and its children and to provide our students with an excellent learning experience. Third-grade students at St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District celebrated their heritage with Immigration Day on June 16th. For the Immigration Day project, students had to locate a document that was linked to their family history in some way. Each

student then traced their family heritage back to that document to show their lineage. Following a group musical performance highlighting different countries around the world in song – such as Australia, Brazil and Japan – the third-graders showed off their projects for parents

The Child Care Council of Suffolk’s (CCCS) 2017 Annual Meeting – recently held at Touro Law School, Central Islip, New York – featured a keynote address by Lawrence Levy, executive dean, National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University, who spoke about “The Changing Demographics of Child Care.” Levy discussed the dynamic demographic shifts that are altering the face of suburban Long Island as well as suburbs across the nation. He also described the need to reimagine child care beyond the current “9 to 5” model to meet the needs of working parents now and

in the future. The Child Care Council of Suffolk also recognized Suffolk County Legislator, 9th District, Monica R. Martinez as the “2017 Outstanding Child Care Advocate.” Martinez described the award as “one for the heart for me.” As a former principal and the sole former educator on the legislature, Martinez recognizes that there is “a lot of work to be done on the New York State level” and stated her “full support to advocate for children.” The CCCS Annual Meeting additionally featured the presentation of “Staff Anniversary Recognition” Awards and the reelection of the CCCS Board of Directors Officers:

President Michele LauerBader, Vice President Thomas Buonaiuto, Vice President Louis Hirschfield, Vice President Patricia Quiason, Secretary Alicia Marks, Treasurer Allen B. Breslow, Esq., and Immediate Past President Linda Armyn. “Skillful leadership from our Board of Directors significantly enhances the Child Care Council of Suffolk’s ability to provide essential services and resources to the many constituents we serve – parents, child care professionals, the business community, and most importantly, Long Island’s children,” said CCCS Executive Director Janet Walerstein.

New Campaign Launched With the theme, Our Goal is Zero: Let’s Get Every Child Covered, a new marketing, advertising, and communications campaign is being launched by Fidelis Care this week to raise awareness for the 100,000 children who are still uninsured in New York State, and to highlight the availability of quality, affordable coverage for kids under 19. As a Statewide health plan with more than 1.6 million members, Fidelis Care’s focus is on ensuring that all children have the opportunity for a healthy start in life. “Over the past several years, great strides have been made in reducing the number of uninsured children throughout the State,” said Pam Hassen, Fidelis Care Chief Marketing Officer. “We’ve been proud to be part of this concerted effort, and now, we’re strengthening our commitment to reach families in need. Our grassroots, communitybased outreach has always been the heart of the Fidelis Care mission.” According to the Children’s Defense Fund– New York, over 97 percent of the more than 4.5 million children in the State have health coverage, which is the highest level in history. Even with this positive statistic, approximately

three percent, or about 135,000 children, remain uninsured. Reaching this population is the goal of Fidelis Care’s campaign. The new campaign features TV, print, radio, outdoor, and digital advertising, video and social media promotion, as well as hundreds of “Every Child Covered” community events across the State where parents can find resources and information, ask questions of Fidelis Care Representatives, and receive help enrolling in a plan. Fidelis Care is also engaging its partnerships with the NY Liberty of the WNBA and New York City Football Club of Major League Soccer in the campaign, with players from each team featured in a TV spot promoting the “Let’s Get Every Child Covered” message. Lifestyle expert and Fidelis Care brand ambassador Evette Rios is also featured, reflecting upon her personal experience as a mom and her understanding of the importance of routine and preventive health care for kids. “With regular checkups, immunizations, vision and dental care, and a primary care provider who knows their health history, children with health insurance are more likely to

The Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning has issued a Request for Information to gather best practices, cost estimates, and keys to implementation and operation of such a program. Inaugural Induction Ceremony Another milestone was celebrated at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) when its inaugural chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) inducted 19 new members this year. These students, attending LIHSA from throughout Long Island, were recognized not only for their skill on the dance floor but also for their academic achievements and leadership. “These are highachieving students with evolving artistry and a genuine interest in so many areas of the arts,” said Lead Dance Instructor Dina Denis-Paolucci, who spearheaded efforts to launch the LIHSA chapter of the NHSDA. “I’m really proud of all of you,” she told her students at the induction ceremony. “This is a huge accomplishment for our program.” The LIHSA NHSDA members were directly involved in the development of their new chapter and helped plan the ceremony. They also

elected chapter officers: President Jared Stern, Vice President Sydney Weltman, Treasurer Rose Ozimkowski, Secretary Jason Fauser and Head of Fundraising Madison McGrath. “These students prove both in the classroom and on the stage how talented and technically advanced they are,” Jared said of his fellow inductees. “They spend hours training, performing and perfecting their craft. We as dancers must have much more than just technical excellence and pretty lines.
