The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties by dealing with it’s underlying causes, rather than merely treating symptoms. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! This organization provides a portfolio of programming delivered by professionals, so that a set of services is customized in a unique way for each Veteran and family they serve. This way they can solve all of the underlying causes of their situation at the same time. They truly believe that this is how you break the cycle of homelessness! Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. This week I would like to share yet another success story. Please note: The name of the individual mentioned in this story has been changed for confidentiality purposes. A Long Island resident, Tina, found New Ground when she was facing eviction from her apartment and had nowhere to go with her two young sons. She had fallen behind on rent because of a significant decrease in her paycheck and she did not have the means to pay off this debt or to afford a new apartment. She moved into the Long Term Housing Program with New Ground, where she paid an affordable rent based on her income and began to receive all the intensive social work and education services necessary to help her turn things around. While in the program, Tina paid off significant debts on her credit report, increased her score by over 200 points, created a savings and secured better paying stable employment. However, her real focus was education. She agreed with New Ground that the way out of her cycle of poverty was a higher degree to ensure greater
income. Tina juggled work, school and raising two boys along with many other life responsibilities during her years with New Ground. She attended an Associate Degree program part time and finished in three years. She then immediately started a Bachelor Degree program, which she completed in three years. Following each accomplishment, she secured better paying employment and used her extra earnings to reach her financial goals. Upon completing the New Ground program and moving into a market rent apartment, she continued her education plan. This May she graduated with her Master Degree in Social Work and this summer she will become a homeowner! Tina stated, “I feel awesome, I feel accomplished. It has been a long journey. I’m just happy and overwhelmed. I love working with people and there is a big need for people to care for other people now. It’s what New Ground did for me, helping me to get where I am. Now it’s my turn to help someone else.” As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. Celebrating our 60th season!!! The recreation department is proud to be offering summer swim lessons at The Smithtown Landing Country Club. Based upon the highly successful model of small group instruction and the Red Cross’ timetested curriculum, the Recreation Department’s Swim Program has classes for children from 4-years old through the early teenage years. While safety is of primary concern, the different class levels are designed to meet each child’s abilities and to challenge them to progress. The lessons are made enjoyable by incorporating fun activities to reinforce the water skills and to produce confidence. The Town program offers two 3-week sessions through July and early August and there are 3 different 50-minute classes each weekday morning. (See the Recreation
Department’s Summer booklet/Swimming Lessons for details). While many classes have a “limited enrollment”,

HONORED FOR TECH USE - Smithtown High School East media and art teacher Tim Needles received the International Society for Technology in Education’s Teacher Education Network Technology in Action award. Needle was recognized for sharing a lesson on video poetry along with some of the ways he incorporates technology into the art profession. The ISTE Technology in Action Award honors outstanding technology-using K-12 teachers. Winners are chosen for sharing lessons and video tutorials that show best practices for integrating technology for teaching and learning in a wide variety of grades, subjects, and technologies. Local Girl Scouts Recognized Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta attended the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County’s Gold Award Ceremony, where several scouts from his district were recognized for achieving the Gold Award. This is the highest honor one can achieve in the Girl Scouts. By identifying a need in the community and completing a project
that fulfills it, a scout obtains the Gold Award. Projects ranged from designing and building bat houses to install at a town park to help eliminate the number of mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus to making drawstring bags and filling them with personal hygiene items to donate to the Children of Boy’s Town. “These young
women who received this award exemplify the principles of leadership, character and public service that are inherent in scouting and life and I congratulate them, their parents and scout leaders. This is a tremendous accomplishment and I applaud each one of them,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

Eradicating Erosion students because some of their peers have dubbed it a safety hazard, and many of them spent their recess periods working on a proposal. Once finished, students presented their projects to Principal Lori Beekman, who, impressed by their passion for the issue, organized a visit from the district Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, Mr. John Lackner. On June 12, Mr. Lackner visited the classroom and thanked them for their concern for the well-being of their school, peers and environment. He then traveled to each cluster of students to hear their proposal. “So you’ve got a
problem… what’s the solution?” he asked. Each group took a different approach to the problem. Some suggested installing a drain to catch water before it could trickle down and erode the hill, others suggested that allowing for more light to reach the hill and help vegetation grow might solve the issue. Mr. Lackner was impressed by each group and said he would thoughtfully consider each one. “I feel proud that I was able to present my solution to an important person like Mr. Lackner,” said Sophie, a fourth grader in Ms. Moulton’s class. “I feel like I actually can make a EAGLE SCOUT SAMUEL AARON CONGRATULATED - Boy Scout Troop 403 change.” invited Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta to attend the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Sam Morris of Commack and to offer his congratulations. For his community service project, Sam built and installed six new cedar benches at the main entrance to Indian Hollow Primary School, his alma mater. “Having spent a life in public service, first as a member of the Suffolk County Police Department and now as a Suffolk County Legislator, I am so proud and impressed by all of your accomplishments and that you will be attending US Naval Academy. You have achieved so much as a teenager that I know you will continue to make your parents and community proud of you as you become a navy officer,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

Fourth graders from Bellerose Avenue Elementary in the NorthportEast Northport School District recently had the opportunity to propose a solution to a problem the school is facing to the district Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds on June 12. During an in-class lesson on erosion, fourth-grade teacher Sue Moulton took her students outside to show them a real example of erosion — the front of the school’s crumbling hill. Ms. Moulton encouraged students to observe the problem and come up with a solution based on different facts they had learned. This problem was especially relevant to the

Third graders from Dickinson Avenue in the Northport-East Northport School District recently became Amazon explorers and took an in-depth look at the wonders of the world’s rainforest. After learning about the unique ecosystem and how it is shrinking by the year, students were each assigned a unique species of animal to research. After sufficient research, students created a replica of their animal in its natural
habitat and presented, museum-style, to teachers, classmates, and visiting parents. Animals presented included the poison dart frog, the spectacled bear, the amazon dolphin, and many more. Additionally, various classes visited to view and listen to all of the students demonstrate a firm understanding of their animal based on facts they pulled from their research to present. Visiting students were delighted by

Rainforest Researchers the lifelike appearance of many of the projects. “Fifty percent of the world’s animals live in the rainforest, and only seven percent of the world is rainforest,” said student Katelyn Voorhees. “We may never get to see any of these animals in person, but we got to learn all about them, the importance of their role in the ecosystem, and why we should protect what’s left of the rainforest.” MATHEMATICIANS SCORE BIG - Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District brought home two trophies from the 2019 Suffolk County Mathematics Tournament at Stony Brook University on May 30. Peter Mainetti, an extremely dedicated pianist, violinist and composer, has participated in nearly all things musical that Northport High School has to offer and succeeded extraordinarily. “Peter Mainetti is singularly the finest musician I have ever had in my music classroom in my 28 years as an educator,” said music teacher Dr. Frank Doyle. Peter has been recognized at local, statewide and national levels for his
compositional work, including a recipient of the Arlene Diamond Award from the Long Island Composers’ Alliance, a NAfME All-National composer and many more. STUDENT JOINS THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER - Seven-year-old Dominick Chiuchiolo, a first grader at Tackan Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District, is taking a literal stand against childhood cancer by running his own lemonade stand. In just one week, Chiuchiolo’s lemonade stand garnered $11,390 to support childhood cancer research. The “Lemonade Days of Summer” is a seven-day challenge to help benefit Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. After finding out his mother is a childhood cancer survivor, Chiuchiolo set his initial goal to raise $8,000 in one month but far surpassed his expectations thanks to the support of his friends, family and local community. At the Northport-East Northport’s last board meeting of the 2018-19 school year, not only were two outstanding students of the month recognized, but all of the outstanding science, math and art department students who have set themselves apart this year by winning numerous awards — both county and statewide. The planning process has been underway since December 2018, led by IT department director Ken Burke with creative support from PIO Nicole Garguilo. The new website, developed by civic plus, features a mobile-friendly capability, online permits & licenses, a community help center and a new blog feature which the town plans to use to notify the public on pressing topics such as road construction and conditions, new
development and revitalization timelines. The site is a part of the administrations initiative to increase public awareness, transparency and make access to services from the touch of a screen. “This is an exciting moment for the town. The modern website makes information much easier to access and it’s visually appeasing. The work that went into updating such an important platform, took six months of planning, preparing and information gathering. I want to commend the director of IT, Ken Burke
