They “raised” Painted Lady butterflies, and, as a culminating activity, the students released the butterflies into the school’s butterfly garden. The garden had undergone an amazing transformation just the day before, thanks to Christopher Longstreet, a Sawmill dad who noticed the garden needed some loving care.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I write this column, just two days from the summer solstice, I am inspired by several seasonal thoughts… Weather. That great natural occurrence that has the ability to singlehandedly cancel any plans you may have made, no matter how far in advance, with no regard for reservations, ticket purchases, how many people you may have coordinated with… When Mother Nature is compelled to bless us with a torrential thunderstorm, blizzard, blistering heat or any other, more serious, natural disaster, you can say goodbye to your beach day. Society. We seem to enjoy our solitude, even when we are among several thousand of our closest friends in a

stadium or concert arena. As I mentioned in a previous column, I have tickets to about seven upcoming performances over the next several months. In the three shows I have attended so far, it was amazing to look around at the audience and see the great majority on their cell phones, taking “selfies” with friends, surfing Facebook, Instagram… everything but actually listening to the music. Money well spent. Traffic. Long Island is known for its congestion. While summer may bring a bit of respite in the form of school being out of session and some taking their vacation time elsewhere, this is counteracted by those who migrate en masse to the beaches and parks and pools daily, clogging up every major

artery on the Island. Going back to the summer concert scene, if you plan to attend any shows this summer, you had best be prepared to wait, especially as you attempt to exit. Just imagine about 15 lanes merging into two onto Ocean Parkway. I don’t have to – I’ve experienced it more than my fair share already. It’s not pretty. Let’s hope this summer brings its fair share of sunshine (on weekends, preferably, for those of us who work for a living during the week). And if you happen to be in attendance at a concert in the coming weeks, try putting down the phone for a few minutes, focus on the stage and enjoy the moment. Oh, and try to chill getting out of the parking lot. You’re going to be there awhile.

Thanking Soldiers For Service resident Mark Garry was inspired by the images of war to do something to be able to give back to the local servicemen and women for their service to our country. Mark teamed up with fellow SBYC members Skip Hein and Roger Smith. Skip’s military background made him a perfect liaison with the local military community and since Roger served on the board at the SBYC, that solidified the relationship between the event and the location. It was then decided that a fishing tournament would be more entertaining and relaxing than just a big party. “I decided on a fishing tournament because it was always a stress reliever for me,” said Garry. “When work was busy, and it always was, I went out fishing with my

boys every chance I could. This tournament is our way of saying thank you for the sacrifices US military members make.” Soldiers on the Sound began with breakfast and boat assignments. For some it was an introduction, for others, a reunion. Two lucky groups of soldiers were assisted by the pros. A professional team of fishermen, Team Old School captained by Mike Smedley and Tommy Adamski,

towed their 22 ft. SeaPro from Youngsville, NC to take out a team of soldiers and share their fishing secrets. Team Old School’s sponsors donated three of the day’s grand prizes: SIMRAD donated a GO7 Chartplotter/Fishfinder and transducer, CE Smith donated a center console hard top and Accurate donated a TwinSpin SR6 spinning reel. A second lucky team fished with professional fisherman, outdoorsman, consultant and author Angelo Peluso who schooled them on the how-to’s of LI Sound fluke fishing. Soldiers, captains and first mates returned from fishing to an incredible display of the American Flag provided by the Smithtown and St. James Fire Departments. Once on shore, everyone feasted on an incredible array of food including a ‘low country boil’ and a smorgasbord of catered dishes provided by Ruland Road Deli (Melville). Every participant was eligible to win some incredible prizes donated by local merchants and national corporations. Additional grand prizes include a 3 day/2 night stay at Hawks Cay Florida Keys Resort, smart TV’s and kayaks. Other prizes included 60 fishing poles and reels, baseball tickets to the Yankees, Mets and Ducks games, K2 coolers, Weber grills, just to name a few. There were over 125 prizes raffled off thanks to generous donors. This unique event is free for all participants - all captains, first mates and “pink ladies” (dedicated group of helpers) are volunteers. The entire event runs on the generous donations of the sponsors. This tournament is open to active serviceman and prior registration is required. Servicemen and women from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard joined together for the 7th Annual Soldiers on the Sound Ltd. Fishing Tournament on Saturday, June 13th, at the Smithtown Bay Yacht Club (SBYC) in Nissequogue. This year, 135 active members of the military powered out of the Smithtown Marina on 60 boats for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie. The winning fish weighed in at 6.1 3/8 lbs. and was caught by 16 yearold Jake DeLeo, first mate for captain and Smithtown Bay Yacht Club member Tony Voelker. They were accompanied on the boat by Staff Sgt. Chris Arrigo from the 106th Rescue Wing Air National Guard. Jake’s name will be added to the coveted winner’s plaque, recently re-named the Soldiers on the Sound Ed Jakubowski Award in honor of his recent passing as he was such a great patron of Soldiers on the Sound, which is proudly displayed in the SBYC lobby. Jake was personally selected by Tony to be his mate because of his experience as a first mate on a charter boat out of Pt. Jefferson. “This event is really cool, it’s great what they do for the soldiers,” said Jake’s of his first time at Soldiers on the Sound. “This is a great event to participate in,” said Tony. Though Jake caught the winning fish, Staff Sgt. Chris had the “hottest reel on the boat. He must have caught 4-5 fish himself.” Of the big catch, Tony recalled “Chris almost fell overboard trying to net the fish.” Said Chris, “The fish was big and flat so it wouldn’t go in the net. I had to turn it sideways to finally get it in. Then we saw the rigging was stretched out and we could have lost the fish! The fish was so big, they had to put it in its own cooler.” Soldiers on the Sound Fishing Tournament began seven years ago when SBYC member and Kings Park

Only projects that can be completed for $2,000 or less are undertaken.

Food To Table

Commack High School is helping to feed the hungry. Science teacher, Ryan McGrath, with the support of the entire science department, has refurbished the greenhouse in one of the school’s courtyards, and an edible garden is growing well for the second year. Mr. McGrath and Director of Science, Alison Offerman-Celentano, coauthored a grant application to Whole Kids Foundation and were awarded a $2,000 grant. The garden was started by Mr. McGrath and a few students in the spring of 2013 with one raised garden bed. The Commack Lowe’s provided a grant last year, and the garden was expanded to three raised beds.

The monies from the Whole Kids Foundation will be used to erect winterizing tunnels to extend the growing season so the garden will provide the local food pantry with more fresh, organic produce. The produce provided from the high school is donated to a local food pantry, and “leaves the pantry the day we deliver it, which indicates there is a great need for free fresh vegetables and fruits in our community,” said Mrs. Offerman-Celentano. “We will also use the funds to purchase additional tools to quantify our crop output each season so that we can plan accordingly over the winter to either sustain or increase our yield. Currently, we estimate

our production at 10-20 pounds/week which we hope to increase to better provide fresh produce for our community members. It is our hope to provide a greater service to our local community and continue to educate our children about the importance of healthy eating and the significant need for edible gardens.” Mr. McGrath and his students have worked closely with The Long Island Community Agriculture Network (LICAN) to receive assistance with the setup of the first raised bed and to provide information to be successful in the first growing season. They continue to provide support for our food-totable garden initiative.

At a recent meeting of the Smithtown Rotary Club, Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta congratulated Police Officer Dennis Hendrickson of the Fourth Police Precinct for being this year’s recipient of the Smithtown Rotary’s 46th Annual Peter J. Biegen Award. This Award was named after Officer Pete Biegen of the Fourth Police Precinct who spent his life serving others, as well as being actively involved in

his community. Officer Hendrickson joined the Suffolk County Police Department in 2006 and has been a member of the Med-Cat team since 2007. For the past four years, he has been assigned to the Community Support Unit. In addition to these responsibilities, he is a cocoordinator of the Police Explorer Program. Officer Hendrickson is also a member of the Manorville Fire Department and

previously was Chief of the Syosset Fire Department. “As a retired Suffolk County Detective, I know first-hand of the hard work and commitment that is involved in being a police officer and I commend him and all of the members of the Suffolk County Police Department for the work and time they spend protecting the residents of Suffolk County,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta.

Students in Laura McCoy and Kellylynn Santelli’s fifth-grade combined class at Accompsett Elementary School in Smithtown are being honored for spreading awareness about the importance of human rights. The New York State United Teachers and Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights recently announced the winners of the second annual Speak Truth To Power “Everyone Has Rights” Public Service Announcement contest. This year’s winners included 20 student entries from across New York State, with the AES class receiving two of the 20 awards for two PSAs they

created, “What Are Human Rights?” and “It Doesn’t Matter If...” “It caught our attention because the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is part of Smithtown’s fifth-grade ELA curriculum focusing on human rights,” said McCoy, who along with Santelli gave the students an overview of the UDHR and tied lessons into their readings of the book “Esperanza Rising” about a young Mexican girl overcoming adversities. “The contest seemed a perfect match for our class. Being so familiar with the text in the book, the conversations the students had were very natural.” As a two-teacher

garden was badly in need of “More Savings, More Doing,” so Mr. Longstreet paired up with Smithtown Home Depot Operations Manager, Miguel Pichardo, and associates, Kristine Lomardie and Gloria DeJesus, to transform the garden just in time for the third grade students to release butterflies. After ripping out all the weeds that had taken over, beautiful plants and trees that attract these flying beauties were planted, also courtesy of Home Depot. The garden will provide a wonderful place for teachers to take their students out during the warm weather to read,

write, and learn. Sawmill was so appreciative of this donation. The student council created thank you care packages for the team filled with orange drinks and orange treats with a note that read, “Orange you glad you helped us out? We are!” “Let’s do this!” was music to the ears of MandracchiaSawmill Intermediate School Student Council. The Student Council Advisors, Tara O’Grady, Kathi Woolley, and Laura Keen, would like to send a special thank you to all the students that came out to help the Home Depot team get the job done!

Paint & Sip Class The Smithtown Senior Citizen Department recently held its first Paint & Sip class for local senior citizens. Participants created their masterpieces by following the Senior Centers’ art teacher, Debbie Rosenberg, instructions on a step by step basis. The group sipped sparkling cider and enjoyed cheese

& fruit plates while they painted. Budding artists are welcome to join our regularly scheduled Art classes on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 1 to 2 p.m. A special Still Life Drawing class is also offered on select Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All classes are free

classroom, they decided to submit two entries. They recruited the help of parent Joanne Romanelli, who recorded and edited the two 90-minute PSA videos. To their surprise, both videos were featured as winners in the statewide contest. The class decided to donate a portion of their prize money to the Thirst Project for the construction of a well in Africa for family access to safe, clean drinking water. The remainder will be used toward classroom supplies and a small class party.
