Jefferson ultimately claimed victory, a result so unnerving to Adams that he left Washington, D.C. prior to Jefferson’s inauguration. The two men would ultimately reconcile, exchanging more than 150 letters before dying within hours of one another on Independence Day in 1826.

Smithtown High School East recently held its official ribbon-cutting for its new Wall of Heroes, dedicated to those who served the country. The wall honors Smithtown alumni – graduates of Smithtown High School East, Central High School and Smithtown Branch High School – who have served in any branch of the armed forces. The memorial wall honors those individuals who have defended America’s freedom. It features each individual’s name, military portrait, high school graduation year and branch of the military service. The digital display – which has seven different monitors

– currently features more than 100 graduates. “Thank you for your efforts in making this happen,” said Smithtown Central School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Secaur. “We all owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to our men and women who have served in our armed forces.” Smithtown High School East Principal Dr. Kevin Simmons welcomed guests to the ceremony, including members of the American Legion Post 833, VFW 10810, Michael and Vera Wertheim and guest of honor James Gouras, a member of the Class of 1944. Dr. Simmons thanked the Smithtown High School East

leadership students, along with teachers Morgan Tavis and Bill Coderre, who worked on the Wall of Heroes during the last several years. “Despite the obstacles and challenges we have faced over the past few years, our leadership students perserved and continued to move forward following the lead of Ms. Coderre and Ms. Tavis,” Dr. Simmons said. “Our leadership students stayed the course until this worthy and overdue mission was complete. This beautiful monument will proudly be displayed here at East for many years to come, reminding us all of the selfless acts and heroism of our alumni.”

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! If you live nearby the farm and would like to sign up for their Summer and or Fall CSA program, you can. Their crop shares are an easy way to guarantee farm fresh veggies for you and your family all season long. By joining their CSA program you will gain a connection to their farm and know exactly where your vegetables are coming from. You will receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown right in Centereach, while supporting your own neighbors. Their organically grown vegetables are harvested and packed the same day you receive them, cutting time and travel dramatically from field to fork. Members of their Summer CSA can expect to receive a wide variety of summer vegetables, including but not limited to, summer squashes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and a diverse array of greens. Members of their Fall CSA can expect to receive an assortment of winter squashes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, as well as an assortment of greens. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers

can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and ﬁll out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to ﬁnd out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. It it suggested that volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. Lastly, the farm is in need of some repairs; they need a new roof on their barn, plumbing assistance and fountain repair. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate their time and skills to assist in any of these projects, it would be such a blessing to their farm. The farm would like to give a huge shout out and thanks to Parkline Asphalt for donating their time and skills to lay out a nice smooth roadway from their parking lot to their wheelchair garden for those in wheelchairs or unsteady on their feet!

Few summertime holidays elicit as much excitement as the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day in the United States. Each year, family, friends and revelers anticipate the arrival of the holiday so they can host barbecues, enjoy the sun, listen to their favorite summertime tunes, and commemorate the freedoms afforded by the monumental events that led to the holiday’s establishment. Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1941, but July 4th has stood as the birth of American independence for much longer. July 4th marks a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. According to PBS, the colonies were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III despite having no representation in the British Parliament. “Taxation without representation” became a battle cry and was one of several grievances colonists had with Great Britain. Conflict between the colonies had been going on for at least a

year before the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in June of 1776, says Military.com. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from England. Two days later, on July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence is an historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer of the declaration writing committee charged with putting the colonies’ sentiments into words. Richard Henry Lee of Virginia was one of the first people to present a resolution for American independence, and his commentary was the impetus for the formal Declaration of Independence. A total of 86 changes were made to Jefferson’s original draft until the final version was adopted. The signing of the document helped to solidify independence, and eventually lead to the

formation of the United States of America. A total of 56 delegates signed the document. Although John Hancock’s signature is the largest, it did not hold more weight than the other signatures. Rather, rumor has it, Hancock signed it so large so that the “fat, old King could read it without his spectacles.” However, the National Archives says it was also customary that, since Hancock was the president of the Continental Congress, he be the first person to sign the document centered below the text. The Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence on July 6, 1776. The first public readings of the Declaration were held in Philadelphia’s Independence Square on July 8, 1776. We hope everyone enjoys the Fourth of July.
